Remnants of the Earth Kingdom army try to regain control of the country as Kuvira tries to make amends. This was written by one of the creators of the cartoon. The art looks exactly like the show. I'm sure any fan of the show will enjoy this.
Received a review copy from Dark Horse and Edelweiss. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.
I'm here for gay shit, Kuvira being hot, and Beifong ladies kicking ass. Also, I liked the art in this series more than the first one. I read all three in one shot so even though I own three different books I'm doing the review on this one so it counts as one! And now I kinda want the hardcover! Dammit!!!!!!!
Honestly this is so much better than the previous volume. I loved seeing the *consequences* of the series, the storylines, plot, character arc. All of it.
And Toph is, and always will be a favourite character to return to :)
Usual disclaimer applies: I'm the weirdo who prefers LoK to TLA.
So this graphic novel poses a question: would it be easier for Hitler to earn redemption if he were a hot ballerina?
(And the answer is: yes, as long as he had a sad backstory)
(And yes, I'm aware that Sozin/Azulon/Ozai are more of a Hitler analogue but Kuvira is a close second - well, fourth).
It isn't a bad story, by all means. We get more of prince Wu, we get Toph Beifong running for office AND kicking ass. We get awesome president Zhu Li. We continue the theme of LoK that there are some enemies that you can't fight only with mindless violence (though in the end you have to still duel them). Still the setup of Guan trying to take power in a legitimate (or so people think) way is kinda wasted. Also Guan shares the problems with the Big Bad for Turf Wars as he's not that great villain.
So now to the main thing.
This comic is about Kuvira.
The rest of the characters, including, you know, *Korra* are mainly the supporting cast. We do get a glimpse into (suitably sad) Kuvira's backstory. Right away I have an issue - am I really to believe that OPAL of all people called Kuvira "A stray dog that no one could love?". I know she was like six back then but it is very much out-of-character for her. We do have Kuvira getting basically a slap on the wrist for, well, for being basically ballerina-Hitler. We get the whole Beifong clan (with one exception) forgiving her everything she did. And even Asami *almost* forgives her.
On the other hand she does sincerely try to redeem herself, risks not only her life but - what for a person like her is a bigger sacrifice - her sanity and mental capacity and accepts responsibility for what she had done. What is more, the one person she hurt the most - Baatar Jr, whom I dislike intensely but has a definite point here - does not accept her apology and does not forgive her. And while she gets a slap on the wrist for her crime, she doesn't get exactly away scot-free. If we were to be splitting hairs, Iroh before his son's death was also a conqueror and (if it wasn't a kid show) Zuko would have probably been guilty of a war crime or two.
The best thing I like about it, though, is a meta-thing - the comic averts the trope of Redemption Equals Death. It's easy to get a character redeem himself and then conveniently die. But what if that character lives? Some people are more likely to forgive them (and tbh it's not a big surprise that a mother-figure is the most forgiving one) some are less.
By the way, pity this comics had so little Korrasami moments, even though the setup was PERFECT for it. Oh well.
I really hope the Korra storyline will continue as I'm too invested in these characters to stop (at least there is fanfiction...).
King Wu has decided to abdicate to make way for democracy in the Earth Kingdom, and the preparations are running when they realise that not the whole Earth Kingdom army has stepped down yet.
Not gonna lie, it's been a while since I watched Legend of Korra, so I wasn't very sure about the side characters but the most important things came back to me. This comic can be read as a standalone, I guess, once you realise that it has a magic system based on the four element theory.
For the tags, I am not sure how to classify the romance between Asami and Korra. I've had discussions in the past with people saying Korra is bisexual, but I view her more as a pansexual person. I went with lesbian because for the purpose of this story, in this graphic novel, we have two women being in a relationship and no label is used.
Apart from all that, I am again struck by how these comics feel necessary. Same as with the Search for the Aang stories, which I've read a few days back: The story makes sense. This is not a sequel to make more money out of the franchise, it is a sensible addition that takes the plot where it stopped and tells how it goes on, solves conflicts that were there instead of shoehorning some slice of life stuff in. I stopped consuming multiple series because of the opposite happening, because we're nearing the 100 issues mark and the plot is still not over because most of it is filler material. I guess it takes guts from the creators to make sure everything that is added is of value, and I take my metaphorical hat of for you.
In general, the tone is more serious as it was for Aang's stories, but still apropiate for younger readers. If you've liked the Legend of Korra series, you'll like this.
I recieved a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
A really good story but I’m still low key team f*ck Kuvira. I didn’t fully believe the total 180 flip that she did in her redemption arc. It felt very sudden and forced. Like why is she suddenly seeing the light? I Feel like this series needed to be flushed out more to understand why the hill she chose to die on suddenly didn’t seem like the right one anymore.
Well, that was dissapointing. I give it 2.5 stars, because it has such potential but the ending went completely downhill.
This review will be split into three parts.
Part One: The election I really really like the first issue. I would give it a 4 stars and I was hoping the rest would be as good. The characters' face were pretty good (which was a complaint I had with Turf War where the faces were drawn odd). Visually good, the main characters are pretty consistant with their appearance/personnality in the tv show, Korra+Asami are a great couple and it's nice that the comics expend on that. However there are also a fair share of questionable stuff.
Then we see Kuvira. First, why she in a cave? The bad lotus people were all kept in prisons that were designed for them, to prevent them from using their bending. Zaheer was in an underground rock cave because he's an AIRBENDER. Kuvira is a powerful, dangerous individual and she is chained alone in a private cell, so it makes sense that they would design a cell specifically for her. But she's a freaking EARTHBENDER!?!?! And a metal bender! Why chain her with metal on a metal disc in a cave made of rocks???? Also the "we gotta bring mean lady with us on a quest because only she can help us" has already been used in The Search and it didn't end well. And then Korra's like "hey guys can I bring Kuvira?" Asami: "She killed my father." Korra: "Please." Asami: "You son of a bitch, I'm in."
Ok but then they get to the election and Guan shows up with big army, Kuvira tries to 1v1 him but he's smart and then PLOT TWIST he wants to put his name up as a candidate in the election!?!? Really? And he says he wants to appoint Earth Empire candidate in all the other provinces and recreate the Earth Empire diplomatically!? I gotta say, I was not expecting that (even if in hindsight it's a logical plot direction) and I was pleasantly suprised!!
Oh boy I can't wait to see what direction this story is going to take!
Part 2: ...there's always a but...
Guan wants to join the election as a candidate? This is a very interesting turn of event and I can't wait to read the rest! The readers knows all about the bad things that were done by the Earth Empire, yet it could be possible to construct a story whereas the Earth Empire could have legitimate arguments in favor of their election, even today there are fringe authocratic parties that can manage to get seats in democratic elections around the world using populist rhetoric that can appeal to some people. The mongols under Genghis Khan were a ruthless empire that massacred neighbouring countries by the million, but inside their territory there was so much peace and prosperity that it was said that a lonesome girl could walk from one end of the Empire to the other (if you know how immense the mongol empire was, you'll know that is one long-ass walk) without being attacked by bandit because the country was that secure. The nazi party gained power in Germany democraticly (at first) by appealing to a people that was still suffering from the backlash of the first world war and going through a tough financial depression. What makes this storyline so interesting is that we know that in real life, authocratic government can be (and have been) elected through democratic process. Reeling from the assassinations, wars and destruction that happened not long ago, the Earth Kingdom was still not back on its feet and the Earth Empire could have argued that a strong firm hand was better to bring peace and prosperity in the Kingdom, and it would be scary to see Korra trying to argue with a wannabe dictator that her way is better, that compassion and freedom is more important than stability and prosperity, or maybe Team Avatar and co. could argue that the Earth Empire wouldn't actually bring prosperity for, reasons, I don't know, maybe the writers have smart political commentary to dole out and-
Oh it's mind control. That's it. The Earth Empire's plan is just: brainwash everyone.
You know, when Legend of Korra came out, the cast of characters were all olders than the Gaang and some people thought that this would signify that the story would be more adult. Don't get me wrong, I love the last airbender, it's one of my favorite show ever, but one thing I liked about Korra was that it allowed itself to visit more mature themes. So when a fringe authocratic political party forms in an unstable region, pardon me for expecting something smarter than "and then they brainwashed everyone with magnets."
I love Toph, but the political debate between "this character is a character you love and cherish from the first series, while this character only gets votes because he brainwashes people!" is weak and lame.
You could have USED Toph's candidature in the arguments of Guan, like "hey look the Avatar, the most powerful person in the world (and actually a citizen of the water tribes, not the earth kingdom!) is trying to appoint her friend as politician, how come we're the one being called power-hungry?" And that brings up interesting questions. Is the Avatar's nepotism more justified than the EE's democratic candidature? Jeez this storyline makes me so angry about all the wasted potential I'm seething.
Part 3: You get a redemption arc! And you get a redemption arc! And also you get a redemption arc! Everybody's got a redemption arc!
Zuko's redemption arc is one of the best in storytelling history and I think the Avatar creative team knows that because they've been trying to recreate it like 15 times in Korra. Tarrlok eliminates the antagonists of s1, Varrick becomes a good guy (sorta), Asami's dad becomes a good guy and a martyr, Bataar Jr switches back to the good side, and now Kuvira is now this tragic figure that is not so bad after all! I wonder if the next comic they make will be about Commander Guan's redemption arc.
Kuvira was a bad person. She killed Asami's father and tried to murder her own husband, after subjugating almost a whole continent, I have no doubt that the Earth Empire left a trail of nameless deaths in its conquest of the Kingdom. I really don't buy her quick turn to the light side and the subsequent love she received from everyone else at the end. There's specifically a flashback that shows Opal calling her a stray dog to show that she had a difficult childhood?? What? Opal's not a huge asshole? Why you gotta bring her down to prop up Kuvira?
Overall, a dissapointment because it could have been so much deeper and smarter but it resorted to cheap tricks and rehashed ideas.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I remember when this first came out and I was SO happy because I was getting a Kuvira redemption bc she is my girl. Now that I've re-watched the show (...again) and have come back to this run, I have some different opinions. I still really liked this just because Kuvira is my fave but I have a few issues with how Kuvira is handled in general. First of all, she DEFINITELY knew there was brainwashing going on in this camps like in the show she straight up said so I feel like this is revisionist history that she's like OH I had NO idea... sure Jan. I think part of the problem of this run stems from the problem of the show being too rushed. I liked seeing parts of her childhood in the comic but it wasn't enough and it's kind of a "too late" situation because they never showed that stuff in the show and her actions in the show were SO extreme that I feel like this redemption was 1) undeserved and 2) unnecessary.
Also the fact that they STILL don't know what to do with Bolin so they made him Zhu Li's assistant like LOL.
This is so GOOD!! I really LOVE I getting to see Korra and everyone again, and it was interesting to see where they are now and it was a really GOOD exploration of Kuvira and her growth, and that people can take action to do better - it doesn't fix the past but works towards the future!!! I just honestly LOVE Kuvira in this so much!!! A great comic for any fans of the show!!!
Once again, LoK gives a unique spin to its already diverse villains. While I wished Mako had more screen time, the moments he and Bolin had were great; I highly look forward to Penquan Island! Story did feel a bit shortcutted in places, but I don’t mind. Gorgeous art style and coloring.
I liked this one! Kuvira’s arc was compelling and satisfying, 3 generations of Beifongs made me happy, Zhu Li was a competent leader. I already want more about Su and Kuvira, but this comic served as a great redemption arc for now. This is LOK at its best — navigating moral ambiguity with these familiar characters.
Still, repetition of crazy technology — only so far that can interest me when the primary draw of ATLA was the lore.
I like the art from Ruins of the Empire better than Turf War it is the closet style to the original. And I enjoy Kuriva's redemption arc. We all know she is a person with good intention. But had a problematic method to solve problems. So her redemption arc was understandable.
Oh, I really liked this one! The story progression and focus on a preexisting villain definitely made this way more interesting than the 1st Korra comic. Letting Kuvira be the focus was an interesting choice, and I'm glad we get to spend more time with her and see how her feelings have developed since the end of the show. Korra and Asami are such a great couple, and their connection was well developed, too. Mako and Bolin were fun supporting characters, but I wish they had been more important to the overall story. The only major problems I have with this story are Kuvira's development which felt a little too fast, and some of the story beats felt a bit slow. Still a fun read and I definitely recommend it to all Avatar fans!
I love everything Avatar-related, especially going deep with these characters and how Korra is growing to be her own version of the Avatar. That said, I think that while wanting these stories to be "closed chapters" So the next one can tackle whatever conflict they want I would have liked to give Kuvira some redemption while giving the opportunity to keep proving herself, her backstory was very interesting and I like that they're giving us more from the secondary characters but she has so much potential still that I would love a come back.
I was really hoping they went down the storyline of Kuvira. She is a bad a** and I knew she needed redemption herself.
I would love to know more about her childhood as they only glimpse it in pieces but not the entire story.
Also, I love seeing old team avatar back into the storylines. It’s just great seeing old characters from ATLA, and toph character always brings so much into the story.
As always I love the avatar the last airbender and the legend of korra comics. They show parts of the world and story that we did not see or touch in the shows.
This one showed what happened to Kuvira after the show.
The only thing i did not like was some of Kuvira back story as a child, I just found it un realistic or just hard to show in a few panels of a comic. But that was very minor overall really enjoyed this edition to the avatar universe.
Tipo, i get it que ela cometeu war crimes mas tipo, i could fix her. Ela pode ter sido ditadora, mas deixou-me a ditadura. Amo-te Kuvira, nunca mudes.
First off 🗣Kuvira redemption arc ❤️ plus my boy Wu getting adventure time with team avatar is always a plus. But the best thing was the artist who illustrated korra made her actually look like korra from the series!
