Year after year, Rick Veitch has continued to flesh out his sprawling deconstruction of the Superman mythos. Collectively known as The King Hell Heroica, Veitch has crafted a contemporary classic that parses the root of all superhero comics by diving deep into the mythmaking nature of humanity whilst also delivering some scathing satire on the commercial side of the comics industry. Following earlier chapters like Brat Pack, The Maximortal, and the recently completed Boy Maximortal, Veitch continues the story of True-Man with the first entry of the newest volume entitled True-Man the Maximortal.

This chapter, accounting for a little more than 50 pages, further develops the story of True-Man in the late 60s, which also coincides with the emergence of the underground comix movement. Where Boy Maximortal focused attention on the fictional analog of Jack Kirby, True-Man the Maximortal introduces new players to the series that serve as analogs to the burgeoning alternatives to mainstream comics. Veitch capably navigates the bridge between the two disparate fields within the medium, something that he is well primed to have done given his history working in both spaces. The rest of the ~100 page count of this issue is dedicated to some gorgeous back matter that any long time fan of Veitch will more than enjoy.

Rick Veitch's continued development of The King Hell Heroica continues to be fascinating and bizarre, and a true novelty within the broader landscape of the modern comics medium.
