THE ANCIENT KINGDOM OF ALCEDON, THE SUN-BLESSED REALM WHICH HAS KNOWN ONLY PEACE FOR GENERATIONS, NOW BESET BY BLOODY REBELLION SPARKED BY THE EMERGENCE OF AN ANCIENT EVIL…
Into this troubled land comes Guyime, legendary ravager king of the north made immortal by the demonic sword he carries. Leading his band of sword bearers, Guyime must prevent the arch-demon Kalthraxis claiming the Warlord’s Tulwar, the last of the seven demon cursed blades. To do so he is forced to ally himself with the King of Alcedon and lead his army onto the dreaded Road of Storms, to fight a war that may cost all their lives and seal the fate of the world…
Continuing the epic saga of The Seven Swords, The Road of Storms is a compelling adventure of war and intrigue from the New York Times bestselling author of the Raven’s Shadow and The Covenant of Steel trilogies.
Anthony Ryan was born in Scotland in 1970 but spent much of his adult life living and working in London. After a long career in the British Civil Service he took up writing full time after the success of his first novel Blood Song, Book One of the Raven’s Shadow trilogy. He has a degree in history, and his interests include art, science and the unending quest for the perfect pint of real ale.
FFS, I did it again! I don't know why I thought it's the last one; it isn't. And if the previous ones had closure, each of them ending with finding a sword, this one stops right in the middle of the action! I hate when this happens.
Aside from my annoyance, the novella is good - not as good as the others because it's slower, being just half the story. Preparation for battle have never been a favorite of mine. This should have been an indication that is not the last, but I didn't make the connections.
“Mercy is not always a kindness. That man has a lifetime of nightmares to look forward to, more than enough to balance the scales ”.
“So many centuries od wind and rain, yet I see scant of degradation”.
“Hatred for yourself. Always so much more of a delight to savour”.
This seems to be the penultimate book in the series (Seven swords = seven books, I think?) and a lot of things come to a head here.
In the previous book, we discovered the purpose of the seven blades. Well, of the six blades that are destined to stop the first blade ever forged. In this book, Guyime and his companions are trying to do just that, and if they have to cut through twenty thousand people to do so, then so be it.
I love that we visit yet another new place in this intricately created world... and wreak havoc to it per usual. As one of the other characters in this book mentions, death and destruction follow the cursed blades, wherever they go. It is sad that their target manages to slip through their fingers in the end, but this makes me want to read the last book in the series even more. Also glad that Seeker is finally free of the Morningstar. She was becoming rather one-dimensional while she owned it.
My only complaint is that even thought this book is about the same length as the others in the series, it feels longer. The middle part dragged a little, at least in my opinion. But don't get me wrong, it's still a fast and enjoyable read to spend a weekend with.
PS: I received an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 6th book in the Seven Swords novella series. If you're a fan of back talking swords, a group of misfits on a quest and a writer who knows how to write an action scene, this series is for you.
Qué historia tan buena!! Esta es la penúltima aventura de Guyime (en teoría) y la he sufrido desde el principio. Para mí ha sido una gran mejora del libro anterior y pinta muy bien para el final. No me aguanto!!
Originally planned as a six book series, this turns out to be the penultimate volume of a 7-book series! The Swords are all together, the battle has begun . . .
TL;DR: I loved the last half of this. The first felt just a bit slow, but I loved that last half. Source: NetGalley! Thank you so, so much!
Plot: We’re getting so close, SO close to the end here and the battle scenes keep getting more wild. Characters: We actually got a bit more of our two newest characters in this which I liked but we still got plenty of our favorites. Setting: Yet another new setting, this one was a plains type of kingdom with a cursed road and some rebel forces to track down. Fantasy: We didn’t get as much as far as setup for the world but we saw a lot of great magic swords being magical. That was the huge win for me.
Thoughts:
Anthony Ryan continues his Seven Swords series with The Road of Storms which is going to lead us to our final confrontation. There isn’t a whole lot I can say about this particular volume without spoilers but let’s see what we can do.
This one has our band of not-so-merry adventurers crossing a haunted and cursed mountain range in pursuit of one of the two last swords they need to complete the Seven Swords and banish the demons that are trapped within back to hell (and the one that is attempting to bring hell to earth). I can’t say the creepy factor was exceptionally strong by Mr. Ryan continues to dazzle with his use of battle scenes. They continue to get bigger and badder in the best way, especially considering the power and abilities of our swords and friends.
If you’re following the series this is just as strong as the rest. We get a lot more character involvement from some favorites and our newest sword bearer from last book gets some shaping out which I enjoyed. I continue to say this is one of my favorite series currently running and I’m pumped for the last book!
Now that our heroes have more information they are off to save the world from a demon takeover. Good but not quite as good as some of the stories in the series.
The ancient kingdom of Alcedon, never at truly at peace, is under rebellion once again. Adjacent to a sun-washed steppe awash with horse lords and clan warfare, the two are only accessible via two points: the highland road, and the road of storms. But the rebellion has faltered, leaving the land ruined, ravaged, and ransacked. Miles from the capital, the rebels have turned tail, marching instead into the steppes with all haste.
Into this Guyime and his party ride.
Five swords collected, one still at large, though an unstoppable rebel leader that commands unerring loyalty in his followers is a good place to look. Especially when a foreign witch is said to travel at his side, having ensnared him in her spell. Unfortunately, the army has an insurmountable lead.
Unless, of course, the party traverses the road of storms, a grand highway through the mountains cursed by the blood of thousands. To do this, they must first ally with a dying king, persuade his only daughter to guide them, and amass an army capable of not only standing against the rebel captain, but also defeating him in open combat.
An unlikely event if ever there were one. Yet they have little choice.

One of the best current high fantasy series out there keeps getting better. Standing just short of 900 pages in full, this series of novellas has finally built itself into a true epic. I’m a big fan of the series: from its exotic locations to its episodic format, from its contained stories to its continual advancement of the overarching plot, from its characters to its deep lore, from… pretty much everything back to everything else.
What is probably the penultimate entry in the series delivers in a big, big way. The ending is a bit sudden, but everything else is—well, if you liked any of the books thus far, it’s—more of the same, only better. The characters and their interactions. The contained and overarching plots both. The places and people and backstory and lore. Even the pacing is good, which is unusual for a novella.
TL;DR
Pretty much: if you’ve read any of the previous books in the series AND liked them, you should like this. It’s the strongest tale in the series, and comes (likely) right before the end. The characters, lore, plot, pacing—all are great. The ending is a tad clipped, but otherwise there’s nothing to fault about it. Another great episodic story, but one out of a miniseries that knows the end is nigh; already some loose ends have been tied up, and more are coming together. Will you be there to watch when they do?
What’s the story about: As the saga of The Seven Swords reaches toward conclusion, the tension is palpable because the need to find Ekiri is immense. The band must go to war in order to try and stop the Desecrator from finding the Infernus Gate.
The Road of Storms will satisfy any reader of this series as it showcases the best aspects these novellas have to offer. It utilizes all the buildup and excitement from previous adventures while also telling a compelling narrative by itself that is effectively original and thoroughly developed. Ryan showcases building tension with a precise timing in the overall story that pays off to a splendid degree as well as utilizing the band of mighty characters to perfection in this short epic of war. I found myself unable to stop after the halfway point and this one results in a climax that truly thrills. Besides the fact that this one stops with a clipped ending, I’m very excited to see how this series concludes in the final story!
I received an ARC for this book from netgalley. I'm going to try to read it even though I haven't read the previous five novellas.
I would very much love the chance to read them all in order as I love Anthony Ryan, but the prices for the physical books are outrageous and none of them are on kindle unlimited. If anyone knows where to find this series at a reasonable price, I'd be very grateful:)
Full disclosure I won an advanced release copy in a giveaway.
However, I have been greatly enjoying this series so far and this latest installment lives up to the fun adventure, and great and very compact writing that still manages to convey great atmosphere, do a reasonable amount of character development for the important characters of the other books in the series.
I am sure you can find a detailed synopsis of the series and this book elsewhere, but if you have been enjoying the series so far, this installment will not disappoint, bringing our main character and the band of demon possessed blade carrying companions he has gathered another step closer to the end goal, but at the same time leaving them with a lot of ground still to cover.
If you have not yet tried this series I can definitely recommend it, these are short reads which is a nice change from a lot of the popular fantasy series that frequently have installments with page counts exceeding 500-600 pages easily, yet still provide a lot of adventure, action and excitement.
7 / 10 The 6th and penultimate book of the series continues the story and adventure of our protagonists without any huge surprises. By now, we should expect Anthony Ryan to switch theme once again for this novella and that's exactly what he does. This time it's military fantasy, with many opposing armies and battles of grander scale. Since his first book published (Blood Song), Ryan has shown great ability to set up, resolve and write about big battles and he doesn't disappoint here either. My small complaints (and rating point deductions) come mostly from a slight fatigue from the characters. They have started to feel a bit stagnant, predictable and trite at times. Also, the continuing nature of the plot, or rather the way it's perpetuated, has started to feel slightly incredulous. But, all in all, this is another very enjoyable novella which set the scene for the final book and the ultimate resolution of the adventure. 7 / 10
The group have arrived in the kingdom of Alcedon where they must travel the Road of Storms in order to find and stop a rebellion turned demonic thrall. The leader of the rebellion has acquired a tulwar cursed with a great demon who is aiding the Desecrator in their quest to open the Infernus Gate and destroy the world of humanity. Guyime and his group of misfits must reach the location of the Infernus Gate before the Desecrator does, but the path they must take is filled with peril and death.
Yet another great entry into this series. I quite enjoy the world building and the fast-paced clip of the story. It feels like our unlikely heroes are nearing the end of their quest. Looking forward to the seventh (and perhaps final?) installment.
The Road of Storms by Anthony Ryan(Seven Swords #6)- Guyime and his ragtag followers arrive in Alcedon, a beautiful country now ravaged by an Arch-Demon, Kalthraxis, who is there to get the seventh demon sword. To stop him and retrieve the cursed sword, Guyime and company must join the King of Alcedon and travel the Road of Storms to meet their foe and save the world or die trying. Anthony Ryan pulls out all the stops here for a tense and bloody conflict. Don’t miss it! Thanks NetGalley for this exciting ARC.
The Road of Storms is another superb entry in the Seven Swords series by Anthony Ryan. And is well worth the read.
This time out, our protagonists have to lead an army along the titular Road of Storms, as the continue to chase the Desecrator and hope to rescue Ekari. Along the way, they will face danger, and risk death to achieve their goals. And we get a small glimpse at just why Guyime is called the Ravager.
Loving the series so far. Highly recommended. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
The recent addition to the Seven Swords series represents an exceptional continuation of Anthony Ryan's work. Ryan demonstrates remarkable literary craftsmanship and narrative expertise, consistently maintaining reader engagement through unpredictable plot developments. Each novella in the collection offers distinct characteristics and narrative approaches while maintaining cohesion within the broader series. The anticipation for subsequent installments speaks to the compelling nature of Ryan's storytelling technique and world-building capabilities.
THE ROAD OF STORMS is the sixth installment a fantasy series that uses evil to fight evil. At times, it reminded me of Lord of the Rings, but mostly, I found myself thinking of Dungeons&Dragons. I found it to be good, solid writing, but to me, the story had little originality to it. I have not read any of the previous stories and at times felt I should have to fully appreciate some of the relationships, such as between Ekiri and her mother.
Bwaah…The much vaunted tale ended in disappointment
The series with so much promise and it felt that each subsequent installment further diminished its allure. But even then I was surprise at the disappointing end to the last book in the series (or so I assumed when I saw it marked as 6/6). It seems to be extremely commercialized, each installment about the size of a novella. Hope the next installment will restore my faith in Anthony Ryan’s excellent gravitas in this genre
Big Anthony Ryan fan but this particular series seems to have got weaker as its gone on. It reminds me of certain TV shows where, after a period of time, all the characters assume too much importance and therefore the story gets a bit lost making sure they all get their moment...and often meaning they do not develop. Hes a great writer so this was an easy enough read but it felt like the series should be drawn to a conclusion.
I thought this was going to be the last in the series, thinking I’m going to miss reading the adventures of Guyime, Seeker, Lexius, Ultria Orsena, Master Druid Lorweth, Sir Anselm Challice, Shavalla, on their quest to find Ekiri and stop the demon in her knife from opening the door to hell.
Such a great mini series. Each one has been its own enjoyable ride while also building on the main plot.
My only minor gripe in this one is there seemed no real advancement for any of the other characters (personality or relationships with their demons). Not something the story needed, would just be neat.
One of my all time favourite series'. The Road of Storms delivers everything you'd expect from this motley team who wield demonic swords. Edge of the seat stuff and how Anthony Ryan manages to pack so much in is astounding. I love the pace, I love the characters, I love the writing. It's brilliant.
It's a great epic story full of fantastic battles and some excellent scenes. The short format here actually worked to this stories strengths, which helped with the pacing being propelled at a break neck pace.
This is not the last book. It ends on a cliffhanger, so hopefully, we get to see the conclusion soon.
Anthony Ryan is building a world through a short story collection. I found that book six the road of storms didn't really answer many questions or resolve the conflicts. The book ended up leaving a lot more to be desired. I just had a hard time staying engaged with the story.
Just thank you for such a good read. This book really stretched the imagination with undead, raised gods, and magical swords. Absolutely loved it. Best book in the series so far.
In many ways as strong as its excellent predecessors. Needs to focus a little bit more on the end game now though, it can't delay things for much longer.
