Soldier who followed orders wants to set things right - 4 stars
"Raw Deal" is an imaginative story in which you are expected to accept many unusual conditions including a rogue defense contractor, a false marriage, considerable surveillance, and long held grudges. The easiest thing to give credibility might just be an illegal martial arts competition. This violent story moves quickly and includes concerns about society's values.
Ty Draker mustered out of the Army 15 years ago. Ty has feelings of guilt after murdering a man during his tour of service. He completed college, got a job as a policeman, and tried to forget his final military mission. His last orders in Afghanistan were issued by a corrupt contractor. That contractor has been actively keeping Ty under surveillance. Ty thought that he was married but his wife was only following orders from the contractor. It was a wholly artificial marriage.
After realizing that he had been duped into marriage, Ty escaped and accepted assignments from a trusted person he never met face to face. Ty started accepting assignments to rid the world of bad people with extreme prejudice. We meet Ty as he is assigned to work with a female FBI agent who believes that a psychopath is about to commit a mass murder.
Ty was asked to participate in an mixed martial arts event. No weapons are allowed, just physical brutality and luck. The participants were trying to win a modest monetary prize as the outcome of one-on-one battles determined the top three fighters.
Ty is given a little training for fighting and tries to figure out who is trying to complete a mass killing. The psychopathic person who is planning an explosion believes that people are following false and trivial goals. The backstory includes FBI agency infighting, a corporation trying to cover up its past, and a psychopath. Information is given sparingly. When the fight tournament is about to finish, more information adds to the complexity.
The potential number of victims is much higher than originally expected. Ty and his FBI partner have to do whatever it takes to stop a madman from exploding things and people. Ty's good nature and athleticism are put to extreme limits as the countdown proceeds. The fight scenes are not for anyone with a squeamish stomach. I give high credits for excitement which keeps an incredible story alive.
