"Our demons don't want to play but they sure as hell recognise each other"

Three attempts at staying clean after rehab and Jem Jones, Blue Phoenix guitarist, is determined this time he’ll succeed. Haunted by his recent past, Jem throws himself into the one addiction he still has left: his music. With Blue Phoenix on a break, he looks elsewhere for a place to channel his creativity and discovers up-and-coming band Ruby Riot.

For lead singer, Ruby, breaking into the music scene could break the cycle of abuse that’s controlled her life since she was a child. Finding release through music, the growing success of the band has set Ruby on the path to regaining her identity and self-esteem.

Ruby Riot brings Jem and Ruby together but they recognise they have more in common than their passion for music. Can this understanding of each other break down the carefully constructed barriers they’re trapped behind? Or is loving somebody too big a risk to take?

When Jem’s past slams into his present, he has to face the reality behind what made him the man he is and why he hurts the people he wants to love.

And as Ruby reaches out to help Jem, she discovers trying to fix somebody comes with the risk of getting cut by one of their shattered pieces.

Rising is the fourth book in the Blue Phoenix series. It can be read as a standalone but contains minor spoilers for the other books in the series.

Trigger warning: scenes of domestic violence.

Technically this story is a standalone, but please note that it is part of the Blue Phoenix series, so it does contain spoilers and overlaps with previous books, which should be read first.

Having read the other three books in this series I was really looking forward to reading Jem’s story. We’ve already met Jem and to be fair, he’s an arse. But as the Blue Phoenix story continued we learned a bit more about him and it’s clear that he’s a troubled and tortured character! This is exactly why I was looking forward to this book, to read something that’s a bit darker and less lovey-dovey.

description

It’s extremely hard not to love Lisa Swallows writing when she writes life into Ruby Tuesday and Jem. After briefly meeting Jem in previous books it's such a joy to finally get to know him, laugh with him, hurt with him and most importantly, love with him. I think so far this is by far my favourite Blue Phoenix book, and I especially love how Lisa doesn't shy away from all the ugly and hurt these two tortured souls fate.

With a shitty childhood, Jem has had a really tough start to life.
The few times he experienced any happiness it was with his friends, the Blue Phoenix members. When the band took off Jem indulged in pretty much anything. Alcohol, drugs, women, you name it. This has caused plenty of breakdowns, arguments, not to forget meltdowns. When this story starts Jem has just returned from rehab, again. In order to stay on this sober path Jem needs to keep himself busy and thus, he offers to help Blue Phoenix’s manager out by finding the bands new support group for their next tour.

Ruby Tuesday, wow, what a character.
Where Jem’s childhood was shitty, Ruby’s was downright horrific. Nothing has gone her way, she’s lost everything and everyone and when we meet her, she’s stuck in an abusive relationship. The only ray of light into Ruby’s dark world, is her band, Ruby Riot.

In Jem and Ruby’s story there’s so much anxiety, fear, pain and self-destruction. Like the other band members, these two also has a lot of drama going on, but it’s different! It’s a completely different layer of drama and it suits the story so well.

Having read books 1, 1.5, and 2 in this series, I was really looking forward to reading Jem's story as he has intrigued me from the first time we met him. Talk about a troubled soul - not to be cliche, but he wrote the book!!

Jem has had the worst most fucked-up childhood ever. Fact. As a young adult, he enjoyed massive success with his band Blue Phoenix, and he indulged in all that the hedonistic lifestyle had to offer. Cue plenty of breakdowns, arguments, and meltdowns. He has just returned from his latest rehab stint during a period of band downtime. In order to avoid his demons, and keep distracted, he offers to help his Manager Steve out, in identifying a new support group for the next BP tour.

Enter Ruby Tuesday. Ruby's childhood puts Jem's in the shade. She has had one difficult event after another and now she is trapped in an abusive relationship that is threatening to destroy the one good thing in her life - her music.

Ruby and Jem crash into each others lives explosively. There is plenty of drama and angst as they enter into a game of pull and push. Both are so damaged by past events that it's hard to open up to anyone else, even if that other person is more emphatic than your average individual. Gradually, though, they find a way to support and love each other and it was so heartwarming to read (especially the last few chapters.)

For me, the underlying message is not to underestimate the redemptive power of love.

This is far and away the best-written book in this series and there isn't a single thing I could fault. The pacing is spot-on, the writing is superb, characterisation is insightful and raw, powerful, and it's difficult not to feel a huge emotional upheaval reading it.

I'd give ten stars if I could. This can be read as a standalone though I'd highly recommend reading it as part of this great series.

::: Book 4 in the Blue Phoenix Series | Rock Star | Standalone | Dual POV :::
Rising- demons photo Rising-demons_zps6abceaf2.jpg
The Blue Phoenix series is one of my favorite rockstar series out there. It’s less on the hot, steamy side, and more on the drama and real-life dilemmas. They all possess strong qualities of authenticity that allows for such a flawless connection to the characters.
Each story is filled with obstacles that the characters must face all while trying to keep up their rock god façades.
For readers that have been reading this series from the beginning, I think it’s safe to say we’ve been eagerly awaiting Jem Jones’ book. Not to take away from the other BP guys, but Jem has been a rubik’s cube that we all desperately wanted to figure out. Readers have been given a taste of his dark and damaged past in the previous books, but hearing it from his point of view takes us to a whole other level.

The world knows Jem Jones as a bad boy, rocker with the typical cravings: sex, drugs and rock & roll. To a select few, Jem Jones is a broken man who lost his way long ago. With the help of his best friends/bandmates, he’s well on his way to recovery. But no one can help him heal quite like the fierce and volatile lead singer of Ruby Riot.

Fresh out of rehab, Jem is looking for a distraction from his addictions that constantly scream out to him. His manager advises him to seek out an opening band for the upcoming Blue Phoenix tour. Ruby Riot is the band that grabs Jem’s attention and he makes them his project. He believes in this band with everything he has, but is acutely aware of the drama at the center of it.

Ruby comes off as, well for lack of a better word, a bitch. But that is just a front she puts up so that no one tries to enter her world more than she allows. Rescued by her brother’s best friend, Ruby is grateful to her now boyfriend, Dan. He took her out of an abusive hell hole and for that she feels indebted to him. Which is why she continues to take his verbal and sometimes physical abuse.

Abuse is one thing Jem knows very well. As he makes it his mission to groom Ruby Riot for rock stardom, he also feels the need to save Ruby. At the same time, he knows he should stay away from her for her own safety.

Jem doesn’t do love and he has too much on his mind to even think of a woman past a one night stand. Yet Ruby manages to slowly crack away at his glass walls. In the midst of all the drama and chaos, their troubles push them together and enables them to form a bond like no other.
 photo a939c709-b955-4fa8-bc57-0478bf0278d8_zpsec2d7b84.png
As I suspected, this book took on a completely different tone from the others in the series. This one is much darker and downright grim at times. Despite the severity of the story, it was amazing to see the light that rose up from all that darkness.
This story was very much about healing and getting a second chance. Not a second chance at love, but instead, a chance to renew themselves individually.

I highly recommend checking this entire series out even if you’re not necessarily a fan of rock star books. I’d recommend starting from book one and reading in order, but Rising can certainly be read as a standalone.

4.5 STARS

The Blue Phoenix Series has been one of my favorite rock series since the beginning, and Rising just solidifies my love for it!!! I think I’ve found a new favorite Blue Phoenix guy!

We’ve met all of the guys from Blue Phoenix before, but Jem was the one I really wanted to get to know. It turns out the one Blue Phoenix member that I loved to hate is now the one I just plain LOVE. Jem Jones isn’t what you see on the outside. He’s broken and messed up, and he hides behind his rough bad boy image. The bad boy ends up finding his mirror image in the fiery redheaded front woman of Ruby Riot. Ruby is strong and guarded just like Jem and for a very good reason.

Jem’s story was a bit darker and serious than Dylan and Liam’s. Jem’s rough edges come from the shards of broken glass which are his world. Jem’s careful not to expose anyone to those pieces. In Rising, we carefully maneuver around the broken glass and delve into Jem’s not so glamourous background and childhood. We get to see every splinter and every fragment. Everyone thinks rock stars are golden, but it’s very easy to hide the truth when you really want to.

Having just gotten out of rehab, Jem find himself in need of a distraction. That distraction come in the form of an up and coming band called Ruby Riot. Ruby Riot becomes Jem’s pet project – scope them out, polish their sound, and get them ready to open up for Blue Phoenix on the next tour. Jem’s interest was purely musical until he lays eyes on the band’s front woman, Ruby. Ruby proves to be more than just a distraction for Jem. If you think Jem is plagued by demons, Ruby is followed around (literally) by one of the scariest. The more time Ruby and Jem spend together, the more Jem begins to see Ruby as more than just a distraction and much more than a random hook up which is what he’s used to. Jem doesn’t do relationships or “girlfriends”….. until Ruby. Jem and Ruby are more alike than either ever thought possible. Could Jem have found his savior or will Ruby end up being cut by one of Jem’s shards of glass?

This series just gets better and better. I loved it from the very beginning with Summer Sky, but Rising is DEFINITELY my favorite Blue Phoenix book to date. Rising is a bit more raw than Dylan or Liam’s story. And, I think that’s what makes this my favorite to date.

If you are a fan of rock star books, I can’t recommend the Blue Phoenix series enough. Although Rising is part of a series, it could be read as a standalone. But, you really should just read the series from beginning to end because it’s just soooooooo good.

(Oh!!! And, was I just so caught up in Jem that I missed the bacon???? Please tell me I just missed it and it wasn’t just plain missing…. I need bacon!)

Holy hell a book about JEM! He is the crazy member of Blue Pheonix, and I couldn't wait to get to know more about him from reading about him in the first three books!

I feel like this book was all about second chances, it's Jem we are talking about here. And while he is super crazy and downright grimy- he still has emotions too. And I definitely was excited to see which direction his story was going to take.

Jem is the lead guitarist for Blue Phoenix, and he has a crazy past that he is trying to get over- and get his focus solely on music, the thing he lives for. I mean we all know that Jem is the crazy one, the dirty talker, the guy you love to hate, and possibly hate to love. He definitely showed a little of his lovey dovey romantic side which was a nice change of pace, from the somewhat man-whore he typically likes to portray.

Ruby is the lead singer of Ruby Riot- and wouldn't you know it, she has an insane past and also has demons she is trying to get over. She puts up a front and hides her emotions well. I really liked her though-she was strong and had a backbone when she needed it most.

And when the two of them got together- it was like a match made in heaven! But heaven isn't so easily reached- not when you are these two. So there were some wild twists and turns I didn't see coming, but that's what makes this story more intriguing. They are totally both courageous and overcome huge obstacles, and I'm glad we got to get inside their heads.

"To me, you're Jem and not the Jem Jones they say you are. This Jem is a good guy. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. They don't know you."

I love that line! It's one of my favorite from the entire series- seriously. And the first two- Summer Sky and Falling Sky are the ones I usually quote from, but this line is just special. Lisa Swallow is a fantastic author who always takes me on an unpredictable journey.

Wow! Rising, Book 4 in the Blue Phoenix series, has to be the most emotionally charged story in this series yet.

Jem Jones, Blue Phoenix lead guitarist and overall bad boy, has had a pretty shitty time of things for a quite some time. He rode the rock god wave like a pro. He was talented, gorgeous, young, and had everything going for him. Unfortunately for Jem, he also fell pray to the demons of fame and fortune. Drugs, drink, women, an overall reckless lifestyle. He went past the stage of fun and letting go, and fell in to dangerous and reckless category. After failed attempts at rehab, it took something soul shattering and life changing to wake him up. Jem admitted defeat and went to rehab again, determined to make it work this time. That was before, were now starting Jem's story and Jem is clean and trying to move on with his life. Blue Phoenix took a break after certain events starting colliding. During this break Jem is attempting to get his life back on track. He needs a distraction, and that comes in the form of scouting talent. New, fresh bands to be the next biggest thing. It's whilst doing this he finds Ruby.

Ruby Riot are an Oxford band. They have huge amounts of talent, and want to take it all the way. After a gig one night, they find Blue Phoenix guitarist, Jem Jones waiting for them. He loves their sound, and wants to help them make it big.

Lead singer Ruby, is a girl whose music is everything to her. It's her escape from all the dark. Anything outside of music, for Ruby is pain and hurt. When she is with Ruby Riot she see's everything clearly again. She hides beneath her makeup, tattoos and blazing scarlet hair that shields her.

"The brightness of my ink matches my hair, the tattoos symbolic of my attempt to cover up the girl beneath. Some people have tattoos because they're significant. I went for the brightest pictures I liked because I wanted a rainbow of colour to cover my life."

Not only does Jem see something in Ruby Rising, he also see's something in Ruby. Part of himself.

"Ruby is the epitome of myself. She's here and her eyes are acknowledging what I repeatedly see: we're from the same place and we don't want to be there."

Jem and Ruby try to fight the attraction they have for each other, for many reasons. They both have their demons, constantly eating away at them. They appear to be perfect for each other, but is the timing ever going to be right. They have to fight certain battles before they can give in to what they feel. Neither one of them believe they deserve to find happiness in each other, and it proves to be a huge obstacle for them.

I felt Rising had such a different tone to it. It set it apart from the other Blue Phoenix books for many reasons. When we first met all the band members in Summer Sky, we got to see a glimpse of the men and it gave us a clue as to what they would be like, once their stories were told. I always thought Jem's story would be the hardest, the most painful, emotionally. Although he had the talent to wind people up (to put it nicely) and had a quite a way with words. He made trouble for some people, and made a lot of enemies. It didn't exactly paint a very pretty picture of him. He was seen to be the bad boy of the four of them, and probably not the most obvious book boyfriend material. Well, given the chance to have his story told has completely changed all that.

Jem may have once been the black sheep of the Blue Phoenix family, but after reading Rising, he has proved he can rock the potential book boyfriend title, just as good if not better than Dylan and Liam.

We get a glimpse of Jem's past, and perhaps part of why he ended up going off the rails. We also get to see him at his rawest, post rehab. He wants to change and will fight to get there, even if it's hard. Rising isn't set in the days of Jem's crazy days, nor is it set when he goes in to rehab. His story begins at the start of his last chance, to see if he can make it when some of the worst things are thrown at him. This is why I have grown to love Jem. He doesn't always make the right choices, he acts impulsively and doesn't always think of others, in his decisions. Yet, you can see why he does what he does. He is suffering, and doesn't handle it well. Ruby is the light in his dark days, and makes him want to try harder.

"With Jem, we can be in a safe place together; we don't have to be alone in the world if we share the good in ourselves. Together, now, we're wrapped on the edge of this place we belong, the shattered pieces of our lives surrounding us. With the secrets we shared came the understanding that not everything is broken forever."

Their relationship, if you can call it that to start with, was so sweet. It was almost like a first love kind of relationship. Neither of them knew the right way to do things, and made a lot of mistakes. They both had trouble communicating, and were awful with social skills, but it was sweet and funny and it made them so unbelievably perfect for each other. There was a lot of frustrating moments, watching Jem being typical Jem, but it just added to how different their journey was.

Of course this book isn't all tender romance, and learning about each other. There is a side to this book which takes a darker and far more emotional turn. I'm not going to go into the other aspects of their story, as it needs to be experienced as part of the story. I will say, be prepared for some really emotional and hard stumbling blocks along the way for Jem and Ruby. It is very raw, and will put you through some crazy emotion changes, from tears to anger, then relief....eventually.

So, be prepared for the rocky road that is Jem Jones story. Another beautiful and tender love story, but with far harder obstacles to overcome along the way. I can pretty much guarantee that readers and fans will look at bad boy Jem in a whole new light, after this story.

"To me, you're Jem and not the Jem Jones they say you are. This Jem is a good guy. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. They don't know you."

The Blue Phoenix series has come a long way, and I have to say, I'm never disappointed. Lisa manages to keep pulling these addictive stories out of the bag. The world of Blue Phoenix is crazy and full on, but you just can't stop reading about them. Even forgetting they are fictional most of the time. It's not just the stories and characters that have me keep coming back for more, like the groupie that I am, but also Lisa's captivating writing. She still continues to make me feel, like I couldn't possibly stop reading. I can't wait for whatever comes next. Everything from this world is full on, nail biting, and breath holding entertainment. Fully recommended to everyone. 5 Stars.

Brilliant

I loved this book, although to be honest I have loved all the 5 books I have read in this series so far.
There is a lot goes on in this book Jem and Ruby have issues which become apparent through out the story.
There are twists, turns and surprises, which just makes the book even better. You can feel the emotions that are in this book some of them hit you full on. I found myself wanting to knock Jem and Ruby's heads together and then wanting to give them both a hug and tell them everything would work out. I got pulled in to this book right from the first chapter.
This book is worth more than 5 stars and I wish I could give it more.
I highly recommend this series it really is fantastic.

Rising

This was a dark read. Jen has been abusing himself for years, drugs and alcohol his choice of poison. But after the last stint in rehab he has his wake up call. He ends up looking at local talent for a front for the band. Here he meets up with Ruby. Lead singer of Ruby Riot. She also comes from an abusive relationship. They are broken but together they get the chance to heal. If the outside world lets them.

in her eyes I can see she exists in the same place I do: a lost place at the edge of the world.
Did time stand still? The world fade away? Souls meet across the stars? I should give this shit to Dylan for one of his pathetic love songs. That shit doesn't happen.

Jem Jones has finally reached his breaking point. After the recent events that had his life spiraling out of control, he is determined that his third stint in rehab will be his last. His focus has been on his sobriety and keeping himself distracted from the things that could cause a relapse. Music is the only healthy addiction left in his life and may be the thing that keeps his head above water but with Blue Phoenix on a break he has to find another way to reach his outlet. Funneling his energy into scouting for bands to open for Blue Phoenix on their next tour is what brings him across the up and coming band 'Ruby Riot' and suddenly he finds his outlet. He makes it his mission to help the band get they attention they deserve and prepare them for the upcoming tour. What he wasn't expecting was the affect the lead singer would have on him. He feels a connection to Ruby he has never experienced before and that is not necessarily a good thing. It's clear she is suffering from her own demons, caught up in an abusive relationship and the last thing Jem needs in his new sober life. He knows he can't try to fix her and helping her will lead him down a path he is not stable enough to handle... but he can't stay away. Can these two broken souls be just what the other needs to heal, or will they end up damaging each other beyond repair? When Jem's past comes back to haunt him in the worst way possible, Ruby decides that maybe she could be the support he needs for once, but Jem can't let anyone get that close to him again, it ALWAYS ends in disaster.

Tears spring into my eyes, at Jem's life, at the way he's been manipulated, at what he has to fight along with his demons every day. He wants to change, but the world wants to keep him demonized.

I can admit I was a little nervous to read this book. I have been following this series since the beginning and I have NEVER been a fan of Jem's. It was clear the guy was suffering from some issues, but he came across as nothing more than a drug addicted, always drunk, ass and frankly the guy scared me. I should have know Lisa would never disappoint me. I NEVER expected to fall for Jem and I certainly never expected to feel for him, but the man wormed his way under my skin. His past was responsible for the man we met in 'Summer Sky' and while I might not agree with the direction he took in his life, I at least understand it a helluva lot more than I did. I judged the man and I was put in my place. I now feel bad that he is actually trying to turn his life around but the media just won't let him-they are just waiting for him to fail again and the way he lets this get to him is just heartbreaking. Ruby was also a cause of deep sorrow for me, this girl has suffered unbelievable abuse of all kinds her entire life but she refuses to let in break her-even if it caused some serious damage and forced her to erect a HUGE wall around her heart. These two can't seem to be in the same room for more than five minutes without it turning into a brawl and honestly it became exhausting. I just wanted them to find some peace but the uphill battle appeared to be endless. Out of all the books in this series, this one brought the heaviest emotions outta me. There are some scenes that were difficult to get through and may be a trigger for some people but ultimately it was well worth the read and a fantastic addition to the series. We get to spend a little bit of time with Dylan, Liam, and their ladies, but Jem's go to guy when things get really hard was Bryn so we get to know him a little better-this also seems to set up his book which should be interesting to say the least. Once again, Lisa Swallow has proven why she will always hold a spot on my One-Click-Addiction List. This woman has a way of stealing my sanity that few others can achieve. Her character's and stories drive me bat-shit crazy, pisses me off, turn me on, make me giggle, break me and heal me all in a matter of a few hundred pages-and I love every damn minute of it. Cannot wait to see what this series brings us next.

I crave her more than anything in my life before, her presence a blinding light pouring into the shadows I'm surrounded by. I need her to stay, to never take her radiance away or leave me lost in the dark again.

I absolutely love reading these books. We get to go on another love adventure with a memeber from Blue Phoenix. Jem and Rubys story is one you won't want to miss. We get to watch them help each other overcome troubled pasts. Need more.

One click this rock star. Jem Is the lead guitar for Blue Phoenix . Ruby is the lead singer of Ruby Riot. There was a combustible energy between the two of them. It seams all Jem has seen abuse and drug addiction and is fighting his demon . Ruby is being abused and is fighting demons of her own . This was a great read , I laughed , cried , yelled and smiled

This book was fantastic two people mirrored and can either harm or help each other. Both have a past that's similar and both have more obstacles than usual but the question is can they make it before their lies to themselfs and each other get in the way.

Check out more of my reviews on my blog http://gemmareadstoomuch.co.uk

Rising is book #4 in the blue Phoenix series, I’ve somehow managed to mix up the books in this series and I’ve read Jem’s book out of order. I can truthfully say that this is a real standalone, because even having missed out Liam’s book I still managed to follow this book no probs.

I remember reading Summer Sky and really disliking Jem. I found him creepy and he kind of made my skin crawl. He redeemed himself a bit in falling sky but I think that’s because I felt sorry for him.

I’m gonna say it now I LOVED this book!!!! And I am now totally #teamJem!!!

Lisa Swallow has managed to tap into the deep emotional turmoil that Jem feels and within the first chapter I was completely smitten by all things Jem Jones!!!

Usually when characters are dark and brooding they are paired with little miss sunshine in a hope that their cheer and optimism will somehow rub off on them.

I adored the fact that Lisa Swallow does the exact opposite. Ruby is real and hurt and damaged. Her soul echoes Jem’s in that they are both broken beyond belief.

The saying opposites attract is true, but sometimes your soul mate is someone so alike you that they can understand the darkness and hurt that lives within. Ruby is the type of character that makes you want to stand up and fight for her!!!! I can’t relate to her but I did feel a sense of protectiveness for both her and Jem!!! My mom instincts came out full force with both of their characters!!!

This poor couple are fighting an uphill battle to be together but I honestly never ever doubted for a second that they were destined to be together.

It didn’t matter to me that their relationship boarded on unhealthy I love them together!!!

Dan needs to be castrated!!! What a cock!!!

This book dragged me under and that why I’m writing this review at 2.54am just one more chapter became just till I get to a boring bit!!! I could not put this book down!!!

I loved Dylan but now its move over Dylan Jem’s in town!!!

Rising gets 5 stars from me!!!

Rising (Blue Phoenix #4) by Lisa Swallow

Again, another fantastic book, couldn't put it down ...

Rising is the fourth book in the Blue Phoenix series by Lisa Swallow and follow on from Summer Sky, Falling Sky and Unplugged.

This is a spin-off book from the original series and is about another Blue Phoenix band member Jem Jones, the guitarist and all round troubled, bad boy. I absolutely loved this book from the very first page and that love continued through until the final page was turned. But more than that, I want more. More about the band members which I know is coming, but stories about spin-off characters would be great too. Lisa's storytelling is fantastic and it grabs you and doesn't want to let you go.

The star of this book is Jem Jones, the lead guitarist of the very successful rock band Blue Phoenix. But, there is another star in this book and it's in the form of a very cool rock chick whose name is Ruby. Ruby is the lead singer in the band Ruby Riot (hence the need for more books, hint Lisa). Ruby seems to have two personalities, one she shows to the world and one she hides from the world. I won't go into too much detail because it will spoil the plotline, but I loved the way this book went and how very similar Jem and Ruby are in some ways.

Ruby and Jem's musical passion takes on new heights as they both share a similar way of making their music. Their love of music is shared and they form a close bond through their music and their struggles. Of course, it would be a great book if there were not trials and tribulations for the pair of them. Even though Jem is a tough rock star he also has a vulnerable side and Ruby is his trigger and his saviour.

I loved this analogy:
“.. sun shining through the broken glass of my world, casting light across the darkness and creating rainbows.”
I love that his broken life is filled with so much colour.

I received this as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review...but who am I kidding? I'd intended to buy it on release day anyway. Ms Swallow is good and her Blue Phoenix boys are better. Not to mention their no-nonsense leading ladies.

I knew this one would be difficult to read, as it's Jem's story. Unlike the other Blue Phoenix boys, he's the typical rockstar you'd expect to find in a book: multiple stints in rehab after no end of trouble with alcohol and drugs. Add the troubled past that he's trying to numb with any substance under the sun and you have Jem Jones. He's done some messed-up things while under the influence in the previous books, so I won't detail those here, so I honestly wasn't sure if I could even like this bloke, let alone sympathise with him.

Enter Ms Swallow and her talent for not only making a character believable, but for dragging you so deeply into his soul that you can't help but share his emotions. Or, in Jem's case, his soul-churning conflict as he tries to fence in his feelings.

Ruby's hardly a red-haired angel. She has her own issues - not so much a troubled past as an abusive present, though her past is hardly rosy. There's a reason Ruby isn't even her real name. Because of Ruby, I read a large part of this book with my heart in my throat. The danger is so real and Jem has already lost one girl in the past, it's not so much a case of whether this couple ever get together, it's whether they'll survive long enough to do so.

A masterpiece of complex characters, soul-wrenching emotion and a tale of hope as you wonder...can Jem Jones rise from the Hell that's all he's ever known?

I LOVE the Blue Phoenix series so much so I couldn't wait for Jem's story in Rising. Once again, Lisa Swallow did not disappoint!

"Our demons don't want to play but they sure as hell recognise each other" This line sums up the book so well! We first met Jem in Summer Sky and I'm going to be honest, didn't like him at all. Those feelings didn't change in Falling Sky. By the time Unplugged rolled around, he was starting to grow on me. After reading Rising, I fell in LOVE with Jem.

After failing at several attempts to stay clean leaving rehab, Jem is bound and determined to succeed this time no matter what. He decided to throw himself into the one addiction that is safe, music, and that's where he discovers Ruby Riot. Ruby throws herself into music to break the cycle of abuse she has endured since childhood. When these two meet, there are sparks that set off more sparks. Can Ruby and Jem get rid of their demons and love each other 100%?

The biggest thing I LOVE about this book is that it's a second chance book. The story has to do with real life issues for so many people and it gives hope that a person can shake off their demons and still succeed. Lisa's writing is so amazing that I felt every emotion personally that Jem and Ruby had. I literally cried for both of them several times. Rising is a beautiful emotionally charged story of love, redemption, and second chances! The Blue Phoenix series is one of my very favorite and I will continue to wait impatiently for the next book! Please please check out this series as you will be hooked as I am!

After reading the first couple of Blue Pheonix books, it's very easy to dislike Jem Jones; I absolutely hated him in Summer Sky and the majority of Falling Sky. We caught a small glimpse of a sober Jem in Unplugged and now we get to find out how he has pulled himself his addictions. Of course, Jem being Jem, there are times when I wanted to slap him, but there was an understanding of why he chose to do certain things, no matter how frustrating.
Initially I wasn't really sure how I felt about Ruby, but the more I read, the more I began to understand her and really like her. Like Jem she's extremely complex and it becomes apparently that they do In fact complete each other.
The Ruby Riot band members are another reason to love this book and I can't wait to find out more about them. Jax is a very intriguing character and the brothers, Will and Nate, are a bundle of fun energy. They're very deserving of a spinoff series.
What I love most, was the shear amount of feels you get while reading this. Curiosity, frustration, anger, contentment, pity, a bit more frustration, sorrow, and joy are all emotions I felt. Being a slow burn story, you feel the URST just as much as Jem and Ruby. I knew I was onto a winner when I got my first tingles after reading just one chapter. All it took was Ruby saying 'I was lying by the way.' I have no doubt there will be a lot more Jem Jones lovers after reading this.

I came across Lisa Swallow & her Blue Phoenix series quite by happy accident during an author takeover on Facebook.
HOW HAD I NOT HEARD OF THIS SERIES BEFORE??
Without hesitation I can say that within the first few chapters of Summer Sky (Blue Phoenix #1) I was hooked! I managed to smash my way through the series as fast as I had time to read.
Dylan & Sky's story was passionate; turbulent in the most beautiful way.
Liam & Cerys' story was beautiful, sweet & made me love Liam even more than Dylan.
And then, there is Jem.
Through the first 3 Blue Phoenix stories, he does not endear.
Jem appeared rude, selfish, self-destructive and not an amazing friend.
I will say, Jem was not my favourite character... until Rising.
I'm a sucker for the damaged men & women in literature. The broken souls. Hearts damaged from past transgressions against them.
Jem and Ruby both embody the definition of broken from their individual pasts.
Rising was a tougher read than the previous books in this series, but I feel it was much more rewarding. The battles they wage within themselves, and in that helping each other work through them are not smooth, but worth the painful journey.
Your heart will wrench, tear & quite possibly break while reading Jem & Rubys emotional story.
Rising was a beautiful read that I would absolutely recommend to you - after you read the Blue Phoenix books 1-3!
This is an amazing series from a truly wonderful, sweet author who tells a beautiful story.

Rising is book Four in the Blue Phoenix series. Rising is Jem's story. I have read all the previous Blue Phoenix books and couldn't wait for Jem's story. When I first met Jem's character on Summer Sky, I didn't like him very much. In Falling Sky, he grew on me and I began to like him. I liked his character some much that when I got Unplugged to read, I was a little disappointed it's wasn't Jem's story. I really expected Jem to have a great story to tell his book and I was not disappointed.

Jem's is a little rough then the rest of his band mates. He has a had a troubled past and uses alcohol and drugs to numb himself. He comes off as a typical bad boy rockstar but there is a lot more to Jem. Ruby is breaking into the music scene. She's had an abusive relationship and has her own set of issue. They both have their struggles. Jem and Ruby's story in so well written that you can't help up root for then to get some happiness.

Rising is worth one clicking. It won't disappoint you.

Going into this book I knew Ruby and Jem's story would be more emotional than the others, but Jem still had those naughty qualities that I like so much, "are you asking me if I want to eff you?" He also can be a romantic boy, in his own emotionally deranged way, "you have no idea how long I've wanted this," he says hoarsely. "I'm not effing it up and then you never want sex with me again because that would kill me." Ruby is an emotional mess from her previous relationship which makes her kind of jealous at times, I mean Jem he's known for his playboy ways so I totally get where she's coming from, "you smell of her! You effing bas****! Why bring me be here at all if you were going to spend the evening with your eff buddy!" Watching them both go through ups and downs was heartbreaking at times but it's their story and it was unique and I liked it.

Another fantastic installment in the Blue Phoenix series! Seriously, if you haven't read these books yet, I don't know what you're waiting for.

I loved Jem (even though he doesn't have Dylan's skills in the bacon sandwich department!) as he is my favourite type of book boyfriend: angst-ridden but hot as Hell. I also loved Ruby, with her believable mix of sass and vulnerability. Together, they make a great couple who have to work hard to lay their respective demons to rest.

As always, Lisa Swallow has captured the headiness of falling in love and the emotional upheaval of trying to meld two lives together. The occasional appearances of the other band members doesn't overbear the storyline, allowing Jem and Ruby to live their own tale.

I can't wait for the next Blue Phoenix book...please let it be Bryn!

Rising finally tells Jems story in the amazing series The Blue Phoenix series. In the previous books, Jem has been spiraling and this story begins after he hits his rock bottom. Having been both a witness and a victim of abuse and neglect, Jem is determined to make his life better. While taking a break from Blue Phoenix, his manager suggest being a talent scout. This takes him to a small venue to see the up and coming Ruby Riot perform. Jem not only finds a band worthy to support, but finds himself intrigued with the lead singer Ruby.

Ruby is not only trying to make it as a musician, but a way out from an abusive situation as well. After an altercation with her possessive ex, Ruby finds herself with no where safe to turn. She has a strong head on her shoulders and is determined to survive.

This is an incredible story and well worth the read. I cannot wait for more Blue Phoenix!

Heartachingly beautiful ❤!!!

I've been waiting for Jem's story 😉. Oh it was so worth the wait....crafted expertly, with a story of two characters that have endured so much pain in life. Fractured souls looking to glue their hearts and beings back together. Can they finally find themselves and become whole, let alone be enough to even attempt looking into a possible spark? Take this emotional ride and see what happens. It's filled with a full range of emotions along the way so prepare now...but something worth having one often must walk through the flames. These two most certainly have done that and then some in this awesome read! So grab a ticket and get ready for the show folks 😉❤.

I really loved this series. Jem was a difficult one to get through and even though it takes place when he's sober he's still a mess emotionally when Ruby comes into his life. She's held into an abusive relationship but has been developing plans to leave.

Ruby and her band are talented. They are going places. Band mate, Jax is her closest friend. I really liked Ruby for her strength. It seemed Jem needed a strong person who wouldn't judge him. Ruby was stronger but together two broken people meant for each other was the right thing.

The book I wasn’t going to read

Honestly I wasn’t gonna read this book because I didn’t like who Jim Jones was in the earlier books. Didn’t want to read a drug attic‘s recovery. I have family members went through that.
But I’m glad to say that I did read it and I did like it. It was past his rehab and going through struggles with it. He Ruby find a way to deal with their own problems and then come together and support each other.

The characters and story were unbelievably good. Its a real fragile story with lots of grit. I loved it. I adored Ruby, so much. The ending was great. My favourite so far. I really loved it.

However this is a re-released book and its full of errors. The author must have re-read it surely and spotted the errors? How could she not. None of this is a problem with British English as I am British. Its just typos. That's poor

5 stars!

Just when I thought I could only have enough love for Dylan ... Jem came and redeemed himself in the realest and rawest of ways. He was so human and so relatable. I had nothing but empathy and hope for sobriety.
