Gli Agenti delle Quattro Stagioni: La Danza della Primavera, Vol. 1

Rate this book

My thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press/Yen On for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

DNF at 8%. I hated the way Spring spoke. Completely, 100% HATED it. I refused to subject myself to 92% more of it and threw in the towel before it became a hate read.

This was completely a "me" problem and not a "book" problem. It has a good concept, but that wasn't enough for this reader. YMMV

2, I didn't hate the book, just the speech pattern of the MC h, stars.

DNF at about 44% of the book. I thought the premise was very promising, but I think it just fell short for me.
I did enjoy how I felt like I was watching an anime in the beginning and the illustrations throughout the book were so cute. I think I just started getting confused as to what the purpose of the Agent of Spring was, and the POV switched a lot throughout the paragraphs to different characters without a stop or telling it was being switched. So, it was a little hard to understand and keep up.

DNF. I am so disappointed by this! The cover is beautiful, and I loved the concept, but the execution was lackluster. If this was ever made into an anime, I'd probably give it a chance just to see if the problems I had with the reading experience aren't as unbearable.

A lot of it came down to personal taste. The female main character talks in the third person, pauses a lot, and sounds childlike even though she's sixteen. There is a reason for this explained early on, but I couldn't even think about continuing with it for the whole volume, and it's a rather large light novel!

There was also a scene in the first part where the death of a minor character's parent is mentioned, and it's way too early for me in my own healing journey to be reading about that. It was supposed to be a heartwarming scene, but all it did was make me sad.

Two stars for the concept and some of the writing being beautifully written. I'm sure many will love this, but sadly it's not for me.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this more than I anticipated. I liked how we were dropped into the story after the Big Event has happened, and we’re meant to piece together what happened from the fragments of those who experienced it. I appreciated how stylized the writing and composition of the book was, from the fragmented writing to the sudden black pages. I’m a fan of experimentation with traditional literary practices, and I think this novel, while not overly over the top, managed to put enough of a spin on presenting the story that it kept me intrigued and wanting to read more. I also like the characters, even if they get a little too melo-y at times. I think the set up for the main story was well done, and I’m excited to see where it goes from here.

When I asked for this book, I anticipated a Manga, not a novel. However, I'm pleasantly surprised. The story delves deeper than I expected, with a focus on the four seasons, particularly spring and winter. A notable misunderstanding leads to significant trauma and pain. The narrative is intriguing, and even the side characters are engaging. Looking forward to seeing where it goes in book 2. Thanks to Netgallery and Kana Akatsuki for the opportunity to read this book.

Special thanks to the author(s), publisher, Goodreads and/or NetGalley for the review copy. All views and opinions expressed are honest and my own.

An emotional story of regret, trauma and forgiveness coupled with romance in a world where the seasons are called upon by those chosen as God’s representatives.

This is a light novel with a beautiful, eye-catching cover sparking themes of romance and opposite character personalities. Although the latter is evident, this story is far from romance centric.

The plot of this story is unique and interesting. Our story starts with Lady Hinagiku and Lady Sakura bringing Spring quietly, with reminiscences of the past. A past that has not only affected them but also the Agent of Winter, Lord Rosei and his retainer, Lord Itecho as well as the countless people waiting for Spring. A kidnapping that occurred ten years ago in the Town of Winter, and is forever living with these four characters, every waking moment. While painting the beauty of the land and world, this book slowly uncovers the mystery of what happened ten years ago and the impact it had.

This volume depicts trauma, anger, greed, repentance, torture, loneliness and suicidal thoughts. It weaves these emotions and feelings with love, hope, trust, sadness, forgiveness and acceptance. This story beautifully portrays these emotions and many more, interweaving them with each character’s flaws, their strengths and actions.

This book is loosely divided into four parts; introducing the four Agents and their retainer. However the story primarily focuses on the Agent of Spring, Lady Hinagiku and her retainer, Lady Sakura. The strength and courage Lady Hinagiku shows is truly commendable and inspiring as she looks on with purpose in her life. Although my heart cried for Lady Hinagiku’s circumstances and her ordeal, I wanted to read more about Lord Rosei. To me, Lord Rosei’s situation is worrisome because he’s depicted as a character with suicidal thoughts; hated by some and disliked by most; and fearing for his life as the Agent of the most disliked season, Winter.

The physical copy of volume one has a beautiful pull out page, with gorgeous artwork of each Agent and their retainer as well as short character introductions. There are also darkened pages to represent flashbacks or dreams. Lastly, there is artwork throughout representing the most emotional and heart wrenching scenes as well as the beautiful and gentle Spring beauty.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It started off slow and repetitive but gradually builds a tale of broken hearts and overflowing emotions. This volume ends with a promise of action and many unknowns so I’m looking forward to picking up the next volume.

3.5⭐

Have you ever seen an upcoming title with a premise so good, a story so beautiful, that you want to read it right away? But when it comes out, you find out that the summary is pretty much the story and that's it? Well, that's this book for me. I love the concept and the story, but sadly the execution just fell flat in every single way.

The story takes place in the land of Yamato, in a world where the four seasons bestowed their powers onto humans who then act as their agents. The agents' duty is to bring the seasons into the world, each protected by a retainer. This book serves as an introduction to all the four agents in Yamato, but the plot heavily revolves around the agent of spring, Kayo Hinagiku, and her retainer, Himedaka Sakura. Hinagiku got kidnapped during an attack meant for the agent of winter, Kantsubaki Rosei, and was kept captive for ten long years. She has since returned, but the incident left a deep scar for all the parties involved.

…and really, that's about 85% of the book. The remaining 15% is about history repeating itself and the exact same tragedy is happening to another agent, but by the end of the book, nothing has been done about it. The writing style is poetic and introspective, so naturally the portion of internal thoughts and emotions outweighs the amount of plot progression. As much as I sympathize with the characters, too much of something is never good. There's also a LOT of telling instead of showing, and it was especially bad in chapter 4 considering what happened. It's like reading a summary instead of a full story, and it's also extremely repetitive since we're reading about the same event over and over again from various perspectives.

Not sure if I'm gonna continue with the series, but since there might be more action in the next volume, I want to at least give that one a try before deciding.

「... no flower blooms forever, my dear Winter
but forever i will follow after you, as does the moon ... 」

From the creators of Violet Evergarden comes this promising urban fantasy, set in the otherworldly Yamato, where humans harness the power of the seasons, and where divinity and deities set in motion a string of events that can shake their whole world.

Agents of the Four Seasons has everything: living with PTSD, the angst & rekindled embers of the heart for old paramours, devoted retainers and their unwavering bonds with their Agents, seasons and godly vessels, conspiracies of the magical and political kind. All of these woven in Kana Akatsuki's lush prose and worldbuilding, this book is an Experience. What intrigued me the most was the character relationships between Hinagiku, Rosei, Sakura and Itecho — of whom these four set into motion the major conflicts in this book, stemming from an event triggered 10 years ago, that is affecting them and the world they live in at the present.

All of these story elements are in Akatsuki's wheelhouse, and this was a fantastic first volume — offering a look into the world of Yamato, the workings of bonds that help retain the humanity within the divine, a cast of characters with an equal amounts of intriguing relationships and character dynamics, and most importantly, as with her previous work, dissects the many facets of human emotions, all forms of love, and healing from trauma. The lovely illustrations rendered by Suoh complemented the mood of the story and I can’t wait to see where it will go from here!

Thank you so much again to Yen Press for providing me an ARC of one of my anticipated reads of the year! This in no way affects my review and all opinions are my own.

What a beautiful, elegant cover, so perfect for a story about 4 beautiful gods incarnate, called Agents, who embody and create the 4 seasons.

After learning about how this came to be, we are soon drawn into a deeply emotional story of guilt and despair but also perseverance and hope. Love and even obsession is part of this story too, in many different forms.

This starts with Hinagiku, the Agent of Spring, and her retainer Sakura. Something that moved many lives, happened ten years go. It made Hinagiku unable to bring Spring upon the land, but she’s back now, creating Spring and in what a special , meaningful and unexpected place. It took me a while to get into the story, but after that happened I became really invested.

We learn more and more about what exactly happened 10 years ago, while we get to know all Agents and their retainers and how it affected them.

Just when I thought some of them were stuck in dark thoughts and routine, a new tragedy happened, but in a way this is what some of them needed. This made for a Cliffhanger ending, but it was a very satisfying ending anyway. I am very curious about what will happen in volume 2.

Thank you Yen Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read an arc of this beautiful story.

Agents of the Four Seasons, aka ✨childhood trauma✨ - honestly, can’t expect anything else from the creator of Violet Evergarden.

I think I would have liked it a lot more if everyone was maybe 4-5 years older.

Agents of the Four Seasons, Vol. 1
by Kana Akatsuki (Author); Suoh (Illustrator)
4.9/5 ✨🌸🌼🌻☀️🍂🍄🪺❄️☃️

I feel so, so lucky to have stumbled across this beautiful story. What a sheer gift this title was to consume! I honestly kept stopping myself from reading it because I didn’t want it to end! So, my apologies and my fault this review is a little late.

I want to start by answering the afterword left by the author. This title found me in the season of Winter ❄️, just beginning. Autumn doesn’t want to let go just yet. No flowers are blooming, but the cool breeze is always nearby to remind me that Winter is on the way. To feel the authors support to keep on pushing and living despite of it all was exactly the message I needed to hear in this season of my life. It’s amazing how the world brings you the books you need, if you’re only willing to listen.

You have succeeded in making my world a little bit kinder; you gave me something more than wonderful. This story was gut wrenching and soul embracing all in one. I absolutely loved it. The beautiful images sprinkled throughout only added to the magic of this story. This did reach me and it did make me sad; but it gave me hope and happiness again. I cannot even begin to explain to you how thankful I am that you took time within the limited time we have to write this story. It was so beautiful.

I cannot wait for the second volume of this story. I am waiting with bated breath! I can’t wait to snag a physical copy of this book as well. It’s truly a work of art I cannot wait to have on my forever shelf. This story is laced with pure magic and will both destroy and rebuild you. Please don’t hesitate and read this title!! It’s so beautiful. 🥹🩵

Thank you so much to the author, publisher, illustrator and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this ARC!! 🩷📚

"Agents of the Four Seasons, Vol. 1: Dance of Spring, Part I" by Kana Akatsuki is a profound and emotionally charged journey that demands a certain mindset from its readers. This volume is not simply a novel; it is a work of art that delves deep into the complexities of human emotions, painting a vivid picture of trauma, anger, repentance, torture, loneliness, and suicidal thoughts, interwoven with themes of love, hope, trust, sadness, forgiveness, and acceptance.

Akatsuki's stylized writing and composition, including fragmented prose and sudden black pages, add a unique dimension to the storytelling, inviting readers to immerse themselves in the raw emotions depicted on the page. Each character is flawlessly crafted, with their strengths, flaws, and actions blending seamlessly with the spectrum of emotions portrayed throughout the narrative.

Approaching this volume as an art piece rather than a traditional novel allows readers to fully experience the depth and richness of the story. The poetic and introspective writing style enhances the emotional impact of the narrative, inviting readers to reflect on the characters' experiences and internal struggles.

It's important to note that this is volume one, not book one, signifying a substantial focus on world-building and character introductions. "Agents of the Four Seasons" is a heartfelt journey that navigates the darker corners of the human psyche, touching on themes that may require trigger warnings for some readers (which was never addressed at the start of the novel). Proceed with caution and openness, as you embark on this moving exploration of emotions and human experiences.

A massive thank you to netgalley for allowing me to review this beautiful book.

arc received in exchange for an honest review. thank you, netgalley and yen press!

This light novel begins a series centered around the origin of the four seasons, and the agents who keep the cycle turning. It first follows Hinagiku, the Agent of Spring, who returns after a decade of disappearance and does not return just with her chosen season, but a brave decision to face the trauma and regret of what happened ten years ago.

Like many others, I mistakenly thought this was a manga, and I don't have much experience with light novels. I enjoyed the lovely artwork and the unique formatting for things like flashback pages, but overall I didn't enjoy my reading experience. It was really hard to get into in the beginning because of Hinagiku's speaking patterns, and I didn't particularly enjoy Sakura as a character right away. I think I enjoyed Rosei more overall, especially with the dip into darker themes, but overall the story didn't captivate me and I was a little confused on the purpose of the Agents and relation to the seasons.

I personally won't be continuing, but if you enjoy stories about reconciling mistakes and dark pasts as well as worldbuilding centered around the four seasons, I would recommend you give this a try. I've heard the physical version especially is quite lovely!

⭐️3.5 stars

the premise of the story was really intriguing; initially when I heard about this book being adapted into an anime, I was super hyped by the news as I thought the concept of the book was interesting. I dived right into the story not rly knowing what it was about. but to be honest, I felt disappointed as I thought I would like the story more than I actl did in the end.

majority of the story was focused around kidnappings; which in and of itself isn't very impressive to me as I feel like there was so much under-utilised and under-expanded potential to it. furthermore, it was heavily centred around each character's trauma and their psyches, which at times slowed down plot precession.

HOWEVER, the descriptive writing and the good flow of the story made up for it's shortcomings. even though i mentioned that I didn't like how the book was focused a lot on trauma, I rly liked how the author expanded on the themes of trauma and how it rly affecting the characters in different ways.

regardless, I think it's a relatively east read for me as I picked it up pretty easily and was practically hooked to it for the past few days😗

What a beautifully tragic love story!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I will admit that when I picked up this book, I expected a manga and not a light novel. This book is so well written though I was not disappointed at all.

In Agents of the Four Seasons we focus mostly on Hinagiku and Rosei the agents of spring and winter. I won’t give you to much info about the plot as this light novel immerses you in the story right off the bat, but I will say someone or perhaps something is after the agents of each season and putting an end to them. The seasons however just want to live their lives peacefully, and without fear.

Honestly, this book was such an interesting read and I would say that if you’re looking for a light novel that is filled with romance, magic, tragedy, drama, and characters that will have you thinking about them long after you close the book, than this is the light novel for you!

A huge thank you to netgalley and YenPress for the opportunity to read this novel early!

HAPPY READING 📖

I give this a solid 4.5/5. As expected, this was quite an emotional read. I love the writing style (except for the occasional foul language lol). I find the story very interesting, though it felt like not much happened since it focused a lot on flashbacks of the incident that happened in the story. The age gaps are also a bit iffy in my opinion (not too big of a difference tho!), but I still enjoyed the relationships between the characters (though I’m not too surprised about the age differences because this is by the same author as Violet Evergarden.) and the love is really pure between all the characters.

Overall, I love it so much and am excited for the anime adaptation of this series! The only thing I wasn’t the biggest fan of was the foul language (though that is just a personal thing, I just crossed out the language that bothered me lol.). Though be warned that the story does talk about suicidal thoughts and struggles that the characters went through, just in case that stuff bothers you.

I had so many issues accessing and reading this book that it seemed likely I would dnf, however I am glad I managed to finish as the afterword of this book truely made me reconsider the story I had just read.

The world of this series is incredibly magical yet simple. Humans have been granted powers to bring forth the seasons.

Initially, I viewed this premise as uncomplicated however it is clear the author has put a great depth of thought into the implications that such powers would have politically, socially and on the mental health of the agents.

The writing was my main issue when reading as it felt like it lacked flow with constant flashbacks, inner thoughts and so many ellipses. However, I’m not one to hold what may be simply translation errors at fault when the story was so interesting.

Overall, fairly interesting premise and I hope to be able to read and enjoy the other remaining volumes!

Thankyou, Yenpress and Netgalley for an arc of this book for an honest review

I bought this on a whim as it's written by Kana Akatsuki (the author Violet Evergarden) and it did not disappoint.

The cover and synopsis made me go into this thinking it would be some kind of heart-warming, fairy-tale like romance. But it's so much more than that. Each character is flawed, so it may be frustrating to read, but I think that's what makes the story really come alive.

The story is very much slow-burn so you won't get overwhelmed by the amount of exposition, although that can sometimes make the plot a bit confusing to follow. The poetic writing fits the story, and the illustrations are a nice addition, I really enjoyed this.

I hope I can get my hands on volume 2 before I forget everything that happened in this volume🥲

😍😍😍😭😭😭🤩🤩🤩
I got to know author Kana Akatsuki when I watched the adaptation of “Violet Evergarden” made by Kyoto Animation. It was a touching and great story about relationships and memories.

And now with a new journey with 4 seasons, Kana Akatsuki wouldn’t let me down. The world’s setting was enormous and beautiful. The characters had their own stories which were interesting (I cried so hard for each chapter 😅😅😅). There were several psychological disorders that were mentioned in each main character. Problems with relationships (various), generations, responsibilities, and adversities had been written well enough to make me wanted to read more about this series.

I’m looking forward to reading Part 2 in Spring section.

i've been waiting for this book ever since the first announcement and i had to wait almost four years to get it licensed in english and kana akatsuki did not fail me. from the very first part of the story, it pulled my heart strings and made me weep (i'm also assuming it's probably because i'm on my period)

the political aspects are VERY interesting and i'm actually now looking forward to all their dynamics and how the politics would move forward, and also as an avid romance i'm HIGHLY expecting the romance. so far, it's very strong but i still feel mixed with some characters.

can't wait for volume 2!

I got a copy from Netgalley but this is my honest opinion.

I like the concept of seasons. It is an interesting take. It’s just that I am not enjoying the writing. It’s a bit boring for me. And I get confuse between Spring and her bodyguard (retainer) name. Especially because its a little similar so when they call Sakura by her last name. I get it mix up with Hinagiku halfway through the novel. I also do not like how there are so many changes of POV’s. I am invested in the relationships (the main couples and their retainers) but I think I will pick up the manga instead of the light novel.

DNF 50% -> 2,5

I tried. I really tried. But none of these characters were able to grab me in the slightest.
I know there is a public for this type of stories, but I'm not it. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with it (I think it is very well written), but it's just the type of thing I don't have any patience for.
I was not really fond of Hinagiku, Sakura or the Winter boy. I liked his agent, but... eh.
Slow-paced, lots of drama and romantic confusions.
Because of the cover, I went on expecting an ancient japanese period setting: I got a modern setting instead. It is what it is.

i was excited for this more than any light novels i had yet to read; but i can't measure my disappointment after finishing it.

the title was really interesting and better than other LNs. i just didn't expect that an LN so widely loved have a corny writing style. i don't know if it's the author or the translator, but i just can't take the prose. it was more telling than showing, and it gave me the impression that the author only wrote it for it to be animated. there's no interesting characters for me and i couldn't care less for the plot. this is basically just an interesting title, pretty art, and a wasted concept.

I thought this would be cute and light-hearted. Seeing as this is the follow up series from the author of Violet Evergarden, I should have known better.

I will start by saying, Agents of the Four Seasons is definitely not for everyone. I saw the critiques others had regarding one character's speech patterns, but found it less bothersome than that character's companion, who I found insufferable on more than one occasion.

Regardless, I'm excited to see how these characters all develop as the series goes on.

Definitely curious to see how the anime chooses to adapt it as well!

I love shoujo manga and so I love the FMC’s goal in the story. I feel though that a lot of feelings weren’t drawn out to make Yuuki’s “wish” seem so hard to achieve.

I also think that too many things are happening in the first volume to really digest all the emotions the mangaka wants readers to feel. It was quite difficult to get invested in the story because it was moving too fast.

Overall it does have potential and is possibly something I would have read when I was younger.

I always love when they turn manga series into actual books. It is so interesting to see how important the artwork is within a manga, but also that our imagination when we read can really take off. This was a delightful read, and I will always recommend manga that is transferred into novel style.
