Rate this book
Who is that man, covered in shadows, in the corner of my ironed cell?

My captor, the blood flame king, has locked me up in a stone castle for my entire life.
Sworn to a life of loneliness and misery. Ever such the calculating man.
Things are not how they seem in the realm of Aurial. There are many mysteries to unlock and discover.
Starting with the letter that appeared in my rooms on the night of my twenty-first name day. Locking in my fate and sealing it without a key.
All I have ever known was stone and steel, never feeling the kiss of the sea breeze. But all of that is about to change when the man locked in my ironed cell speaks to me.
Will he save me?
Or will he damn us both?

This is a fast-paced fantasy romance. With talking mythical creatures, enemies to lovers, found family, mystery and spice. This book is extremely emotional and we find ourselves locked in the female main character’s mind, facing the turmoils of her life.
This book is not suitable for people under the age of 18 or readers who are sensitive to sexual content, explicit language, mentions of blood and death.

If you’re looking for a book that you absolutely cannot put down, look no further!!

I was hooked from the first chapter! This book has such a unique magic system, with powerful guardians that can grant their powers to the heirs of the 3 kingdoms. There are pirates, a morally grey love interest, shifters and a strong smart mouthed FMC. This is high tension, found family, mild spice and tons of action.

When war broke out after a goddess betrayed them all and tried wipe out elven and human kind, the guardians were made to see peace in the realm. They made the 3 kingdoms Dragon, Serpent and Phoenix. When our FMC Aurelia’s mother disappears the king of the Phoenix court demands justice in an attempt to find her. With the help of the Serpent king they attack the Dragon court where they believe she’s been captured, wiping out the kingdom completely and ending the royal line…or so they think.

We meet our morally grey rebel MMC Sylas after Aurelia’s castle was overrun by rebels and she escaped only to be captured by brutal pirates. Sylas helps her escape one captor only to be put into the arms of another. Secrets are revealed and sides must be taken in order to find the missing guardian of the dragon kingdom, and seek revenge on the tyrannical kings.

The secrets, mystery and the brutal battles kept me engaged the entire time. I saw the plot twist coming or so I thought until the author had me second guessing myself. This is not a hea and ends on a massive cliffhanger, and then an epilogue that also ends on another massive cliffhanger.

Thank you so much to Shae Leigh for allowing me to read this pre-release in exchange for my honest review, and I need book 2 immediately please!

dnf at 20%. i snagged a copy of this for free last night after the author reached out on booktok to promote their novel in pursuit of reviews and traction. i was super excited for the plot and concept, but was disappointed with the hurdles between me and getting to the plot.

the book is in pretty big need of an editor. there's sections where words are misused; homophones like reeked (stank) and wreaked (wrought). there's also a reoccurring issue where lines are redundant or repetitive—ie: "Fresh air like I had never experienced before flew through the strands of my tangled hair. The hair became knotted and I tied it up into a bun with a piece of rope." with a little fine tuning, much of this could be fixed for a more seamless reading experience.

the first 5 chapters, introduction, and prologue are balanced between a sluggish pace and the quick introduction of a wide cast of characters. while some characters were unique and intriguing, they reasonably lacked depth this early on. but less acceptable was that other main characters fell particularly flat. by chapter 6, we pick up pace with the plot and the story hit some notes that really sold me on what i was reading. but that too was stunted by the recurring editing issues i had with the previous section.

i'd happily give this a 2nd try after some editing or a revised edition comes out.

Shea Leigh's first book about a sheltered princess who yearns for adventure and a life outside the walls of the Phoenix castle has the hallmarks of a lovely romantasy series. Princess Amelia wants to travel the seas? Oh, she definitely gets what she wants after her 21st birthday celebration--and then some. And, oh gosh, that sandalwood scent... bwahahaha

This book is a good read for those getting into the romantasy genre. There is enough intrigue to keep me engaged in the story without feeling bogged down in exposition. There is enough depth in the characters to foreshadow continued development throughout the series. I'll be keeping an eye out on the second book to see what happens next.

The biggest drawback for me is the plethora of spelling and grammatical errors, especially towards the end of the book. It was so frequent that I took away a tenth of a point from my rating.

OMG!!! I absolutely could not put this book down! If you are looking for a badass FMC PLEASE LOOK NO FURTHER! Amelia “can’t catch a break” Emberson, Heir of the Phoenix, is the FMC for you!

I have read countless fantasy books where the FMC is labeled as fragile, small and weak. Amelia will be no such thing. The determination of this woman can’t be felt through the pages. She will stand for what is right and reading her character development definitely rivals a SJM book!

Now let’s take a minute to talk about our main MMC, Sylas! The moment he was introduced I knew he would make my list of book boyfriends. All feminism left my brain IMMEDIATELY. Dark blue hair and storm grey eyes?? YES PLEASE.

Shea is an amazing author and I will be waiting rather impatiently for book two! I cannot wait to see what else she publishes. Support Indie Authors🩷

decent storyline, no editing?

The story was good, your typical fantasy romance. Interesting ideas that were the only reason i pushed through and finished it. Every single page had at least one spelling error, grammatical error, or misused word.
