Aristide, the “Blood-Mad Duke,” is injured after defending the castle from the angry mother Sirius and the rampaging Berguignon swarm. While the Duke is sent to bed to rest and heal, his fiancée Princess Melphiera tackles an entirely different challenge…what to do with all the Berguignon carcasses left dead and tantalizingly edible after the attack?! With the help of Lenya the cook, Melphiera concocts a plan to turn the Berguignon from vicious monsters to delicious hors d'oeuvres!
I really think this is one of the few series that I've read recently that's able to combine interesting fantasy and world-building, with a sweet & slow-burn romance with a pinch of weird food/cooking really well.
Melphie and Duke Galbraith are both so dorky yet clearly enamored with each other, which somewhat rare to see in romance manga. I like that it's obvious to the characters and to us, the readers, that they are the obvious couple, but since they're both quite awkward, they're still working up the confidence to be lovey-dovey. I'm okay with that. I actually found it endearing when Melphie admires the duke's body while he was changing for dinner ("What a wonderful set of muscles he has. With every movement, I can tell how supple they are...not a single ounce going to waste! Not really suitable for eating though." lol she literally has a one-track mind) and then the Duke having his own thoughts about how cute Melphie is in her various outfits that the ladies-in-waiting had made for her.
Such an enjoyable volume that I don't even mind the cliff-hanger at the end.
Such an enjoyable entry to the series. You will find yourself (if you have been reading all the previous volumes) maybe enjoying this one a bit more. The flow of this volume was more of my type of storytelling, and the volume has enough going on to be tantalizing to the reader on multiple levels. With many monsters killed, there are many potential dish possibilities! Individuals recovering from the battling from volume 7 and the humor spots to make you adore the characters, and the relationships hit the mark. I don't like to say 3.5 stars, but I feel a flat 3 is insignificant. Maybe on another read I may bump it up to 4 stars. It was a very enjoyable read.
A unique premise, but I'm really loving this series! The romance between the "Blood Mad Duke" Aristide and his "Voracious Villainess" Melphie is too cute for words. It's a bit of a slow-burn in that aspect, but the humor and the experiments with monster meat make up for it. The creator behind this is absolutely genius. So creative! The variety of creatures, their abilities, the magic. Not to mention the menu! At one point, the descriptions of slaughtering one of the creatures made me want to throw up, but I did not stop reading! I'm looking forward to future installments.
It was fine! Some pretty dresses. But it felt like we spent the whole volume on one problem, and then we didn’t even solve that problem by the end of it…
