After not enjoying the first book in this series I am happy to say that I really enjoyed this one more! First of all, Jason is the most loving, patient and kind man. He won me over. Zach was ok too but he really screwed with Jason. I don’t understand why he ghosted Jason , it still didn’t feel right for the story. Even with the PTSD it was just an abrupt way to end part one.

I usually dislike books that have a “then” with the characters in school and then the “now” but the high school part was more enjoyable to me. The “now” part went off the rails a bit with the Sean storyline. The last part dragged and I wanted more of the couple and not another family’s issues.

The sisters of both characters are such great characters, especially Drea! The town is a bit too perfect but it’s ok, I liked the story enough I could overlook that.

Thank you to GRR and the author for an advanced copy

The excitement was real for Jason and Zach after reading Something Good. This is book two in the Once and Always series. In Roots Run Deep we have Jason and Zach who ultimately are destined to be together. The bond they form in such a short period of time really show you how deep a connection with someone can be.

Yes these boys go through it. Sweet baby Zach. Let me tell you how much he frustrated me and left me asking so many questions. Of course we had our time jump and now Zach is back and trying to make amends with Jason after several years.

I won’t share too much because this is one you should read to see how it all unfolds. Melody does a wonderful job making this real authentic.

The Once and Always series has truly captivated me, and this second installment has exceeded my expectations. Melody's masterful portrayal of emotions and her distinctive writing style have been my favorite. This story expertly weaves together all the essential elements, rendering me utterly enthralled.

We were introduced to Jason in the previous book as Will's best friend, with hints of his complex past with Zach. This narrative delves deeper, exploring their beautiful friendship, tender moments, and heart-wrenching tragedy. The "Once" segment beautifully captures their blossoming connection, while the "Always" part is an emotional rollercoaster.

Zach's determination to reunite with Jason is palpable, but he must confront his own trauma. Jason's character shines in the "Always" part, as he assertively demands answers about their past while still harboring undeniable love for Zach. Zach's growth is remarkable, as he prioritizes healing and takes bold steps towards redemption.

This story excels at evoking raw emotions, forging a deep connection with the characters' struggles. The sweet and intimate moments are expertly crafted, making this book an amazing read. I am eagerly looking forward to Jimmy's book.

One is preparing for EMT training, and the other for a UCLA full scholarship.

Zach loved soccer, only not the pressure of his demanding, never-content dad, it took all the fun away.

They are new in town, and already loved at the high school. His friendship with Jason meant everything to him.

Jason was born and raised in Astaire. He is smitten by Zach, the guy who’s new in town. They developed a great friendship and even more.

They made plans and got really close to each other, Zach would go to college but they would do a long-distance relationship.

The story is in two parts. I knew what would happen, the blurb says Zach left.

So I was a bit (too much) focused to get to that point. It took 50% to get there, half of it I ran through like a crazy person. Then, I got where I wanted to be.

Zach is weighted down by guilt, he was quiet for nine years, and now he’s back.

It’s a full, rich story, there’s a lot to read, and all thoroughly developed! The mental health struggles were quite palpable! The whole writing process was great and quite captivating. The characters were kind, sweet, vulnerable, and had been through a lot. Together they were so good.

Zach and Jason's romance is an emotional friends to lovers story with a second chance second half of the book. I like how the story has been split so that we have when the two boys become friends and discover new aspects to themselves that bring them together. Then we have Zach coming back to town ten years later hoping for a reconciliation of some kind.
I really liked the development of the relationship between Zach and Jason. Nothing is rushed, time is taken to understand their own feelings and attraction. At first, drama comes within the family but extreme events lead to an extreme reaction and part two of the book then unfolds. Jason's sexuality is a wonderful thing to read, purely from the viewpoint of someone on the Ace spectrum reading the fluidity of it and being accepting of discovering a new aspect of yourself, evolving with that.
There are a couple of tough topics dealt with in this book, including anxiety, PTSD, and grief. I think it's well written, and there is positivity around mental health and therapy.
There are strong siblings relationships for both men with each of their sisters, though Zach's sister, Drea, talks more of a leading role, even becoming close to Jason.
Overall, I loved this story and how the writing unfolds, the characters and their relationship grows with the highs and lows both men experience. Another recommended read for this author and I'm looking forward to the final book of the series.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Jason and Zach get to know each other and develop feelings the summer after their senior year in high school. Zach is a soccer star and the life of the party, but it’s all surface level. He lost his mom, has a difficult relationship with his father and feels like he needs to take care of his younger sister. He meets Jason and the two of them are immediately drawn to each other. However, a tragedy occurs and Zach makes choices that fractures their bond. Years later, they find they are still drawn to each other.

This book is about two boys turned men who are trying to get a second chance at love while battling their own mental health issues. The author expertly tells a story of dealing with loss and PTSD. Zach makes a choice that should be infuriating. But the author shows how his mental health led him there. While Jason doesn’t just automatically get over it, he’s loving and understanding.

Despite these issues, these two boys communicate well. The author could have taken the misunderstanding route, but doesn’t. Their first kiss is one of the sweetest first kisses I’ve ever read.

I also enjoyed the demisexuality rep. It felt very real with Jason. Zach’s patience with him was so sweet.

I loved the glimpse of Sammy and Will.

A very enjoyable, angsty read from Melody Claire.

Another beautiful story from Melody Claire. Zack and Jason had me all the way in my feels, and I am so not mad about it. This book was stunning. It had all the angst and a little pining and plenty of discovery, and I felt like I was on the journey with Zack and Jason throughout the book.

The story is so well written, and all of the different elements blended together to create an amazing story. There are some really hard-hitting topics in this book, but each one is written sensitively and with understanding.

Jason and Zacks' relationship felt so natural from the beginning, and I think this is because of the connection they developed before they became more.

I love seeing glimpses of other characters from previous and future books, and I can't wait for more from this series.

4.5 stars. A very touching second chance romance with excellent demi representation. I particularly liked seeing the slowly growing bind between them, which sparked Jason's sexuality into more. There was much struggling with mental health, particularly for Zach, who suffered so much from undiagnosed issues. This was written with great sensitivity. Jason was a beautiful support in everything, even when he didn't understand what was behind the hurtful actions, which led to their long separation.

I struggled with the beginning of the story, idk it felt too slow for me.

But I really enjoyed the second part, they never stopped loving each other and that was beautiful.

I cried over Sean's story, he was so sweet 😭 I was so mad with Sarah but at the same time, I understood her, she did everything for her kids, and Sean was also hers.

**** ARC review****

I received this as an ARC review and I loved it.
Very same pace as with Something Good (Sammy and Will) but with more mental health representation.

It was a bit long winded in the beginning with the backstory but is a nice touch if you didn’t read Something Good.

Jason and Zach came around full circle from being teens and falling in love to working through heartbreak, guilt, anxiety, etc. I really enjoyed Sean and his history and how he helped Zach get to a better place - not only for himself but for Jason as well.

ARC REVIEW

Book 2 in the Once and Always series we follow Jason and Zach who we both get hints of in “Something Good”

I truly cannot express how amazing this book is. I loved “Something Good” so I knew this one would deliver as well!

In this emotional second chance friends to lovers (one could even say idiots in love as well) story you see Zach and Jason develop feelings for each other but they both aren’t sure if the other reciprocates and as time passes, feelings get deeper until they surface and when they fall, they fall hard! It’s a story about love, self discovery, second chances; with mental health rep, demisexuality rep, and a roller coaster of emotions!

I cannot express enough how much I love this book. I loved Zach and Jason’s journey and relationship throughout the book, I connected with both in different ways and it’s just such a beautiful story. Melody hits every mark and if you loved “Something Good” you’ll definitely love this one!

I loved Something Good, book 1 of the Once and Always series, and I can honestly say that book 2, Roots Run Deep, is worth every tear.

Melody has done it again, she has written a wonderful, heartbreaking second chance romance where friends become lovers.

In this book we follow Jason and Zach, two characters we already met in the previous book. We see them fall in love as young men, break up, and get back together after nine years. Both are now mature and grown up, but they still struggle with life's problems. The love they felt for each other is still there, but after the pain and suffering they felt over the past few years, it's not easy to go back to where they left off.

I liked how this book tackled mental health and how self-love and self-care are a very important part of a healthy life and relationship.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

4.5 stars - I have been thinking about this rating for a while. This book is structured similarly to the first one: we get a 50% time jump forward, second chance at love after nearly a decade of radio silence. I was actually a little apprehensive to read it so quickly after the first, but I was intrigued about the characters we got a glimpse of in the first book, AND was curious about the demisexual rep.

My experience with this book was very different, despite the similarities in structure. And I'm actually going to factor the author's note into my rating (a tiny bit), because reading it after finishing this really did make me think about how it was put together.

I found myself holding my breath up until the middle point of this book, because I couldn't see how they wouldn't find a way to keep in touch and make long distance work. The second part of the book starts off with much more of a bang, so the pacing in the second half really didn't change for me.

This book is also much longer than the first; I think over a hundred pages longer, and I'm not usually looking for romance novels to be around the 500 page mark. But this book earned its length for me. Even saying that, I don't know if I can give this book as a blanket recommendation. I don't think it will work for everyone, and I think some people won't have the patience to stick it out (which is fine, not every book is for everyone.)

I did think about other books with demisexual rep and this one worked quite well for me (as someone who identifies as demi). Jason isn't desperately trying to prove that he's 'just like his friends' and has a sex drive; he accepts that maybe he's ace and will never feel that type of attraction. Then he slowly gets to know Zach and is genuinely bewildered when he does make a connection to sexual attraction to his new best friend.

Jason is just such a thoroughly decent and good person; he almost seems like he's too pure for this world, except that he

Jason is confused about why Zach never got back in touch with him, and isn't sure he wants to give him a chance to explain himself. But when he does, he finds that Zach can't explain it, either. Which is understandably infuriating, until we look back at how Zach has previously handled (or not handled) trauma in the past. The

And, instead of groveling, we get scene after scene showing us that Zach is a good guy. Someone who cares, and maybe always has, but has been truly blocked from doing anything about it by some big traumas in his past. But that he reached a point where he had to stop running and try to face what he was avoiding, even it didn't turn out the way he wanted.

Jason never felt that type of connection with anyone in the almost 10 years since Zach left, and he is rightly scared that he'll rekindle his feelings and Zach will ghost him again. But by the end of the book, neither Jason nor the reader is worried about that anymore. You know they'll talk; you know they'll never get to that point again, because he's finally getting treatment for what he didn't realize he needed help with.

In the author's note, Claire shares that she painted herself into a corner with the mentions she made about Jason and Zach in the first book. But she took time and care to figure out why and how these two could break and come back together.

There's a huge subplot about Zach connecting with a young kid from his soccer camp who lost his mom in a tragic accident right before the summer . . . I liked having this mirror Zach his losing his own mom suddenly and it lent the third act an external conflict that I found satisfying and realistic to these characters. Zach couldn't leave Jason again and have anyone still be on his side, but they can work together to try and help a kid and his aunt and her family.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one felt more personal to me, and I appreciated the care that was taken.

'I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder that I’d been so lucky. Not just that he’d given me a second chance, but that he loved me so deeply, despite everything that had happened.'

Get ready for an emotional journey as we go back to Astaire, Nebraska in Melody Claire's Roots Run Deep, book 2 of the Once and Always series.

Set along the same timeline as book 1, this time it's Jason's story, which I've been looking forward to since we met him in Something Good.

Jason had thought he was ace, but as we get to know him, we see him begin a friendship and eventually fall head over heels in love with soccer player, Zach Jacobs during their summer after high school, not only discovering his demisexuality, but finding the love of his life.

Zach is a complex character. He's been through a lot losing his mom, he's kind-hearted, a fabulous brother, etc. but this is a second chance romance, and there is quite a time gap for these guys since we're following the Something Good timeline.

These guys are apart almost ten years. And it's the separation, particularly the manner of it, which made the fondness I had for Zach become complicated. On one hand, I can see what a good man he is; on the other, I couldn't forgive his treatment of Jason. He ghosted the guy he apparently loved, and sadly, his reasoning, as much as I sympathise with his mental health struggles, I can't understand how he could do such a thing.

But putting those feelings aside, I loved the relationship development between Jason and Zach upon their reunion. And Melody Claire managed to show what a good man Zach had become, especially with his connection to Sean, Sarah, and their family.

His mental illness plight also pulled at the heartstrings, and Jason's support and unwavering love and loyalty were beautiful.

“We lost so much time because of what I did. Because of how I hurt you. Jesus, because of how I hurt myself.”
“Stop, honey. You’re getting worked up over something you had no control over...
What happened in the past doesn’t change the fact that I love you now.”

I absolutely adore Jason. This man is the sweetest, most forgiving guy. Family and helping people come first to Jason, and he thoroughly deserves all the happiness and love he finds with Zach.

These two didn’t have an easy road, but following their journey was worth it. And whilst Zach may never be my favourite character, I was happy to see them get their happily ever after.

It was also fun to catch up with characters from book 1, particularly Will and Sammy. Whilst Zach's sister, Drea, was a fantastic addition to the story. And I really can't wait to see what Jimmy's story has in store for us in the next instalment of the series!

If you love an emotional second chance romance, then don't miss Roots Run Deep, which is out now!

“I’m pretty sure we were always going to end up here.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”

This was a very good seond chance love story.
Jason and Zach are sweet and amazing and they're perfect for each other, we met them in Something Good and finally they got their HEA.
I adored the first part of the story, Once: how they built their friendship, how they become close, how they felt at ease with each other, their routine of running together, of talking and listening. I adored that there was absolutely no miscommunication between them, especially when they started developing feelings.

I particularly appreciated how the author handled Jason's demisexuality, by not making him suddenly attracted to Zach, but giving him the time he needed to get close to him. I also like that the spice level of this book is low and that it's more focused on the emotional part of their relationship.

The second part, Always, was unexpected: I'm not going to lie, Jason's text made me cry ugly tears, he did not deserved to be treated like that and I had a hard time sympathising with Zach

What prevented me from giving a higher rate:
Zach's motivations were hard to understand, I couldn't really get why, after losing her mother, he wanted to push away other members of his family too, but mental health problems are complicated and Zach was clearly suffering a lot. I actually like how the author described his feelings and his emotions.

What I didn't like was that it took him years to make the decision to mend things with jason: he was a scared teenager when all went wrong and he didn't have the mental strenght to do anything about it, but later he was an adult, a successful athlete who had all the resources to try to get better and he didn't do that.
It took him too long to go into therapy I'm also not very fond of the fact that he tried to have serious relationships with other people during all those years, instead of reaching out to the only one he loved).
In my opinion starting a serious relationship without having had therapy first wasn't the best choice: Jason was an amazing man but I believe he gave Zach a second chance too soon.

I loved Zach's relationship with Sean, he was a strong presence in that boy's life and he helped him a lot (I really really liked their conversation about loss).

I appreciated very much that this story was basically developed in the same timeline of the events of the first book, because this way I could clearly remember better what happened in Something Good, without rereading it first. Moreover, it was good to see Sammy and Will again.

I really look forward to read Jimmy's story, I really need a happy ending for him too.
Very recommended

I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review.

What a journey.
This is my first book by Melody Claire, and it was book 2 of a series. I did not feel put off or lost from having not reading book 1. The characters from that one were in this book so there may be spoilers for them if you haven’t read it, but it was not a bother for me. This is Zach and Jason’s second chance story. Zach has only been in town 1-2 years after losing his mom, whereas Jason has lived there his whole life. This is the story of their friendship turned romance and everything else along the way.

Neither of the boys think they are anything but straight at first, but we slowly learn this is not the case. I really liked how the author handled these discoveries for both characters, and that it didn’t happen right away for them. The development was lovely to witness. I thoroughly enjoyed how the friendship was established on page prior to the romance evolving. It helped the romance feel more natural. To see how the feelings developed in correlation to their realizations about their sexualities was great.

There is a lot of time that passes in this book, but nothing ever felt like it was too drawn out or rushed. I also loved that Sean’s involvement in the story wasn’t just brushed over, but that his story was weaved into our MC’s story. This was a longer book, but nothing felt “extra” or like filler material. I did not find myself skimming. I also love books with time gaps in them. (Give me that angst pls)

Mental health was a huge part of Zach’s character development. Honestly, I was angry with him by the time I flipped the page to Part II. I was frustrated and needed to take a breather. From there I was totally on Jason’s side with being upset with Zach and I didn’t think I’d grow to forgive him like I felt Jason was going to. However, the struggles that Zach went through before meeting Jason were never addressed, and that caused some issues for Zach that needed to be resolved. I loved how the author tackled this. The things we go through can stay with us and end up taking over part of our lives if we don’t take care of them. I liked how this wasn’t just “and then I got over it in therapy”, but rather a little by little process that is written into the latter portion of the book. I ended up rooting for Zach and was happy to see his progress by the end of it.

What an emotional roller coaster. From experiencing love for the first time, it not being exactly what you thought it would be, to self discoveries and hope for the future. I will definitely be returning to Ms. Claire’s works. I received an ARC of this book and this was my honest review.

Jason and Zach are a sweet slow burn couple who meet as teens and slowly fall into soul deep love. Both have experienced tragedy, but when Zach faces a fresh trauma, he is unable to cope with it and ends up pulling away from Jason.

I struggled a bit with the reason for Zach leaving Jason. The way he did it felt more extreme than was reasonably explained by his trauma, although the author did a good job of showing us how fragile Zach was. But I still struggled to buy fully into the length of time it took before he tries to make things right with Jason, and I wanted to see him work a little harder to make up for it. I appreciate the author writes forgiving and flawed characters, as it makes them more relatable and real, but in this case, I personally didn't feel like Zach had a good enough reason for how he broke things off with Jason and I really struggled with how selfish and needlessly cruel he was.

The reunion was as emotional and powerful as I wanted. As with Something Good, it doesn't really take the characters long to get together. Jason makes him work for it at first, but once he decides to let Zach back in, he's all in with him again. There's a few weeks of tension and then hesitant friendship, but in terms of number of pages, it doesn't take long before they recommit to each other.

After that, the plot went a direction I didn't expect, focusing more on Zach's support of a player he coaches. I think the author did it to give Jason (and us) proof of how Zach has changed, but I struggled with it. I sympathized with the mom/aunt and felt Zach was vastly overstepping, which didn't endear him to me. I would have really preferred more focus on his relationship with Jason.

The first part of the book was so powerful and beautiful that I still give it 4 stars. Melody Claire's prose is some of the best in the business, in my opinion, showing a level of sophistication and mastery of language that elevates her books from many in the genre. She excels at writing emotional romances that make you really go through it with her characters and I'm a huge fan of that. Although the post get together didn't pull me in as much as the buildup, I still enjoyed Jason and Zach's HEA and definitely recommend it. I look forward to the next book in the series!

"I'd once thought my feeling for Jason had roots so deep it'd take a hurricane to rip them out. Later, I'd convinced myself that idea had been the fantasy of a 19 year old, longing for someone to simply see him."

This is the second book in the Once and Always series by Melody Claire and I can honestly say, I spent this book crying, laughing and screaming at my kindle. Can you get really made at fictional characters that someone else writes because they do things that you don't like, because you can see that they are not DOING WHAT THEY SHOULD!!! Well here I am to tell you, that is what I was doing with this book.

This book is the story of Jason and Zach. Zach moves to Alstair just before their senior year and is mr popular, homecoming king, captain of the soccer team, dates the senators daughter. Jason has lived here his whole life, plays football and baseball, plans to be a EMT, and believes himself to be asexual as he has never felt sexual attraction to anyone. The summer after graduation, they become friends and start spending time running together. Zach finds himself telling Jason things he has never told anyone else. Oh, and their sisters are best friends. They continue this friendship as Zach leaves for college in a texting everyday kind of way, and other people point out that these two are possibly more?? But when tragedy strikes it rips them apart.

Years pass, and what happens when you realize where you left your heart? Its time for Zach to go home. This book was broken into two parts, I highly suggest you read book one, you will get Sammy and Will's story and you will also get some of that in this book as it takes place at the same time. I absolutely loved this one. The representation of different sexualities was handled with such amazing truth and grace.

"It's time to let it go. We can't move forward if we're still living in the past."
I closed my eyes, blowing out a shakey breath. "I'm scared," I admitted.

Some relationships are meant to be, even after a 9-year unexplained gap initiated by one partner
Given the blurb on the plot of this book, it was difficult to imagine a romance that rebloomed after someone had ghosted his intense love interest 9 years ago. But Melody Claire sets us up with a joyous blooming of a romance that quickly developed in the summer before soccer star Zack left for college. So intense is this experience that both Zack and Jason’s sisters see it for what could be well before the boys do.

But after a tragic event lures Zack back to his hometown where the sisters have been involved in a horrible accident. For Jason, the accident is the first day he’s allowed on the working crew for his Emergency Medical Technician work and his panic at realizing the sisters are hurt sends him into a frenzy requiring others restrain him.

It’s Jason's incredible caring for others, a sense of a wiser than his age young man whose inspiration for a career of service has benefits in settling Zack who has been suffering from the loss of his mother in a car accident.

Ms. Claire wastes no dialogue developing this richly rewarding and comforting relationship into something that might otherwise been seen as being followed by a Happy Ever After. The ghosting chapter is extraordinarily handled and with a narrative by Jason nine years later, we see the strong impact the two had together, but was never fulfilled.

That comes in a wonderfully crafted return of the now retired soccer star, and a careful development of coming to restore that former relationship. That telling is powerfully conveyed in cautious optimism, family warnings about hurting each other again, and the lure of a small town and scenery we can visualize through Ms. Clare’s writing.

This book does have a happy ending, a powerful testimony of being willing to listen to each other and sincere caring.

I’ll be on to the next book in this series.

I did receive an advance read copy of this book, but the review is solely my work.

Honestly, if the author was going to abandon literally everything that happened in the first part, they should've split this up into two books. It's definitely long enough. At least I would've had a decent conclusion for half.

The first part of the book was good. Seeing Zach and Jason evolve from friends to lovers was about as standard as can be (and that's not a bad thing)

I feel like their first meeting was a bit too familiar (I mean Zach just started opening up to a stranger) but I can chalk that up to being emotionally overwhelmed.

Everything leading up to their sisters' accident was pretty standard slow burn and was decently paced. The hospital scenes were alright, if a little too slow. Too much detail and too many days, but at least Zach and Jason's relationship evolved.

I thought Drea was going to end up dying, but when she didn't I quickly realized that only random conjured BS was going to separate Zach and Jason.

The very very very abrupt end of the relationship was like a slap in the face. Like what the hell? Zach just ghosts Jason then we skip to 9 years later? Came out of legit nowhere and just felt so contrived.

The way the second half just suddenly ends the relationship felt like it just disrespected your time and investment into the story.

Then we don't even get a clear reason why Zach did it (if you're going to pull this shit, there better be a good reason and it better come quick) or why Jason hadn't moved on.

I literally just hated Zach's guts and since we didn't get his reasoning early, I couldn't stand reading his parts. But to be honest, anything short of being abducted and held against his will, I cannot be sympathetic to a character that ghosted someone for 9 years then expects to get back together. No amount of grovel will make that alright, especially since he apparently had been in relationships post-Jason.

TL;DR Just read the first half then stop. Save yourself the time and move on afterwards.

Melody Claire has this uncanny way of making readers feel so many emotions when taking a journey with her characters. This story was no different. She brought real issues to the forefront in Roots Run Deep and gave the reader a very real look at how mental health issues can play a role in the decisions we make. Roots Run Deep is a friends-to-lovers story with a lot of heart and gives readers the ability to connect with the characters on so many different levels.

Jason and Zach are a couple that have to work so hard to get their happy ending and although they go through heartache to get there, it was beautiful to watch their relationship truly evolve. Zach struggled for years with mental health issues he didn't realize he had. His relationship with his father was tremulous and his relationship with his sister was very sweet. As someone who has lost a parent, this story truly hit close to home. Although the death of Zach's mother was mentioned in the book and as readers, we didn't experience the relationship they had with her, it was undeniable how much he and his sister both loved their mom and how much it affected both of them.

Zach acted impulsively at the beginning of his and Jason's relationship, but when Jason realizes why he made the choices he did, Jason is more than supportive and shows Zach what true love is. They both discovered how much they could help each other and that's what makes this a beautiful story. The stories of these men were written with so much heart and the way the supporting characters were weaved into their lives gave the story so much more depth. This was one of those stories I truly did not want to end.
If you enjoy the friends-to-lovers trope then I would highly recommend this book. If you have not read Sammy and Will's story, I would recommend reading their story first as it gives a glimpse of how Jason and Zach met.

This is the second book and I was so ready to read this book, especially when we meet Jason in the first book as he is Will’s best friend. I truly wasn’t sure what to expect but when I saw how long this book was, I just knew it was going to be good. I really loved how we get to see them as teens and then as grown men. It makes you see the growth that they go through.

I seriously love how these two become friends and it was all because their sisters were friends. I loved how the sisters had a huge part in pointing out that the guys liked one another.

I felt for Zach so much. Poor baby Zach. He just wants to be loved and Jason loves him so hard. When we find out his issues, it truly made sense. The love he has for the little boy, Sean, it makes me so happy that the little boy has someone he could truly look up to.

I really wished we got to see the dad more in the second part of the book because I wanted to see their relationship now that Zach was back home. I also loved that we get to see them both each other and love seeing how Jason discovers his own sexuality.

The ending was super sweet. I cannot wait to read Jimmy’s story because I have a feeling it’s going to be a good one. This author does amazing when it comes to mental health and I was so here for it.

One of my favorite things I loved is how Jason calls Zach honey. Just too cute.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Zach 🫶Jason 🚑⚽️
Roots Run Deep by @melodyclaire
ARC Review
Quick synopsis:
After tragedy struck Zach’s family during his junior year of high school, they move to Astaire where Jason has lived all his life. Zach and Jason don’t connect until the summer after senior year where they form a fast friendship. Zach leaves for college and they maintain their friendship, eventually leading to a relationship when an unfortunate accident has one leaving the other in a very upsetting way. Part 2 picks up 9.5 years later with one having a lot to make up for.

I loved this book for all the heart wrenching parts. It also made me want to throw my book across the room 😂 The way the break up happened was really triggering for me so I had lost all respect for the “villain” and he had a long way to go on his road to redemption. The mental health representation in this book was so dang good. I was so grateful for the Author’s Note at the end of the book. It was validating to see that she felt the same way writing it as I did reading it at certain points. Mental health is such an individual journey. What’s true for one may not be the case for another. I suffer myself and can tell you it can be a wild ride to not know why your brain does what it does.

I also really enjoyed that so much of the story wasn’t solely focused around the down & dirty. I loved getting to know the boys that much deeper. The spicy parts, while not as prevalent as some books, were 🔥🥵. Z & J were so swoon worthy. And let me tell you, the word Honey 🍯 was never more hot than in this book. Oh, and the kid aspect 😭 ugh, crying for days.

I cannot wait for the next book in this series. I don’t ever want the stories of Astaire to end.

Roots Run Deep is book two in the Once and Always series. This MM second chance romance story is about Jason and Zach.

We first got to meet Jason as Will’s best friend in book one. We also got a hint at something happening between Jason and Zach, so I was eager to read their story. It definitely was an emotional one. Jason and Zach formed a friendship the summer before Zach headed off to college. I absolutely adored both of them and enjoyed seeing their friendship turn into so much more. Zach was the only person Jason had ever been attracted to, and Jason was the first guy Zach had been interested in. But tragedy strikes, and just when I thought they were getting through it together, my heart broke for Jason when Zach walked away without a word.

Nine years later, Zach returns to try to make amends. Unfortunately, this part of the story didn’t work for me, especially Zach’s explanation for why he ghosted Jason. It was sad to hear about the struggles Zach faced. I had trouble understanding how after nine years Zach wanted to apologize, yet he still didn’t really understand himself and he hadn’t gotten help for his mental health issues. I think I could have been more on board with how it all played out if it had happened within a year or so after Zach left. Jason was a special person to be able to forgive Zach, and I appreciated his patience and the support he gave him.

This book was definitely an emotional roller coaster. You can expect a bi awakening, demi rep, mental health rep, and found family in this second chance romance story.

I received an advanced copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

I received an E-ARC from the author and this is my honest review

After loving Sammy and Will's story, I couldn’t pass up the chance to read Jason and Zach’s story, and I was completely captivated by their emotional journey from start to finish.

Melody Claire introduces us to Zach, a seemingly confident soccer star, and Jason, whose quiet demeanor draws Zach in instantly. Behind Zach’s charming exterior is a young man grappling with deep pain—his mother’s death, a difficult relationship with his father, and the weight of looking after his younger sister. As their bond grows during the summer after high school, tragedy strikes, leading Zach to make choices that tear them apart. Years later, despite everything, they find that their connection is still alive, setting the stage for a beautiful second-chance love story.

This book dives into the complexities of mental health and how it affects relationships. Zach’s decisions, though heartbreaking, are portrayed with a deep understanding of his emotional struggles. The author skillfully unpacks how his trauma and PTSD shaped his actions, and while Jason doesn’t just forgive and forget, he offers Zach compassion and patience, showing the depth of his love.

One of the standout elements of the story is the way the two communicate. The two choose to open up to each other and reveal their honesty, which made their relationship even more authentic. Their first kiss was incredibly sweet, one of the most tender I’ve ever read, leaving me swooning.

Jason’s demisexuality is portrayed with authenticity, and Zach’s gentle understanding of his boundaries only deepens their connection. I also loved the brief cameo of Sammy and Will, which felt like a heartwarming nod to fans of Claire’s previous work.

Overall, this was an angsty, emotional read that left a lasting impression. Melody Claire has crafted another unforgettable story, and I can’t wait to see what she brings us next.

These two hold so much power over each other, even after all these years apart. Zack and Jason have been through a lot of challenges to get their happy ending that they always dreamed of. What I like about the story the most is how Jason Comfort Zack and reassures him that everything is going to be fine. I also like how they both support one another with everything that is going on in their lives and they always stand by each other side after they reunite. Both characters have fun, sad, and happy moments. Some parts make you very sad and others will make you want them to have an amazing relationship. What I like about Zach is how much grown since he was a teenager. He was able to move forward towards a better mental health and a better life for himself. I also like that he learned to let others in. And to see just how amazing life can be with others around that care for him. And I also love the fact that he is a caring person that wants everybody to have somebody in their lives that will support them and be with them no matter what. Jason‘s character is a open honest and caring person. I like that he is able to forgive what has happened in the past and move on to build a better future for himself and the person he loves. I really did enjoy reading about these two so much. I love that you get to see many Different sides of these characters. I also like the fact that you were to meet the past characters from the first book in the series. Then you get to meet future characters from the next book.

Oh wow. Wow wow wow.

I do not recommend "Roots Run Deep." Up until the last 10%, my gripes about the book were mainly about the narrative choices. I think the reason for the separation between the MMCs was a stretch that could have made more sense if Claire had gone about it differently.

The pace when the two MMCs were reunited was also insane, especially for a book with as many pages as this one had.

But the thing that slam dunked this book into the "absolutely the fuck not" basket for me was the way

I found this story to be a nice, good book. The writing I thought was good, the characters themselves were detailed and each had their own individual background and personalities. The flow of the story was decent, but at times it felt as though the story dragged on. There were times where the scenes between Jason and Zach just felt repetitive and redundant.. I felt like their relationship in the beginning developed gradually overtime which I liked. But then after their falling out Jason didn't want to hear Zach's apologies, (rightfully so..), then a couple chapters later they are rekindling their relationship from years prior. It just felt a bit unbalanced to me.

Other than that I enjoyed it. I found the relationship development in the beginning was written really well. I loved how Zach and Jason built a strong friendship first, then overtime realized that they may like one another as more than just friends. While it did feel slow at times, I think it was exactly what was needed in the beginning. It gave both characters time to get to know one another, connect, and grow. I adored Mandy and Drea, they were fabulous throughout the whole story. The love they have for their older brothers was so endearing, and seeing Jason become so close to Drea was so sweet.

All in all a great read! Here are some tropes you'll find: Friends to lovers,
Summer romance,
Hurt/Comfort,
Mental health representation, and many more!

Melody's second book in the Once and Always series is a heartfelt second-chance love story of Jason and Zack, both are lovable characters, despite their flaws. Set in a small town and spanning many years, these men endure tragedy, and mental and emotional struggles to finally find their hard-earned HEA.

The book is split into two, somewhat equal parts. The first is the beautiful story of the growing friendship between Zack, the new kid in town, and Jason, the gentle, kind local beloved by everyone. Melody spent enough time showing us how the successful soccer player who comes from a wealthy family has essential things missing from his life and how Jason slowly opens up to the possibility of liking him more than just a friend. I adored this part of the book, loved the demi representation … but was kind of holding my breath because I knew the hurt was coming. By the time the second part starts, years had passed. Jason is happily living a simple life when Zack shows up out of the blue … not realizing how badly he broke Jason and the extent of hurt his ex still carries in his heart. We follow both men as they deal with their traumatic past, as they slowly let their guards down to see if what they once had was real or not, salvageable or not. Eventually, Jason begins to see the Zack he had fallen in love with all those years ago, the kind, compassionate person he got to know. There are a lot of things happening aside from the love story so this is not a short book but with so many side characters (loved the cameos from the first book!) and deep emotions, it is an enjoyable, beautiful second chance read.
