Struggling actor Rick Thornton is on a downward spiral. Once a celebrated stage and screen star, scandal and heartbreak caused the roles to dry up. Persuaded by his agent to take a temp job as Santa at the local mall to get himself back in the game, he's hit rock bottom.
Budding actor Jayden Collins is fighting to fund his drama school education. With no family to turn to, he’s left alone in his university digs over the Christmas holidays. But he’s landed the best temp job ever—playing the elf at the local mall’s grotto, spreading joy and gifts to the children. Especially as he’ll be starring opposite the Rick Thornton.
But Rick is a cynical, bitter shell of his former self, drowning his sorrows in alcohol and Jayden soon learns the truth behind the never meet your heroes. As complaints stack up, threatening to close the grotto, Jayden and Rick must join forces to keep it open. Along the way, they uncover more about each other than meets the eye.
Beneath the glittering wonderland of festivities in London, Jayden and Rick are drawn together by more than just necessity. In each other’s company, they find solace, understanding, and an unexpected spark of romance, giving them both a newfound hope for the future.
But when Christmas is all wrapped up, will Santa still need his playful little elf?
All Wrapped Up is an Age Gap, Grumpy/Sunshine, Found Family steamy standalone MM holiday romance featuring a washed-up actor spiralling out of control and a care-experienced happy-go-lucky drama student desperate to change his fate.
Brought up in a relatively small town in Hertfordshire, C F White managed to do what most other residents try to do and fail—leave.
She eventually settled for pie and mash, cockles and winkles and a bit of Knees Up Mother Brown to live in the East End of London; securing a job and creating a life, a home and a family.
She writes gritty British based stories about imperfect men falling in love against the odds and has been accused of sprinkling a bit of humour into them from time to time too.
I have never read so many Elf puns, or so much Santa themed dirty talk 😂
I really enjoyed Jayden and Rick's grumpy/sunshine relationship, especially because they were both ready to go all in almost immediately but held back because that's not what you're 'supposed' to let someone know!
Also liked the little cameo from Devon, Jay and Seb's fostered/adopted son from the District Line series - still one of my favourite series!!
Definitely got me in the festive mood!
***** I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review
Oh my goodness. I've just finished this book, and I'm sitting in a coffee shop waiting for Matthew to finish shopping, but I had to write this review before I forgot what I wanted to say.
This was an utterly perfect age gap Christmas story with two men who didn't look like they fit, who suddenly did. I absolutely loved Jaden, he'd overcome so much in his life to become such a positive person. And Rick was just awesome, so beaten down but climbing out to be a better man.
It's a complete stand-alone, so there's no extra characters that you need to worry about, and friends and a family play a big part in the story, which is my absolute favourite thing.
C.F. White has written a real heartwarmer with All Wrapped Up. This sweet, age gap, hurt/comfort romance has all the right feels for a holiday. So grab your cocoa or a rich glass of red, and enjoy!
White always writes steamy romances (you can count on that!), and All Wrapped Up is on the lighter side, which was just what I needed to kick of the 2024 holiday season.
an advanced reader copy of All Wrapped Up was graciously provided by the author for the purpose of my honest review, all opinions are my own
This was cute, and I liked all the puns, but I found myself unable to really connect with the characters. Probably a me issue, as everyone else loved it.
Rick is a forty-year-old faded actor without work, drinking and smoking way too much, and lying to his proud parents about non-existent roles. There was a time when he had jobs, friends, a social life, lovers, a future, but now, he’s lonely and grumpy. Betrayal broke him down.
Jayden is a broke, final-year drama student at ULC, brought up in children’s homes and foster placements. Even where everyone goes home for the holidays, Jayden stays at the U during the summers and the holidays, he has no place to call home. He’s the sunshine in this story.
The grumpy Santa and the ever-optimistic elf, the elf pokes the bear… ehh Santa. They are soothing for each others battered hearts and souls!
“Last Christmas” is a theme here, an emotional one.
With every chapter we get to know these men better, their characteristics, their ups and downs, their past, the awful amount of hurt both been through, their present and we have a look at their future, because dang they deserve and beautiful future together. This author writes the best stories, with rich layered characters and emotions all over the pages.
OMG!!! I loved this book so much, Jayden is the most amazing MC Rick is an actor in disgrace after a relationship left him without a job, without a career. To relaunch his career, his agent gets him a job as Santa Claus in a decrepit shopping mall about to close. Jayden, an aspiring college student who works cleaning up the same shopping mall, takes the job as an elf When they meet, Jayden recognizes Rick as his idol and while Jayden is sunshine, Rick is grumpy. They start with strangers, acquaintances, friends and hooking up Can they be something more?
I really, REALLY like Jayden - not such a fan of Rick (shocking, I know (not)). I want to give Jayden a hug so badly, he puts up with so much and tries so hard and he's just so GOOD. C.F. White did do a good job of making me come around to liking Rick, giving him character growth and redemption in a very believable way. He's the perfect example of the phrase "Hurt people hurt people."
I won't spoil anything, but the ending to this book was the absolutely best ending and the most satisfying (even though, yes, it was kind of predictable and I saw it coming from several chapters away, it was still THE BEST).
This was honestly so cute! It had so many Christmas puns that of course I absolutely loved. And age gap is one of my all time favorite tropes so a Christmas age gap book is right up my alley.
This is the first audiobook I've listened to narrated by Piers Ryman and it was so well done!
Rick is an actor who has found himself very much down on his luck. Unfortunately a relationship with a fellow actor turned sour and the other man spread some nasty rumors. Now the only work Rick can find is as a Mall Santa.
Jayden has spent his life, well most of it, in care so when the Christmas holidays roll around, unlike all his fellow students he has no family and no home to go to. Holidays for him will be in his student room on campus and working as a holiday Elf to make ends just about meet.
Should we feel sorry for both men? A seasoned actor reduced to playing Santa and a budding one playing his elf? Yes and no. Jayden isn't going to let his spirits drp[ if he can help it... He needs the money after all. And when he finds out who is Santa he couldn't be happier - one of his favourite actors. It is when he sees the state Rick is in that things could turn bad but he keeps up the positivity, determined to make sure Rick plays the role properly for the children. As Jayden gradually begins to improve things for Rick the two find there is something bubbling between them. There are a few arguments owing to misinterpretation of circumstances but it is a relatively low-anst story and Rick's parents are the best!
We do feel for Jayden despite his upbeat approach to life, and it is wonderful to discover that it will pay off for him, for them both. C F White writes with flair, humour, compassion. It can be hard to make a santa and his elf in a Christmas mall story work, it does here. The characters are incredibly realistic, so is the setting and some of the events. The matter of the care system and also the actor ex are dealt with perfectly, not too much detail is given but enough to make them part of the story and leave us certain C F White has not used them superfluously.
Wrap up under something cosy and settle down for a very happy Christmas story.

Sweet, lovely, and just the right amount of fluffy. Also had some heavy, angsty bits to give it some nice weight and depth. Pleasantly surprised at how well-written it was. My heart ached for both Rick and Jayden. They had both been through it, in very different ways, and I loved how perfect they were for one another, once they got over the angsty bumps. Plenty of Christmas spirit and a very lovely HEA. AND the villain got his just desserts, thank Baby Jesus.

M/M Christmas Grumpy/Sunshine Age gap Found family Rich/poor Slow burn
Arc audio review
Story = 2.5 Narration = 5 stars
This is not a typical happy, light and fluffy Christmas story. Both men are coping with painful pasts.
Rick is a famous actor that can't get any bookings due to a prior scandal a year ago. He very reluctantly accepts the job as a mall Santa. Picture a sarcastic, cynicle, grump that slips out a flask when nobody's watching. I suppose we are to assume they were desperate when hiring him, lol.
Jayden is an acting student. Due to growing up in foster care, he has no family and is spending Christmas alone on campus. He decides to take the job of elf to practice his role play and spread cheer to kids. He is very aware of who Rick is and has that instant crush one gets when meeting a gorgeous actor but he is quickly left caught off guard by Rick's real life behavior/personality.
I found the writing a bit frustrating. By 50% we still don't know what Rick did that was so bad to get fired and ostracized. For me that made for not knowing how I feel about him. Also, he bounced back and forth from saying hes had no income for a year and cupboards were bare so he has to be a Santa, to showing off his pent house and ordering $100 drinks. It didn't make any sense to me
Jayden was a sweet kid and I empathized with him being in foster care and wanting to make it through school despite his dire financial situation and always feeling alone and abandoned. Along for his desire to make other children happy and his sunny personality, he was very charming. He was also a total pushover, and it really drove me crazy.
Overall I didn't really care for either of the MCs who complained alot about their probs but kept making bad choices to not better their circumstances. We finally do find out what happened to Rick around the 3rd quarter but by then I had totally lost interest. I didn't mind their interactions but I felt no chemistry between them other than the few spicy moments. It was like they were just casual friends.
It could be just me, the book has high ratings but there are so many just them chatting moments and not much else, that bored me. That boring plot, along with the frustrating characters, no chemistry, unnecessary angst and very awkwardly written steamy scenes is a big nope for me. The ending was sweet so I guess there's that.
The narrator did a fantastic job. He had a pleasant reading voice and English accent. He kept a good pace/flow. He expressed all the emotions wonderfully and brought the story to life. He gave everyone character, not just the 2 MCs their own distinct voice that suited them all perfectly and made the story easy to follow. It was a great listen.
Wow, what a ride! This made me really feel all the feels. From gloom and despair to hope.
I am honest here when I say I read in the summary: bigger age gap, grumpy sunshine, Christmas, playing Santa and elf... I immediately was: oh yes please, sign me up! That's right up my alley. Something happy and fun. Yeah, I managed to ignore the other infos about struggling, and spiralling out of control etc. That's MY mistake.
When I started reading it, a gloom settled over me the more I got to know about Rick's and Jayden's situations. With those difficult and heavy backgrounds of our MCs it's no wonder that for a big part of the story the mood was very sombre. And honestly I should have expected it if I'd've read the summary careful. My bad.
The book may not have been what I personally hoped for – not the fault of the book – but it was still entertaining and all in all, a good read.
The MCs pasts tugged at my heartstrings and it was often heartbreaking to read about their circumstances. I wanted to hug them – yes, both, because reading about Jayden being all alone in his dorm-room was not what I wished for him.
Jayden may have been more of a happy sunshiny guy all in all but even he couldn't escape his own loneliness and the gloom that sometimes settled over him (no family, alone on campus for Christmas, money is very tight, therefore often hungry etc)
And then there is Rick - a fallen star even if not necessary through his own fault. He's bitter and grumpy, nearly an alcoholic. Partially understandable to be honest. He's broken in some ways, nearly giving up on himself.
When I first saw those two together they did not seem like a match made in heaven. But Jayden, more of an old soul himself, managed to breath new life into Rick and gave him some kind of purpose and hope for the future. They managed to build a solid relationship after some hiccups.
Really CF managed wonderfully to get the story turned around and let these two find what they needed - each other, a solid relationship, love and a new vision as well as purpose in life. Well deserved after those two went through the wringer in their pasts.
So I can still say even if it was not the fluffy, only happy story I was after, it was a solid, well done and entertaining read that had me invested in the story and made me feel all the feels.
Btw I loved Rick's parents. They were simply wonderful, supporting people. I adored them. And that 'the baddie' got what was coming for him was satisfying to see.
All Wrapped Up By: C F White Narrated by: Piers Ryman
I immensely enjoyed this wonderful story, and I am not sure how, but it is my first book by C.F. White, and she is now on my radar, so it won’t be my last. I adored the two lead characters, Rick Thornton, a down-on-his luck out of work actor, and a bona fide grump, through and through, and then we have Jayden Collins, a college student barely getting by and making ends meet, but full of cheer and sunshine, younger and his complete opposite, or so you would think. Rick needs a job just to keep himself busy and to stop wallowing in his grief and bitterness over what he lost, basically top billing and his acting career. The best his agent could find was a gig playing mall Santa Claus and meeting with kids, probably his hardest acting gig since he needs to act jolly, when he is anything but. Jayden enjoyed being an elf and greeting the children, and as a theater major, it thrilled him to meet and be working with Rick Thornton, except he turned out to be a disappointment at first. Rick finds there is something about Jayden that brings out the good in him, and despite their age difference, with Rick being much older, they really clicked. There is a nice depth to these characters, and I enjoyed watching them get to know each other and learning more about them, their pasts, which I found intriguing, especially Jayden and what made them into the people they were. There is never a dull moment in this book, and I loved how it all played out, with the perfect balance of drama, angst, heartwarming moments, heartfelt emotions and a slow burn, but so worth the wait romance. C.F. White, thank you for this fabulously captivating story, the emotional rollercoaster ride and yay to a found family.
🎧📚🎧 Piers Ryman did a fabulous job bringing these characters to life, giving each their own distinct sound, making it easy to follow along and tell who was who. He was spot-on with his portrayal of the characters, embodied their personalities completely and was believable in each role. Setting the ideal tone for the story, he conveys all his characters’ emotions in his performance, has you feel each one. Ryman is a versatile voice artist and a captivating storyteller whose performance keeps you hooked the entire time.
I received an advance listener copy through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review. 4.5* Loved it. I’m not even a Christmas romance person and I still got ‘All Wrapped Up’ in the story. CF White always drills down into why MCs behave how they do. Rick, in particular, struggles with failure and makes it everyone’s problem. He’s got damage and, in time, we see the nuance of it. Jayden puts on a bright, shining face for the kids going to Santa’s Workshop because he wants to give them the childhood magic he never received. It’s heart-wrenching and amazing. Throughout the book, there’s a focus on kids in care and it gives the story a grounded emotional weight. Christmas vs the foster care system.
That’s not to say this is a heavy book, but rather, a well-balanced book. It’s overflowing with elf and Santa puns. 😂 Jayden is the sunshine to Rick’s grumpy Claus. They push and pull at each other to focus on the kids, and eventually, on comforting each other, as well. When Rick and Jayden are alone together, their dynamic is caretaking + consent + praise and it’s fantastic. With Jayden, Rick manages to let go of what weighs him down and focus on treating Jayden as a treasure. For his part, Jayden continues to see Rick as a marvel—a celebrated actor, a sexy silver fox, and a fiery lover. The trick is making each other believe the hype!
The book has a TAB (third act b…), which comes on the heels of a shocking twist in the story. The truth of Rick’s fall from grace is revealed and it hits hard. We finally understand.
With all of that setup, the ending is honestly pretty magical. It’s a fully-realized vision of their future, one where they heal their traumas, pursue their dreams, and lift each other up. It’s heartfelt, but not too cheesy or sentimental. As with the rest of the book, the balance is just right.
Narration: Really good. The distinguished, gravelly baritone is perfect for Rick. The urban London accent for Jayden sounded convincing to my American ear. I was always able to differentiate the MCs, which is key. Sometimes, I was unsure about background narration vs Rick’s spoken dialogue because the voices are quite similar. Occasionally, I had trouble sorting between Jayden and his friends. The accent for Jayden’s best friend sounded a bit wobbly in the beginning. Overall, I consider these minor issues. I enjoyed the narration and would recommend it to others.
This is the first book I’ve read from C.F. White and it surley won’t be the last.
⭐️ 4,5/5 🌶️ 3/5 (moderate steam)
All Wrapped Up is an age-gap festive romance between struggling actor Rick Thornton and drama student Jayden Collins, who land a gig playing Santa and his Elf at a mall.
The writing in this book is genuinely excellent — such a breath of fresh air after DNFing two books in a row due to bad writing. White has crafted a really well made novel that pulls on your heartstrings!
Jayden and Rick have a grumpy/sunshine dynamic that I really enjoyed. Rick is bitter, drinking his sorrows away, while Jayden is very cheerful and witty. There are so many elf and santa jokes in this book that I found hilarious and even laughed out loud a couple of times!
”I am just a bit santa-mental”
The spicy scenes were really well written. I enjoyed how important consent was to Rick. It wasn’t just sex, they made love, and it was so nice seeing how cared for Jayden felt.
Rick’s character growth was really satisfying to see and so sweet too see how much he cares for Jayden. Rick’s parents were so sweet as well.
I haven’t really watched any hallmark christmas movies but I feel like this book was really giving me those vibes in the best way possible! It was very cozy and heartwarming and a perfect read during christmas time.
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did an amazing job! I really enjoyed him having an authentic (at least to me) yorkshire and english accents. His narration elevated these characters even further and it was just a great audiobook experience!
Thank you GRR for giving me the audiobook to review! This is my honest review.
(very minor spoiler but i was kicking my legs when we found out that Jayden had no money but still bought Rick coffee)
You know that moment when you see a random audiobook from an author you never heard about and you say: "ehhh...why not?" This was me with "All wrapped up". I saw this and I wanted to give it a try.
God, I am so happy I took the chance with this one. The story C.F White wrote for Rick and Jayden was beautiful, with a lil bit of sad, but a lot of festive cheer.
"Two lonely souls, entwined in a Shakespearean tragedy, finding solace and connection in a rundown theater." This quote describes this book the best.
Rick and Jayden met in a moment in time when bith of them felt like they were lost, Rick more than Jayden tho, but J was everything Rick needed and more. The relationship between has a jump-start, but what do you expect when two people who lost everything find each other?
This is a story about loss, helplessness, loneliness, but it is also a story about finding hope, finding love, finding companionship when you thought everyone forgot you were even there. It is not a sad story, it really is not, at the end you will feel the magic and importance of love.
It is a Christmas story, sure, but it is also a book that can be read whenever you need a book that feels like a warm hug.
The audiobook was bloody exceptional. Piers Ryman did an amazing job. He didn't just narrated, he acted. He brought these characters to life, and he immersed the listener into this story. It felt like the characters were there in front of your eyes, living their lives for you to see, not in your ears. Spectacular.
This book was a big surprise for me, a beautiful one and I am repeating myself by saying this but I am really happy I give it a try.
If you are looking for a beautiful story to read this holiday season, then "All wrapped up" should be on your list.
5✨️
p.s. all those corny holiday puns where hilarious 😂
I love CF White. I just adore her books and have listened to all her audios. When I saw this one, I knew I had to listen to it. OMG, I’m so glad I did.
Okay, so I have a degree in theatre with a specialization in stage management. When I learned Rick was a stage actor and Jayden was in theatre school, my heart soared. I just knew I was going to love this story.
And I did!
Grumpy Rick’s agent has issued him an ultimatum – play mall Santa for Christmas or come the new year, he’s looking for a new agent. (Or something like this.)
Jayden, a kid who aged out of care and then managed to get into theatre school, is alone in his residence for Christmas. He has no family. Nowhere to be. But he does have a kick-ass job as an elf. He meets Rick and is bowled over – and not just by the boozy breath.
Rick doesn’t want to play Santa and almost blows it until he realizes Jayden’s livelihood is on the line. So he gets his crap together. And then, when the fog clears, he sees Jayden in a whole new light.
Thus begins a lovely romance until Rick’s past barrels into the lineup of kids and parents waiting to see Santa.
And it all falls apart.
Man – that was brutal.
But the magic of Christmas had to come to the rescue…right?
Now, this is a CF White romance, so I got my happy ending. Even better, honestly, as I’m in love with the epilogue.
Just what I needed today – a Christmas story to make me smile.
I also adore Piers Ryman – he’s just so perfect for CF’s beautiful words. They make magic together and this audio is proof of that. Total recommend and I plan a relisten next year.
CF White’s All Wrapped Up is a perfect example of why I’ve been a long-time fan of her writing. This grumpy/sunshine, age-gap holiday romance delivers more than the blurb could ever promise—it’s packed with heartfelt moments and unexpected depth.
The story takes a refreshing twist on the usual financial disparity trope. Rick, a once-successful but now down-on-his-luck actor, meets Jayden, an ever-optimistic university student who hasn’t had an easy life. Instead of the typical "wealthy guy saving the poor guy" narrative, it’s Jayden who helps pull Rick back to life. Their dynamic is heartfelt, with Jayden’s relentless positivity and Rick’s guarded vulnerability creating a captivating push-and-pull.
The author masterfully reveals the mystery of Rick’s fall from grace in small, tantalising pieces, keeping you hooked until all is unveiled around the 60% mark. While the tension keeps you engaged, the surrounding story brims with charm, warmth, and the magic of the holiday season.
Rick and Jayden’s path to their happily ever after isn’t without its challenges, but CF White strikes the perfect balance between drama and sweetness. Add in some clever humour—largely courtesy of a mischievous elf—and this book becomes a delightful holiday treat. Full of heart and Christmas spirit, All Wrapped Up is a must-read.
A fun, age-gap, grumpy/sunshine holiday romance that unwittingly pairs a struggling Santa with an aspiring elf. I’m pretty sure neither Rick nor Jayden expected to find love in Santa’s Workshop, but holiday magic has a way of surprising and delighting.
Rick’s an acclaimed Shakespearean actor who finds himself on the outside looking in, his career in shambles after he’s disgraced by scandal. He’s been given one last chance to turn things around if he can give the performance of his life as a mall Santa. Maybe a little unconventional, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Every Santa needs an elf, and Jayden’s just the person for the job. Being promoted to elf is the perfect break for an aspiring theater student, and a welcome hiatus from his usual janitorial duties at the mall. He can’t believe his luck when he discovers Santa is none other than one of his biggest idols.
I very much enjoyed this holiday romp with its emotional entanglements and personal challenges. Learning the full extent to Rick’s downfall was maddening, and I was enraged on his behalf. He deserves so much better, and I appreciate how he grows from accepting his plight to going after what he wants. The same could be said for Jayden, who hasn’t had the easiest start and has overcome so much to get to where he is. How he's managed to maintain his positive outlook is truly amazing.
Age gap romances can sometimes be a challenge for me, because I don’t always feel the MCs are portrayed as equals. In the case of Rick and Jayden, they’re forced together by circumstance, and I never felt they were anything but co-workers making the best of the situation. Seeing the spark between them ignite was sweet, and I was rooting for them the whole way.
*I voluntarily read a complimentary copy of this book*
We get to meet Rick, a distinguished actor who hasn't had a decent role for a year, caused by a lie and a fickle industry, taking on a Santa job as a favour to a friend, he ends up as a Santa in a shopping arcade, this is where we meet Jayden. An Elf to Ricks Santa. Jayden is a uni drama student in his final year, working any job he can to make ends meet. An unlikely pairing and a wonderful story, we have ups and downs, but a HEA. Highly recommend.
This book has depth and compassion, but if you are familiar with CF White's books, you will realise that all her characters have that added extra: they all have a great, believable backstory.
Piers Ryman did a fantastic job narrating this book, and I was entranced throughout. Easy and clear narration. I did speed up to 1.10 on Audible, which is my norm, although Piers is one of the rare narrators I can listen to at normal speed; what an enjoyable experience.

I received this audiobook for free from GRR at my request. My review is my opinion and an honest review - neither the author nor GRR influenced my opinion.
Wrongfully disgraced actor Rick takes on a job as a mall santa never expecting the charming, younger man playing his elf would be so hard to resist. Jayden dreams of acting and is still trying to overcome his rough childhood and poor circumstances, so coaxing a grumpy (and sexy) Santa into spreading holiday cheer is no hardship, but falling for Rick may bring a broken heart instead of happiness for the holidays.
An entertaining holiday story that starts out pretty dreary and depressing but slowly promises glimpses of hope, joy, happiness and love. Jayden was a wonderfully positive character given his hard background and really brings Rick to see all the luck he has had and to appreciate them. There are funny elf puns, references to Wham’s Last Christmas song, and two men that find lust and love during a holiday that could have left them lonely but instead brings them a chance at something special.
Amazing narration that covered different accents, emotional expressions and passionate moments well, really loved this audio. 4.5 rounded up
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun grumpy/sunshine holiday romance. Good world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Jayden and Rick. Jayden has a big heart and is sweet, but he's struggling to make ends meet, desperately needs this job, and is lonely with no family and no one to be around for Christmas. Rick is jaded and bitter as his career has fizzled out and he's desperate to work again and get back on the stage. A mall Santa was not what he wanted and was grumpy and snarky. Jayden was cheerful and friendly with his and the attraction between the two of them sizzled. I liked that Rick stepped up and pushed his inner actor to the surface when he needed to and for Jayden's sake. I liked the dynamic between them and the way their relationship developed.
Piers Ryman did a good job bringing these characters to life. I didn't realize at first, but I'd heard this narrator one time before- he was voicing a Russian alpha-male type- all power and control. I couldn't even tell it was him. I love narrators that have good range. So I was happy to hear more from him. I thought he suited Rick and Jayden well.
This is a cute story from author C.F. White, even with some heavier themes. Rick wants to be back on stage and certainly doesn’t want to be the mall Santa. He has money to carry him, but he wants his career back, after falling for the wrong guy destroyed it. Jayden is used to being alone, but it never gets any easier. Still, he remains positive, even when his funds are low and life alone in the dorms is bleak.
You’ll find the grumpy/sunshine trope here, as despite his background, Jayden remains upbeat and cheerful. He slowly gets Rick to drink more coffee instead of liquor and look toward a plan for his future.
This is a good choice to get you in the holiday spirit a little earlier this year, with just the right amount of elf puns to keep you smiling.

Rick, an established actor, is struggling with his career, so he takes a job as Santa at a mall on the verge of shutdown, hoping to revive his career. Jayden loves helping and putting smiles on the faces of young boys and girls as the elf at Santa’s Grotto, as he wants to ensure they have a better festive experience than he did growing up. Neither Jayden nor Rick expected the other, but they both end up renewing the magic of the holiday season in each other's hearts. I was excited to hear Jayden’s journey after hearing about him in Aaron’s series. I enjoyed all of the holiday banter between Jayden and Rick, and loved how they were both able to engage in some deep soul-searching and healing together. I loved Rick and Jayden’s story, and its focus on family, misconceptions, and following your dreams. I also loved the friendships and side characters, and everything the MCs go through to finally get their HEA. The Elf jokes were a lot of fun.
I loved how Jayden gets past Rick’s walls to the real man behind them, and how Rick starts to come out of himself. Their connection, despite Rick’s determination not to all for his elf, friendship and more is sweet. I loved how the story tone shifts when Rick’s past catches up with him, and how all that is resolved.
Rick’s parents are wonderful, and I loved the small town Christmas vibe, and his plans to give back to the town.
I liked that this world is populated by a mix of good people, those not so great, like Rick’s neighbour, Simeon, and the really awful like Derek, who totally deserves everything karma can throw at him.
Rick and Jayden’s HEA, and the glimpse into their future is a perfect ending to a wonderful read.
This is my favorite book by CF so far! She has gifted us a wonderful story...and not just for the holiday season, but one filled with reminders to be thankful for what we have, all year long.
You can fill in so many 'pithy' sayings that fit... What goes around comes around. You'll reap what you sow. Good things come to those who wait. True love is worth waiting for.
It's too bad that Jayden and Rick have to experience so much pain before they get their HEA.
Of course, as they reminded us, Ebenezer Scrooge had to suffer as well, before he became the man he was at the end of the Christmas Carol.
Be prepared for so much love your heart will brim over. So many sweet moments that your faith in your fellow man will be restored. Rick and Jayden perfectly complimented each other's strengths. Jayden found the family he desperately needed and was able to enrich the lives of others in the process.
Thank you GRR for this ARC. I will be rereading this for many years.
Both Rick and Jayden are struggling with live. Rick once had it Allas an actor but a scandal tanked his career and the only job he can get is being a mall Santa. It is there he meets Jayden. Jayden is alone in life and working to pay for his university tuition, and is hired to be Santa's elf. As an aspiring actor Jayden is excited to meet his idol Rick, but when he does he is disappointed to learn that Rick is cynical, bitter and using alcohol to get through life. Despite Rich's personality, these two start hanging out together and the book is a balance of will they or want they act of feelings. I loved how they supported once another and it is thought that support that love blossomed. Sometimes intense, sometimes funny, this age gap book remind me that love wins and finding our true love can change our lives and help correct the path we are on. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.
This was a great Christmas/holiday vibes read! Being my first CF White book, I didn’t know what to expect, but it was the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and also realistic (because both of our main characters have experienced traumas in the past).
*I received an ALC copy of this book, all opinions are my own*
Jayden was a classic sunshine character, despite growing up bouncing from care home to care home, he still retains his internal optimism and is exactly the bright spot that Rick (our down on his luck thespian) needs during the holiday season.
I also loved how much their relationship focused on mutual care & consent. Despite being shorter story, the foundations of their relationship were laid really well so the epilogue was the perfect ending!
I also really liked the narration by Piers Ryman! I haven’t listened to any books he’s narrated before but I definitely will look for them in the future.
"Does Santa land on the roof because he likes it on top?"
This is the first book I've read or listened to by C F White. The narrator, Piers Ryman, also was new to me and I must say he did a fantastic job with the book.
I had no clue what to expect. This book was so emotional and had me on edge throughout. I thought it was going to be a cute little fluffy Christmas story, boy was I wrong. The cover for the book was so playful, I made a few assumptions. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the story that I listened to. And no, I didn't read the book blurb I'm just not a book blurb kind of person. I saw that flirty Christmas cover and thought, "I want to read and/or listen to that".
Age gap 15+ years, a career in the dumps, a college student just barely getting by, hurt/comfort, so much hurt with little comfort, a cruel self-centered ex, opposites attract, found family
