Bear and Girl is a gentle, grown-up story about friendship, refuge, and beginning again.
Set in a quiet cabin in the Canadian Rockies, it follows a mature woman who has fled a life she can no longer endure. Exhausted and afraid, she is looking for a place where she can finally rest and take stock of herself.
Instead, she finds Bear.
Bear is a steady, thoughtful presence who lives alone in the mountains. He listens more than he speaks. He offers warmth, steadiness, and the relief of being seen without being judged. What grows between them is not adventure or drama, but something quieter and more trust and care.
Many readers describe Bear and Girl as a book they return to — a chapter at night, a few pages at a time. It is meant to be lived with, not rushed. The story unfolds slowly and with intention, focusing on how two friends help one another without trying to fix each other.
The story moves simply, allowing room for silence as well as meaning. Along the way, it touches lightly on love, loss, belief, and what it means to live — never insisting, never instructing, always leaving space for the reader’s own path.
Bear and Girl is for readers drawn to kindness that isn’t soppy, to meaning that invites rather than instructs, and to stories that respect the reader’s intelligence while offering calm and care. It is especially cherished by those who have weathered storms, grown tired of noise, and found comfort in quiet companionship.
Step inside Bear’s cabin and see whether it feels like a place you might want to stay.
I didn't want this book to end. Bear was a special being. He helped Girl to recover from being abused. Anything else would give away the book. I heartily encourage everybody to read it!! I laughed, I cried, I rejoiced!
This book was way more than I expected. It's for everyone, not just victims of domestic abuse. It's a wonderful and uplifting story. I highly recommend it.
An interesting theme of the book is healing from domestic abuse and learning to love herself again.
A talking polar bear with a host of friendly animal friends help this "girl" (63 yrs old) heal from the domestic abuse she has endured her whole life. She was able to escape her husband before he actually killed her.
The writing was childish - I just felt it was so simplistic and strange for adults - even though the theme is very adult - the writing just was strange for me to enjoy.
It breaks my heart that humans are so destructive and abusive to each other, and then are so broken to break free from the abuse - physical and mental. My wish is that we are better to each other, build one another up and that those who are in this situation are brave enough to escape. It is a hard topic for me to enjoy spending time to read.
After a life of abuse and despair, a woman leaps from her husband's truck to escape. Injured and unconscious, she is rescued by a polar bear...who talks. This delightful tale tells us of the remaking of 2 lives, love found, and a way to move forward.
I loved the book. I gave it 5 stars because it was lovely and innocent and magical! They helped each other in ways that neither of them could have known possible. One day he was saving her life and the next, she saved his right back. I couldn't put it down!
