In this short illustrated work of graphic nonfiction, the foremost French journalist covering Burmese politics covers the 2021 military coup, particularly amplifying the voices of the resistance. I picked up this book at the Taipei Art Book Fair in November, but only now got around to reading it. Translated into both English (by Alice Heathwood) and Mandarin (by 許惇純), this slim volume packs an informative punch. Although it was at times a bit dry for what I expected from the genre, the black-and-white pencil illustrations from Hong Kong artist Kwong-Shing Lau were beautiful and affecting, particularly when they captured the incredible violence protestors face in their fight for democracy. I was particularly moved by the story of Kyal Sin, or “Angel”, a 19-year-old activist who was shot to death by the army on March 3rd of 2021. May her memory be a blessing and a call to arms for pro-democracy movements everywhere. 4 out of 5 “Everything Will Be OK” t-shirts.
