This review will be shorter than usual because I broke my elbow and have one hand in a cast.

I read this because I remember reading a later book in the series, The Warrior Returns , featuring Amalric's sister, Rali, as the narrator. I don't think I ever read The Far Kingdoms itself, so I decided to go back and give it a try. I don't regret this, but it didn't do much for me either.

In many ways, this is a generic fantasy quest novel. My younger self probably would have loved it, as I cut my teeth on Modesitt's Recluce books or Eddings' Belgariad. This is in that same mould. Indeed, Amalric comes off as a Marty Stu in some ways, or at least a more mature version of Harry Potter. Everything just works out for him, and his only flaw is trusting too much.

This book is progressive, but only in very clear-cut, male-gazing ways. Amalric becomes an abolitionist—low bar, that. He can acknowledge that women are as capable as men, yet he still objectifies them, even his sister. And of course, she is a lesbian, but only in the most Amazonian way of portraying it. Lots of discussion of loins and sexytimes and whatnot.

The plot is episodic in nature and fairly predictable in overall notes and character development. That doesn't diminish the potential for enjoyment, but don't expect too much from it.

Fun for nostalgia purposes. Not all that interesting beyond that.

A not-too-bad adventure story with not quite enough women. BUT the story starts with the *hero* using magic to roofie a sex worker. Then the second hero saves him from facing any consequences, thus cementing their friendship. And he decides that was a bad idea, but mostly because it was illegal and he could have gotten in trouble, not because taking someone's ability to consent away is abhorrent. Yuck. And this was written in the 90s, and not the 1890s. I couldn't get past it. I guess he treats all the other beautiful women who fall at his feet better. But ... nope.

A mythic tale, it calls itself, and it is, and delightful and full. The compleat fantasy adventure tale (albeit a 90s one, acceptable to me as a feminist). A naive young merchant’s son hooks up with a mysterious stranger and they make several voyages in search of the fabled far kingdoms. There are some very interesting characters, and I liked the culture of Amalric’s native land. It’ll be interesting to see how the sequels mesh with this book.

This book was an interesting read. I don't love it but it wasn't bad. It was good enough that I kept going. The descriptions were beautiful and were really the crowning the glory of the book. To be honest I can't pinpoint what didn't jive with me for this one.
I liked how the whole story is written as a journal entry, looking back over Amalric's life and the choices he made that brought him through his adventures. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if it was the past/present voice that was causing the disconnect for me. But in retrospect I don't think that was it.
I think what kept me from enjoying this book was the characters. Amalric is likable. He is emotional and seems earnest. He talks about bluntness as a virtue and I really liked his cleverness. But Janos, on the other hand, always seemed smarmy and like he put himself on a pedestal (Amalric certainly did). I never empathized with him or felt like I could so when the twist at the end occurred I was just like, "Yeah - no wonder." Most of the other characters were very background and barely flushed out which made it feel flat. The story lacked a sense of community. It like two 3D characters walking in a 2D world.
I don't think I would recommend this book unless someone specifically mentioned wanting to read well written descriptions of different places in a fantasy world. It would have to be a very specific conversations for me to suggest someone else read this.

DNF. Couldn’t even get past the first chapter. The premise of the book sounded good and I was excited for a good fantasy adventure, but the immediate male objectification and obsession over a sex worker just killed it for me. And the way the book describes women Felt too icky. And reading previous reviews of this book, it seems like it doesn’t get much better in that area.

Honestly, I had to jump out of this book before I even got to the cool fantastical parts because the main character's idea that everyone from other parts of the world was a hooting savage became not-worth-it to read past long before anything cool happened.

I think the narration style is just not my preference. I put this book down twice before being able to actually finish it. In the beginning, Amalric is a pretty unlikable character, which made him insufferable to read as the POV character. The interest of the plot eventually picked up, and it certainly is a swashbuckling adventure...but it's filled with deus ex machinas because the ability of this world's magic just keeps growing and changing, and there's even a campy villain's tell-all. I kept expecting it to end, and then it kept going. While the adventure side got a little interesting, I found I was able to pick it up and read in short sessions when I had time and then put it back down and move on without really feeling tied to it. There's more books in the series, but I'm not convinced I'm going to read them. All in all, it was ok.

This is the first book in the series about the family of Antero. It has everything: travel, battles, discovery, magic and sorcery. The novel is dedicated to the youngest son of the family - Amalric Emilie Antero, his adventure and search for the Far kingdoms. Together with Janos Grey Cloak he embarks on a journey, where they await the mass of the dangers, enemies, encounters, successes and failures, love, the test of friendship. This work is for those who craves adventure, loves stories about knights. The book will give You real pleasure...

I feel the author managed to cram into one book more than others can in a series. Tragic friendship and loyalty, a slide into madness, ambition and dreams, this book has it all. The sense of adventure should make this essential reading for boys.”

The single best fantasy adventure I've read so far.
Evocative descriptions, thoroughly believable characters, and just the right details to make your mind hurtle the vast distances to places that only exist in dreams.

Very well written fantasy story about human spirit, friendship, incredible adventures! Though the end is really sad... It actually was a part of my inspiration about my second book "The Opposite of Magic"...

I started this book when I was probably 13 and just recently finished it, more from a sense of duty than any enjoyment. I can't believe it was nominated for an award?? The blatant but unacknowledged sexual tension between the two main dudes was the best part.

An ok read. There were times when the detail of clothing or food was a bit too much, then areas of the story where I would have liked more detail was rushed through. Different, but as a reading addict, I enjoyed the read.

I read this one about 20 years ago and I remember liking it. The only thing I didn't like was that it had too much "Deus Ex Machina"--every time the main character would get in over his head a ghost would come out of nowhere and bail him out.

The system of magic is original. The main character is a dumb, oversexed ape who lives on luck alone, and he can be annoying. The story drags on a bit, but the ending is worth the wait.
