A lord’s son, a milkmaid, and seven mischievous goats.
After running from her past, Sophia built a new life for herself in the Northlands, taking a job as a milkmaid for the local nobility and creating her own family with the friends she meets at the Cozy Cat Cafe. She spends her days spoiling the goats and finally feels safe, but something is still missing. She wants more than just safety–she wants love and a real family of her own.
Lord Caspian Rendon has returned home to–in his Father’s words, get serious–and contemplate his life’s path. As a third son, he doesn’t have much other than his title–and while the past two years of training in the Royal Guard have set him up for a potential career, they haven’t done much in the way of finding him a wealthy wife, which had always seemed the more appealing option of the two.
When he runs into the beautiful, sweet, and always kind Sophia taking care of his little sister’s goats, he begins to realize there’s more to life than marrying into wealth. As the baby goats, a mischievous little sister, and Fall Festival planning keep bringing Caspian and Sophia together, he starts to fall for the goat girl. But when Sophia's mysterious past finally catches up with her, Caspian must make a hard choice ... Can he risk it all for love, or will he never see her again?
Once Upon An Apple is a Snow White fairytale retelling and the first book in the Galamere Chronicles. Each standalone book is a retelling of a beloved story or fairy tale, with the swoon-worthy sweet romance of a Hallmark movie, the wholesome and heartwarming feeling of cozy fantasy, and the comfort of a found family of friends, with a sprinkling of danger and a dash of magic.
Gabrielle Landi lives in Southern Indiana with her husband and children and has a soft spot for every stray cat that ends up on her front porch. When she’s not writing, she spends her time chasing children, wishing there was more coffee, and eating chocolate like it’s her job. If she had to write her own love story in tropes, it would include second chance romance and a secret relationship, and would be entirely unbelievable.
Oops, I totally binge read this book in a morning, but it was so cute?!
Even though it was Insta-love—a trope I usually roll my eyes at—this was very cute and had such a cozy feel to it somehow.
There were a couple parts with romance was a tiny bit more than I usually prefer, but it never felt like lusting or the main couple was only focused on the other’s outward appearance and physical attributes. They noticed the other and appreciated what they saw, but it didn’t feel like I was encroaching on their private thoughts nor was it too much for my tastes. I would say it was more than Melanie Cellier’s fairytale retellings as a comparison in terms of the emotions and kisses, but not by a ton.
Honestly, I thought Sophia was a great Snow White character. She’s sweet and innocent, but also is able to tease her friends and stand up against others. She was very well-rounded, really, in my opinion.
The sibling banter and overall sibling content was also so enjoyable which added to the book. But it was what epilogue scene was truly excellent and honestly made the book better for me. I found myself grinning like a ninny by the end! Super cute and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
*As a note, this book didn’t have any magic or magical parts besides a couple mentions of curses (but those were used more as a joke than seriously meant). It does look like the next book in the series will have some magic, however, just as a heads up.
Main Content- As mentioned above, there is no magic content, but a couple mentions of cursed apples (teasing).
Sophia and Caspian both pray and say thanks, but it’s never said towards Whom those prayers are towards; A mention of Sophia’s former employer making her life a “living hell”.
Fighting, Injuries, Pain, Being kidnapped and tied-up, Being threatened, & Thinking [the character] may die or be killed (up to a few sentences).
No language stronger than ’dang’, ‘for heaven’s sake’, idiot’, ‘shut up’, and ‘stupid’ which are all used up to four times; A couple mentions of curses said, but not written out (by Caspian); Caspian makes a “rude gesture” behind his back to his brothers after they tease him (which makes them laugh); Eye rolling; Sibling teasing (including a teasing lie that is corrected).
Sophia recalls the mistreatment and hatred she was subjected to by her former employer and ran away from her after being warned that the woman may harm or do “worse” her (bringing this up gives her anxiety and Sophia later panics that her former employer will harm or kill Caspian to hurt her); *Major Spoilers* ); Sophia wonders if she is broken compared to others; Sophia is hurt by not knowing about her birth date or about her parents due to her former employer’s impact; Sophia doesn’t like gossiping, but doesn’t mind listening to it.
Mentions of deaths & grief (including of a father, a mother, & a child); Mentions of when Sophia ran away and nearly froze to death; Mentions of a kidnapping; Mentions of hatred; Mentions of lies & lying; Mentions of gossip & rumors; Mentions of manure/poop; A couple mentions of poisons; A mention of death threats; A mention of vomiting.
1 neck kiss, 4 hair kisses, 2 forehead kisses, 1 almost kiss (up to 4-6 sentences); 6 kisses lasting a sentence, 1 kiss lasting a couple sentences, 3 kisses lasting a few sentences, Remembering kisses & almost kisses (up to a couple sentences); Wanting to kiss (up to a couple sentences); Staring at lips.
Touches, Embraces, Dancing, Hand holding, Warmth, Butterflies/Flutters, Electricity/Sparks, Smelling, & Nearness (Caspian also snuggles with Sophia and pulls her onto his lap once, up to a few sentences); Flirting & Blushes; Noticing & Staring (up to a few sentences); A bit of jealousy from Caspian (one which is more over hypothetical situation than a reality).
Sophia notices Caspian’s sweat and muscles when working out and has never found a sweaty man to smell good before, but wishes to step closer to Caspian to sniff him (up to a few sentences); When treating his injury, Sophie stares at Caspian’s chest and he thinks about teasing her about it, but instead decides to bring it up later (which does not happen on-page); Caspian and Sophia share a blanket next to a fire and sleep there (which Caspian knows is entirely improper for them to share and his brother will probably tell their mother, but does it anyway for Sophia’s comfort).
Caspian sees his parents share a “very long and improper kiss” and looks away to give them some privacy before “he died of embarrassment”.
Mentions of kisses, kissing, almost kisses, & a first kiss; Mentions of broken hearts & wooing/courting a girl (Sophia’s friend warns Caspian about wooing her and then breaking her heart if he leaves, which he realizes isn’t right and plans to stop, but instead gets serious about his feelings for Sophia); A few mentions of flirting.
This book could have REALLY used a pass with a professional editor. There’s so much unnecessary dialogue that basically boils down to “How are you?” “Good, how are you?” “Good” “What are you doing today?” and it gets repetitive and /boring/. The writing is also very tell-y rather than show-y. All the not-so-subtle hints at the side characters having secrets that are never revealed in an obvious future sequels tease got annoying as well.
The characters also never really feel like fairy tale characters. They all talk and interact with each other in much too modern and casual ways, especially when characters of a lower social status address a higher one. This should have been a contemporary romance. Additionally, this only very /loosely/ feels like a fairy tale retelling - there’s only the barest of threads that makes this a Snow White story.
Also, HOW did most of the characters not know that Caspian is nobility?!? He would have been around the estate and town before he joined the royal guard so /someone/ should have known, and if a character didn’t know they should have inferred by the way other characters addressed him. (Of course, they /all/ speak far too casually to nobility anyway, so…)
Lastly, as much as I am okay with a dash of instalove, this is WAY too instalove-y. There’s not much in terms of showing the reader the connection/spark Sophia and Caspian have - they don’t feel naturally drawn to each other. Also Caspian’s whole thing being he doesn’t like animals is an instant turnoff.
This was cute! Very cozy, very sweet, full of friendship, baked goods, and chaotic goats. I liked Sophia a lot, she deserves the whole world, and I'm so glad that Caspian is willing to give it to her, haha! Sure, some things were quite convenient. Yes, I do think it's wild (and somewhat relatable) that his parents invited him to vacation in their home, heaped responsibilities on him, then had the audacity to complain that he wasn't spending enough time with them. The DRAMA of the last 40% kinda came out of nowhere, but that's fine.
Not the best Snow White retelling I've ever read, perhaps, but not the worst by FAR so. I'll probably pick up the sequel in the not-too-distant future!
**content warnings for kidnapping and child abuse (in the past)
Very cute and wholesome! I love how the seven dwarves were switched out for seven goats though not much else really screamed “Snow White retelling” outside of an oddly placed “poisoned apple” scene that really didn’t do anything for the plot at all. In all honesty this just feels like a cozy fantasy with fairy tale vibes rather then a strict retelling, so if you like cozy fantasy but not retellings I think this one could work for you.
Sophia and Caspian were fine characters and cute together and the rest of the cast was fun, even if I did find Caspian’s parents a little over the top sappy at times. (Also I read two separate books back to back with the main guy being named Caspian. Weird much? 🤨)
Overall the cute and light read I needed in my stressful life at the time. Also the cover and map are GORGEOUS which always helps, lol.

A sweet Snow White story. I absolutely love a happy, wholesome read! Sophia and Caspian were genuinely kind, caring, and loving. And when he started calling her “my Sophia”🥰. Overall it had everything you need in a fairy tale retelling: true love, sacrifice, finding family, and mischievous goats 🐐.
I had the pleasure of receiving an early copy of this book, and it was an overall pleasant read. I have a soft spot for fairytale retellings, especially with cute animals! Once Upon an Apple is a cozy, sweet retelling with modern slang that makes for an interesting twist!
Story: 4/5 Worldview: 5/5
I loved meeting Sophia and getting to know her backstory. She and Caspian are an interesting pair, and I liked seeing Sophia’s friends, too. There was a moment in the middle of the book, however, where the book suddenly jumped about two or three weeks into the future and that threw the pacing off for me. I did like that Caspian was respectful of Sophia and her boundaries at the beginning, but I feel like it got a bit possessive/touchy towards the end. I really loved the overall cozy fairytale vibe!
There were no Christian themes in this book, but the message of the novel itself was nice! The characters learned about how their worth is not determined by other people or by their wealth. They learn that they have a choice in building their futures.
Overall, a sweet read! It's definitely got rom-com, Hallmark movie elements if that's your thing! Thanks to the author for the opportunity to check out the book, and I look forward to the next one!
So this was a retelling of the classic fairytale Snow White. This is my first retelling and I loved it so much! Gabrielle captures the essence of the fairytale and made it her own. It was charming and heartwarming. I liked that it was seven goats it was fun! Sophia was a sweet character and she definitely had Snow White charm and spirit. She was a good and kind character. Caspian, the lord's son, was excellent as her love interest. He was handsome, charming, thoughtful and very kind. Lady Manning was excellent as the villain. She was cold and twisted exactly as she should have been!!! The supporting characters were great too and the goats made me chuckle. The story is written in third person. It's told from Sophia and Caspian's perspectives. I loved this. It let us know what was going on both their minds. If you love fairytale retellings or even if you have never read one then I highly recommend this. I can't wait for the next book in the series!! 🍎🍏
Such an adorable story and a unique and creative twist on the popular fairy tale, "Snow White".
The goats! Goodness gracious, they were so cute. Such a fun addition. We need more goats in fairy tale retellings.
Sophia and Caspian were darling, and I love the story's ambiance. There's a cute little bakery that makes you want to go there, grab a cup of tea and a tasty treat, and sit back and relax. I'm all for that. It was just so warm and inviting.
In short, this is a charming and cozy story readers of fairy tale retellings will enjoy.
*I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The only reason I read this book is because the cover art was done by Ireen Chau. In other words, yes, I judged this book by the cover. I love Ireen's work, and if she did the cover for this one, I thought it would be worth my time to give it a chance.
I don't think this book was a waste of my time. Was it good? Uhhh, well, saying "no" feels too strong. Like my brother says, "bad" books are not the worst - it's the boring ones that actually take the most effort to read. I was not bored with this book because I was too busy laughing at the cringe-y dialogue. I'll share some of my Kindle highlights if they aren't too spoiler-y. I was entertained and compelled enough by this book to keep going, although I'll take a hard pass on the rest of the series.
So what was so bad? I read another review which discussed how this book needed an editor. I agree - there were some really clunky sentences and filler dialogue. What confused me the most were the setting and the characters - they were extremely underdeveloped. For one thing, I started with the assumption that Dietrich, Thea, and Beatrice must be the same ages as Sophia, but the way the author referred to them slowly painted a picture in my mind that these characters must be 50+. If you examine the descriptions of the rest of the books in the series, it turns out that they are the same age as Sophia. But it didn't read that way. The world-building was also lacking, and it took me a while to develop a good sense of what time period the author was shooting for. The book started out in a place called the "Cozy Cat Cafe." In my mind that's a Starbucks-type place filled with cats, but this book is by no means set in modern day.
And I don't know what was happening with the pacing in this one, but boy was it off. I don't want to say too much and lean into spoilers, but let's just say that the romance seemed to give "slow-burn" vibes, but at the same time, the characters were considering marriage less than 2/5 of the way through the book...
My hope is that these issues resolve themselves over the course of the author's career. Perhaps as she writes more fantasy she'll be able to properly communicate her visions. But I don't think I'll continue to read her books just to find out if that is the case.
ARC Copy This book had a lot of potential. I enjoyed the goats and the friendships Sophia built, and I absolutely loved the cover featuring Sophia and Caspian. However, the story felt slow and lacked depth. I don't have strong opinions about Sophia—at times, she came across as too naive and weak, both physically and emotionally.
As I was reading, it felt like I was given a copy of the first draft. There are many reasons for this impression. The story often told rather than showed, which prevented me from fully experiencing the love story. Even after finishing the book, I still don’t understand how or why Sophia and Caspian fell in love. Their relationship lacked believability, and there was no spark or connection between them that made their love convincing.
The dialogue was often unnecessary, making the story feel cheap, boring, and repetitive—a recurring issue throughout the book. As someone who believes that "insta-love" is a lazy way to write romance, I felt this was a direct result of being told rather than shown the development of their relationship. Without a clear connection between the characters, it’s hard to believe in their love or understand what they love about each other. Additionally, there were numerous plot holes that were never resolved.
I disagree with this book being marketed as a Snow White retelling. Simply including an apple and an evil stepmother isn't enough. The story had the potential to be a creative and interesting retelling, but it lacked key elements from the original tale. Another issue I noticed was that the characters didn’t sound like they belonged in a fairy tale. Instead, they sounded too informal, as if they were from a contemporary romance.
This was such a charming story. Sophia was excited to have found new friends and moved on from her old life. Caspian, while trying to figure out his future, ended up falling for her. And the goats were so full of character! I especially loved how Caspian did everything he could to save Sophia when she needed him most.
This was such a great book. I loved this retelling of snow white. It was a little different from most, but it was so good. Who doesn't love a cute romance and adorable goats as pets. The characters and story were so good, and I can't wait to reread it with my daughter.
Despite the rating, I really enjoyed this book. It was super cute and wholesome. The only reason I’m giving it 3 stars instead of 4 is because some of the dialogue just didn’t work for me and also this book didn’t feel like a Snow White retelling even though this book is supposed to be a Snow White retelling. This book didn’t really give me Snow White vibes at all. I think there were only 3 instances where I could see that this book was meant to be a Snow White retelling. That being said, I did enjoy this book. I liked the characters and the world building. I had a fun time with this book. (3.75 stars ⭐️)
Sophia works as a goat girl for the Rendon family on their estate. A year ago, she was running for her life from Lady Manning who had used and abused her for her entire life. It took running to the Northlands for her to build a new life where she is happy and finally had friends that she meets regularly at the Cozy Cat Cafe. She loves her goats and her new life but the lack of a family and love leaves a hole that unfortunately leaves her feeling like something is still missing.
Lord Caspian Rendon is the 3rd son of Lord Rendon, Sophie’s employer. He’s spent the last 2 years training in the Royal Guard and upon his return to the family estate, he bumps into the beautiful, sweet and always kind goat girl who begins to turn his head.
The baby goats and the Fall Festival keep bringing the 2 together and they begin to fall in love. But what happens when Sophia’s past finally catches up to her?
I absolutely love fairytale retellings and this one was a really good one. I thoroughly enjoyed the sweetness of the story including some of the drama and suspense thrown in. I’m looking forward to reading the next book!
This was such a cute cozy fantasy and sweet retelling of Snow White. I loved all the nods to the original story. It’s a little slower-paced in the beginning, but things really started to pick up during the second half.
I liked Sophia. She had such a kind soul. I enjoyed seeing the special bond between her and the seven mischievous goats. They were adorable and reminded me of one of my own goats, Millie. She’s such a troublemaker, but you can’t help but love her.
Caspian was an upstanding and honorable guy who I enjoyed getting to know. His aversion to getting dirty was funny yet relatable. There was an instant spark between him and Sophia that had me rooting for them.
This story was a breath of fresh air that left a big smile on my face. I recommend it to fans of sweet and swoony fairytale retellings. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
I really really loved this cozy retelling. It made me laugh many times, the story tugged at my heart strings, not to mention I now strangely want goats. Don't think I'd actually enjoy them but this story makes it seem like I would. The love story was very sweet and swoony, and I enjoyed seeing it through both love interests throughout the story. I adore Caspian's family and Sophia's friends, they seem like people I'd like to hang out with in real life. I also really think the release date is perfect as this is a superb, cozy fall story!
Once Upon an Apple. This was a sweet medieval romance with cozy elements of baking, friendship and cute animals. Throw in a fall festival and you have the perfect comfort read. Sophia works for the Lord and Lady Rendon, caring for their goats and helping around the manor. When the youngest Rendon son, Caspian, returns from guard training after two years, he is enchanted by Sophia’s dark beauty and sweet nature. But Sophia is running from a tragic past and when danger befalls her, Caspian is desperate to rescue the girl he has fallen for. This could definitely be in the YA category, both in content and complexity, but it was a warm, wholesome story which, while a bit repetitive, gave the reader a smile and a HEA.
This had so much potential, but I just did not feel it.
Let me start with what I did like. I really enjoyed the goats and their antics. I can only imagine how much work it can be taking care of them. I also liked the friendship Sophia built with some of the people in town.
Now what I didn't like. I did not believe their love whatsoever. How can you distrust all strangers one moment and the next you're in love with one?
This entire story is written in a way where I'm being told they are in love instead of showing me. Why or how did they fall in love? No idea, I'm only told they are.
This story is advertised as a Snow White retelling, but an apple and an evil stepmother does not make it so.
And last but not least, how in the world did no one recognize Caspian as the lord's son when he lived there for years?
This is such a fun and cozy Snow White retelling with rambunctious baby goats and a handsome lord. Love all the hidden identity mishaps, but I most enjoyed watching Sophia grow into herself and fall for Caspian as he grew to know himself better too. The audiobook was perfect to go with it! Can’t wait to read more!
4.5-5 stars. This has been my favorite Snow White retelling that I've read! I read it on a rainy day, and it was so cozy. And I absolutely loved the goats! Having owned goats for a couple years, it was fun to read😄
A sweet, clean little romance with a beautiful cover! It was very cozy and I enjoyed the characters and the plot. The prose drew me out of the story a little and it was a little bit too insta-love for my tastes, but I do plan to continue the series!
This was a sweet, light hearted story! I really enjoyed the autumnal atmosphere and the fairytale setting. The characters were so lovable. It was like Ella Enchanted in a small town. 🍎
My rating: ☆☆☆☆☆ (4.5 stars rounded up to 5) • This story is sooo CUTE! It's so cozy and all of the relationships - romantic, platonic, and familial - are so sweet. I love a good fairytale retelling and this has just enough Snow White in it that it's recognizable, but it's also very much its own story. Sophia and Caspian are adorable, and so is their banter. If you read the accompanying novellas and the bonus epilogues - which I HIGHLY recommend that you do - you get to know a lot more about the other characters in this town, making you feel very connected to the town as a whole. Once Upon A Café is a really cute addition from the pov of a cat. But Once Upon A Cake is so so sooo good, and I hope we get more from those characters' povs. I did what was probably an unhealthy amount of grinning, giggling, and kicking my feet while reading both Once Upon An Apple and Once Upon A Cake. I can't wait for more stories in this world, and I'm so glad I get to dive right into the ARC of the sequel!
This book is so sweet! It’s like Bridgerton meets Snow White meets Hallmark. Love the fall vibes it has. The characters have an innocence about them that just draws you in. Their banter and chemistry from the beginning is so innocent and sweet as you read their story. And the goats definitely help make this book special and unique! You won’t be disappointed reading this story!
okay first of all, the cover is absolutely adorable and the cozy fairytale marketing totally worked on me. i wanted to love this and i was so excited about the concept. a sweet, clean romance in a fall fairytale world? yes please 🍂
and while i’d still recommend it to readers who love cozy vibes and don't mind a slow pace... the story itself felt REALLY light. like fanfiction or a short story. not a lot of plot or depth, and the pacing felt a little off in places. there were also a few moments that felt a bit awkward or cringy in the writing.
with that said, it was completely clean and wholesome. it's a quick read, and i do think there's readers out there who will absolutely love it!
i’ve heard great things about the next book in the series, so i’m still planning to give that one a try!
I usually read spicy spooks, but this is a clean cozy romance story that was hard to put down! I ended up finishing it one day. It was a really great short read that had just the right amount of plot twist and action that made it really enjoyable.
I loved our FMC close knit friend group and the cozy vibes her friends cafe shop provides. I am excited to read about our FMC friends in the upcoming books in the series.
If you love clean/sweet romance, found family, and cozy vibes this book is right up your alley!
