"...a compelling exploration of an under-appreciated pocket of history...a potent, thrilling, and human reflection on the oft-forgotten casualties of ideological warfare." —IndieReader

In the tumultuous world of 1950s rural Slovenia, Anja is young, brilliant, talented—and caught in the oppressive grip of a corrupt government. As she navigates a landscape of betrayal and hardship, Anja’s determination to save her family’s farm from ruin propels her into a dangerous game of survival. With her father imprisoned for resistance and the threat of nationalization looming over their heads, her courage and resourcefulness are put to the ultimate test.

From the shadows of a totalitarian regime to the treacherous halls of a government-owned factory, Anja’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Will she triumph against all odds, or will the forces aligned against her prove too powerful? In a world where survival means daring to defy the impossible, Anja, Against the Odds is a riveting tale of resilience, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bond of family.

This is a historical fiction that takes us to through 1950's Slovenia with Anja. Anja is our FMC who is involved with a horrible government who eventually takes her father and puts him into prison. Anja wants to save her farm that her family owns to make sure their livelihood doesn't disappear and they can survive.

I liked the story and Anja's character in this story. Anja is trying to do what she needs to do in this book for herself and her family. That is a good message of the fact we all as people can overcome a lot, almost anything. So if you really like historical fiction with political governmental involvement you will want to read the story of Anja and find out what happens to her and her family!

This uses the historical setting of World War 2 perfectly and had that element that I was hoping for from the genre and description. The characters felt like real people and I thought it was a realistic journey. I thought Daniel Jakacic wrote this well and can’t wait for more.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Tooooooo political for me. I. The early portion of the book the listed a picnic of food, it felt like they were just listing logic foods one after another. Sime was past tense and more memories. Not for me. Couldn’t keep my interest from page to page.
