Where Shall We Walk Today?: Walking The Pennine Way

Rate this book
Growing up in the 1960s in a small mining village in Derbyshire, trips to the countryside – the great outdoors – were a huge part of Dave Marriott’s life. Leaving the village was an adventure in itself but the school trip that had the biggest effect on him was the day they visited Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District. As the noisy party of schoolchildren set off walking through the village and past the Nag’s Head pub, Dave spotted a sign that read “Pennine Way”. Mesmerised by the beauty of the scenery, he vowed to return and explore this beautiful part of the country one day. And indeed he did, albeit some forty-two years later. “Where Shall We Walk Today?” is the story of how Dave’s dream came true when he and his wife Diane walked all 267 miles of The Pennine Way during three weeks one summer. Join Dave and Diane as they scramble, stumble and stroll their way from Derbyshire to Scotland. Walking boots required; blisters guaranteed!

Nice description of Britain/Scotland's Long Distance Trail

I enjoy reading hiker journals of various trails such as the Appalachian and the Camino de Santiago. Mr. Marriott did a nice job describing the terrain, the people they met on the trail and the places they stayed. It was great that they could have beer/ale/stout every night. I could have done without his childhood story but overall I enjoyed this book. Who knows, I may even hike the Pennine Way some day!

This is a great book describing one man and his wife's Pennine Way journey. Dave tells it how it is, so don't read if you are easily offended! Personally, I found the "in my day we only had a lump of coal to play with but we were happy" sentiment got in the way of the walking but it added to the character. This book is not about super fit thirty somethings marching across the moors but about ordinary people who enjoy the country. Fell runners and potholers need not apply.

This is a brilliant book, down to earth, funny and a great account of Dave and Diane's walk. As someone who is an avid walker I have always dreamed of doing a long distance footpath and reading this has inspired me even more. Some good advice about doing the walk and good tips on B & B's and pubs along the way. I really enjoyed reading this and didn't want it to end.
