It's apparently a requirement for gay prosecutors in 2026 to be absolutely incapable of expressing their feelings in normal, productive ways and to hurt the object of their love instead. Now, Joo Taeseon is no Cha Siyoung* - he's at least interested in bringing culprits to justice and couldn't be farther away from corruption. Neither does he try to bury Lee Chaeha alive, so that's a point in his favor, I guess. He's still king of sending mixed, extremely confusing signals Chaeha has no chance to make head or tail of. He's also very pathetically down bad for his boy.
Just like the drama adaptation, the novel was a pleasant surprise. The cases and the central mystery aren't especially complex, but plausible, and the story deals head-on with the difficulties of its boss-subordinate relationship and how it translates into the bedroom. It's made all the more entertaining by Joo Teaseon being a sadistic freak with more than a few screws loose. While his trauma can explain some of his behaviour, it's really no excuse for how unhinged he is. And poor Chaeha is so used to getting bullied and picked on, he doesn't even offer much resistance except a few futile attempts at talking back. He's no pushover, though, just extremely aware of their hierarchy, and has grown weary due to his past experiences.
At the end, this is a story about two broken people finding solace in each other, licking each other's wounds - and Teaseon licking everything else of Chaeha's, too.
The book also served as a reminder that spit kink is really, truly, absolutely not my kink. Objectively, I've read worse. Subjectively, though...
(*If you wanna see a real evil gay prosecutor, watch The Scarecrow.)
I'd fun with this one but there's just something that didn't click. The ML's a little toxic and rough in bed, even though he's one of those rare ones that does apologize to the MC for what he did and he does tend to see things in the MC's POV and conclude that he's unfair to the MC in some situations. As for the MC he's kind of a doormat but he does know how to speak his mind when he needs to. As for the mysteries I found them easy to discover.
The plot of the book is very intriguing and easy to follow. The whole concept of a murderer’s son & victim’s son being involved with each other is a good plot. They have really good chemistry as well. The start of the book is slow burn so we get ample time to build chemistry. The falling in love is slow. I did find the top too rough and inconsiderate many times, even though he apologises later, it leaves unsettling feeling.
