What reviewers are saying about the BLOOD MAGIC
★★★★★ “This is a sizzling hot book. The characters are great, the plot races and the writing is great. Humour, magic, crossbows, ferrets, mysterious men – this book has it all. I can’t wait for the rest of the books in this series.” - Amazon reviewer
★★★★★ “The main character, Jax, is like if Gin Blanco (of Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassins series) and Harry Dresden (of Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files series) had a baby. That is high praise cuz I love Gin and Harry dearly. The HighFire Crown built a world of magic, mythology and mayhem. I am super excited for the next books in the series!” - Jenny B.
★★★★★ “Witty, gripping, and leaves you wanting the next book. I found myself laughing often and unable to put it down for long.” - Amazon reviewer

This series is an intricately plotted, hare-brained race through a Jo'Berg packed with paranormal misfits and plenty of action. I wish I could have liked it more, and while it's not a bad series as such, it has that written for TV shallowness to it that meant I never quite found it satisfying.
In Blood Magic, we follow the adventures of Jax, a wizarding PI with an allergy to life-admin. She's the best in town... Or so they say (though even she thinks she's TSTL). What starts out with a job hunting down a serial killer ends up taking her down a deep and dark personal journey as the magical Realm hidden in plain sight starts to come apart at the seams. Elves, goblins, dwarves, djinn, ghosties, witches, shifters, orcs; no one is safe when chaos threatens to destroy everything. So along with her human cop BFF Morgan, her adoptive dwarf momma/personal Q, an enigmatic stalker or two, and a magical albino ferret, Jax has her work cut out for her if the world isn't going to end in fire and blood.
The plot-lines are actually quite cleverly intertwined. I enjoyed it more later on, when we'd been given some detail to go on and could put two-and-two together as the action was happening.
But it's all kept so shallow. World building is done on the fly, emotional relationships between characters are bloodless in a tell-rather-than-show way, and physical descriptions very rarely given. I think there's a romance, but it's one of those insta-soulmate ones rather than one getting any airtime. The plot can feel a bit convoluted at time as so many strands fight for attention, and the hurry to wrap them up (or failure to do so) can be a bit of a let down. It takes a very long time to get anywhere with the main arc. It does resolve most things in the end, but the tendency towards a HEA made some of it seem too convenient.
Jax's journey also didn't give her much character development, although she did have some odd flip-flop moments where she seemed oddly over-emoting compared to the rest of the time. Her inner monologue for some reason struck me as not being obviously female - often she seems more like a male author trying to logic out what a female butt-kicker would be thinking and adding in a sarcastic joke.
Little things like odd stylistic changes in the writing and changing tenses was also a bother while reading, but I guess that's a minor editorial nit-pick.
It's all so very standard Urban Fantasy stuff. If you're a fan of the genre, looking for something paranormal, light and reasonably complex with a break-neck pace, you'll probably like this one more than I did. I'd say a 2.5 stars.
This is the first series of stories I have read where you can tell the author wrote a serious magic story with a tongue in cheek twist. From names of wizards and vampires to a Ogre named Sugar, there is a touch of humor on every page. You won't be sorry to read this book.
One of the best set of books I have read twists and turns and a story to follow from the first book to the to the last .If you enjoy Lord of the rings full of ugly Orcs goblins vampires dwarves all sorts of magical beings.
Love these box sets.. Gives you the opportunity to plough straight on into the next book in the series, without waiting for these talented authors, to finish writing the next book in the series. The main characters develop too.. With no gap in the stories to really get to grips with each new twist in the tale.. No spoilers here.. Just a recommendation to read & enjoy.
Amazingly wrote, a fantastic set box. What a month in jaxs life. So many moments of hurt and sadness. But definitely worth the read and the messy house as I was so obsorbed in them 😂
I absolutely loved this series, I was sucked in from the first page and every emotion Jax felt, I also felt, as the author expertly crafted the story. It is a wild ride over the series, and I highly recommend setting aside some time to read this in one go (allowing of course for sleeping and other necessities.), because you won’t want to put it down.
What a read! Fantasy, wizards, witches, orcs, vampires and so much more! Kept me wondering what was going to happen page after page, chapter after chapter, book after book! Definitely going to be fallowing!!!
I so enjoyed this series, it always held my interest and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next! I hate that it had to end! 😀 Looking forward to more, hopefully!
I have this author and book set 5 stars because it's a book that keeps you captive! I couldn't wait to find out what happens next. If you enjoy paranormal reading this book is an excellent choice. I truly enjoyed each book of the set. It took me 2 days to finish and was worth it!!! I recommend this book to all my fellow paranormal readers
I cannot express how much I absolutely loved this series. Jax has everything going against so many times, few people supporting her, and she's extremely destitute. She had a major childhood trauma and even with that she's honest, caring, and bends over backwards to help her clients. What's an overwhelmed wizard supposed to do when the world is ending before her eyes? Fight to save it of course. This series also has hilarious cussing in Latin, which I did verify with an online search and plan to use myself!
Humor, action, mystery, and twists and turns that make things super unpredictable at times. Characters you love to love and love to hate will keep you up reading way past your bedtime. It's nice that all these books are together in one place, which leaves you completely satisfied when you finish one the next one is right there ready to start., Hard to put down, easy to love, an unbeatable price, absolutely satisfying!
Wow, lots of action all the way through these books. Plenty of supernatural creatures too. There's a war brewing and it's up to Jinx and friends to stop it. There are a few twists and turns and once you start reading believe me you won't want to stop until you've finished reading them all.
What a read ! What a ride ! Absolutely superb, haven't read anything this good in a long time. Great characters that you genuinely invest in and a magical ferret. Highly recommended
A new take on wizardry and wands for hire. Orphaned and on her own at a young age, Jax works hard for every little thing she has. Her friends love her but will it be enough
This was one really wild ride!! I was frustrated, upset, and riveted all the way through this collection. The characters were so well written, that I would have to take a break, and then go right back. The ending was so superb! I am now a real fan!!
I absolutely loved this series, although fantasy is not always one of my favourite genres to read, it really helped that it is all set in Johannesburg, so I guess Urban fantasy is one of the genres I can add to my favourite list. The characters in this series crept into my heart and will definitely be revisited in the future. I also enjoyed how all the threads from the beginning is pulled through to the end, and that each book had it's own plot as well. Really well written, and the fact that the same narrator was used for all the books really worked for me.
Jax is a thoroughly likable MC. She's brash and reckless; rushing into danger every time she turns around. Each book ended in a cliffhanger which is pet peeve of mine. However, since it's a box set it was of little consequence. That last book was frustrating, but it paid off with a slam bang final battle. All in all, a fabulous read.
I thoroughly enjoyed these books. If you like magic and magical beings fighting bad guys to save the modern world you'll love them. There were so many things happening it was unreal. Definitely some killer twists at the end
Delightfully written, this book keeps you on your toes from chapter one. Jax, an orphan who grew up to be a wizard private detective, has a case to solve but everything goes sideways and that's just day one.
So-so. Too many problems to try anything else by the author.
1. Supposedly strong female wizard who is constantly being saved my a male character. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a strong female protagonist. 2. Her best friend, a female police captain, also comes across as helpless and inept. 3. The wizard doesn’t learn from her mistakes. Same mistakes, over and over; i.e. no character development. 4. Killing off a character as an easy way to wrap up a tortured plot line. 5. Multiple characters constantly telling her they “know” something about her or about a situation, but can’t tell her; or that they will tell her later; or they start to tell her and then stop. All - through - the - books; over and over, and over. Then, it all comes out in a hurried ending. 6. Characters disappearing and then randomly appearing.
What it comes down to is that if you want a strong female protagonist, this isn’t it. If you want a plot that makes sense, this isn’t it. If you want characters to act in a way that is consistent and sensible for that character’s role and development, this isn’t it.
