Scott Welle is a motivational speaker, personal trainer, and a life coach. I am pretty sure I have seen him speak before and at a recent event for work I saw him speak …for the first time or again. It’s not that he wouldn’t have been memorable but more that it feels like it would have been 4 or more years ago, and I stink at names. ANYWAY…..

Scott handed my co-worker a copy of his latest book when he participated in his talk and I asked to read it. What I think I liked best about the book is his writing style. I can hear him as I read the words. It’s like having your own personal coach in a book.

Scott breaks down the book by focusing on three areas: Health, High Performance and Happiness. I’ll skip Health since it includes a lot of what most of us know but might not actually do. I agree with it all and am inspired to do just a little bit better today.

High Performance:
It requires commitment. Desire fluctuates from time to time, but commitment is about your making a promise (even if only to yourself) and honoring the promise even if it is hard and you are unmotivated.

Sometimes people have fear and say “what if I can’t do it” and to that we should say “what if I can?” and let’s make up a statistic that 90% of the time the negative outcome doesn’t happen so why focus on that?

Mastery of fundamentals builds a strong foundation for growth and success. Seek mastery in all the fundamentals so there is no weakness. Example: Health fundamentals are nutrition, hydration, sleep, stress management and exercise. You need them all to have Health mastery.

Here is a Scott provides for focused productivity:
1. Be grateful.
2. Meditate and get focused in the morning,
3. Make a to-do list and accept not doing all of it.
4. Tackle the most challenging tasks before lunch (I say eat that frog and do it even sooner!)
5. Take more breaks. YAAAAAAS
6. Minimize distractions.
7. Use technology with intent and STOP multitasking.
8. Practice deep breathing.
9. Improve email and social media systems. *
10. Stay inspired. Yep – it is why I read these types of books!
11. Learn how to say no.
12. Set Timelines.

*Brendon Burchard calls email “a convenient organizing system for other people’s agendas”. I feel like I have heard this several times before – such as in the book At Your Best by Carey Nieuwhof.

Then still under High Performance there was a section about durability / resilience which is something we talk about a lot at work. Bounce back quickly.

Now on to Happiness. I am not sure what it means to outperform happiness. Yet here are the components Scott sets out: 1) Level of Contribution – give your gifts because others need you – do it for the “we” and not for me; 2) Desire for pr9ogress and growth; and 3) Willingness to take risks. This section had a variety pack of Scott’s philosophies.
