“You can’t achieve in faith”—someone who had no idea how much that statement would shake me.
My entire life, I’ve craved this need to “matter,” and believed I had to accomplish my way there. This led to years of striving in sports, relationships, body image, money, people pleasing, and career obsession, all with the intent of “earning my way to mattering.”
A few months ago, everything I used as a means to validate my existence was stripped of me—layoffs at my corporate company, a ringless finger as I watched all my friends get engaged, a business scam that left me a couple of thousand dollars out of pocket—and I came face to face with an eerily raw version of myself. I sat there thinking, “So this is what it’s like not to matter.” In that moment, God peeled back all the decorations I thought made up my “mattering,” and taught me I still mattered.
Maybe my worth was never to be found outside of me. Maybe because Jeremiah 1:5 tells me that God gave me my worth, that means “valuable” was a title I was given, not a badge I earned. Maybe real faith isn’t so much about what I’m doing “for” God but how I am walking with Him. Maybe the question isn’t if I matter, but will I trust God when He says I always have?
