Not my usual read, arrived from a book Daunts subscription. Interesting ideas on Liberalism, certainly made me think.
The brief sections regarding modern China and Russia were useful in understanding how those regimes view themselves and indeed the west.

Still not entirely sure what I just read, but it was fascinating and haunting and I'm sure I will come back to it again and again, and find something new and disturbing each time.

Having enjoyed several of his other books, to say this was a disappointment would be a severe understatement. A badly researched attempt to slander a so called ‘woke’ movement he can barely conceptualise, one that relies largely on straw man arguments and woeful misrepresentations of issues such as critical race theory, it’s an insult to the intelligent reader. What we have is another right wing philosopher who remained silent when the blacklisting of thousands of trade unionists who lost their jobs for their beliefs came to light, lamenting the state of affairs when a couple of academics are called out on their views (and for whom ‘silenced’ usually means thousands of column inches and slots on GB News). As usual, the commitment to free speech is a one way street where the silencing of the other side does not merit a squeak of protest. In the context of a world in which we face a rampant far right, this book is at best naive, and at worst, dangerous.
