Eric Wrathburn is just as troubled as he is gifted. Due to his special abilities, he has been chosen to rescue the citizens of Hiraeth, a magical city that very few people know about, while battling his own personal demons.
Serena Catskill is a travel writer visiting London for the first time. After her initial encounter with the enigmatic and tortured Eric Wrathburn, she is thrust into his twisted but often beautiful world where nothing is quite what it seems.
Together they embark on a strange journey into the unknown, but they are not alone. Eric has a nefarious voice in the back of his head. It has been there since birth. He sees it in the mirror. It visits him in the dark. Over the years, he has managed to keep it at bay, but not anymore.
Sometimes when you cage the beast, the beast gets angry...

Wrathburn an incredible dark fantasy journey into the unknown.
Eric Wrathburn has special powers and is a troubled person with a second personality a beast he has been able to suppress until now, and the voice in Eric's head is getting louder and more aggressive.
Serena Catskill an American journalist on her first visit to London has a chance encounter with Eric at the Savoy hotel. Eric has been selected to find and rescue the people of the hidden magical city of Hiraeth, because of this meeting Serena is caught up in this adventure into a world which is not all that it seems, a beautiful world full of mystery and danger.
I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy thriller, drawn in at the first page. A visually stunning story with fantastic characters and settings written in incredible detail.
Wrathburn is an exceptional book by Hayley Bernard-Ryan, it attracted my attention from the cover through page one, right until the end. At no point could I guess how this truly magical journey of Eric and Serena was going to end. I absolutely loved seeing this story unfold. A fast-paced, must-read thriller. Highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed Wrathburn! It's a different read then my normal genre. Hayley does a great job mixing dark fantasy, romance, and psychological thriller elements into an exciting and unforgettable story. The different genres kept me interested, and I loved how each part came together to create a rich, layered story. Hayley's vivid descriptions and imaginative storytelling made the world of Hiraeth feel real, like I was right there with the characters. Eric Wrathburn's complex character and his intense relationship with Serena Catskill added depth and emotion, making it hard to put the book down. All-in-all, Wrathburn is a beautifully written story of turmoil, magic, and love.
Superb! This story has twists and turns within its twist and turns!
Eric Wrathburn is a troubled individual. With gifts he's afraid to use, a dark passenger and a family who is, well, different, it's no surprise that he's struggling with what's in his head. Visited by his sister at the start of the story, Eric is tasked with getting to her in the mysterious city of Hireath. Unfortunately she leaves him with something more than a simple map. Rescuing Serena, he enlists the help of his cousins to tread the perilous path set before him.
Pretty much everything fantasy is in this book, with a delightful twist of horror to cap it all off. Demons, mad professors, magic, sci-fi and a love story are tangled together in a highly readable story that moves along at an excellent pace.
I would love to learn more about that Wrathburn family, which was only really hinted at in the book - how and why are they who they are? But this does not detract from the story, and hopefully the author will have that up their sleeve for a future tale. An easy 5 stars.
It's funny, mythological, fantasy, magical, deep, unique, and entertaining!
I found it to be extremely refreshing and well-written. If you want a solid story that never jumps the shark, manages to be both charming and thought-provoking, I would highly suggest this book.
If you like a Harry Potter-esque landscape with Supernatural (that's Sam and Dean Supernatural, mind you!) I think you would love this novel. I'll definitely be reading her next one!
Makes me want to go and read my other favorite Genres.
Loved the book. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a fantasy book. Did not disappoint. Since I’ve come into this world of indie writers psychological Thrillers I’ve put my other genre on a back burner. . If you liked The Hobbit: by J.R.R. Tolkien (Author, you will love this book. I can’t describe for fear of spoilers. I’d love to see indie writers in ⚠️fantasy similar to Terry Goodkind ⚠️Similar to Craig Johnson & Pamela Fagan Hutchins ⚠️ Romance Similar to Robyn Carr series Sullivan Crossing.
I was going to say I fell in love with Eric Wrathburn in the first chapter but it wasn't it was the first page. The whole story and writing grabbed me instantly, I literally couldn't stop reading. The chemistry between Eric and Serena is electric, and I absolutely adored the twins. I could imagine the landscapes from how detailed the descriptions were and I travelled with them in their quest. I haven't loved a character so much since Mr Darcy, I hope to read more about Eric. I look forward to more from this author. You truly are an artist.
First let me say this is not my typical genre but I was assigned Hayley as my adopted author for April. I did enjoy this book. The characters are quirky and have great comradery amongst them, which leads to some pretty funny moments. The premise to the story is Eric has to make his way back to an alternate world called Hiraeth to rescue the people there, including his sister. Making this trip to Hiraeth is a human girl, who got caught up in the mix and a set of twins that are Eric's cousins. Along the way, Eric discovers he is powerful and has the power to save those in Hiraeth but at what cost to himself? Can Eric, Serena and the twins fight off demons, succubus and other worldly creatures? This book is worth reading to find out. The plot was solid the creatures were cool and scary! The inclusion of mental illness was awesome and a great way to bring awareness in a fun way!
Wrathburn by Haley Bernard-Ryan isn’t my usual type of read, but I have to admit the writing is strong, and the story has a captivating intensity that kept me engaged. The dark fantasy world of Hiraeth is brought to life, and the characters are intriguing.
Eric Wrathburn is troubled, complex, and burdened by both his extraordinary gifts and the dark voice that haunts him. Serena Catskill, on the other hand, provides a grounded perspective as an outsider drawn into Eric’s mysterious and chaotic world. Their dynamic is compelling, balancing tension, vulnerability, and just the right touch of romance.
The writing itself is a standout. The dialogue is sharp, and the pacing, while occasionally a bit slow in the middle, builds well to the climax. The blend of dark fantasy and romance is well executed, though it may lean more toward the fantastical than romantic for some readers. While Wrathburn didn’t fully resonate with me due to personal taste, I can see how fans of dark fantasy and emotionally charged narratives will love it. The story is captivating, the characters are memorable, and the themes of inner struggle and redemption are powerful. If you’re drawn to stories that blend magic, mystery, and emotional complexity, this one is worth a read!
Eric Wrathburn is certainly gifted, although this causes nothing but inner turmoil for him and those around him.
When he meets the beautiful Serena during a horrific event, they're instantly drawn to each other.
Eric and Serena embark on a dangerous journey to the magical city of Hiraeth - the people there need him!
Since birth, Eric has had a sinister voice inside him. The voice belongs to Pathos, whom Eric can feel and see in the mirror. So far, Eric has succeeded in keeping Pathos mostly dormant, but Pathos has had enough of being silenced. He is angry and now wants control of Eric.
Will Eric have to relinquish his control over the demonic Pathos???
I thoroughly enjoyed this dark Fantasy, it's not a genre I've read before. This is a visually stunning story full of quirky character's (loved the twins), and a cat... Hayley's exceptional prose brings the story to life. I found my heart literally racing throughout the story. The narrative is brutal, raw, and chillingly personal. A strangely beautiful read.
Thanks Hayley Bernard-Ryan, your ability to paint such vivid and emotional character's and scenes is commendable 🥰
I just finished Wrathburn and I’m still reeling. It’s one of those stories that grabs you by the collar and drags you through shadowy alleyways, half-lit dreams, and emotional wreckage; and somehow makes it beautiful. Eric is... wow. He’s not your typical hero. He’s gifted, yes, but also deeply haunted. Enter Serena Catskill, a travel writer who’s just trying to enjoy London. She meets Eric and; bam; her whole reality shifts. She’s pulled into his world, which is twisted and surreal but also strangely poetic. Their dynamic is electric: she’s grounded, curious, and emotionally sharp, while he’s unraveling in the most mesmerizing way. If you like stories that blend dark fantasy with emotional depth, this one’s a must. It’s unsettling, gorgeous, and totally unforgettable.
Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Story Telling: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I went into this without any clue about the book and was pleasantly surprised!
Eric Wrathburn is a tortured soul who has been hiding his demons for many, many years, and they are finally coming out to haunt him as he journeys to save a city that is not well known. Along the way he meets Serena who is unintentionally thrust into the journey with him.
I enjoyed this book so much I cannot wait to see what else this author writes!
Finished 😜😜😜 Hayley Bernard-Ryan you just sent me on a rollercoaster 🎢 ride to a place where everything was crazy beyond belief. I feel like I’ve just ridden through the mind of Wrathburn and came out the other end on a high ☝️🔥. Well written, absolutely brilliant to read and your brain definitely works outside the box 📦. Fantastic. Well done 👏 A definite 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️because it’s completely different and works so perfectly ☄️💥
I don't know or remember adding this book in my kindle , it's definitely not my type of usual genre and it was a good read a bit out there but nothing which I don't think is quite possible , it was funny and light hearted but also strange but a good strange and it was quick and didn't drag on so kudos to the author . At first I thought ah no I'm not into this lark but it was very enjoyable 😄
I read this for a change of pace after reading several very heavy thrillers. This book was a breath of fresh air for a horror/fantasy lover like me! It covers all the bases. It has numerous mythical creatures, scary monsters, magical powers, portals, fights, friendship, and love. It's not oversexual or overly romantic, but it has heart. I found myself wishing that this was a series because I wasn't ready to say goodbye.
This book centers around Eric and Serena. A dark fantasy psychological thriller.
Eric rescues Serena and they have to find Eric's sister to prevent the world from changing for the worse
It began slowly, but once I got into the story it was really good. There are many characters and just enough fantasy to keep it interesting. I'm into both genres so this story was perfect for me.
What a fun ride! I don’t normally read fantasy and am amazed by the author's imagination in creating engaging characters and a crazy plot. Her book looks at the literal and figurative meaning of “inner demons,” in a scary, twisted way! I loved all the imagery and how she wove humor into her horror story!! Looking forward to the sequel!!
A trip into the dark mind of a broken soul. From the real world to a self-made hellscape Eric has a horrible time of it. All while trying to find the woman he loves. What is real what is a lie? Eric's mind is breaking and he will either fall or rise. This terrifying twisted story will have you on the edge of your seat. I look forward to more from Hayley.
I loved her book! First time reading her books and i will for sure read more from her. A story filled with mistical creatures and demons of all kinds, even one dragon( i love dragons) and made me laugh few times. I loved the ending and i will always remember with pleasure this book!
It starts a bit wobbly and uncertain, but once it finds its way, this is a fantastic story. Intense, great characters, kinda graphic noveley in tone, and addictive.
But pretty violent and some would probably say kinda blasphemous 😆.
I don't usually read this type of book, but it was so good! I was able to delve into their world easily with the descriptive entailed in the book. Going to another dimension of our world. What a great treat this was.
Great read! It is definitely a page turning fantasy full of twist and turns, different realities and realms. The characters are each great in their own ways. I definitely recommend reading this one!
A fast-paced absolute thriller. If you like dark fantasy and thrillers, you will love this. Our main characters Eric and Serena are absolutely amazing. This book is filled with all kinds of creatures, demons, and an amazing journey.
This book was full of so much imagination and creativity! The characters taking on a life of their own. Cant wait to see what else this author puts out.
Pulls you in from the start! Great details, tense with many surprising moments and twists and turns! A must read for thrill seekers looking for a book that they won't want to put down!
Eric Wrathburn has battled something deep within all his life. An unforgettable adventure awaits as Eric, Serena, and the twins. Hiraeth a place where shadows lurk around every corner. Answers Eric seek could be more than he expects.
When you are introduced to Hiraeth its described as a place that was magical and beautiful. Families filled the streets making unforgettable memories. Unfortunately dangerous creatures have taken over. Hiraeth then reminds me of Hill Valley in Back to the Future when Biff runs it. A place you have to look the part and blend in.
I loved how the descriptions brought each character and the world to life. Haley thoughtfully planned each step of the way. Characters from their looks, the they move, and personality. The use of creatures and powers at just the right moments. This isn't just reading a book or story this is stepping into Hiraeth where a life changing journey awaits.
When Serena visits London for the first time as a travel writer, she never expected the chaos that ensued. She must work with Eric Wrathburn and travel to his world to restore order. The journey will challenge both and they will meet others along the way who may help or hinder the quest. Serena and Eric must make their way to the city of Hiraeth to save its citizens.
I’m not usually a fan of fantasy, but the rich characters and world really draw you in!
Wrathburn is one of those books that grabs you by the imagination and drags you into the dark—grinning the whole way.
Meet Eric Wrathburn: wildly gifted, deeply tormented, and 100% not your average hero. He’s been chosen to save the hidden city of Hiraeth (think magical and mysterious AF), but there’s a catch—he’s also battling a sinister voice that’s been living rent-free in his head since birth. Creepy? Yes. Intriguing? Absolutely.
Enter Serena Catskill, a travel writer who thought she was just popping into London for the sights… and ends up neck-deep in Eric’s strange, twisted world where mirrors lie and shadows whisper. Their chemistry crackles, the world-building is gorgeously eerie, and the tension? Chef’s kiss.
Hayley Bernard-Ryan’s writing is sharp, immersive, and just unhinged enough to keep you wide-eyed at 2 a.m. The pacing is tight, the characters are layered and unforgettable, and the vibe is pure dark fantasy meets psychological horror—with a splash of emotional depth that hits hard.
Bottom line: Wrathburn is a wild, weird, and wonderfully wicked ride. If you like your fantasy dark, your heroes damaged, and your fiction with a side of fear—you need this book. 🖤✨
Ready to dive into the dark, magical world of Hiraeth? Trust me, you won’t want to come up for air.
From the very first chapter when a monster attacks the Savoy Hotel in London this hooked me and didn’t let go until the very end. American travel writer Serena Catskill meets Eric Wrathburn as he tries to warn a hotel of danger only for said danger to suddenly explode onto the scene. From there Serena goes down the rabbit hole as she becomes entangled in Eric’s world of clones, monsters and fairies. Eric, Serena and twins Lucas and Logan must travel to the lost city of Hiraeth to save Eric’s sister, but with Eric developing some rather dark and unusual powers will they survive what’s coming? As I said at the beginning this was an enjoyable fantasy read and it was an imaginative take on fairy tales. I loved the interaction between Eric and Serena and thought they had real chemistry and found it amusing how calmly Serena took her new circumstances and didn’t lose her head over it which you do find some characters do in other fantasy tales like this. I look forward to reading more from this author.
