Qiaolin, the legitimate daughter, had a younger sister, Xuyan, who was an unexpected addition to the family. Xuyan’s unplanned birth brought joy to Qiaolin but resulted in their father losing his job, their mother being scorned, and Xuyan herself becoming homeless and placed in foster care with their grandmother.
