Longing for male companionship, wealthy heiress Eugennia Welch is shocked when Kevin Whattling invades her home with every intention of marrying her to save himself from debtor's prison, but the tables turn on Kevin when he falls in love with the enchanting miss. Original.
Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing. Since her first Regency romance was published in 1998, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese. She is now the author of more than 50 works of warm, witty historical romance.
She and her husband of 30 years reside in Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. Regina Scott has driven four in hand, learned to fence, sailed on a tall ship, and dressed as a Regency dandy, all in the name of research, of course. It was better written than all I have read by Regina Scott so far. I felt that it was thought through, with care for period accuracy. Kevin and Jenny were one of the best pairs of romance, at least as a conception. Their love story (and insecurities) was charmingly told. And yet, it lacked something, perhaps a bit more of spark or wit.
The sunshine of the novel was Nigel and Giles, the kind of friends that really want to help you, and although they do help, somehow it is in a different way they plan (in other words, they do "a mess before a success").
Cute, entertaining read. Did have a bit too much head-hopping, but it was a fun story and likable characters. Jenny was a fun character, a wealthy bluestocking who loves learning new things, but has gotten a bit bored with life. Kevin is a charming Corinthian and penniless and is looking for a wealthy wife. I liked that he was always upfront and honest with her. They had a fun relationship. Overall, it was pretty lighthearted and a fun read for a summer afternoon. I liked it.
Content: Romance: Clean, very mild innuendo. Language: None-mild, can't remember any Violence: Mild, boxing match Religious: None
Kevin Whatling has come to a sober conclusion: he must marry an heiress or resign himself to Debtor's Prison. Fortunately, he's already met the lady he finds amiable enough to pursue. Eugennia Welch is a wealthy bluestocking who has dreamed of romance. The charming but honest Corinthian surprises her. Will attraction win or will Kevin's enemies destroy a good thing?
This was a fun and engaging read! Kevin, our hero for this tale, is a kind and interesting man. He is recently retired from spy-work, is grieving the death of his brother, and just wants to marry a lady he can admire and who can save him from the debts that have piled up. His situation si understandable, and I loved how loyal his friends were. Their interactions were some of my favorite scenes.
Eugennia, Jenny, made a perfect compliment for Kevin. She took advantage of her position to study anything that caught her interest. She longs for a handsome prince to sweep her off her feet, and Kevin does just that. She has doubts, and her reaction to things was relatable.
The plot was fast moving and kept me interested from start to finish. The side characters made each scene a delight. The only thing keeping me from a full five stars was just how fast Kevin and jenny fell in love. The attraction was obvious, but love? I think they needed a little more time for that.
Overall, this was a fantastic weekend read. I would recommend this to readers looking for a sweet Regency romance with a hint of adventure.
Sweet, light read. The hero is quite likable, although he is, what we might call today, a gold digger. I thought it quite amusing that he tells he loves her for the first time in anger, and when she questions his love, he tells her that he made up his mind to love her, so that was that. This is a clean romance.
Region's stories are so very intriguing that I can't begin one of her books without devouring it to the finish. Surely this book should be made into Jane Austenesque movie. Her characters are so developed you would think they live right next door. Love how characters from other series reappear. Bravo Mrs. Scott, bravo!
This is one of my favorites by her! I love the plot and I love that the MMC is open from the start. I love that the FMC doesn't jump on the chance to marry nor does she immediately turn him down. I love that she makes an informed decision. It was great!
Kevin Whattling is close to being thrown in the poor house. The once wealthy handsome Corinthian has paid most of his late younger brother's debts but the bills keep coming. He has only one way to stay out of debtor's prison - marry an heiress. He decides on Miss Eugennia Welch, a wealthy bluestocking. Eugennia likes nothing better than to be studying something but she can't help wishing for a handsome prince to come and marry her. When Kevin announces his intentions, Eugennia is surprised but interested. She agrees to begin a friendship to see whether they would suit and discovers that her heart is telling her something different from her head. Kevin's enemy tries to come between them and it's up to Eugennia to figure out how to stop the villain. She also must decide whether she wants to follow her head or her heart while Kevin hopes desperately that the woman he has come to love will be the bluestocking on his knee.
This novel is one of Regina Scott's best. I really liked and identified with Eugennia. Kevin is a little two-dimensional and a bit unlikable for his mercenary ways but as the story progresses, I came to like him better. There is great chemistry between Kevin and Eugennia without their feelings overpowering the story. (There's nothing more than kisses). The plot progresses quickly but is not rushed. My only quibble is that I wish Kevin had talked to Eugennia about Robbie but other than that, I really enjoyed the story.
The central romance is kisses only but there is a villain with nasty thoughts and somewhat nasty actions.
I always like female heroines who are bluestockings, because they are pretty admirable and I know I would have been one myself. That being said, I can't say I just loved this book. For some reason this book lacked some character depth, and as much as I liked Jenny I found it hard to figure out why so dashing a Corinthian would have fallen for her so quickly. I would have liked to have seen more character interaction so it would be a little more believable. This seems to happen often in this author's works, but they're still enjoyable. I'm not sure I'll read this one again, however. Three stars for a decent read.
More event driven than character driven. Not much romantic scenes so some might not like it. The characters are awesome though though not much character development (at least it was told not shown. Not really). It was fun though and that leveler at the end was precious.
The Heiress Objective by Regina Scott Spy Matchmaker Series Book Three Kevin Whattling is broke. Really broke. But he has a plan. He's going to marry an heiress and he's already chosen one. He just has to be his handsome, charming self and she'll be sure to agree.
Eugennia “Jenny” Welch is a bluestocking. And a spinster. Men don't choose women to marry who like to think. Who are intelligent. So why has her prince charming suddenly come to sweep her away?
No perfect plan gets by without a few wrenches thrown in. Even with the help of Kevin's friends: Giles and Nigel, the wrench has been thrown and he has to work hard at getting Eugennia to agree to marriage. http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
