Firefly Summer #1

The Guest Cottage

Rate this book
In this uplifting series debut, forgiveness and unlikely friendship blossom in the haven of a quiet lakeside town when two very different women bond over one man’s betrayals.

Marlow Heddings is starting over. She’s carried the outrage of her husband Dylan’s affair with a younger woman—and the expectations of his family’s powerful Chicago holdings company—long enough. Now, after another devastating twist of fate, she’s unapologetically moving on.

Arriving in tiny Bramble, Kentucky, Marlow revels in her freedom, swapping her executive suits for sundresses . . . and scouting places to open her dream boutique. Best of all is her new residence, an adorable cottage with gorgeous lake views—and a breathtaking landlord, former Marine Cort Easton. Soon they’re sharing dockside morning coffee and nighttime firefly gazing. Marlow’s new life feels like a dream.

Then Pixie Nolan arrives on her doorstep. With a shocking secret.

To Marlow’s astonishment, Dylan’s “other woman” is a desperate girl of nineteen, destitute, exhausted, and disowned by her family. Defying her manipulative in-laws’ demands, and surprising even herself, Marlow vows to lay down roots in Bramble and help Pixie get on her feet. Then they’ll part ways. But empathy has a way of forging bonds. As Marlow grows close to the hard-working, devoted young woman, she becomes something of a big sister to Pixie.

Now, with each sunrise, Marlow awakens to the life she was truly meant to live, one filled with deepening connections, supportive friendship . . . and even a second chance at love.

I often wish I could find my own cottage on the lake where I could escape and create a beautiful simple life. Foster paints an amazing picture in this quaint yet odd town in the middle of nowhere.

Interesting dynamics abound between a city girl in desperate need of a change and her hot new landlord and I love them all.

The story has so many different levels to it. Between divorce and death, and mother-in-law‘s, father’s in-laws, quirky residents who stand up for you and protect you. Amazing family dynamics that dive develop out of nowhere. And of course, a blooming romance with an amazing male character.

There’s so much to love about the story. The strength of a woman. The kindness of others. A strong supportive man. Descriptions of a beautiful home on the lake

Foster wins us over with every paragraph. The story is dynamic, exciting, and she throws in many surprises along the way. Her descriptions and characters are vivid and leave a lasting impression.

This clean romance is a perfect summer read that takes you through an awesome experience that will make your heart sing. Love it!

Marlow couldn't stay in a town with her pushy, wealthy in-laws and the town where her husband cheated on her and then died in a car crash.

She had to leave right after the funeral - she couldn't play the grieving widow.

Where would she go?

She found the perfect cottage and the perfect landlord. He was a hunk, and the cottage was gorgeous.

How will all of this work?

And who was knocking on the door?

Find out in this sweet read with great characters.

This isn’t my normal genre, but I was drawn in because of the setting and the positive vibes.

If you need an uplifting read,THE GUEST COTTAGE is one to add to your reading list.

You won't want to leave the characters. I hope there is sequel. 5/5

Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

“Bramble is the kind of place that lets you trust again.”

Marlow Heddings arrives in “nowhere town” Bramble, Kentucky, free of a bad marriage, manipulative in-laws, and prying eyes. Her plan is to ground herself and start afresh.

Cort Easton, a Bramble resident and former Marine, is also starting afresh, having recently buried his mother and started his new life as a civilian.

When their paths cross, their lives are enriched.

This is a fantastic book about found family and treating each other, regardless of our brokenness, with love and acceptance, and offering hope and purpose. Most of all, I appreciated that Marlow was crafted with responses rather than reactions and that she never appeared to be/acted like a victim. It was her attitude and Cort’s supportive role that kept me reading. I don’t know if I could have done the same; life just kept demanding that she pivot, adjust, and continue on. I appreciated the inspiration.

⚠️two instances of swearing, closed-door fade to black romance.

I’m looking forward to book 2 in this series, The Lake House, which will be published in May 2026.

I loved this! You get the small town side characters that bring a little extra to the story. You have the heroine who was treated badly by her husband so she starts over in the small town where she learns to be herself again. And the best part is the quiet, but steady hero who didn’t realize how much he was missing in his life until he meets the heroine. A few other things happen that I adored but I don’t want to give it all away. I really hope the author has plans for more in this series. It was a lovely read.

"Life had a way of throwing unwelcome surprise parties that could leave a person completely defeated."

Marlow Heddings is ready for a new start. Her husband, Dylan, had an affair with a younger woman. So off to Bramble, Kentucky, she goes. She didn't anticipate her Lakeview Cottage or her marine landlord Cort Easton, for that matter, to be so beautiful. But least of all, she never imagined Pixie, the nineteen year old woman who had an affair with her husband, to show up on her doorstep asking for help. Is her heart big enough to help?

I picked this book up while in the Miami Airport. I thought the cover was beautiful and mistakenly packed my current read at the time in my luggage. The story was very unbelievable throughout for me. I find it hard to believe Marlow would have that quick and easy of a friendship with Pixie. The whole idea of the town having a limit on the number of citizens they have was odd. While certain parts of the book made smile, overall it fell short for me. 2.5 ⭐️'s rounded up.

Thank you to the publisher for the free ARC from a Goodreads giveaway! I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

I let my mom borrow this one first, and when she hesitated when I asked her how it was, I knew I was in for a time. I would text her as I was reading, quoting some of the more ridiculous lines and giving her my thoughts and she finally said, “Sadly, it does not get better.”

Marlow was really off-putting. When asked if she ever “processed” her own food, which, while accurate, was such a non-conversational way of asking if she ever prepared and ate anything she caught herself, her reply was equally ridiculous, saying, “Sadly, I was raised upper middle class and then married into wealth.” Umm… I beg your finest pardon? Are hunting and fishing only activities for the destitute? Actually, I don’t think we could have been beaten over the head more that she was wealthy. Then we were expected to find her so charming because she wanted to be a waitress in her new small town? Good grief.

I think the author wanted us to be as in love with Marlow as she was, and I just…wasn’t. Lines like this were repeated ad nauseam: “Dinner, of course, was incredible, and they told her so. Marlow accepted their praise graciously, but then, a woman like her was surely used to accolades.” Insert eye roll. We get it. She’s amazing and everyone thinks so (apparently except for me). And then we have an entire town giving Marlow a standing ovation at the end? You’ve got to be kidding me.

And Cort. I wanted to like him, but his character development just seemed so shallow. Where Marlow was constantly talked about in terms of her net worth, endless mentions of him being a Marine were Cort’s equivalent.

The dialogue (especially between Cort and Marlow and between Marlow and Pixie) was so cringey. It felt like a Hallmark movie but make it even cornier. Every conversation felt like there was some grand declaration. Herman told her to take the rest of the night off when she had an hour left of her shift, and she replied, “Oh, no. I’m not cutting you short. I’m supposed to be here until closing, and by God, I’ll be here.” Soooo dramatic.

We got hints of relationship development between Cort and Marlow in the beginning, but then things went off the rails when they discuss where their relationship is going, and he immediately says he wants it to be heading toward his bed. And then for the rest of the book, all they do is paw at each other like horny teenagers.

I about lost it when Marlow was trying to tell Pixie how to mother her baby. Pixie worshipped the ground Marlow walked on, and I wasn’t really sure why since Marlow was so abrasive and thought so highly of herself (though I’m not sure that was the author’s intent). Their conversations were so repetitive and unnatural, and I just couldn’t take it anymore.

Since this was an uncorrected proof, there were a couple of typos (and a Joann and a Joanna—Pixie’s real name), and there were times I had to read a line multiple times to make sense of it. Sometimes, it was hard to tell who was speaking, which was made even more difficult when what was being said didn’t seem to make sense in the context. I’m not sure if these were addressed in the final copy.

My mom didn’t like this because she said it was too predictable. My issues were apparently more than that. This author’s writing style just isn’t for me.

Marlow, a woman in the process of a divorce until her husband dies, rents a cottage in a small town to realign her priorities of being true to herself first. Unexpectedly, her husband’s mistress and ‘their’ baby show up on her doorstep; young, desperate, scared, lonely, broke and broken. After the initial shock, Marlow decides she’s going to help Pixie and Andy. Along with the landlord, Cort, a Marine, and a friendly but “you can’t live here forever … we have enough people” kind of town, the three of them navigate the challenges with the in-laws, recovering from Dylan’s death, a new baby, and wondering what the future holds.

All I can say is: What a sweet little novel, touted as a great beach read, and I would agree. I believe it has just one swear word (from Colt, and they had it coming), the setting is picturesque and the kind of place you wish exited in real life. I loved it!!

I must correct the author here as there is no such thing as a ex-Marine; “Once a Marine, always a Marine … Oorah … Semper Fi”

A story of love, forgiveness and starting over.
Marlow Heddings is moving on. After learning of her husband's affair with a much younger woman, filing for divorce and dealing with the expectations of her husband's powerful Chicago family, she has had enough.
Arriving in Bramble, Kentucky Marlow swaps her executive lifestyle for freedom and sweatpants. She finds a small cottage with a wonderful view of the lake and an even more wonderful landlord, a former Marine. The sparks begin to ignite and soon the two begin sharing coffee and firefly gazing.
Her peace and quiet is then disrupted when someone shows up on her doorstep with a shocking secret.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Lori Foster’s latest novel, a heartwarming first book in a new series, regales readers with Marlow Heddings’ journey to a new beginning. After her husband Dylan’s funeral, Marlow realizes she’s been dwelling on his betrayal for too long. Seeking a new start, she heads to Bramble, Kentucky, where she’ll be staying for the foreseeable future.

Marlow believes this fresh start will bring her peace. Leaving her high-powered life behind, she craves a more relaxed environment in Bramble. In fact, she’s contemplating making it her permanent home and even starting her own boutique. Things are looking up for her, but more serious matters arise. Also, could her sexy new landlord be a romantic interest? Is she even considering romance?

Just as Marlow starts settling in, she receives quite the shock. A much younger woman named Pixie appears on her doorstep, carrying news that will change everything. Pixie is pregnant with Dylan’s child and has limited options. Marlow can’t bear the thought of Pixie suffering and immediately offers her comfort and security. This act of kindness deeply upsets Dylan’s parents, heightening Marlow’s protective instincts.

This heartwarming story is filled with endearing characters, particularly Marlow. While the focus is on Marlow’s journey to begin anew, her finding love and the other relationships in the book are quite delightful. Lori Foster’s writing is captivating, and this series promises to be another gem. It’s the perfect choice for your first summer read.

Many thanks to Kensington and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I enjoy curling up with one of Lori Foster’s novels. I always know I will find delightful characters, swoon-worthy slow burns and quaint/unique towns. In The Guest Cottage, book one in the Firefly Summer standalone romance series, we meet Marlow Heddings as she buries her cheating husband. She is suffering from betrayal and loss. She turns her back from her old life and rents a lakeside cottage in Bramble, Kentucky, and begins anew. The tale that unfolds delivers found family, new begins and characters you will want to spend time with.

I liked Marlow, and that feeling only grew as the story progressed. This is a story of a strong woman with class, who uplifts others, and deserves a happily ever after.

I loved Bramble, Kentucky, with its strange council that controls the population. From her handsome, quiet landlord to the local ladies and their casserole I was all in. Marlow has ideas about the way her new life will look, but her in-laws in Chicago have other ideas. Then someone she does not expect shows up at her door and Marlow’s grace knows no bounds.

The romance was a slow-burn, and I loved their chemistry and interactions. Former Marine Cort Easton is Marlow’s landlord, and the town loves him. Trust me, you will fall for him, too. He is always there to lend a hand, and the townsfolk think of him as their son. Seeing Marlow and Cort fall was sweet. The story was a magical experience, like catching fireflies on a summer night in July, with the perfect amount of warmth.

If you love uplifting, sweet small-town romances with a touch of heat and a whole lota heart, you’ll want to grab The Guest Cottage. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Cheating happiness and family

A story of Marlow Heddings, A woman who is trying to start a new life after divorcing her cheating husband that died right before their divorce is finalized. Marlow is left having to make the funeral arrangements with her mother in law. She promises herself she will leave right afterwards. She can't stay one minute more. Her in laws have become very reliant on her and don't get why she is adamant about leaving.
Cort owns a few properties in a small town called B ramble that has rules about how many people can live there. Right now there is 401 because they accepted him and that's because they loved his mother so much. He feels so much appreciation to the town for all they did for his mom and him now that he's the resident handyman too. Marlow is so excited when Cort tells her she can rent one of his properties for a bit.
This has so much small town charm, neighborly gossip, families behaving badly, miscommunication, heartwarming love, and so much more. I was blown away that I haven't read any of Lori Foster's books before. That will be fixed immediately. This comes with high praise from me.

Welcome to Bramble, Kentucky, a unique town that keeps its population tightly controlled. No one is allowed to permanently move here unless approved by the “originals.”

Marlow Heddings is looking to start fresh by renting a vacation home in Bramble. She has lost herself after finding her husband was cheating and then died before their divorce could be final. Bramble seems to be the perfect place to heal.

Cort Easton moved his mother to Bramble several years prior to leaving the military and stayed after she passed. Bramble accepted his mom and they’ve also accepted him.

Bramble is the perfect place for two people who are lost in their own ways, to find themselves again and to find each other.

Such a fantastic book! Marlow is so positively optimistic even after everything she goes through. Cort is so understanding and supportive. I love all the characters in Bramble as well, such a hoot.

3,5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (rounded up), mentions of spice 🌶️
I went into this book lowkey blindly and I think it worked out to my favor. This book turned out to be a slice of life type of book with sprinkles of romance and creating a friendship between two very different aged women (20 & 35). There was also some drama to spice it up which I enjoyed. The plot was entertaining, it kept me interested pretty much all the way through.
PROS:
- very nice atmosphere and I loved the setting overall
- likeable characters, none of the main characters were annoying at all
- writing style was easy to get through
- the friendship between our two fmc's was my favourite part <3
CONS:
- personally the chapters were way too long for me
- Marlow (fmc) and Cort (mmc) were not really a believable couple in my opinion, I didn't see their chemistry
- idk why but everyone in the book was obsessed with the fact that Cort was a former Marine and it caused overmentioning that in this book in my opinion. like cool and all but we get that you were a Marine... don't need to remind us a million times.

Thank you to NetGalley, Kensington Publishing and the author for the ARC of this book!

This book was way too saccharine for me. And I can be a very syrupy person sometimes. The dialogue was spoken in 90% platitudes. The main character had very conflicting character traits. Don’t want to say what exactly without giving it away, but one minutes she’s a savvy business person who has a person to do “this” for her and another person to do “that” for her, she never had to shop for herself, or make her own meals etc. Then she learns to live on her own and magically and triumphantly nails being a waitress on day one. But when a surprise character enters her life she all of a sudden has the gravitas to tell this certain character how to take care of herself, what to do, how to feel… it was like a whole new character. The scenes were too nuanced, had to go back and reread because I caught myself asking wait what just happened? Or where are they now, they were in the cottage and now they’re at the tavern? Or maybe that’s because my mind kept wondering off. And did I mention so. Many. Platitudes. Too many to count on every page.

Lori Foster, the Author of “The Guest Cottage” has written a captivating, memorable, and heartfelt novel. The Genres for this novel are Contemporary Fiction, Romance, Summer Reads, Fiction, and Friendship. In this well-written novel, Lori Foster vividly describes the nostalgia from summer memories, the landscape, scenery, and the colorful and dramatic characters. This reminds me of years ago, when I would catch fireflies, and then free them with my friends.I also have wonderful memories of being near the water, and catching sunrises and sunsets.

The female protagonist of the story, Marlow Heddings, arrives in Bramble, Kentucky for a fresh start. She rents a cozy, comfortable cottage with unbelievable lake views, and a landlord that makes her heart stand still. Marine Cort Easton is one of the neighborhood’s heroes. He is always around to help and assist. Her recently deceased husband had cheated on her, and Marlow hopes to start a new business away from her husband’s dysfunctional and manipulative parents.

Pixie, the other “woman” that her husband was with, shocks Marlow at the Guest Cottage with some surprises. Pixie is now twenty and needs help. Marlow makes new friendships. There are some twists and turns, and some troubling events that occur.

I appreciate that Lori Foster discusses the importance of family, friendship, forgiveness, love and hope. I highly recommend this thought-provoking and enjoyable novel.

Heartwarming story of Marlow Heddington who came to the guest cottage in a tiny town to start over having just buried her cheating husband. Her reinvention of herself and creating a new family, a found family, will keep you engaged and warm your heart. I basically read it in one session. My only quibble is the characters were almost too perfect, but what can I say, I still loved it. Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really loved this book, there was such a great feeling throughout the story and set in what sounded a beautiful setting.

Marlow is starting over. She was divorcing her cheating husband when he unexpectedly died, so whilst she's still continuing with her moving on (quitting her job/moving house) she feels some sympathy towards his parents, even though they are very controlling (rich/very conscious about their social standing). As far as they are concerned their son was a saint, which he obviously wasn't.

She moves to a wonderful sounding little town with a small population and rents a property on a lake, making friends with her landlord and neighbour, Cort, who eventually becomes more than just a friend, and her life is going great - albeit with a lot of pestering from the ex-in laws. But then Pixie (ex-girlfriend of the ex-husband) arrives and everything is thrown into a tailspin!

Marlow was such a lovely character, strong but very sympathetic and understanding, always willing to give people a chance and do the right thing, but all without being a pushover. Quite a fine line to balance but she managed it. The ex-in laws were a complete nightmare for most of the story, but Marlow, Pixie and Cort stood strong against them and everything was eventually sorted out.

A really lovely read that I would thoroughly recommend, wonderful main characters and great side characters too, I didn't want it to end - and as this seems to be the first of a new series I can't wait to return to Bramble in the next book.

While the small-town charm was definitely there, reading The Guest Cottage felt like stepping back into a romance novel from a bygone era – and not entirely in a good way. The conservative undertones were pronounced and this felt like a throwback to the more traditional gender roles in 80s and 90s romances.

The characters felt a bit familiar. Thus was a classic, sweet small-town romance with a happily-ever-after. However, my biggest issue lay with the portrayal of the older female main character's interactions with the younger one. Despite Marlow's reasons to dislike Pixie, the way she treated her rubbed me the wrong way. Cringe vibes!

This book might appeal to readers seeking a more traditional and less steamy romance, but the clichéd characters and the uncomfortable dynamic between the female leads left me wanting more depth and a more contemporary sensibility.

Received as a Goodreads giveaway. This book has so much potential to be cute but the dialogue is so forced and awkward. Almost overly scripted. Marlows tone seems so fake and older than she probably should be and I couldn’t get past it. I think if the conversations flowed better and everyone spoke normally it would have a lot of potential.

- Small town
- Military
- Healing journey
- No third-act breakup
- Supportive hero

When Marlow's soon-to-be ex-husband is killed in a car crash, she leaves her suffocating life to start over. She rents a cute lake house in a faraway small town called Bramble. Her landlord, Cort, is the town hero and a former Marine. As Marlow and Cort slowly fall into each other, Marlow's in-laws, rife with grief, won't stop harassing her to come back. One day, her late husband's mistress shows up with his (surprise!) baby. What will Marlow do?

The plot was promising. Marlow's strength and desire to move on were palpable. I loved the detail about her learning how to braid her hair. It was nice to read about women supporting women and the transformative power that can hold. I loved the descriptions of the town and Cort's property. The side characters (minus the in-laws) were wonderful and the town certainly held charm.

That being said, "The Guest Cottage" was not for me. I found it bland and the romance aspect left a lot to be desired—I wanted more tension. More than that, though, I needed Cort's Marine status and Marlow's financial advantage to stop being side characters. Although the main characters were young (early/mid-30s), the book's voice skewed older and more classic literature than modern. I would consider this book to be Women's Lit, not Romance. To me, this is a book that film studios pick up to make more interesting for the screen.

The cover is BEAUTIFUL. Thank you to Kensington Publishing for the ARC!
