The Jilted Exes' Club #1

Good Pucking Luck

Hayes
Proposing to my first boyfriend at a hockey game wasn’t my smartest move. Not only does said boyfriend walk out on me, but the whole stupid thing goes viral, and it turns out the man I was dating has too many boyfriends to count. Internet fame has crowned me a member of the Jilted Exes’ Club, a name I’d do anything to escape.

One thing’s for I’m not making the same mistake again. No more boyfriends, just easy hookups. And I’ll start with this gorgeous catch in Seattle. The only problem…he’s a god in bed, and I’m an inexperienced mess.

Rylan
After a night with Hayes, I play some of the best games of my career. It’s meant to be a one-and-done deal, but when I find out he also lives in LA and doesn’t want anything serious, I see an opportunity.

Hayes wants experience. I want my good-luck charm to help me win the cup.

The media would go wild over a pro hockey player dating a member of the Jilted Exes’ Club—a distraction neither of us needs. We want this to stay simple. Easy. No strings, no falling in love.

Except I’m pretty sure I’ve already fallen. After all Hayes has been through, how do I get him to entrust his heart to someone who’s only ever been labeled a player on and off the ice?

Maybe I should’ve trusted my gut, when, three chapters in, I was already annoyed with this book. The premise was fantastic but the story I got was—everything considered—as lame as pretty much everything I’ve read of Riley Hart’s more recent work.

The romance itself was kinda fun, especially Rylan was fun to read.

“I actually wanted to talk to you about something before you jumped in my arms and superglued your lips to mine.”
“Ugh!” I drop my head back against the couch. […] “I’ve never done that before either.” “Most people aren’t as irresistible as me, so it’s understandable.”

Yeah, he’s kinda cocky, but in a good and charming way. *lol And it was hot, too.

What was totally missing for me was getting excited for the side characters that will inevitably get their own book. Sorry to say that but I couldn’t care less. I also had the feeling that inventing this whole plot (the little of it there was) around the Jilted Exes’ Club was only to introduce random characters to write the next book about.

And can authors please start to think of something new, now that practically everyone has their “Pucking” titles in their backlist? It’s getting old, for real.

Good Pucking Luck is book one in The Jilted Exes’ Club by Riley Hart. When I saw the cover of this book, I knew I had to read it. Wow, I loved these two so much. This was sweet and fun and steamy and just wonderful!

Hayes Rockwell is the only son to the owners of the world wide Rockwell hotel chain. Hayes has always been a little awkward, not really having a normal childhood. He’s never really had friends. So after being in his first long term relationship, he thought he was in love. Unfortunately, he chose a hockey game with a kiss cam to propose to his boyfriend. Only to discover that he was one of many boyfriends of his now EX! The video became viral and Hayes becomes famous in the worst of ways.

Rylan Pierce is twenty six years old and plays defenseman for the Los Angeles Rebels, a pro hockey team. The very same team that Hayes chose to propose to his now ex-boyfriend at. When Rylan and Hayes randomly meet one night in a bar, and have a one night stand, Rylan’s next game is the best of his career. He’s found his good luck charm. After what happened to Hayes, he wants nothing to do with relationships. Neither does Rylan. So they agree to keep meeting up for the rest of the season. But no one can know. Because if word got out that Hayes, the man who was jilted on screen at a hockey game, and one of the players that was playing that night, are hooking up, the media would have a field day. This is only until the end of the season. Then they’ll go their own ways. No strings. No regrets. You know that’s not what’s going to happen!

First, I need to give a shout out to Rylan’s best friend, the goalie on the team, Mads. I adored him. I loved Rylan and Hayes so much. Hayes was adorable. I felt so bad for all of his insecure feelings when it came to love. His ex really did a number on him. He was so cute trying to be a player. And Rylan...the most cinnamon roll of all cinnamon rolls ever! He was so sweet and gooey inside. And he had it so bad for Hayes. This really was such a fun, sweet story. I can’t wait to read the next book, The Marriage Policy which focuses on Donovan, another of the men who were hurt by Hayes’ ex.

This book really has it all. Spice. Banter. Rylan Pierce.

I can’t remember the last time a book made me laugh this hard. I was fully kicking my feet, giggling, smiling like an idiot the entire time. Hayes was so relatable and their romance? Completely swoon-worthy. Total comfort read that I can’t wait to revisit again and again.

I’m officially a Riley Hart fan now. Someone hand me her entire backlist because I need everything she’s ever written immediately.

2.5 stars. I wish Riley Hart wasn't such an inconsistent writer. Every time I read a new book of hers I hope it will be as good as The endgame, Endless stretch of blue or Of sunlight and stardust, but especially the last two years have been mediocre or worse (looking at you, Risk the fall!).
This book is pure fluff, and while there's nothing wrong with that when done well, this was really nothing new. The hockey was interchangeable for every other sport out there, the hooking up for good luck has been done lots of times, the third-act thingie felt like an afterthought and these guys had zero originality to their personality.

We know next to nothing about both guys: Hayes works (but what he does exactly as the heir to a hotel empire is not specified) and finally makes some friends out of the other Jilted Exes during the story, but he has no hobbies, he doesn't go out with colleagues etc. No idea what he does when he's at home, except work. And Rylan plays hockey, is always happy and has a cat. That's it. Please, give me more than that.

Apart from that, it just felt too repetitive. Hayes was incredibly insecure, and while I understand to a point why, it came up in every conversation they had and it got old. I also didn't get why he proposed to Malcolm in the first place, but hey, the author clearly needed some catchy theme for this series.

Maybe I'm too harsh, but there are so many great hockey romances out there and this just isn't it. Go read some Rachel Reid, Tal Bauer or E.L. Massey.

DNF @ 39% - yeah, as much I love Rylan, and I really do love him, this isn’t going to work for me anymore. Not a Hayes fan and I can see how this is just going to be repetitive until the end.

Hayes and Rylan are both 26. Hayes had a real unusual upbringing that has made him socially awkward. His family is wealthy, they own hotels and they traveled a lot. He was homeschooled and he didn't make friends in his parents' social circle. He's very inexperienced sexually, he had two hook ups before being with his boyfriend Malcolm. He went all in with his relationship with Malcolm, and unfortunately Malcolm ended up being a user who was dating multiple people at the same time and was mentally and emotionally abusive to his partners, putting them down and blaming everything on them that went wrong in their relationships. Hayes proposed to Malcolm publicly at a hockey game, and Malcolm rejected him. It quickly came out after the failed proposal was covered in Media that multiple guys for dating Malcolm at the same time. Hayes and the other exes have been labeled part of the jilted exes club and have been infamous and hounded to tell their story, so he's been miserable since. Hayes is definitely relationship shy now. No more relationships for him.

Enter Rylan! Rylan is an NHL player, and he was actually playing in the game where the failed proposal happened. He never paid attention to the news coverage though. He meets Hayes one night at one of his family's hotels, since Hayes works in the hotel. They talk and have a one night stand. Afterwards, Rylan has great luck and one of the best games of his career. Then his luck wears off, and he starts having some bad luck, not playing his best. He's superstitious and wants to recapture that luck.

Safety alert - Rylan hooks up with someone else, thinking that just getting laid will help him recapture his luck. It doesn't. It wasn't cheating, Rylan and Hayes had a one-night stand themselves, that was all they had at that point. It's not on page, it's just referred to.

Rylan and Hayes meet again, and this time they realize who the other person is. They talk and decide to keep hooking up, exclusively, for the rest of the hockey season. It's convenient for them both because they both want a casual arrangement. Rylan is superstitious and wants the good sex and good luck he gets from being with Hayes. Time passes and feelings start creeping in.

This was a refreshing book. Rylan really liked Hayes from the beginning, it was cute how he was so into the reserved guy. He found everything about him cute and sexy. Hayes had to work on himself and his insecurities to be ready for a relationship after what he went through with Malcolm. But I liked how they genuinely liked each other, they were a good fit for each other. I really liked that Hayes and Rylan had such a effortless connection with each other, they got along well, they communicated well. And I really liked that the conflict in the book wasn't really between Rylan and Hayes. It was never "I'm ashamed of you", "I don't have feelings for you" type of angst, that one moment of relationship doubt they had was really Rylan just being genuinely superstitious. Rylan was such a nice guy and had a good relationship with his family. I liked his relationship with Mads too. I hope Mads gets a book too.

I like how playful they are. I like how they can be light-hearted and talk during sex and outside of sex. Sometimes authors have unrealistic amounts of talking during sex, but this book haf a good balance of playful and meaningful communication in a natural way.

Some notable moments:

"It’s not until I hear, “Wow. I had no idea you liked hockey so much,” from Anthony behind me that I remember I’m not alone. That I’m yelling at the television, jumping up and down with three other people in the room. I immediately sober. You can’t judge a book by its cover and all, but I’m pretty sure I don’t look like the world’s biggest hockey fan, and I can’t remember if I ever told them that I only went to that first game because Malcolm liked it. “Yeah…it’s…new.” Ever since I started banging the guy who just scored."

"His hold on me tightens, and I wish I never had to leave this spot either, Rylan’s pecs against my cheek, his breath in my hair. “We’re going to make this work,” I tell him. “Damn right we are. You’re mine, cutie. And I don’t ever plan to let you go.” Possessive Rylan is totally fucking hot."

"“Mom. Can you grab Dad real quick too?” “Sure, honey,” she tells him, but her gaze doesn’t leave mine. It very much says, You fuck with my son, and we’re going to have a problem."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Books that make me smile are among my favourite things to read and this one from Riley did that from start to finish.

There's something really lovely about reading a character who thinks there's something wrong with them, because they've had a shitty past boyfriend experience, finding someone who thinks they're the greatest thing in the world.

So it was for poor Haynes in this one. He'd been publicly humiliated by his gaslighting and cheating boyfriend after a failed proposal at an ice hockey game, and the internet had turned him into a meme, so you could totally understand his reluctance to get involved again.

But a one-night stand while on a work trip to Seattle sees him cross paths with the giant Labrador that is Rylan Pierce, defensive player for the LA Rebels, an a hot encounter that sparks the start of something special.

I loved Rylan, he's got a heart of gold, he's relentlessly optimistic, a natural cheerleader and, once he finds him again, the biggest fan and supporter of Hayes, his good pucking luck charm.

This really is the classic opposites attract romance, with a shy and awkward loner finding the person who can bring them out of their shell and help them on the road to a self-improving journey.

Rylan doesn't provide any magic dick but what he does, is let Hayes see himself through Rylan's eyes, and that man is someone special, not a loser, and so eventually Hayes begins to believe in himself again.

The banter between them is on point, it's a very funny book, with lots of smoking hot sex too, and the growth and friendship which develops in each young man as they carry on their "sex only" escapades, is lovely to read.

This is a lovely opener to the new series, we've met two of the guys who I suspect will be having their stories told next, as part of the Jilted Exes Club, and I'm very much interested in both of them. There's a lovely bunch of secondary characters both at the Rebels and also with Rylan's parents, who are total sweethearts too.

“You like that? You like me talking about what I want to do to you? How I’m going to eat your ass until you’re panting and writhing, and then I’ll pull back and open you up with my fingers, until you’re begging for my cock.”

Alrighty. This is what I am talking about Riley Hart. A none emotional, but good fucking time MM romance book. Nothing too serious, all just super funny and super hot, I love that shit. This very much reminded me of the writing style they used in The Hook-Up Mix Up and Playing Games which are two very good and very loved books by me. I love that, thank you. I have been having mixed feelings with some of their other books but Im glad we are back on track. I found this no drama, just funny smut book to be delightful. Hayes and Rylan were so cute and what happped to Hayes was fucked up but seeing him move on and become himself and grow was great and Rylan is just a golden retriever who wants to lick Hayes from head to toe and he does. Anyways its a super fast and super fun read and Tim Paige did a great job, love that man. I am kinda dumb that I bought this the day it came out on Audible, I had been waiting, but the next I look on Hoopla for a book and its there. Fine Riley take my 8 bucks, you deserve it for this. I know this isnt much of a review, but like none of my reviews are. Its a vibe, go read it if you like the two books I mentioned.

Oooh Riley Hart has a new book series - The Jilted Exes' Club. So come read it with me 😍

Hayes - innocent, naive , particular and RICH has gotten scammed by his first ever boyfriend and almost fiancée Malcolm. Almost Fiancée because when Hayes publicly proposes at an ice Hockey game and Malcolm flees … well it all comes out that Malcolm is a sleezeball with multiple boyfriends.

Rylan is a professional ice hockey player. A defenseman for the Rebels, a position I know nothing about no matter how much ice hockey M/M romances I consume.

“What’s so interesting on your phone?” I ask Mads.
“That poor fucking guy who got humiliated when he proposed at our game is still all over the internet.”

Rylan grew up in vastly different circumstances to Hayes and is currently loving life.

They first meet in an empty/ closed for the night bar at one of Hayes family’s hotels. They don’t recognise each other.

“I’ll have you know, you’re looking at a self-proclaimed slut.”

Hayes has had a shitty few months and a shitty day today. He doesn’t recognise the famous hockey player in front of him. Rylan finds Hayes intriguing. I’m loving this whole interaction and silently cheering on Hayes self decided slut era .

“here’s a walking sex god offering to make me come, and I’m not sprinting toward him like an Olympic track star?”

I’m not sure how they make sexy times so freaking adorable but far out they are both endearing themselves to me. I can totally relate to Hayes in this moment.

This is supposed to be a one night only thing, although Rylan is definitely tempted for more.

Hayes finds out Rylan is a hockey player from the game of his attempted proposal and gets the wrong idea. Like .. really crazy wrong idea but these few months have really taken a toll on poor Hayes. When he shows up unexpectedly at Rylans door - seriously how does someone famous not have better security - Rylan assumes the worst too.

“You tricked me!” we both say at the same time.”

How is it every interaction these two have give me such dopey smiles and pleasure.

“How does one proposition a guy for consistent good-luck sex for the rest of the hockey season? ”

Hayes and Rylan come to an agreement- six months of exclusive non-relationship hooking up with friendship included. Umm guys that kinda sounds like a relationship with an expiry date. But Hayes is commitment phobic now and Rylan is convinced Hayes has some sort of magic cum that will help him him win the Stanley cup so it’s on.

Donovan and Anthony are also some of Malcom’s jilted exes. Hayes cautiously and curiously meets up with them and slowly forms a friendship.

Poor Hayes, he has such bad self esteem and a lonely childhood / adulthood with no friends. This whole shit with Malcolm has really battered his self esteem and ability to trust.

“What are you doing?”
“Cuddling. I’m sure you’ve heard of it.”
“I feel like that’s a boyfriend thing.”
“Are you trying to ask me out? Because you seem to be stuck on that boyfriend thing and how we’re not that.”

Oh my gosh, these two! Acting all boyfriendy like but refusing to acknowledge the truth that’s right there in front of them. They are opening up to each other , it’s not just the insane sexual chemistry.

And when Rylan and Hayes both internally come to the realisation they want more , they hold back on saying it because they think the other doesn’t want a relationship.

Ok wait Rylan , that charming, genuine sex god of a hockey player came clean about his crush and now they are boyfriends. Yay!!

Hayes comes to some self realisations about his self worth shouldn’t be wrapped up in his relationship.

They also declare their love for one another. Awwww I just love this couple and I love their happy ever after.

“My sexy boyfriend who is totally in love with me is about to give up that good dick. Of course I’m excited.”

This book is a dopamine hit, Riley hart - you’ve done it again. Love this book, inhaled it in one sitting. I have a feeling I know who the next book will be about.

Audio: 5 stars for Tim Paige. Audio can also be found on Everand.

Book: 2.5 stars, but rounding up

Eh. This book was alright, when they weren't always hooking up it was cute... but that was few and far between.

I was hoping for more with this book, especially since Riley Hart has written some amazing books, but this one just fell flat to me. The Jilted Ex's Club felt forced to me, this could have been a standalone book without having to make it a series...

Not sure if I will continue with the series when it comes out, but who knows, I have been known to read things I don't love haha.

Another unnecessary hockey romance. Same banal lines, puns, jokes, cuteness, confusions, hesitations, that have been used over and over again in every sports romance ever written... Nothing, absolutely nothing new.

Yes, she is not a consistent writer and some of her books are really bad. But I had higher expectations from the author who created a masterpiece like Of Sunlight and Stardust, wrote the Blackcreek series, The Endgame, Broken Pieces series... It's a shame really.

I give 2 stars for the trees that will be wasted to print this book.

This was no literary masterpiece, nor did it claim to be. This was just light, sweet, no brainer fun. It definitely started good but got a bit repetitive by about 60-70%, especially Rylan and Hayes' inner monologues, conversations, and dirty talk.. so I think it worked well as a shorter novel.

Getting serious now, what stood out for me was the narrative about the effects of gaslighting (from an ex) on a person's self esteem and ability to feel emotionally safe and confident in future relationships. It was effectively done in a lighter way which helped to not alienate readers who don't like heavy themes in their books.

Riley showed this through the character of Hayes, who hooks up with Rylan in an attempt to reclaim his self-worth, learn to trust again, and rewrite the shitty narrative that his horrible ex, Malcolm wrote for him.

Yes, it was super cookie cutter light, but the message was loud and clear, and I hope that it lands wherever it's needed amongst readers.

Cute and fun at times, but mostly predictable and a bit repetitive. I liked Rylan and enjoyed his banter and jokes. He made me smile but came across as a bit too perfect. As to Hayes, there were just too many internal monologues about his insecurities and Malcolm.
The friendship between Hayes and the two other members of the Jilted Exes club felt forced. They had nothing in common aside from Malcolm, and there weren't enough scenes of them together to make the friendship believable. We were told they had a great time together, but it was never shown.

I did not know I could feel secondhand embarrassment the likes of which I felt when Malcolm covered his head and rejected Hayes' proposal while the entire arena watched via the jumbotron.

Then for the jilting to go viral and have it come out that Malcolm had 82,000 boyfriends and he's the unlucky fuck who thought he was special💀💀💀

Yeah, way to set the stage for all his insecurities going forward. If I'd not read the first part, I'd have been irritated by his two steps forward, one step back shuffle for the duration of relationship.

Rylan was fighting an uphill battle from the jump. Sweet guy who just had the misfortune of meeting his person shortly after they'd been fucked over by another.

He carried it well, though, and I'm surprised none of their issues came from Rylan giving up. The greenest of flags.

I don't know why I knew I wanted emotional slow burns and hadn't considered Riley Hart. I cut my teeth on her books when I started reading MM romance. This felt like coming home.

This had no right being as cute as it was! I love me a one night stand turned more and this gave me everything I needed.

Rylan is seriously the best. He's witty, the perfect amount of cocky, and he knows exactly how to calm down Hayes. I loved their grumpy x sunshine dynamic and how Hayes can let his soft dom side out.

These two were perfect from the start and I'm kicking myself for not reading this sooner!

"Something about him makes me want to do nothing but alternate between laughing, smiling, and wanting to come."

“Has anyone told you that you’re the most annoying person on the face of the planet?” I cross my arms. “Has anyone told you that you’re cute as shit?”

“I don’t understand the way you make me feel…like I’m more.” “You deserve to feel like you’re everything.”

THIS BOOK WAS SO DELIGHTFUL AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ IT! If you are in the mood for a low angst read with the PERFECT amount of spice and swoon, you MUST check out Good Pucking Luck. I had so many people recommend this book to me, and yup, I loved it, right up my alley. Top tier hockey romance, and for sure one of my top reads of the year.

Good Pucking Luck follows Hayes and Rylan from a one night stand to a friends with benefits situationship where they both inevitably fall HARD. Prickly Hayes has some baggage from a (admittedly horrible) past relationship, and I love how Rylan is able to slowly break down his walls and build up his confidence. And OMFG, Rylan is book boyfriend GOLD. He's so sweet and funny, so much goofy golden retriever goodness who is DOWN BAD for Hayes. Their chemistry is evident from the first time they meet, the spice is EXCELLENT, and the pacing is perfect. There's minimal miscommunication, no third act breakup, it's just GOOD. What else could you ask for?

IN addition to all that, I HIGHLY recommend listening to the audiobook for this one, as Tim Page has such distinct voices for the characters that I literally had to go check to make sure it wasn't duet narration. I was coming up with excuses to walk around the house listening to it, I didn't want to stop. By FAR my favorite Riley Hart book I've read yet, and I'll definitely check out the rest of the series (I'm very excited about the next couple!). The hype is real my friends!

***ARC Review***

This is my honest and voluntary review for the ARC I received.

This book is totally captivating and will leave you with a smile on your face by the end of it!

Hayes proposes to his boyfriend, Malcolm, at a hockey game and it doesn’t go well. Some devastating things come to light and Hayes goes viral for all the reasons he doesn’t want to do so. Rylan is the right defenseman for the LA Rebels. The pair have an unexpected meeting one night and hit things off. There is raw chemistry between both men and they just click. Afterwards, Rylan is convinced that Hayes is “good pucking luck,” so they agree to have a no strings attached entanglement.

It was really sweet watching Hayes open up to Rylan (and the other members of the Jilted Exes’ Club) little by little. Hayes is adorable and Rylan is definitely good for him. Rylan is so supportive and honest. He’s a good guy to have in your corner. He does have his superstitions, but that’s hockey players for you. Hayes feels things in a bigger way that he realizes, and it was nice watching him figure out how to navigate all of the complex emotions of being human.

I loved seeing Hayes become a fan of the sport and I was thrilled when the two MCs shift from friends with benefits to something more. (I lowkey loved Rylan’s parents, Julia and Mace). This book flows well and is very charming. There’s a lot of things that Hayes has to work through after his terrible experience with Malcolm, but he comes into his own and grows a lot emotionally in this book. Rylan grows as well (with a little bit of help from Mads) and you can’t help rooting for him and Hayes to work out. While Rylan and Hayes have different backgrounds/life experiences, they have a lot in common. The couple do exactly that as they skate into their super sweet HEA.

I’m excited to see what happens with the other members of the Jilted Exes’ Club, Donovan and Anthony. Until then, go out and grab a copy of this book!

I liked the cover?
And magic cum 😂
It's a fun and sexy story but even the sexy parts started to get repetitive and I was super bored.
There just isn't enough plot or anything going on.
There isn't enough Hockey 😭
I liked their character development and how those two were so good for each other.
Pass on the other jilted lovers....

I heard the words ✨️Riley Hart✨️ and ✨️hockey✨️ and I knew I'd be in for a treat. And I was 100% correct. GOOD PUCKING LUCK was such a feel-good love story. All the romcom feels, for real.

Hayes experiences the most embarrassing moment of his life and decides to avoid relationships forever. He never plans on Rylan.

Rylan, the d-man for the LA Rebels, stumbles upon his good luck charm - now he just needs to convince Hayes to keep this thing going. Who knew that Hayes had *magic cum* 😂😂 hockey players are very superstitious.

Thus begins Rylan & Hayes. A study of when cocky confidence meets awkward second guessing. These two have major chemistry. Like 💥boom💥 super major chemistry. They're super cute, ridiculously clueless, and VERY into each other. But it's "just super casual. " 👀

There was just so much I liked about this story. The pages were fIying fast while getting to meet the other Jilted Exes and Mads the goalie. And PUCKY!

I loved how Rylan was happy to be Hayes' hype man. Who doesn't love when the smokin' hot hockey player falls first?

A must-read for fans of hockey romance.

Riley starts another series guaranteed to be enjoyable and engaging. I can't wait for book 2! Eric & Donovan, maybe? Will Mads get a book? Will Malcom get his comeuppance? I look forward to finding out!!!

GOOD PUCKING LUCK will be available on Decmeber 4th. Is it on your tbr?
