Wall Street Journal bestselling author SJ Scott wanted to be Luke Skywalker when he grew up.
Unfortunately his complete lack of physical grace and introverted mannerism's kept the earth from having their own Jedi Knight to battle the Sith menace.
Steve “SJ” Scott was born and raised in New Jersey. After finishing college with a degree in psychology he knew he needed to further his education or work on his latte making skills.
During a short stint in US Air Force, Scott was able to get his Master’s in business and then moved on to conquer the business world.
Scott then spent a couple of years working for a company not unlike the company depicted in Mike Judge’s film, “Office Space”. After doing his share of “TPS” reports, Scott swore he would never work for anyone but himself.
He spent the next few years making this happen. Making a decent living online and eventually pivoting to writing books, blogging and even podcasting.
Scott has written over 30 books, most of them in the "self-improvement" genre. An area that he is personally passionate about.
His books have been published in 12 different languages. So he is well on his way to world domination. However, in his heart of hearts he knows he will soon have to venture out into the universe and defeat the Sith menace.
HIGHLIGHTS: 1. Your body functions best when you get approximately the same amount of sleep each night. While you may be able to make up about an hour of sleep debt by sleeping an extra hour, your body won’t register any hours beyond that as recovery sleep.
2. Lowering your sodium and caffeine consumption may help you sleep better.
3. Make a power smoothie that emphasizes proteins, potassium, and antioxidants. (Reason: This simple shake is another way to create energy for the rest of the day.)
4. Review quarterly goals. (Reason: Reviewing three-month goals on a daily basis helps you stay focused on the outcome.)
5. Wash face with a peppermint scrub. Mint is invigorating; so is the scrub.
6. Change into new clothing.
7. As you plan out your hour of focus, you will want to choose the ONE thing that will have the biggest impact on your life. This one activity should be tied into a major life goal OR should be the single activity that will have the biggest impact on your career.
8. You’ll need to write most days; there’s no substitute for keeping your butt in the chair and getting words on the page. Force yourself to write without pausing, if possible. Most writers tend to write in spurts, taking long thinking breaks, but you’ll find the words will come if you force yourself to press on for the entire hour.
9. Write a letter to your future self, telling yourself how much you impacted your friends and family with your spiritual growth.
10. Improving your confidence can enhance your relationships and your job performance. If you want to make a lifetime chance, you have to take baby steps, changing one small thing at a time and solidifying that change into an established habit before you take on another challenge.
Basically, this attention deficit disorder driven drivel says: "If you want to develop good habits, do them daily until they become habits." Wow, profound. Also included is how to train for a marathon, get out of debt, eat right, start your own business, get a promotion, grow spiritually (WAY too much of the spiritual crap)... It jumps all over, and loses itself.
I read a lot of materials about personal development and habit forming, and sometimes the tone is "you can change your life by doing all these things," which can be overwhelming. I appreciate that this book was focused specifically on developing a morning routine. It's much easier to focus on making changes when I am looking at 30-60 minute chunks of my day, rather than thinking about my whole life at once! Some of this material was familiar to me but again, the hyper focus on a short part of my day was great. I found it useful to re-evaluate my morning routine and realize I'm not exactly focusing my energy where I want to. This is a super short easy read in simple language that will help a lot of readers!
S.J. Scott is the author of over 30 books, most of which are in 'Self Improvement' genre. 'Wake Up Successful' is another addition in the same genre. In this book, he focuses on how people have trouble achieving their goals, and how it can be changed for the better. According to him the reason why many successful people accomplish their tasks and goals is because they have a set routine, specifically morning routine. The book further spots light on how a routine can be set which maximizes the output, improves energy levels, and get things done. Scott has also listed a few resources which can prove to be helpful. Being an early riser myself, this book made a lot of sense to me.
3.5 🌟 Very informative and to the point self help book. There were lots of tips and tricks. I am going to follow some of the tips that she provided. I want to be more productive during the morning, and I am a sucker for books such this. I will literally read a book “How to brush your teeth”. If I can learn ONE thing and implement it in my life and be a little more productive, I’m all in! Will definitely follow her advice about changing one habit at a time, because I am very ambitious and want to do everything at once... that’s my toxic trait.
Chunks of advice on developing routines in common areas of focus. I like the insight on staying on track with your morning routines and some of the things to avoid when trying to develop. I will go back to the conclusion and the 4 rules as a reference develop my morning routine.
I’ve been doing well on my morning routine. ( I can’t leave my bedroom in the morning until I make the bed) this book has given me many tips and motivation to make my morning ritual even stronger.
Thought is was a little long but author went through many different types of goals and mentioned examples of how having a morning routine would help. Full of actionable steps and immediately applicable
The books explains many strategies and activities that you can get a hint from it on what to do for yourself. It is short, and full of ideas. I will start soon on applying what is in the book.
I think this is a good book for people who haven’t already done a little research and are brand new to the morning routine journey. It did feel a bit like a blog post rather than a book. Not overly detailed and a short read.
I was a morning person once! That was in a world pre-kids and before I started a career!
I had all but surrendered my mornings to the mundane and the 'here we go again approach. I surrendered intention.
I was delighted to discover Scott's helpful work. There is little new information in this work BUT he presents the material in a way that makes it seem dumb to NOT have successful mornings.
Filled with suggestions and practical examples this book is a no-brainer for anyone with a desire to start each day with intention and success!
While I think having a consistent morning routine to accomplish your goals is very helpful, the way he outlined it to set aside an hour and a half is unrealistic. What if you have kids? He has one sentence for that: "Have your partner take the kids in the morning". Not realistic when my husband leaves for work before 6 (which is about the time they get up). I did appreciate all the suggestions made for goals though, and the author wasn't afraid to include spirituality. It did give me things to think about and make goals for what I can improve in my life, so worth the hour read.
Anyone with a web browser could've "researched" and written this in an hour. It's neither original nor helpful. If that wasn't enough, It's written like a really bad BuzzFeed-article, with more BuzzFeed-articles as a part of the complete article. I got a copy for free, but it costs $7 on Amazon. That's one dollar per 10 pages of useless content.
Instead of buying this book, get a good book on building habits, and do some Google-searches on how to get to sleep easily, and how to get up in the morning.
There are some good tips here to get your day started with an accomplishment under your belt. It's a lot harder than it looks and progress has been very slow. I'm a night owl and so is my girlfriend, which makes implementing this significantly more difficult.
The book seems prepared for these type of gripes. Constantly mentioning that this will take time. No promise of successful mornings within 7 days.
Good ideas, but felt more like scrolling through a blog than reading a book. Just lists and lists and lists of things to try. Some of them aren't practical or helpful in the least bit. Honestly, it went downhill very fast for me after his suggestion that if you wake up from anxiety dreams at night, to process your stress during the day. Yeah...if I could properly process my stress and anxiety during the day, I wouldn't be regularly paying a therapist, two doctors, and a copay for my meds.
Sure, S.J. Scott has some good ideas, but he throws a lot at the wall, tries to boil the ocean in creating a morning routine, but it just was too much for me, and I was especially put off by a schedule that seemed to leave no flexibility in life, or time to really devote to personal relationships.
"Hey honey, you get 15 minutes of sex in my evening routine, and we're already five minutes behind, so let's go."
I have a big problem with sleep. narcolepsy ,but with medication and Dr. s assist plan to use this method to be able to accomplish more and plan to esp. take it slow and easy as I too tend to take on way to much ,then give it up. not this time, thanks , can do it with your helpful book.
I have read just about every one of S.J. Scott's books and would have to say, that this is one of his best in terms of actionable items that can be implemented on a daily basis. I wrote a lot of notes to help me structure a perfect morning schedule that is well-rounded based on Scott's advice. Thanks Scotti mate!!!
like to talking to an enthusiastic and inspired friend. (who's not a psychiatrist or scientist) The advice isn't earth shattering, but I wasn't doing most of the given suggestions so it's still good advice. There are some nice pointers in here and a friendly reminder to do better tomorrow morning.
Good, solid tips. Nothing really ground-breaking, but a great primer or prompt for thinking through your daily habits and tweaking them for self-improvement of any kind.
I'm going to keep it around to re-read every few months to keep refining my routine.
Easy to read, full of good advice, practical, enjoyable, gives what you need to get started right. I was very impressed and pleased with the content of this book. highly recommended.
Quick read with useful information. The ideas are simple and seem easy to incorporate in your life. The idea of picking something small and doing that for 30 days before you start soothing new will help you ale large changes. Borrowed this using my kindle unlimited subscription...well worth it.
Decent read. Not his best work but there were definitely some good tips in it to grant it 3 stars. Nothing game-changing and I found his rules a bit too structured for my liking, but its a quick read (albeit a little vague at points).
Listening to this book on audio has motivated me to exchange lazy time for productive time. Scott gives countless suggestions for projects which can be realized by spending an hour every morning, and he also gives specific guidelines on how to arrange your day to enable this uninterrupted time.
