An Assassin with a forbidden power. A Princess with a deadly secret. A Mage with a dying magic.
The King of Atjas outlawed magic twenty years ago, ensuring the prosperity of his human kingdom and the eradication of magical beings across the continent. But not everyone is willing to comply. Ashe, the most skilled assassin in the capital, is on a mission to find her younger sister. She disregards the king’s orders by using a magical dagger that entraps her victim’s souls, and defies the laws of magic as a human who can channel its power–something that should be utterly impossible… and very deadly. Eleanora, the princess raised to despise anyone who isn’t human and fated to continue her father’s work, discovers she’s a Shapeshifter. When this revelation comes to light, both the assassin’s and the princess’s lives implode, threatening to shatter a kingdom held together by lies. Ashe must trust her skills, bend her morals, and rely on a judgemental Mage if she wants any chance of escaping persecution and finding her sister. Eleanora must forge new alliances, embrace her true nature, and reconsider everything she’s been taught if she wishes to be free. Can they save themselves and those who dare help them? Will they uncover the hidden truths behind their kingdom’s facade? And will they save their loved ones or lose themselves in the process?

Agora: as personagens NOSSA SENHORAAAAA eu AMEIIIII a Eleanora!!!!
Twenty years ago, King Byron of Atjas committed a Genocide, killing all mages and magical creatures in the Kingdom. Sure, that if he allowed them to live, they would destroy his reign.
Five years ago, Ashe's little sister Ari was kidnapped. In order to find her, Ashe turned to the King of the Underworld Garth, embracing the darkness and the magic within her to become a ruthless assassin. Ending the lives of anything magical on King Byron's orders, while knowing if the very king she killed for discovered this, he would end her life without remorse.
A few weeks ago, Great Princess Eleanora started having nightmares. Her hands would turn to claws, her skin became covered with fur. In her dreams, she became the very monster her father hunted.
When these three lives collide, Atjas will never be the same.
I really enjoyed this. All of the characters were wonderful, except for Ashe and Theo. Honestly, she was just so wrapped up in her crap that it didn't matter what anyone told her. As far as she was concerned, she was evil, and she spent the entire book lamenting her evil status. Theo is an absolutely judgemental jerk, and while he's supposed to be, it gets to the point where I can't imagine, no matter how badly he is needed, anyone tolerating him for long. I pretty much wanted to throat punch him the entire book, which means I genuinely could not understand how Ashe saw anything likable, much less attractive in him. Eleanora, however, was absolutely amazing. She could have and probably had more reason to take the same path Ashe did, and she just never did. I mean, she had to accept that her dad wasn't just a genocidial maniac but that she quite easily could have been the same. If any character deserved to wallow a little bit, it was her, and while she absolutely did, she found ways to pick herself up multiple times. King Byron is 100% the stereotypical "mad king," and I was here for it, especially how this affects Eleanora's growth as a character. Her reactions to finding out all of these horrendous things about her dad were 100% on how I would have responded.
In terms of the world building, it was really well and simply done. Much of the history and mythology is conveyed by one of the characters telling a story, which is just a brilliant way to insert world building into a book without it being awkward. The magic system wasn't anything truly unique, but I don't believe it really needed to be. It's similar to enough other magic systems that even though I wasn't 100% sure how it all worked, the lack of a full explanation didn't detract from the story. Plus, with how this ends, I have a feeling they'll be way more in-depth information in the next book.
My only complaints are that some of the dialogue is a little rough. It's not horrible, but there were definitely more than a few times where something a character said just didn't feel like a realistic response. The fight scenes were not the greatest either and there were several times when Ashe does something in a fight (without the aid of magic) where I reread the scene like fives because there was no way gravity or physics would allow that.
Overall, this was a solid first book in a new series. It had just enough action to break up the monotony of being stuck in Ashe's brain, some solid characters, and a simple but intriguing plot about how destructive hate is.
As always, thanks to NetGalley and Iolanda Santos for the eArc!
A Captivating Tale of Magic, Betrayal, and Hidden Power
The Last of Their Kind by Iolanda Santos is an extraordinary journey through a kingdom where magic is outlawed, secrets are deadly, and power comes with a price. The story grabs hold of you from the first page and doesn’t let go.
At the core of this tale are Ashe, a skilled assassin wielding forbidden magic, and Eleanora, a princess whose discovery of her true nature as a shapeshifter turns her world upside down. Both women are pushed to their limits as they uncover dangerous truths about their kingdom and themselves.
What makes this book so compelling?
- Multifaceted Characters: Ashe and Eleanora are complex and flawed, and their personal growth throughout the story is gripping. Ashe’s determination to rescue her sister while grappling with her forbidden power and Eleanora’s struggle with her newfound abilities make for a dynamic, emotional read. Their imperfections make them relatable and their evolution feels authentic.
- Tense, Intricate Plot: The story masterfully weaves together forbidden magic, political intrigue, and deep-rooted secrets. Every twist adds layers of complexity to the world and its characters, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The blend of personal stakes and kingdom-wide consequences makes for a thrilling narrative.
- Seamless World-Building: The world-building in The Last of Their Kind is exceptional. Without ever overwhelming the reader, the world of Atjas and its history unfold naturally, making the setting feel lived-in and real. The tension between magic and law adds a fresh dynamic to the story, keeping the reader engaged as more layers of the kingdom’s past are revealed.
- A Jaw-Dropping Ending: The ending is both satisfying and agonizing in the best way. It offers just enough resolution to feel rewarding, while leaving plenty of questions and setting the stage for the next chapter of the story. It’s the kind of ending that lingers in your mind long after you’ve finished reading.
For anyone who loves stories filled with magic, morally complex characters, and high-stakes adventure, The Last of Their Kind delivers on every front. This is a must-read for fans of immersive fantasy worlds with richly layered plots and unforgettable characters. I can’t wait to see where the journey takes us next!

The First of Their Kind introduces readers to a dark and intriguing world where magic has been eradicated under the rule of the King of Atjas. The story primarily follows Ashe, a young assassin forced to survive in the underworld in exchange for information about her missing sister. Armed with a magical dagger that can trap souls, she defies the kingdom’s strict laws, making her an anomaly—someone who shouldn’t exist.
The story also follows the journey of Princess Eleanora who was raised to see non-humans as a threat and to carry on her father’s crusade against magic, and Theo (my sweet Theo), an apothecary worker whose skill and knowledge came as a need to protect those he loves.
One of the book’s strengths is its engaging plot and the complex relationships between its characters. Ashe’s relentless pursuit of her sister and her dynamic with her companions create emotional depth and tension. The contrast between the two protagonists, one fighting to reclaim what was taken from her and the other realizing she has been part of the problem, adds layers to the story.
However, while the worldbuilding provides enough information to understand the story’s stakes, it sometimes feels like it only scratches the surface. The world of Atjas is fascinating, but I wanted to know more about its history, its people, and the extent of its lost magic. That being said, the hints of a larger, richer world make you eager to keep reading.
Definitely worth checking out (I read in one day as I could not drop the book) and support a portuguese author 🫶🏻
Political intrigue, interesting magic systems, complex and diverse characters, assassins, and shape shifters: this book has it all! A huge thank you to the Iolanda Santos (the author) for letting me read this book as an ARC, but please know all opinions are truly my own. Some of the biggest selling points for me: 1) The world building in this story was sprinkled throughout, rather than as a complicated info dump. 2) Our two FMCs are not perfect, and at times even a bit frustrating, but they both have huge turning points in the story, and their flaws make them more relatable characters. 3) The ending was ✨chefs kiss✨ it was probably one of the best endings I’ve read in a while, somehow both a cliffhanger and provided some answers.
If you love adventure stories like Throne of Glass, a bit of romance (think enemies to lovers with a TWIST), and heists, this fantasy novel is for you! I already cannot wait for book two!!
I was really curious to read this fantasy. The multiple pov’s of the different characters was something that really captivated me. I felt like I was a giant looking down on the world and watching it all happen.
I wish there had been a bit more romance but the plot was interesting and unpredictable. I was also really amazed by how detailed everything was, please read the Glossary, it really changed my perception of the world.
The book ends on a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read the next one!
Characters: - Ashe, Theo, Eleanora, Reed, Sherri and Tate
"The First of Their Kind" is a promising debut novel and the first book in a trilogy that shows great potential. The characters in this story are well-developed and have depth, making the reader feel invested in their journey. The inner conflicts and moral dilemmas faced by the characters add an interesting layer to the plot.
While the world building could have been more detailed, the mentions of rich history, religion, and culture lay a solid foundation for future books in the series. The pacing of the story is mostly well-done, although there are a few sections that feel rushed or unnecessary.
The protagonist, Ashe, is a strong female character whose point of view is engaging and enjoyable to follow. The simple plot is well-told, allowing the reader to easily follow along with the story. I look forward to hopefully seeing more of the world and magic that lies within it in the next books.
Some of the themes that were explored throughout the story that I enjoyed are:
1. Morality and Ethics: The characters in the novel are faced with moral dilemmas and inner conflicts, forcing them to navigate complex situations and make difficult decisions. The theme of morality is central to the characters' development and drives much of the plot.
2. Loyalty and Betrayal: The concept of loyalty is a recurring theme in the novel, as characters grapple with their allegiances and the consequences of their actions. Betrayal also plays a role in the story, adding tension and conflict to the relationships between characters.
3. Identity and Self-Discovery: The protagonist, Ashe, embarks on a journey of self-discovery and growth throughout the novel. The theme of identity is explored as Ashe navigates her place in the world and uncovers hidden truths about herself and her past.
4. Power and Control: The novel delves into the dynamics of power and control, as characters vie for influence and authority in the world they inhabit. The theme of power explores the consequences of seeking power and the impact it can have on individuals and society.
5. Friendship and Sacrifice: The bonds of friendship and the sacrifices made for those we care about are important themes in the novel. Characters must navigate the complexities of their relationships and make tough choices for the greater good, highlighting the strength of their connections.
Overall, The First of Their Kind weaves these themes together to create a rich and engaging story. I am excited to see what comes from book two and where Ashe's journey takes her on the other side of the dangerous seas. I recommend this book to fans of fantasy and adventure novels.

Magic. Assassin. So much pain, she's not good enough. The story unfolds with so much depth, so much pain, and so much intensity. This story is so well thought out with such details and such interesting characters. It's light meets dark, and you can tell opposites attract. Fantastic story, impatiently waiting for the next.
The First Of Their Kind was a GREAT read and I'm so happy I got to read it! I think Ashe will be one of my favorite FMC's for a long time!! The plot wasn't as predictable as some fantasy novels tend to be, and the characters all had great depth and were very well thought out! I am a romantasy girly through and through so I wanted more romance than there actually ended up being, but it was good nonetheless!
I just got done with this book and at first I thought it was about two sister that were going through a tough time and stuff like that but then 6 years had passed and the sister is missing and I was lost on what happen to her. I’m glad the sister never did give up on trying to find her but she went through so much to find her and I feel like she was losing herself in the process of locating her sister. Great book and writing was so go it for sure a page turner because you never know what is going to happen next. The magic I did I like but I hate that they been told their whole life it was bad. I love how the princess came together and stood up for herself and everything that she believe in.
I don’t usually read fantasy books so I was not really prepared for what was about to happen! The perfect amount of fantasy, mixed with the perfect amount of romance, made me binge reading this book and I just didn’t want it to be over! I think I felt all kind of emotions and I can’t wait for the next one, I have so many theories that I need to confirm!!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you NetGalley.
The First of their Kind is a really solid book.
What I liked: - The characters felt very much real and alive. Unlike many other books, the characters weren't 100% good or evil; no mustache-twirling villains or selfless heroes ready to save all the little guys. Everyone was a mixture of selflessness and selfishness; the Light Mage is a jerk, the assassin is driven by love, the torture expert is bubbly, the escort/spy is loyal, and the tiger-princess is weak. All the characters were motivated by their own goals, their motivations were easy to understand and made sense in relation to who they were. - Ashe was a very relatable protagonist. Although I wish she would have wallowed in self-hate less, her internal monologue was rich and complex, and I found myself amazed at how human she felt. She was full of contradictions and insecurities, but also hope and love. The decisions she made and the actions she took were all aligned with her internal turmoil, which was very well done. - King Byron was a good villain. He was not evil for the sake of being evil (which is boring); he was afraid and paranoid. These feelings fueled his intolerant policies about magic, the Great Hunt, and his spiraling down during the book. Through the book, he became more and more unhinged, unstable, isolated, and paranoid. And I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. King Byron is a formidable antagonist because he is both powerful and unpredictable. - The world seemed rich in history, religion, and culture. I am looking forward to exploring more of it.
What I did not like: - I don't think I needed 5 POVs. Ashe's and Eleanora's were essential because they are the main storylines for the trilogy (I am assuming), King Byron's was a nice addition because I like villains, but I found that Theo's point of view did not add anything to the story. And Myren's was even less necessary, happening only once. - I felt like the love/romance portion of the book was its weakest point. I get that Ashe was always attracted to Theo, but he went from not trusting her to being in love with her without transition. I thought their feelings could have developed more gradually and spent less time in the "He obviously hates me, even though he gives me all the signs of being infatuated with me" phase. - Eleanora's deprogramming and unlearning of her hate towards magic was too rapid. She spent the entirety of her life being taught that magic needed to be hated and eradicated, but she let go of her prejudice in less than a week by talking to a stranger. I found that hard to believe.
What I am neutral about: - The plot was simple. Not necessarily a bad thing (especially when it is well executed), but nothing surprised me. It felt like a video game: you have your quest, gather allies, train your group, beat the minions, and then the boss, before being allowed into the next level of the game. Book #2 is going to be the next level, and book #3 is going to include the final boss. However, for this story I think it worked; it was character-driven, not plot-driven. Or maybe I enjoyed the characters more than I enjoyed the plot.
Overall, I find this was a very good book and I am looking forward to reading the next installment in the trilogy!
This was a fantastic read. I found it to be well written & has well developed characters. A new author for me & I have to say I am impressed. It has a solid plot along with many twists & turns to keep you turning the pages. Now I can’t wait for book 2. Ashe was made into a well trained assasin by her mentor Garth who ran the underground. Ash and her fellow comrads always had to be on the lookout because of guards but especially Ashe. She was talented with magic but had to hide it well. The kingdom of Atjas was ruled by a cruel king. He ordered all magical beings & creatures killed. He then proceeded to burn any magical related books as well. He said magic was evil. He had Garth put spies out listening for any reports of magic. Then one day Garth got a whisper of a magical being that was very close to the king and in the castle. When Garth told Ashe she was going with him to see the king to deliver news, she got a very bad feeling about this situation. While at the meeting they discovered the whisper was true. It was a shapeshifter and it attacked and Garth was killed . Ashe was horrified. He had information about Lyssari, her sister who had been taken from her home and Ashe had been searching for her. The meeting blew up when the shifter appeared and Reed was captured and thrown in the dungeon along with the shifter and some others. Now Ashe & Sherry are trying to break Reed out. But the underground now needs a new leader and some don’t think it should be Ashe like others say. Ashe will have to proceed carefully because with a target on her back there was always someone out to get her. I adored this story and am looking forward to the next one by this talented author.
This book is by far one of the best books I've read in the longest of times. And I almost find if hard to explain the feelings I've experienced as I read and navigated this book and this world of outlawed magic.
The story flows beautifully, the characters are deep and relatable, the themes are intentional, and development is infused in every page.
It's fair to say that this book has allowed me to look into each character and see them for who they are, not wishing to sound cliché, but loving each character's perfect imperfections makes them real, honest, and relatable.
Iolanda has masterfully given each character a personality, so nobody is solely evil, or solely good, like us, humans, and I found that refreshing, especially in a world of fantasy where that is often the case. There's multifaceted layers to each character, to the story, to the world building and I wish every book was as well thought out and written as this one is.
For a first published book, for an up and coming author, I say only CONGRATULATIONS, keep writing like this because this is for me a masterpiece. And I can't wait for the next books in this fantastic trilogy.
P.s. I love Tate, we all need a Tate in our lives.
The First of Their Kind by Iolanda R. Santos is a fantasy novel that explores themes of magic, power, survival, and sisterhood. The story is set in a world divided between light and darkness, where a prophecy foretells the end of magic through a human lineage. The novel follows Ashe and her younger sister, Lyssari, as they navigate a dangerous world ruled by powerful forces, including the sinister lord Halyn and a mysterious underground organization. The sisters’ bond is central to the narrative, with Ashe acting as a protective older sibling, especially as they live under the threat of a prophecy that could change the fate of their world. Along the way, she meets several other characters, including Princess Eleanora, who struggles with a secret identity and a yearning for freedom, and Theo, a healer with a troubled past. The plot is dense with intrigue, action, and moral dilemmas. There’s a clear dichotomy between the worlds of light and dark, and the reader is gradually introduced to the larger implications of these forces through the characters’ experiences Iolanda' writing is engaging and immersive, combining strong character dynamics with a richly detailed world, and the pace cleverly mixes moments of intense action balanced by more reflective, emotional scenes that delve into Ashe’s internal thoughts and feelings. For readers who enjoy dark fantasy with elements of magic, sisterhood, and moral conflict, this book is highly recommended.
A very intricately woven story that the author has clearly put a lot of time and effort into. Whilst the pace is slow at times and the self-hatred of the FMC gets slightly annoying and repetitive, the story itself and the other characters help bring this book to the forefront as one of the best so far this year. It's one of those books you can't help but think about between reading sessions and are eager to get back to.
It is a looooong book and the chapters don't help when they flit between scenes but are still part of the same chapter, making it an even longer read between breaks (annoying when you have a husband and kids that frequently demand attention lol). However, like I've said, even with the length of the book and the slow pace at times, this is definitely worth a read. I am looking forward to book 2 in the series.
I was really excited to read this book and be selected as an arc reader. The plot sounded intriguing I love a new and fun magic system, but once I starred I struggled to get into it, the younger sister seemed incredibly immature for her age at the start of the book and the older sister treated her very child like. I got a bit bored with the constant almost self pity, of the older sister constantly loathing herself what she's done and had to do to survive and find her sister, which I get you do worry about losing yourself but it was too much for me, aside from my dislike of the characters the plot and story was pretty good.
This book is just overall amazing for my first ever fantasy book, I feel like getting transported into a whole another universe of magic and power and I really, really love it. This is also the book that got me out of the worse reading slump, it's worth reading if you want to have an amazing time in a whole another universe that is full of magic and I love the female characters in this story they're my favorite and this was overall a mix emotion of a book for me, so I'm so thankful for Iolanda (the author) for letting me read this amazing book early! And I'm so so excited to have the physical copy of this book!! ❤
I want to start off by saying: I think this is an incredibly incredibly strong debut novel! Thank you for giving me an arc copy of this!
It took me a while to get into the story and to really connect with the characters, but i feel like that’s quite typical for a fantasy novel. But once i did, i actually had a hard time putting it down. I have loved getting to know the characters and i think it’s such a strong story.
I can’t wait to read the rest of this trilogy and to see what happens to these characters next! I honestly enjoyed going on these journeys with them and very excited to see what’s in store!
The First of Their Kind by Iolanda R. Santos Rating: 3.5/5
I found it hard to get started and once we got going it was better. I think the overall messaging about hate, fear, and acting on those emotions can ruin things is well done. It was overall a good story. I am interested to see if further books in the series grow with the story.
If you enjoyed Throne of Glass, you will LOVE this book! It has a lot of the same elements - assassins, political intrigue, light romance, outlawed magic, imprisonment, harrowing rescues, and lots of fighting. The characters are flawed but mean well and grow. The world is described as you go along in a natural feeling way, providing information as it is needed. The descriptions are vivid. I really enjoyed reading this and am so anxious to read the next book! Highly recommended!
