A cursed lord, a feisty librarian, and their disguised pet dragon.

Being the first librarian in their small town is everything Beatrice Montgomery has ever dreamed of–except no one in town knows what to make of her, or the library. But spending her days surrounded by books is an occupation beyond her wildest dreams, and she'll do whatever it takes to make the library a success.

Lord Alexander Dunham's time is running out. Providing for his estate and the people dependent on him before his curse ruins his life is his first priority--and that means he needs a wife, immediately. Proposing a marriage of convenience to the feisty librarian seems like the perfect he gets a wife, she gets funds for her library, and the sorcerer trying to steal his estate gets nothing.

Even with his lips sealed about the curse, a transforming dragon watching his every move, and a wife who's winning over everyone on their estate, their marriage of convenience should have solved all of Alexander's problems. Unfortunately, he's falling for his wife, and it's causing a new he's no longer willing to die. Can Alexander and Beatrice outwit the most powerful sorcerer in the Northlands, or will Beatrice lose the man she's growing to love?

Gabrielle Landi lives in Southern Indiana with her husband and children and has a soft spot for every stray cat that ends up on her front porch. When she’s not writing, she spends her time chasing children, wishing there was more coffee, and eating chocolate like it’s her job. If she had to write her own love story in tropes, it would include second chance romance and a secret relationship, and would be entirely unbelievable.

4 stars ⭐️ Clean Fiction - Fairytale Retelling

It’s no secret that despite reading a lot of Beauty and the Beast retellings, they are often misses to me and I’ve gotten burned out on that fairytale in the last year. Hence why I was a bit delayed in reading this one, but I am very happy to say that I greatly enjoyed it!

One thing that really made this retelling stand out to me was that our Beauty and Beast characters already know each other—and know each other positively—prior to the marriage proposal and that made a world of difference for me and my enjoyment level! No brooding, mean, social recluse Beast that doesn’t know how to treat people with kindness or even speak to another human. No headstrong Belle that resents being with the Beast and missing her “freedom”. Nope, neither of those and they both had very reasonable thoughts about the marriage that made perfect sense for what they’ve been through. I think it’s fair to say this is now one of my top favorites of this fairytale.

Alexander was such a sweetheart, such a gentleman. Perhaps a little too "written by a woman MMC", but it wasn’t Hallmark level of cheese, so I honestly didn’t care because he was an absolute dear towards her. 🥹

I will say that there was a little too much thinking about kissing and hanging out in the other’s bedroom for my tastes at times, so I would suggest 16/17+ personally for this book, but otherwise it was tooth-aching sweet in the best way. I’m usually incredibly picky on books with the marriage of convenience trope (preferring to out-right avoid them, most often) but this one was definitely on the cleaner side for that trope and I greatly appreciate that!

There’s a bit of suspense because of the plot with the sorcerer and leading up to who-knows-what will happen with him, but it’s honestly more of a minor plotline by the end of the book. Just the last few chapters, so the large majority of the book is pure cuteness. Because of this, the ending was kind of anti-climatic, but I’m not complaining because it was a very cute story overall! Definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series! 💗

Main Content-
Light Christian references with mentions of a priest (for a wedding), praying (not said towards Whom), and a Bible; A mention of the library not having much religious texts.

Alexander appreciates Beatrice treats him like a man and “not some sort of god” (due to his status).

Due to Alexander being cursed to be unable to tell others about an event and the details, there are many mentions of the curse, trying to break it, the sorcerer, magic potions, & dragons; Magic is illegal in this country and while it’s mostly looked at with a negative viewpoint or with suspicion, there is a side character that has the “gift” of learning magic and uses it to help (for the good); A baby dragon is a part of this book; Someone makes magic potions to try to help Alexander (which don’t go as planned); A sorcerer tries to wave his wand and mutter/chant.

No language stronger than “stupid” and “blast”; A mention of a curse being said (but not written out); A bit of eye rolling (mostly teasing).

Being stuck in a snowstorm, almost freezing to death, pain, & passing out (up to a couple sentences).

Beatrice thinks that it’s better when her father isn’t home because he belittles her and overall treats her poorly (it’s noted that he never hurt her, but could be “a bit” cruel at times); Beatrice’s mother left when she was a baby and it makes her concerned that she might do the same to Alexander.

Mentions of Alexander’s parents being murdered in a fire & the murderer (up to a couple sentences in details); Mentions of possible murders happening; Mentions of deaths & grief (including a man for his missing daughter); Mentions of nightmares; Mentions of a tavern; Mentions of gossip & rumors; A few mentions of threats; A few mentions of lies & deceiving; A few mentions of throwing up; A couple mentions of hatred.

1 hand kiss,
1 cheek kiss,
1 forehead kiss,
3 almost kisses (lasting 3-5 sentences each),
1 kiss lasting around 6 sentences,
Wanting to kiss/be kissed (up to a couple sentences); A bit of staring at another’s lips (a sentence).

Touches, Embraces, Dancing, Hand holding, Warmth, Butterflies, Nearness, Smelling, & Noticing (up to a few sentences); Wanting to touch, embrace, & hold hands (up to a few sentences); Blushes; A bit of jealousy.

When proposing to Beatrice, Alexander says he will be “as much or as little of a husband” as she wishes and when she asks about an heir, Alexander says that they can discuss about an heir in a year or so as it’s not something they would be rushing towards.

Beatrice and Alexander are in his room three times (1- she goes there during the night when she hears him having a nightmare and ends up falling asleep sitting up in his bed which leads to blushes in the morning and her trying not to notice his bare chest; There’s a couple mentions of him finding her in his bed of bedchamber after this happens; 2- they spend time together playing a board game on his bed (he is shirtless again, but she goes to her room after the game); 3- the final time, they share a kiss and cuddle, but nothing else is alluded to.

Mentions of kisses, kissing, & almost kisses; A couple mentions of blushes & winks.

This was a short and cute love story. Unfortunately I had similar issues with it as I did the first book that left me wanting.

As with the first book, when the story was doing its own thing I thought it was great. But when it brought in the aspects of the fairytale it was retelling, it felt clumsy to me, with a lot of things not feeling very fleshed out, like they were only there to fit the retelling.

I also kept noticing issues of telling the reader something that didn’t necessarily fit what was being shown. The main example is the “beastliness” of the MMC who everyone thinks of as callous and uncaring, but we never see any reasons why people would think that. He’s very considerate of those around him including his tenants. We’re told he doesn’t smile or joke but we see it pretty regularly. Other instances included the cruelty of the FMC’s father and the “Gaston” character, who both just seem slightly annoying or uncaring but far from the monsters we’re told they are.

Lastly, the climax of the book that everything leads up to is very anticlimactic. To the point where even the MMC thinks so to himself. It made all the lead up feel a little pointless.

The romance is sweet if quite insta-lovey, and the little dragon is obviously adorable though. And it could be easily read in a day, so would be good for a quick, nice palate cleanser.

Thanks to the author for the copy.

Beauty and the Beast turned marriage of convenience! I am here for it😍. Alexander is the grump who doesn’t smile and is betrothed to an evil sorcerer’s daughter. His only way out, marry someone else first. Beatrice, the town librarian accepts his proposal. This book is a cute, cozy read as the couple tries to break the curse with the help of faithful friends and a pet dragon🐉. And of course, in the process fall in love🌹.

3.75⭐️ARC Review: Such a cozy, sweet, and tender fantasy romance. It is based on the story Beauty and The Beast. Except taking place during regency times. In a fantasy world. And it’s a marriage of convenience. Alexander is a Lord. He needs a wife to break a curse. He marries Beatrice. A woman in his employ. She helps him break his curse. That’s it! But really, it was straight up cozy. If you like your books to be cozy with really nothing else to them, this is your book.

I did love the addition of the marriage of convenience to the original fairytale. Beatrice and Alexander were both very likable characters, and I thought they were cute together. Alexander was very kind to her. Wasn’t really a beast in my opinion. Maybe a little grumpy. And Beatrice was a very kind soul who doesn’t take crap from anybody. Those types of female main characters are my favorite. Very capable but not like manly strong ya know? Demure if you will.

The curse being broken and the ending in general were kind of underwhelming. It’s almost like the author didn’t have a well thought out process to the ending and just ended it lol. I mean even the MMC said it was anticlimactic, and I couldn’t agree more. Maybe that’s funny and charming of the author to do. Maybe it was intentional. It’s a little funny. There is the whole build up and then poof. The curse is broken, the wizard is dead, happily ever after.

It was ok. Cute, clean story.

However, it was VERY Anticlimactic. During the entire story, it’s portrayed that the sorcerer was all this powerful being, putting a curse on the MMC and killing his parents, only for the confrontation to last like a second, before he was defeated. 🙄

⭐️ 4.75 stars, rounded up to 5 ⭐️

If you know me, you know I love Beauty and the Beast! This retelling was very different from the others I have read. It had elements of BATB, but did it's own thing as well. The romance was so sweet (a bit insta-love, definitely NO slow burn here) and so were the characters. The world that this series is set in is so cozy and cute. The story was very fast paced, and was very easy to get into for me.

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was really enjoyable to me. I feel like I actually enjoyed this book even a bit more as an audiobook than I would have reading the actual book - it was just so enjoyable this way.

Thank you so much to Gabrielle Landi for the ALC of this book. All opinions in this review are voluntary and my own. 😊

Content: clean romance - a few non-detailed kisses, a woman sits on her husband's bed and one time falls asleep sitting up in the bed (but there is absolutely nothing sexual that happens, it is very clean)

If you like cozy fantasy, marriage of convenience, fairy tale retellings and dragon sidekicks this book is for you!!

I loved the romance! Alexander and Beatrice are a sweet couple.
“It was hard to be upset with anything when Beatrice Montgomery smiled at you like that.”
It’s the perfect read if you’re looking for a sweet and cozy fairytale retelling. I instantly fell in love with all the characters and the story! But the ending was a bit anticlimactic. I felt like there was a lot of build up and anticipation for such a small event.
No spice or swearing.
I’m thankful I got to be apart of the ARC team!

What a lovely and cozy novella. It was a sweet and fast read, with loveable characters and a new take on a familiar story. I enjoyed the story, and as often happens with novellas, I felt it was over too quickly. I wanted more time to see Beatrice and Alexander’s story develop. And I wasn’t expecting a long climax, but I’m surprised it was THAT short. Considering how long we had been building up to that confrontation, I was definitely expecting a little more. But overall it was a cute and cozy read, and I definitely see myself picking up the other books in the series to see more of the characters and the world. Thank you so much to the author for an eArc.

Thank you to the author for my gifted copy. All opinions are my own. First off, I love books in which reading plays a key part in the story. Books were so important to the story, and I enjoyed that aspect so much.  Second, the story was beautifully written. Beatrice and Alexander's characters were well developed. Beatrice is so witty and knowledgeable, but deeply loyal. One of the main tropes in this book is marriage of convenience and Gabrielle Landi did a fantastic job writing that trope. The side characters add so much to the plot and one of my favorite parts of books in a series is when you get to revisit old characters. The ending was perfect and so sweet. I highly recommend reading this book (and the series).

I had the privilege to receive an ARC of this book. To my pleasant surprise, I loved it. It was not only a cute romcom, but fast-paced as well. You got an insight into the characters and their values. There were a few points that felt a little cringy, but nothing that ruined the experience. Cannot wait to read the first book in the series as well as the one coming out later this year!

(Thank you Gabrielle Landi for the audiobook arc copy. The review is my honest opinion of the book)
🌹🌹🌹🌹 A solid four star (rose) story!
Thoughts:
The cover!! It’s so cute, and amazing!
I really liked this story, it was sweet, awesome, clean, and really just so good! I liked how it was a calm read, one that you could put down without wondering thw whole time you are away what will happen next, yet still the kind of book that kept my interest and made me want to keep listening.
The narrator did a amazing job reading it, which definitely upped the enjoyment factor.
I will admit that I skipped a few minutes when the sorcerer pulled out his wand as I didn’t want to listen to anything that might be uncomfortable. But even with that it was a really good read.
I seem to be in the habit of reading later books in a series before the earlier books, which happened with the next book and this book as well, but I also enjoyed getting to see the characters from those books in the earlier books.

Favorite character, part, quote.
I have to say that i do like Dietrich. He’s just so awkward, well meaning, and kind of snarky.
I liked the epolouge as it just showed how everything came together.
I don’t remember the exact quote but I like where it said that you have to chose to love, and that it is work.

Bible Verse
John 15:5 KJV[5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Once Upon a Rose is one of the sweetest Beauty and the Beast retellings I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Beatrice is the town librarian, employed by the cold and aloof Lord, Alexander Dunham. Beatrice is happy surrounded by the books and helping patrons find the stories that are right for them. All of that changes when she’s summoned to Lord Dunham’s estate during a snowstorm. Alexander watched his parents die at the hand of a sorcerer and was subsequently cursed. On his 30th birthday his parents’ murder will return with his daughter and expects Alexander to marry her. Alexander has other plans though. Will Alexander and Beatrice’s marriage continue to be a marriage of convenience or will it be a love match after all?

I loved everything about this story! It was short and sweet. I appreciated that though there was a curse and uncertainties the stress was minimal and things were fairly low stakes.

I’m really looking forward to reading more of Landi’s work and am excited for the next book in the series!

Thank you Gabrielle Landi for the opportunity to read and review this book!

This is my first time reading a book by Gabrielle Landi and I'm happy to say that I had an amazing time reading Once Upon a Rose!

Beatrice was a great FL. Her character was very understanding, smart, and level-headed. She didn't jump to conclusions and heard Alexander out on the marriage proposal he blurted out, and she's quick to pick up on things but won't pry for information. She's also the funny person of the two because she's throwing in a joke as much as she can to lighten up the mood between them.

Alexander is also a very hard worker to fulfil his role as husband and lord. I wouldn't say he's a grumpy person, but he is definitely reserved. He does make sure that Beatrice feels comfortable in her new home and also makes time to spend with her.

The book is pretty fast-paced and I appreciate that we didn't have to wait long for things to start happening. I've had my fair share of cosy books, and it's always a hit or miss for me, so I'm glad this worked out.

I did catch Once Upon an Apple and Once Upon a Pumpkin cameos in here. I'm assuming each standalone connects with each other, and you'll get some sort of timeline, and the world expands with each instalment, which is very neat. This is a sign for me to start reading Once Upon an Apple and start a mental countdown till the day Once Upon a Pumpkin releases ৻( •̀ ᗜ •́ ৻)

Ultimately, Once Upon a Rose is romance-focused and very light-hearted. It's the book to pick up for a quick read and relax. In my opinion, since it isn't plot heavy, readers can fully appreciate the engaging banter and endearing relationship between the two leads. We can also agree that we need a Rose in our life ദ്ദി ꒦ິ꒳꒦ິ )✧

many thanks to Gabrielle Landi for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are entirely my own and may differ from others

This was such a cute book! I loved how Beatrice and Alexander stuck by each other and faced their challenges together, whether it was an uncaring parent or a cruel magician. My favorite part was definitely Rose, the baby dragon, and all the cozy reading snuggles the family had together! This story was so charming I wished there were more details about the town, lifestyle, and what all the characters looked like. I'm excited to read Dietrich's story next, and I hope there's a book coming about Guinevere, too!

If you know me you know I love Beauty and the Beast, so I may be a little biased but I loved this little story.
While Once Upon a Rose is more lightly based on the fairytale it is done in an utterly delightful cozy way. I thought the marriage of convenience was a clever fun twist, especially the way it played out between this caring cursed lord, and kindhearted feisty librarian. In case you can’t tell I loved the characters Alexander and Beatrice. Alexander was a green flag by all book girl logic. Beatrice—oh Beatrice we would be great friends. Through the fun banter and slight twists the romance is developed very sweetly with some swoon worthy lines. And I must say that although I am no extreme cat lover this particular animal sidekick was a special dear.
If you are looking for a fun, cozy, clean, fairytale this is a book I would recommend.

A very cute read.

I really wouldn't call this a beauty and the beast retelling because 1) There's no actual beast elements in either appearance or attitude and 2) any magic was very restricted as noted in the story that magic was banished.

If I remove it from any "BatB retelling" then the cute romance in this was very instant for both MCs which I found interesting because there's not much to go on, so maybe they knew each other in book 1, but the marriage of convenience trope is a fave of mine.

That being said the wizard and all the talk about him was anticlimactic. There was a lot of mystic and power described to him, just to show up at the end and then poof he was handled within seconds and everyone else moved on. 😂

All in all a cute quick read just not much of a BatB retelling. A cute and clean romance.

My review of book 1

Genre: Cozy fantasy, (very loose) fairy tale retelling [of Beauty and the Beast]
Tropes: Marriage of convenience, silencing curse, found family, cinnamon roll hero, forced proximity, cute animal companions
Setting: Historical with a modern feel
Writing style: Dual POV (alternating chapters) plus a 3rd in epilogue, 3rd person, past tense
Tone: Even
Character- or plot-driven: Plot-driven

Romance: Yes
Clean level:
• 1 mouth kiss including him cupping and stroking her cheek and brushing hair from her face, her tugging him close by the shirt, him tangling his hands in her hair and followed by her resting her head on his shoulder and pressing into him; a few paragraph’s worth but pretty lightly described
• 1 mouth kiss including him cupping her cheeks, her wrapping her arms around his neck and pressing into him, and him with one hand in her hair; pulling back for air; she understands why people enjoy kissing; “No wonder people enjoyed it so much”
• 1 instance of anticipating a kiss, 5 short sentences; followed a few paragraphs later by “she had a husband to kiss”
• 1 full scene of man teaching his wife to dance that includes mild romantic tension on his side and a near-kiss
• 1 comforting cheek kiss with minimal description, including touching foreheads
• 1 instance of man looking at wife’s lips when she moistens them after he tucks her in
• 1 hug including breathing in the smell of her hair and never wanting to let go, 3 sentences
• 1 instance of a man realizing he wants to kiss his wife and reflecting briefly on his feelings, about a paragraph
• 1-sentence instance of thinking husband is taking her out to kiss her without interruption
• 1 forehead kiss, breathing in scent
• 1 hand kiss, zero description
• Man carries his wife and thinks how fun it is and how he should do it more, 3 sentences
• 1 instance of man briefly wondering what it would feel like to run his fingers through woman’s hair, another briefly wanting to feel her hair
• Man mentally notes in passing how wonderful his wife smells
*See caveats below

Sensitive aspects:
• 1 sentence of noticing man isn’t wearing a shirt
• 1 brief mention of woman looking away from husband’s bare chest
• 1 brief instance of man avoiding seeing up wife’s skirt

Favorite aspect of the book: When Guinevere gives Alexander potions to try to loosen the silencing curse and the first takes his voice away and the second makes him talk non-stop

Thoughts on main characters: Beatrice is dedicated to expanding access to education through the library she founded herself, with Alexander’s patronage, and she uses surplus funds he provides to purchase textbooks for the school. Her joy comes from strengthening the people around her. Alexander shares a similar commitment, continuing his mother’s efforts to put books into the hands of his tenants. Despite their unconventional beginning, they both uphold the responsibilities of marriage and show appropriate concern and loyalty from the outset.

I enjoyed this one a lot more than the last. The writing felt a little less simplistic and it held my attention. Part of that might be because it contains one of my favorite tropes. This is one marriage of convenience where they already knew each other, albeit in a professional capacity, before.

Alexander’s self-assertion that he “shouldn’t” be in love with Beatrice felt like a ridiculous plot point and wasn’t even well executed. I might not have had as much of an issue if this attitude had been introduced from the beginning. When it first came up, and he thought of her as “dangerous” and that he should “keep his distance,” it seemed like a complete 180 in attitude. I’m assuming this is because of losing his parents so young and wanting to avoid that heartache, but again, the execution felt like shoehorning. It’s also overkill how constantly we are told that he’s “falling in love with her” and what a disaster that would be. To top it all off, Alexander makes progress toward actually wanting a real relationship with Beatrice, only to abruptly revert to “can’t get too close; I just want a neutral marriage.”

The “beast” aspect of Alexander’s character feels half-heartedly incorporated. We are told that others view him as callous and arrogant, and that some even label him a beast, but the retelling doesn’t show behavior that would explain this reputation in the way a stronger adaptation would. His isolation from the village is effectively retained, though not from all society, since he visits his tenants. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate that he is kind and considerate toward Beatrice from the very beginning of their acquaintance. It’s just that, if people go so far as to label him a beast of all things, there should be something.

Most importantly, the driving force of the whole story — the sorcerer’s attempt to force Alexander to marry his daughter — is resolved just like that. His defeat is so abrupt that Alexander himself notes how anticlimactic the whole thing is. I understand this is supposed to be cozy but that doesn’t mean there can’t at least be a little more of a battle scene. The incorporation of conflict in book 1 proves that.

____________________________________

Jenkins hadn’t been there when Alexander’s father had told him, his voice cracking, that the sorcerer had forcibly bound him to a betrothal agreement before disappearing in the flash of fire and smoke that set their rose garden ablaze and mortally wounded his parents. He hadn’t been there to overhear that Alexander and his parents were cursed to silence about the whole matter.
I’m confused, because I thought the fire killed them. Did they die later of their wounds?

But still, the fact that someone had figured out that he was cursed and so quickly narrowed it down to the day of reckoning was shocking.

Guinevere already did.

“He can talk about it in his sleep? That means the curse probably had something to do with not telling anyone else and isn’t specifically about stopping the words[.]”

Well, yes. The point is that no one else can know. Although I guess it usually doesn’t make an exception like this.

He held out an arm to steady her, just in case she fell. For some reason, she was prone to falling around him.”

She only fell once!

Even if the sorcerer never came back, he didn’t want to fall for his wife. He didn’t want a love match, or a woman who would die for him, as he would die for her.

So, thinking back on this, I do get the dying for someone part, since the sorcerer killed his parents for something concerning Alexander. But this whole thing seems like such a strange attitude to have regardless. He also asked her specifically because he was already attracted to her in some way, so it’s wishy-washy.

And maybe, just maybe, the feelings he had for his wife were turning into love. And that was more than he had ever dared to hope for.

We keep being told he doesn’t want to be in love with her! See, wishy-washy.

I know that I went about this all wrong, and I should have told you from the beginning what was happening. I wish that I could have[.]

This is contradictory. The only questionable choice was marrying her while believing that involving her might put her in danger. If he could have told her anything, he would have.

*There’s a bonus epilogue that’s kind of sweet.
Clean level:
• He pulls her down to lie on top of him on the ground
• “Too busy kissing my wife”
• Mouth kiss with zero description

Favorite Quotations:
• Beatrice's eyes widened yet again. If this house and these people didn't stop surprising her, she might permanently appear to be an owl.
• At the mention of his name, Beatrice’s stomach was suddenly full of butterflies, or perhaps a more violent winged animal—crows, maybe.
• “Is that a problem?” Had Beatrice had an understanding with this man and neglected to tell him? Dietrich shook his head. “Not a problem, as long as she’s happy and you don’t hurt her,” he said. “I suggest we find her because if we don’t, I might have to kill you.”
• It shouldn’t make his heart stop beating to think about the fact that hers might have already stopped.
• Her father had been the person who was forced to have her, but Alexander was the man who had chosen to keep her.
• “Is it supposed to feel like I’m boiling a pot of water in my stomach?”
• “I trust you had a good day,” he asked, “aside from the part where you tried to poison me?” Beatrice giggled. “We weren’t trying to poison you,” she said. “I’m sorry that Guinevere is new at the illegal magic she practiced to try to break your curse, but really, she did the best she could.” “I should be grateful that her best didn’t actually poison or maim me, I suppose,” Alexander said sarcastically. Beatrice nodded in approval. “Exactly. It could have been so much worse.” She chuckled at the look Alexander sent her way. “It’s true,” she protested. “You could have died.” “Don’t remind me,” he said. “I’m never going to listen to you again.”
• Details were coming together overnight, and she was making this the wedding of Beatrice’s dreams. Now, none of Beatrice’s dreams had included a sorcerer trying to marry her husband off to someone else, but that was a small detail. If she overlooked that, everything was practically perfect.
• “And even [once you’re] in love, it doesn’t stay those happy butterflies forever. Love is work, dearie, and for those who are willing to put in the work, it is rewarding and wonderful.”

First, I would like to point out I got an eArc for this book, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

As a child, I always enjoyed fairytales and grew up watching and reading them. So, when I saw the opportunity to sign up for this arc, I took it. And I am not disappointed at all!

I adore Beatrice and Alexander, especially Little Rose (an adorable and moody dragon) i also adore Dietrich and Guinevere and the concept of found family in this book.

It was an adorable cozy read with enough fluff! I loved the potion scene and couldn't but laugh a lot! These had quite a few tropes I enjoyed

Marriage of convenience
Librarian x cursed lord
Found family

The book is written cozily and you will enjoy this book if you love Instalove there are a few things I wish the author would have worked on

That being said its still a pretty fun read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cant wait for the next book!

Incredibly anticlimactic.. the way it ends is just so disappointing. There’s a build up to a meeting with a certain someone and it’s over in a blink! And then happily ever after, of course..

I love Beauty and the Beast retellings but this one was not at all beastly enough.. the only thing I did enjoy was reading about her book passion, borderline addiction. I could kind of associate with that bit. The “marry a handsome rich af lord you’ve met a few times” bit was not really up to my standards or my tastes.

But at least this one was more fantastical because there was a hint of magic involved, unlike on the first book of the series, so I guess it’s okay to label it cozy fantasy in that regard, but I can’t say there was anything particularly cozy in this book.. maybe aside from the library but that wasn’t given enough attention to count, really. Sure there wasn’t violence and sure the characters sound incredibly naive, but something was missing.

Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairytale, and I think that is because I relate to the character of Belle in more ways than other princesses... I mean she is a reader, need I say less?

I had the privilege of ARC reading this book for Gabrielle, and I loved it! It was well written, magical, super sweet, and gave all the cozy vibes that I was expecting!

Beatrice and Alexander were adorable, and their story was so cute. I honestly did not want to put this book down, so when it came time to go to work, where I wouldn't be able to read more of it, I was sad.

It was not a super long book, which I found so refreshing and made it even more enjoyable. If you have not picked this up yet, I highly encourage you to.

It was well worth the read!

This was such a sweet and cozy Beauty and the Beast retelling. It was an enjoyable quick read. The characters are sweet and endearing. They make it easy to cheer them on. If you’ve read any of the previous books, a few of the characters are already endeared to us with several new faces to get to know. And Rose? Who doesn’t love a cute little dragon?! Where can I get one?

I do wish there as a bit more explanation about the “curse” both as to what it did and what led to the wizard cursing him. Maybe more details will come in another book? Overall, the plot was fairly quick paced with a touch of mystery and magic to keep you reading. It is full of cozy vibes and a sweet HEA.

A good read for any age.

Read if you enjoy:

I received an ARC of Once Upon a Rose, and while the story has a cozy charm, there were just too many issues that made it fall flat for me. I really wanted to give it at least 3 stars, but honestly, finishing it felt more like a chore than an enjoyable read. So, I have to be honest: it’s a 2-star rating from me.

First, I noticed quite a few typos, including inverted quotation marks, which broke the flow and pulled me out of the story.

Beatrice's cheerful personality is definitely sweet, but the constant use of words like "grin" and "smile" started feeling repetitive and, honestly, a bit awkward. It would really help if there was more variety in how her expressions are described.

The romance felt underwhelming and unearned. There’s hardly any character development or meaningful struggles the couple goes through together, which made their connection feel shallow. Even the climax, which should have been the emotional high point of the story, ended up being rushed and wrapped up in just a few sentences. It left me feeling disappointed and unsatisfied.

On top of that, Lord Duham’s lack of physical description really stood out to me: there’s no mention of his hair color, eye color, skin tone, or any other defining traits. Maybe I missed it, but I usually look for some kind of visual cue to help ground my imagination in the story, and I felt like this book didn’t give me much to work with.

Also, his reputation as an antisocial figure in town isn’t really explored, which takes away from the impact of his eventual smile or "change of attitude." It should’ve been a big moment, especially since this is supposed to be a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Honestly, I’m missing the "beast" part of the equation here.

Beatrice’s surprise at being appreciated by the estate staff doesn’t feel realistic, especially since she’s constantly surrounded by loving friends like Thea, her "brother," and Eugenia. Her loneliness just doesn’t come across as believable.

Overall, the premise has potential, and I’m usually a big fan of clean, cute fairy tale-inspired romances. But in this case, the lack of immersion, meaningful character depth, and a well-developed romance left me feeling pretty underwhelmed.

A cozy read—very fitting with the snow we’ve had recently—pairs perfectly with a cozy armchair, fire, and a lovely cup of tea. 🥰

Thank you for the ARC Gabrielle Landi.

No Spice 💕

Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite Disney romances so I had to read this!

I loved the majority of this book, it was very cozy and sweet. Beatrice is definitely Belle, the kinder librarian who would fight and defend those she loves. Rose and her chirps were the cutest! A little moody dragon adds to the coziness.

I disliked Alexander’s explanation of why he was the Beast. It didn’t fit at all. The curses build up fell flat and was extremely underwhelming. Even though this story is a romance why focus the entire story around all for it to lead to an anticlimactic scene.

Beatrice and Alexander’s romance also felt anticlimactic, they are grown adults who barely spend time together but somehow fall in love. (The constant reminder of their marriage of convenience threw me off.) It could’ve still been a clean romance with more sweet and adorable moments.

Other things that took me out of the story were Beatrice’s dad and the mention of a Bible. In a fantasy world with magic, a curse, and a baby dragon it felt completely random.
