FIRST PLACE WINNER FOR BEST FICTION ROMANCE - BOOKFEST FALL 2024 - I’ve been a lot of things in my life—a friend, a soldier, a survivor, a man haunted by shadows. But, I never expected to be in a small coastal town. I was trying to piece together the fragments of a life shattered by war. Brookings, Oregon, was supposed to be a quiet place to hide away, but instead, it became the stage for a story I never saw coming.

It all started with a wounded German Shepherd—Shadow. He barged into my life, all paws and pain, just when I thought I had nothing left to give. And then there was Jordan, the town’s kind-hearted veterinarian with a secret of his own. He’s got this smile that could light up the darkest night, but he's been living in silence, literally. A hearing disorder kept him isolated, just as my PTSD kept me locked in my own head.

We were two broken men, hiding from the world until Shadow brought us together. I never imagined a dog could mend two broken souls. But there we were, caring for this brave creature and finding solace in each other. Jordan, with his gentle hands and empathetic eyes, slowly became my anchor. And somehow, through runs on the beach and quiet moments, we started to heal—not just Shadow, but ourselves.

Before I knew it, this town, this life, became something worth fighting for. Jordan showed me that even in the darkest times, there’s a way out, a way to live and love again. But let’s not get too sappy—because this journey wasn’t all smooth sailing. We faced our demons, both from the past and the ones we created in our heads. Yet, standing by each other’s side, we found strength in vulnerability and love in the least expected places.

So here’s the Brookings gave me more than a fresh start. It gave me Jordan, Shadow, and a family I never thought I’d have. And in the end, it turns out that maybe, just maybe, we saved each other

Hi, I’m Dave, and I’ve always believed that love is at the core of everything we do. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, I had a loving upbringing, but like many, I often felt like an outsider because of my sexuality. That feeling of being different shaped me into who I am today. It inspired my passion for helping others embrace self-love, acceptance, and resilience—both in life and in my writing.

My journey has been an interesting one. Straight out of high school, I joined the US Army, which gave me a disciplined approach to life. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that I discovered my true calling: writing. Since then, I’ve poured my heart into creating poetry, self-help, and romance novels that reflect what I care about most—love in all its forms.

I’ve been blessed with my own 35-year-long love story with my husband, which inspires much of my work. For me, every love story deserves a little magic, and my goal is to sweep readers off their feet with every page.

As a life coach for over a decade, I’ve had the privilege of helping people discover their own greatness, and that’s what I aim to do through my stories as well. Whether it’s through characters learning to love themselves or navigating life’s challenges, my writing is about showing that we’re all worthy of a beautiful, fulfilling love story.

These days, I live in Oregon with my amazing husband and two wonderful German Shepherds. Along with my sister we take care of our mother as she battles cancer. Life may be full, but so is my heart, and I’m grateful to share my journey—both personal and professional—with all of you. Thank you for being here.

Tides of the Heart is book one in the Pacific Edge series. This is the debut book by Dave Henderson. I want to say up front that I am rating this book on how it made me feel, because I felt SO MUCH! At times, it’s obvious that this is Mr. Henderson’s first book. There is a little too much detail at times. But there is so much feeling here. I loved both of the characters and what they have experienced broke my heart. And I will admit that the epilogue made my eyes water, a LOT! Good tears I assure you. Read on and I’ll tell you a little bit about these two wonderful men.

Alex Bennett is thirty two years old. It’s been two years since Alex was injured and separated from the Army. Alex suffers from severe PTSD and has tried a couple of therapists with no success. His Aunt Lynn who lives in Brookings, Oregon, convinces Alex to move to her town and try a therapist she thinks will be perfect for him. She also wants him nearby so she can try to help in whatever way she can. Just to be supportive of him. Alex has only been in town for a few weeks when a malnourished German Shepard literally crashes into his life, causing the pup severe injuries.

Dr. Jordan Williams is the local veterinarian at Pawsitive Vibes. He was the vet that received the call when Shadow, the German Shepard, was hurt. Not only did he find a dog in dire need of care, he found a man who was distraught and was also the most beautiful man he’s ever seen. Jordan also has his own trauma he is dealing with. At a young age, he lost the majority of his hearing. So he has to wear hearing aids which he despises, to be able to hear. Bullied as a child because of the hearing aids, Jordan lives in his own isolation, never completely feeling he belonged.

At the core of all of this is Alex’s Aunt Lynn who is also involved with the Vet Clinic. Let me just say that we all need an Aunt Lynn in our lives. This woman is a pillar of strength, so full of compassion.

Aunt Lynn is who convinced Alex to come to Brookings but it’s Shadow that brought Alex and Jordan together. His injuries and rehabilitation opened a whole new world to Alex. Alex and Jordan quickly bonded, neither being able to deny the connection they shared. Jordan gave Alex a measure of peace he’d never felt before. And Alex made Jordan feel more confident. He made him want to be more a part of the world he felt so shut away from.

This was such a beautiful story of finding that “person” that completes you, that makes you want to achieve all of the things you only ever dreamed of. That person you want by your side for the rest of your days. Were their paths without hurdles. Of course not. But they found a strength together that they never had by themselves.

This is also a story of found family. Of friends giving you support and strength, being there for you in your lowest of times. It’s such a beautiful story. Of course, I loved Shadow most of all. What a beautiful soul that dog has. Next, I’m going right on to read Miracle of the Heart. It’s Alex and Jordan’s Christmas novella. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next.

the coward(s) who reported my review are more than welcome to dm me! we can chat about what exactly triggered you! i’m not scary i promise.
i won’t be supporting a conservative author, but since we have to talk about the book, let’s talk about the book, shall we?

i am not a supporter of the latest show don’t tell trend, as authors seem to be writing screenplays lately and not actual novels. we’re losing so many different ways to show things, but, apparently, dave hasn’t heard any of it.
it’s all tell, tell, tell, with verbose, contrite writing.

everything is overwritten. there is no small detail that will go unwritten. i was basically asking for mercy.

it needed a HEAVY developmental, line and copy editing. proofreading probably didn’t happen as well, as there are a ton of typos and mistakes.

what else?
let’s see, the chemistry between the main characters is nowhere to be found, the plot barely made any sense, and the insta relationship gave me the ick.

Tides of the Heart - which I believe is the author's début romance novel - has the makings of a good story. We have Alex, a military veteran struggling with survivor's guilt and PTSD, and Jordan, a vet who lost his hearing aged nine and has had to overcome many challenges to get to where he is. The two meet when a dog - a german shepherd - crashes throw the unopened window in Alex's bedroom and severely injures itself, and Alex calls on the local vet for help.

I was scratching my head immediately - why would a dog that is a supposedly intelligent breed just decide to launch itself through a window?

Anyway, Jordan and his team show up and take the dog to the clinic; it's touch and go but he does pull through.

The dog - Shadow - is chipped and so Jordan is able to trace its owner, who lives thousands of miles away. Alex says he'd like to call her to tell her about what's happened, but he can't, becasue of data protection rules (or something) and in order for Jordan to give Alex the woman's phone number, Alex needs to be on staff. There's a whole convoluted process about Alex becoming a clinic volunteer - just so he can make a phone call that could easily have been made (and probably should have been made) by Jordan or one of the clinic staff.

The dog's owner explains that Shadow is a service dog she got for her dad - also a veteran - but they fell out over it and she hasn't had any contact with him for a couple of years. She says she can't afford to take Shadow and asks if he can be sold as a service dog (I have no idea how feasible that is), and Alex says he wants to look after him while he recovers.

At this point, Jordan and Alex have known each other for less than twenty-four hours, and Jordan is happy to hand over the care of an injured animal to someone he doesn't know from Adam. Plus, it's quite a big resposibility for Alex to take on considering his own difficulties with finding ways to handle his PTSD. To be fair, Alex does admit this to himself.

Like I said, there are the bones of a good story here, but the whole thing is agonisingly overwritten - there's no detail or thought or explanation too small to be included (or repeated) and the writing is often choppy and amateurish:

He remembered being on a smiliar table after the ambush. He was alone. He didn’t understand why he was alive and Brian was dead. Survivor's guilt is difficult. He'd learned about it in therapy sessions.

The use of contractions is inconsistent - which often makes the dialogue sound stilted - and I noticed several typos and wrong words used ('bare' for 'bear' / 'lied' for 'lay') and grammatical errors. Mostly, though, the book needs an editor prepared to hand out some tough love and suggest cuts to the truckload of unnecessary detail, because the book feels at least a third too long. I made it to 35% before deciding to call it quits, and I'm assuming the writing issues aren't limited to just that section.

The mental health issues seem to be handled well from what I read, and Jordan and Alex are sweet together, but their relationship lacks chemistry and the sex scenes are awkward.

The book synopsis describes a story of mutual healing, facing past demons and finding family and love. It's a story I would have liked to have been able to read, but the problems I've outlined with the writing meant I couldn't finish it.

Loved the cover, though.

DNF...

Zamknął drzwi i podszedł do drzwi kierowcy. Otworzył drzwi kierowcy, wsiadł i zamknął drzwi.

Warning this book contains realistic emotions that you will cry over then the next minute you are roaring laughing. It's the real thing!! Have your tissues handy. Although one dog does come to harm in this read he also heals two wounded souls. Relax my friends the dog is fine. he has the ultimate job!

This author is a baby author and has so much more to show his fans.
If you love a read with two amazing characters and a dog this is your book. Jordan and Alex are couple goals. Healthy relationship couple goals. They learn so much along the way about themselves. They learn to love and heal. Alex has PTSD and trust me this author wrote his character very realistic. Jordan is a veterinarian who's deaf. His insecurities from his disability and Alex PTSD make a healing process challenging. Hence shadow the German shepherd.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read romance. It's slow burn healing process kind of book.
This book is why I read romance. For a perfect hea with all the emotions. Don't miss this amazing read!

**4.5**
What a fantastic debut book from this author. I found the story really engaging, quickly came to care about the characters and enjoyed reading the book from start to finish.
There are some tough, possibly triggering moments throughout the story so be sure to read those warnings before reading.
Alex is several years from leaving the army and still dealing with PTSD, nightmares and panic attacks. His amazing aunt convinced him to move to her small town and it turns into the things that changes his life. A dog called Shadow comes into his life in extreme circumstances but the bond they build is a wonderful thing to behold. And then there is Jordan, the local vet who helped save Shadow.
A connection is quick to spark between them. I was a little surprised by how quickly things move but it feels very natural for the two of them. Jordan has lived with using hearing aids since he was nine years old and it's something he hates. Working with animals is something that brings him peace and joy but meeting Alex, someone who is so considerate when it comes to Jordan's deafness - moving into his eyeline, always facing him when talking and enunciating clearly - has him taking a step into a future he didn't think possible.
There are several tough scenes regarding Alex's PTSD that really bring the emotional toll to the story. It gets lightened by Shadow and the comfort and fun gives to Alex. Alex is brilliant in his drive to succeed but is backed by an amazing community of people, starting with Jordan and his aunt.
Well paced with the occasional lag but it's worth those moments for everything else that the author has brought to their debut novel. Excellent writing, lovable characters that I felt able to connect with and having a dog is always a winner for me.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Tides of the Heart is a debut novel for Dave Henderson, and the premise grabbed me from the start. But as much as I liked the storyline and the characters, I had a lot of trouble with this book. Let me start by saying there are some heavy themes in this book, and I think the author handled them well. The story itself was not the problem. The MCs are incredibly likable, and it’s lovely to see them taking care of each other throughout the book. I really enjoyed both the MCs and the way they were portrayed. They’re each hurting for different reasons, and Alex in particular is really struggling. I thought they were incredibly sweet with each other, and it was a nice story of two men who find each other at exactly the right time. They both needed each other, and that comes through on the page, so their growing love felt real and organic.

This book was so so good. It had me in tears at times and laughing at others. Alex was the definition of a hero but suffering PTSD in silence. Aunt Lynn is the relative that every single person needs in their life. Jordan dealing with his own issues due to hearing loss. Throw in a heap of other traumatised people and one absolutely gorgeous German Shepherd who heals without fear. A heap of animal lovers with big hearts. Can't say how much I loved this book from a new author to me.

Dave Henderson's debut MM romance novel is so much more than a love story.

Alex, a former serviceman, is dealing with severe PTSD. His sweet and snarky Aunt Lynn (who is an important and absolutely wonderful part of the book) asks him to move to Brookings, WA. Here we meet the other two (yes two) male main characters. Jordan is a local veterinarian who is hearing impaired. He meets Alex via Shadow, an injured German Shepherd who literally bursts into their lives. I loved how their relationship unfolded and seeing the balance of strength play out between Alex and Jordan.

This story and these characters are all beautifully complex. The mental health and disability representation is front and center and the way they are written is done with compassion and care.

If you enjoy a diverse love story with amazing representation, the best good boy pupper, plenty of spice, and an important message, get this book!

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (4/5)

Alex & Jordan

This story pulled me in from the start and kept me hooked all the way through. While it does deal with some heavy issues, the witty and playful banter that happens throughout the story was so enjoyable and a lot of fun to read. I read through this quickly. I can't wait to read more from this author.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Tides of the Heart it´s the author's debut novel. It´s very well written, the characters are very well developed. I always suffer when some animal appears in the books, in case something bad happens to them. But Shadow is just another character, has his own role.

Alex is a veteran soldier suffering from PTSD and depression. He has panic attacks, the good thing is that he is working to overcome them. He moves to his aunt's town. One night, while having a panic attack, a dog breaks through his window (there is an explanation for this) and sneaks into the house, the poor dog gets hurt. Alex's aunt calls the local vet, Jordan.

Jordan is the local vet, he treats the dog and is attracted to Alex from the first moment.

The romance is very sweet, it goes slowly but surely. I am satisfied with the spicy scenes. I have yet to read the Christmas novella, which has the same main characters, but I'm working on it.

Looking forward to reading the second book, which stars a different couple

Alex is a vet with PTSD, lost and weighed down with guilt about losing his friend in battle.

Jordan is a vet with hearing aids who works at an animal haven, a nonprofit for animals needing help.

Shadow is the service dog who brings them together, getting injured when helping Alex. Through caring for Shadow during his recovery, Alex becomes a fixture as a volunteer, and he and Jordan bond, finding help and support with each of their struggles.

This story was uneven and not very well written. Some parts are quite good, but others are over the top. The romance is too sweet, but the love scenes are a bit rough, so it’s a strange combination.

It’s also way too long and could be tightened up to be at least 1/3 shorter. So, this is actually a 2 1/2 star book for me.

I received this ARC for free, and am glad to give it my honest review with thanks.

Alex is drowning in survivor guilt and PTSD. When his unit was ambushed in Afghanistan, his unit commander and two of his were killed. He takes it as a personal failure that he wasn't able to save them and can't find a way to move on. Nightmares fill his nights with variations of that day. While experiencing another one, he was awakened when a German Shepard crashes through his bedroom window. Now he has another thing to feel guilty for, the dog suffered wounds from the broken window and may not survive. Local vet, Jordan, comes to the rescuer, but he has demons of his own. Due to a profound hearing loss, he lives in silence. Hearing aids help, but the pain he experiences from them limits their use. They have to work closely together to save Shadow and find their way back to the world and find joy again.

This book is the first for this author and it was such a great read which made me want to keep reading. He wanted to hide away after all his suffering and adventures he has had in his short life. He may find salvation with the arrival of a dog who may help him through his new life. There will be another meeting with a vet as well. A really enjoyable read which I found difficult to put it down

A fun, fresh take on HEA M/M romance!

The main characters both have real struggles to overcome, and you get to see their growth as the story progresses. I connected with them right away, and really enjoyed their journey together.

The quaint setting of Brookings, OR gives the book a peaceful & picturesque backdrop. If you love steamy romance, animals, and close friendships, this one’s for you. It’s the perfect beach read! 🌊

Two years after his return from Afghanistan had left him with survivor's guilt and severe PTSD a wariness for failed therapists at the VA who only dispensed pills and platitudes. Alex Bennet had been about to give up. Like so many of his fellow soldiers ending it seemed the easiest way out but the aunt he adored had begged him to move to the Ortegon coast with her and try a private physician instead of one from the VA. In the middle of the night in his rented cabin during an extreme PTSD episode that had him screaming a large German Shepherd jumped through the glass in his bedroom window. The dog’s injuries were severe enough to be life-threatening, but he still calmed when Alex approached him as he tried to stop the bleeding with wraps of T-shirts. A panic call to his aunt marshaled the forces of a local vet who drove to him and had an ambulance van on the way. Jordan Williams arrived to assess the damages and was impressed with the way Alex had tried to stop the bleeding and get help. A long surgery and several transfusions to combat his malnutrition as well as his injuries sees the beautiful animal coming around.
Jordan has his own trauma to deal with. Losing most of his hearing when he was nine, and putting up with constant bullying at school because of his hearing aids and the pain that they caused his ears. His feelings of inadequacy and Alex’s PTSD made them an unlikely pair but the German Shepherd brings them together. His chip identified Shadow as a service animal, but the owner was far away in Chicago. She had purchased Shadow as a service dog for her father, a marine also with PTSD. As they were estranged, she had no idea where her father was or what Shadow was doing in Oregon.
Alex becomes a volunteer at the clinic and takes on Shadow’s care and rehabilitation and a service animal is exactly what Alex needs. Jordan and Alex become closer every day working at the clinic and taking care of this amazing dog. Shadow recognizes when Alex is going into an episode or starting a panic attack and helps to bring him out of it. And yes they all have an HEA.
This book is beautifully and compassionately written and addresses several issues near and dear to my heart – approximately 22 veterans end their life every day because they aren’t getting the help they need. Good therapy is essential, but nothing can take the place of a specially-trained service animal. If this book speaks to you, there are a number of very good charities that will help match a vet with a service dog.

The basic storyline of this book is well laid out in the blurb. The parts that flesh out the story are the beautiful parts. Alex, lost in himself and suffering from PTSD, has his life irrevocably altered when he meets Shadow, the German Shepherd who comes crashing into his life, and through Shadow, he meets the veterinarian Jordan, the man who will become his rock and support as Alex struggles his way through the memories, nightmares, and panic attacks associated with his PTSD.
When they meet, Alex and Jordan quickly connect, and Jordan soon becomes the one to hold, calm, and ground Alex when life overwhelms him, with Shadow there for additional support. As Alex works with his counselor, spends time with Jordan before and during clinic hours, volunteers at the animal clinic to learn to care for Shadow as he heals, and develops friendships for a new found family, he learns to cope better with his PTSD, and finds his way closer to the man he was before he went to war. At the same time, under Alex’s influence, Jordan goes from a recluse in his time away from the clinic to a man who enjoys the company of others, and his hatred and resentment toward his hearing disability and his need for hearing aids slowly shifts to acceptance, and at times, appreciation for the benefits he receives from them.
As Alex recounts memories and relives his nightmares, as Shadow is threatened, and unexpected events draw three new people to town who become directly impacted by Alex and Shadow, there are some emotional times and tears may threaten or flow. As Alex and Jordan explore aspects of their love together, we get spicy times, too.
These characters are complex and there are lots of changes and challenges for them to navigate. The descriptions of what Alex goes through with his PTSD, whether as part of his daily life or one of his nightmares or panic attack episodes, the effect long term, and the help received from a service animal, helps give the reader a small window into what many of our service members endure when returning home, as well as first responders and survivors of the shootings happening in our society today. It has some thought-provoking elements, too. But basically, it is a tale of two men, each with their own doubts and uncertainties, finding what they are missing in the other person, each finding the other half of themselves. An interesting read.
I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

Dave Henderson absolutely knocks this story out of the park. The way that these men help each other through their personal trauma to finding love is stunning. I knew this story would be heavy but the evolution of their separate live and becoming one is truly amazing.

This story is heavy, yet playful and sexy. Jordan and Alex feel less than whole. They have been broken down by circumstances, both of which were out of their control but that have marked their heart with a stain of unworthiness. Jordan is a veterinarian who experienced congenital hearing loss as an adolescent and despite his hearing aids, he still feels like he isn't fully apart of the "regular" world. He struggles each and everyday with the impact his hearing loss has on his life even with a supportive and found family, he feels alone until a late night phone call changes everything. Alex is a veteran who has PTSD and he is struggling to survive his day to day. He's in Brookings on the advice of his Aunt Linda or Aunt Lynn as she's affectionately known around town to build a life and regain his sense of self. Through the throws of a PTSD induced nightmare a German Shepherd literally crashed into his life and with the help of Aunt Lynn, she connects Jordan and Alex.

The soul connection is almost instant, yes much of it is physical but it's also emotional. Both men are selfless in their actions, ready to jump in help without a single question and full of complete compassion. Like souls that appear broken gravitate toward one another but it is not without it's hardships.

They work so hard to communicate and to be there fully for one another as much as they can. Yes, they have the support but the work has to be done between the two of them. The physical is there and it comes in powerful way and chemistry jumps off the page. It may seem quick to many given he timeframe of events but this book is the definition of if you know you know.

This story will absolutely touch your heart. You will laugh, cry, and root for everyone in this story. This is a well earned and truly deserving HEA.

Poignant, hurmorous and romantic gay story about two guys who discover they need each other
Easily a 3.75 star-story. It was very well written and so sensitively told that there were parts where I needed tissues. Alex Bennett is suffering from PTSD as a result of a horrendous and deadly ambush on his Army unit in Afghanistan for which he blames himself for the deaths of his best friend and others. He moved to Brookings, Oregon to be near his aunt Linda aka “Lynn” and her recommended therapist, Dr. Martin. A series of events brings him to the Veterinarian practice of Dr. Jordan Williams who treats the star of this tale, Shadow, a therapy German Shepherd. Shadow had somehow gotten from California to Oregon. But why? What happened to the man he was caring for? Dr. Jordan suffers his own trials as a deaf man whose hearing aids cause inflammation and infection to his ears so he hates them. He loves treating animals because he does not need to wear them to mend their hurts. No conversation needed. There were so many funny moments, especially revolving around Alex’s diet and resultant passing of gas. Saying with affection, only a male writer would see the humor in that!
Overall, this was an enjoyable story but I think the author had a lot to say and tried to get it all into this one book. He dealt with PTSD, deafness, connections between Linda and Alex and that between Alex and Jordan as well as the animal clinic, its staff and its impact on the people and community. All legitimate parts of this tale, but segments bordered on an abundance of detail which were not necessary, in my mind. After reading the author’s bio, I think I understand better his need for so much emotion and detail in this story. I volunteered to review an ARC of it through Gay Romance Reviews.

I loved the blurb and the story line is actually very good and could have made an amazing book but the writing is letting it down.

Alex is suffering from survivors guilt and PTSD after a mission went horrifying wrong. Jordan suffers from severe hearing loss, hates his condition and finds solace in his work as a vet, working for a large non-profit animal clinic.

When a lost service dog ends up badly wounded at Alex's house, Alex and Jordan start to bond. I love how Jordan describes the fact that they both carry significant baggage as a positive, they are helping and supporting each other, not bringing each other down.
They do fit well together and from their romance point of view, the story is low angst/drama.

The author describes both, the PTSD and the hearing disability, very well. It comes over without pity or over dramatic scenes.

The problem with the book is that it is far too long, it is very descriptive to a point of being overly flowery. It's written in 3rd POV, normally my favourite, but it is lacking on dialogue, it makes reading very difficult.

The intimate scenes come over quite mechanical and they do lack heat.
There are also some plot holes, the dog's original owner's back story for example and also Shadow's behaviour at the beginning, I would think a trained PTSD dog would behave differently to alert.

I must admit, I went through the last 1/5 fairly fast as I just wanted to get over with the book.

A BEAUTIFUL, HEARTFELT DEBUT!💕

“In your arms' unyielding strength, a haven I discovered, Within your heart's tender warmth, a feeling of home, uncovered. Through trials that tested my spirit, my true self emerged clear, With you, for life's long journey, I face without fear.”

The premise of the story was articulate and very deep regarding PTSD and self acceptance where three broken souls in need of healing find solace and peace in each other- Alex, Jordan and their service dog Shadow…

A steamy, sweet slow burn with lots of healing and love with a supportive found family of community members like Alex’s aunt and the clinic staff that will always help whenever help is required!

I loved the comical way Jordan named his earpieces that he hated with a passion and later accepted with Alex’s help.

Shadow was a beautiful soul that had so much love and patience and support regarding Alex’s PTSD and the veterinary staff…

Their dynamic was surprising and fun with lots of banter and flirting and sexy times!

A lot of tear inducing, heart rendering moments are in store so be forewarned and keep the tissues nearby!

Three sweet epilogues follow which spans 3, 6 and 12 months describing their progress and a gorgeous surprise after the beautiful ending!

I voluntarily received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

This book deals with war PTSD as well as Childhood trauma as the main characters dealt with their past. The story is basically about the MC (Alex) with PTSD who has moved to small town Oregon as his Aunt urged him to. Here a number of things happen.

During one of his nightmares Shadow, a service dog jumps through the window of his bedroom and is badly injured. That leads to meeting Jordan, the town Vet who has issues because of low hearing and the trauma of having been bullied as a youngster. There is a also a therapist who reduces the trauma of having prior experiences of seeking help for PTSD.

Time together between the two MCs, the support of the Aunt and the therapist leads to both MCs relieving (dealing well with) of the prior experiences. In addition, Michael, the son of Alex's best friend whom he had been unable to save comes with his mother to first visit and then live in Oregon and Alex become an adopted Uncle. We find a HEA with supports in place and both Jordan and Alex coping well with their pasts.

A good author has me crying for both good and bad events and this book was that type of book.

The ARC book came from Gay Romance Readers with the promise of a voluntary honest review.

Thunderbolt, Dr. DooDooHead, toxic cloud of doom, protein fart machine, ear-resistable, Eggzilla, WoofDoc

This is a study in profound loss, life-seizing grief, crippling guilt and PTSD, forgiveness, acceptance, and the power of unwavering friendship and love. Be sure to have tissues or a hankie handy. It's the most realistic feeling book I've read when it comes to these raw emotions and dealing with them.

Alex, a war combat veteran, is a recluse who feels vulnerable and broken because of his severe PTSD and panic attacks. At his Aunt Lynn's urging, Alex moves to Brookings, OR where she also lives to help support him emotionally so he can heal. A German shepherd named Shadow literally crashes into Alex's and Jordan's lives. Jordan is the town's kind and compassionate veterinarian who treats Shadow's injuries.

The folk of Brookings are all wonderful, loving, warmly accepting, and are extremely likeable. Many of the side characters play significant roles in the story. The visuals are vividly descriptive and majestically scenic. The storylines are intricately woven to create a tapestry of this narrative.

I immensely enjoyed reading it, finding it enthralling and satisfying. I ardently recommend this.

This is a debut book from Dave Henderson and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Alex is a former soldier who is suffering from PTSD. He’s moved to Brookings to try a new therapist who specializes in PTSD. His loving and supportive aunt is his family and he is hoping this therapist will help him.
What he doesn’t know is a German Shepherd and a veterinarian are going to help him on his journey to healing.
Without giving up all the deets, know that Shadow gets gravely injured and Jordan comes to the rescue. Jordan has hearing loss and wears hearing aids. He’s always felt different and numerous times removes his aids to disassociate himself from the world around him. He’s felt like people don’t actually know him and what he goes through.
In caring for Shadow traumatic injuries they start to slowly start healing their wounds. This story was good and sweet. I especially liked the drawing of Shadow in each chapter. They were beautiful done.
So be prepared for some scary moments in this story. They will take you by complete surprise but the ending will have your heart full of love.

3.5 stars okay book with mixed thoughts in some scenes.
A debut book by the author with this story which the series continues with a follow up novel.

Alex 32 was a returning soldier with PTSD after his mission went wrong. He seeks another therapist for help after returning to his family's home.
At the start a dog enters the scene which didn't make sense at the strange dog action.
Dr Jordan had a hearing disability, was the attending vet trying to help the dog.
Shadow was a 3 yrs lost service dog that burst into their lives.
This book is a gorgeous story about overcoming difficulties which I loved. The writing I found okay for a debut novel and the author would only get better. A number of repeated information throughout the book I didn't really like.
I loved the picture of Shadow in each chapter posing.
I really liked Jordan and Alex’s banner and chemistry as they got to know each other. A good ending to the book for their romance.

Dave Henderson’s Tides of the Heart is a story that instantly grabbed my attention. I am always eager to dive into emotional stories that promise to have me gripped throughout, and such is what this book promised. Unfortunately, I struggled from the start.

While there was a good story hidden within the pages, I had to search hard to find it. Between the choppy writing (from perspective and tense changes to misused words, along with lots of typos) and the forced story (there were so many things that made no sense and happened purely for certain interactions to play out), I struggled. I wanted to enjoy it, but each time I picked it up I found it harder to get into. I feel it needed a good edit to reach the bones of the story that had the potential to hit hard. As it was, it felt like a draft for something much more promising.

Many have clearly enjoyed it, which suggests I am just being extra harsh, but this one - sadly - did not work for me.

Alex's survivor guilt and PTSD create such a poignant backdrop for his journey, and the introduction of Shadow as both a literal and metaphorical broken creature is beautifully symbolic. The way he feels guilt over the dog's injuries adds another layer to his struggle, highlighting how deeply he internalizes responsibility.

Jordan’s own challenges with hearing loss complement Alex's journey. Their shared need to overcome personal demons makes their connection even more profound. It sounds like their relationship could be a source of healing for both of them, as they navigate their pain and learn to communicate in ways that transcend words.

The dual exploration of trauma—both from Alex's military experience and Jordan's struggles with communication—promises rich character development and a moving narrative. I can imagine the moments of tension, vulnerability, and ultimately, hope that will arise as they work together to save Shadow and find their paths forward.
