The Librarian's Gargoyle

Rate this book
Magic is real, and Viola is going to prove it!

Viola is a Parisian librarian by day and parkourist by night. The last thing she wants is an arranged marriage (ick) with a man (double ick.) If Viola can fund the library and keep it open, she might keep her job and freedom, might being the key word. To make matters worse, strange magical shades keep attacking her, threatening her physical safety. Viola knows magic is real and wants to be part of that world, but she can’t find a way out of her mundane life. She can only vent her troubles to her confidant, a lady gargoyle… though the statue has never spoken back.

Boudicca is a creature without a soul—a fact as steady as the stone she’s made of. Yet when the mage who created Boudicca gives her a task that requires her to appear human, she’s feeling new, soft things for the librarian who likes to climb Paris in her slippers. Viola could never love Boudicca in her true form, but the gargoyle finds herself putting her heart on the line to help keep the library open… and help Viola discover the magic that will pull her into a new world of freedom.

The Librarian’s Gargoyle is a cozy sapphic monster romantasy set in turn-of-the-century Paris.

Sapphic Monster Romance

🗿 Bookish Thoughts
Absolutely loved this sapphic monster romance! I wish there were more sapphic books in this genre. Viola and Boudicca together were everything 🥰

I wasn’t fond of Viola’s family. I know her
Father came around at the end and that
it was usual behavior for this time period but 😒😒

I highly recommend listening to the audiobook because it was incredible. Abby Craden is truly the queen of narration!

I liked this book. It was original and creative; that is the main takeaway from my reading experience. The worldbuilding and magic, characters and creatures, were all original enough to be intriguing while also familiar enough that the novel was easy to follow. The audiobook narrator did a great job as well, and it was a delightful listening experience.

There are a few nitpicks that I have, particularly at the end of this novel. For the most part they all can be summarized by saying that there were many elements in this novel that felt unfinished or unresolved and unsatisfactory. This reads like the first novel in a series, where there was a resolution to the main story but the door is open to a larger story to come. There were many characters who had hints to there being more to them than we saw in this novel. If this is a standalone then this is a big disappointment, but if this turns out to be a series (not that I heard of or can see) then this fits and makes sense. I took off a lot of “points” for these elements, but the originality and creativity of the story still kept it at 5 stars.

The romance was nice. I felt like I didn’t entirely connect with it as I expected but that may have been because of the choppy nature of how I listen to audiobooks. Their story is a delightful one and I enjoyed it all the same.

The Librarian's Gargoyle by Evelyn Shine was several firsts for me and quite enjoyable. Set in Paris, France, in the early 1900s, Shine details a lovely gothic setting with a barely hidden magical world simmering under the surface. Mages, a library with secret rooms and portals to alternate dimensions, a cloaked tower, and its fascinating gargoyle guardians were just some of the fantastical things in this story of how the power of love can change one at their very core.
Viola was a knowledgeable, inquisitive, librarian despite the roles of women at the time and despite her wealthy family's protests and an arranged marriage. She spends all of her time secretly researching to prove the existence of magic. Boudicca was a gargoyle charged with protecting the tower. They are inescapably drawn together, and this is their love story.
This was my first monster romantasy, my first book set in turn-of-the-century Paris, and my first time reading a midair coitus scene. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that last one.
This story was sweet, romantic, spicy, magical, empowering, and hopeful. It was well-written and lovely, and the cover is beautiful. I found only minor issues, such as a term or two that seemed out of place for the times but easy to overlook amid the captivating tale.
I am giving it 4.5 stars and I will absolutely be recommending this book. I am looking forward to reading more by Evelyn Shine.

Did I ever enjoy it?! What a question! Of course I did!!! It’s so light and fun and cute and sweet and has that feel of monsters-in-love-with-humans-but-they-don’t-feel-worthy sort of vibe like The Hunchback of Notre Dame or Cyrano de Bergerac. This “unrequited” love but lighter and also not a tragedy!

I loved reading this story because it’s different from the usual monster books I usually read. As mentioned more than once above, I like the lightness of the story, the character’s sarcasm and sharp tongue towards people who try and stifle her freedom.

PS What is with horned creatures and their partners ending up riding their faces while holding on to their horns? This is not the first story I’ve encountered with such visual. I’m not complaining. Just wondering.

An okay read overall! The book had its strengths, but also a few notable flaws.

The setting—1912 Paris—was rich with potential, but the use of very modern language and practices pulled me out of the historical atmosphere. It didn’t quite grip me as much as I’d hoped, though I give it credit for its creative and refreshingly unique plot. The main characters were sweet and likable, albeit somewhat one-dimensional.

A decent story with charm, but not one that fully delivered on its promise.

Cozy and sweet indeed. It was the perfect comfort and slowing down that I needed.
The last part could have a little more punch, but it was closed neatly.

An entertaining Sapphic love story that takes place among the old buildings in Paris. Viola works at the library and owns a pair of magical slippers gifted to her by her grandmother. These slippers enable Viola to safely navigate the rooftops of Paris where she often rests in the lap of an imposing stone gargoyle. When the library is threatened, and Viola’s parents decide to arrange a marriage for her to a man, Viola must take matters into to her own hands to secure the future she wants for herself.
The audiobook is well narrated and the changing viewpoints were easy to follow.
My thanks to the author, publisher, @TantorAudio, and #NetGalley for access to the audiobook of #TheLibrariansGargoyle for review purposes. The book is now available.

I was so taken with this story, I had to consciously stop myself from skipping to the final chapters to see how it would end. I never did and found the reading journey was worth it. The author builds a world of unseen magic that includes a Parisian library with secret rooms, hidden towers, and protective cloaking spells. Viola is a brilliant librarian seeking proof magic exists. The gargoyle Boudicca, who she shares her troubles with, protects her without revealing her true self while struggling with her identity. As their relationship grows, they each grow as individuals. This book has humor, adventure, romance, and well developed diverse characters I'd like to see more of. It's a wonderful sapphic debut work and I plan to read more by this author in the future. I highly recommend this.

First, let me say that the audio narration was well done. The librarian FMC was portrayed as quite whiny and young-sounding, but in all honesty, that's how she was written as well.

My first issue is actually what started off the book as well. To kick off the book, we are introduced to the characters when the librarian FMC is quite young - 10 I believe - and the gargoyle FMC is already well established as a gargoyle. I don't believe we are ever told exactly how old she is, but we are led to believe that she is quite old. My issue is that the first chapter has our librarian FMC as a child, and then we jump ahead in time to her being an adult, and the gargoyle FMC is having physical and sexual attraction to her. We don't get to see their "relationship" change through the years, so it is very jarring to jump straight from "she's a child in my arms" to "I want to touch her". I would have greatly preferred to have the adult timeline start without that physical and sexual attraction, so that we can see that grow. As it is, it feels a bit icky and that stayed with me throughout the entire book. The librarian FMC's change in feeling was logical and made complete sense. I just wish the gargoyle FMC's did as well.

The plot and setting are unique for this subgenre of monster romance - set in 1920s Paris, with the librarian FMC fighting to keep her library accessible to all levels of society and also keep her independence and not get forced into an unwanted marriage. The magic and fantasy aspects are thought out and interesting - I always love the "in plain sight" fantasy worlds. The plot is definitely what kept me listening to this book, though I did have moments when modern terminology and phrasing were used that completely pulled me out of the story. At one point, the librarian FMC says, "Would she ghost me?" and I had to hit pause for a few minutes...

Overall, I would not classify this as a cozy romance, though it certainly doesn't push into dark. I would put it somewhere in the middle. The library setting can be quite cozy at times, but overall, the high-stakes plot took more of a front seat.

Thank you to Tantor Media and NetGalley for an advanced listener copy. All opinions are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

3.5 rounded up because sapphic monster romances are still so hard to come by. It was well-written and the premise was interesting, my issues were mostly preference (for example: I have a harder time staying present in historical settings like this one, and the flowery prose intimate scenes) and not that it was a bad book. There aren’t any major flaws, it just didn’t hold my interest the way I was hoping.

I really liked Boudicca’s design though, and the way Viola wasn’t even remotely afraid or put off by her harder edges.

The narration was good too!

OK, a book about a sapphic librarian who does parkour and falls in love with a gargoyle. How could I not want to read this???

Thoughts: this was a fun but forgettable read. There is a lot of worldbuilding crammed into this story, and while I really liked that worldbuilding, it didn't leave much room for actual romance.

Speaking of, the romance could have been better. These is a lot of insta-attraction here, and Boudicca's big reveal wasn't half as shocking to Viola as it should have been. Also, the ending is a bit rushed.

That said, I did like the non-human aspect of this pairing, and it was fun to have a change of pace from werewolves and vampires. The flight scene was also fun. Sadly, it didn't quite reach the heights of say, Scatter , or Someone You Can Build a Nest In , so I am still left pining for my next 5-star read in this category.

TL;DR: this book is exactly what it says on the tin.

The Librarian's Gargoyle is a sapphic monster romantasy set in Paris during the early 1900s. Our main characters are Viola, a human librarian who knows magic is real even though she is not supposed to know about it, and Boudicca, a gargoyle who was created for the sole purpose of guarding a tower and the mage who lives in it.

I am new to the monster romantasy world so I didn't really know how I would feel about this, but I ended up loving this. It is told to be a cozy book, which it is, but it is also high stakes, with some action, some mystery and some suspense. I got really invested in the storyline and also the romance. I thought our main characters were really enjoyable and I loved reading about them. They were both so cute and wholesome but also so fierce and badass. I loved reading about their separate stories, finding out the truth about themselves and finding their place and path in the world, and about their story together, their blossoming romance that really was cuter than cute.
I liked the writing in this book and I was hooked on the story from the very beginning. This is my first time reading a book by Evelyn Shine but I will definitely be looking out for more of her books to read in the future.

Thank you RBmedia and Netgalley for the audio arc copy which i received in exchange for an honest review.

The world cozy in the title is a bit of a misnomer. There are several instances where the main characters have their lives endangered. Boudicca was sweet and protective. Viola was bookish and determined. They made a cute couple all in all.

Spice: 2/5

Triggers: violence, blood, stalking by night monsters, infidelity (not involving MCs), sexism, forced engagement, loneliness

“It’s unseemly for a lady of your standing to surround herself with books instead of suitors.”
“The last thing the poor girl needs to see is her beloved gargoyle with her tits out.”
“I’m glad we were just different enough to fit together perfectly.”

Cute & magical sapphic monster romantasy set in Paris in the early 1900s.

This book was so sweet and heartwarming. I loved the relationship development between Viola and her gargoyle. They were both interesting, strong main characters. Viola knew what she wanted and was willing to do anything to reach her goals. Boudicca, on the other hand was struggling with her identity and her feelings.

Even though the book was quite short, there was a lot happening and also a lot of character development. I would love to learn more about Xander and their past.

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Adventurous, sapphic, romantasy. This book had an amazingly dense plot for only a few hundred pages and being a standalone (although part of a series).

Viola is a fantastic main character. She’s got grit and a will to live how she wants. Boudicca is a fierce protector who struggles with her identity in a very human way. Xander is amazing and I would love to read more about them. And to find love!

Well worth a read to expand your romantasy genre from the normal plot. Thank you to the author for the great ARC!

Cute, adorable and cozy, it's a tale of finding the magic in the world, and the one that is right for you. It's a story of finding that strength, and making a place for oneself in the world. It's low angst, though not without drama - while the actions of some characters fit the time period in which it is set, it really doesn't excuse them, and that is definitely highlighted. And It's very much an enjoyable story, and it left me eager to see more of these characters and this setting in future books.

Okay this was just cute. Cozy sapphic romantasy, as advertised.

There is an abundance of patriarchal antagonism for Viola to navigate and in many ways the primary antagonist is the patriarchy itself but the cozy vibes are still a persistent theme and the slow burn relationship between Viola and Iggy was super cute.

The world building is great and the magic system is really interesting. I always found myself wanting to learn more. There’s also some really good queer rep in this. Xander’s identity isn’t specified but they use they/them pronouns and their presentation is distinctly fluid which was really cool to see.

I feel like the ending was a little bit rushed and could have benefited from another 50 pages or so to flesh out the conclusions to a few of the story arcs as a couple of them felt a little anticlimactic but the overall outcome was still enjoyable.

I read this on kindle unlimited in one day and ended up also buying it for my collection and the inevitable re-read.

I also saw there’s going to be a sequel focusing on different characters and I will read that too but honestly, I would have loved if the sequel followed Viola and Iggy again because there’s so much story potential. We only just got started with them. So pretty much my only complaint is that there isn’t more.

I received an ARC of the audiobook from the author/publisher for review purposes through NetGalley.

I didn’t go in knowing much about the author or the book and I’m actually happy about that. It allowed me to immerse myself in the story without preformed ideas. And I loved the story! For review purposes I’ll start with my impression from the audiobook.

From the first moment I started listening, I think I feel a little in love with the narrator’s voice. I’m going to have to find more books read by Abby. This is one of those audiobooks that leaves you feeling like the narrator is whispering the story just for you. The huskiness and richness of the narration may have captivated on a level that I could do nothing but love the book. There were moments when she was reading from Boudicca’s POV that I had to play again because I’m hard of hearing in certain circumstances and I couldn’t make out all the words in the deeper tone but it didn’t make me love it any less.

The pace was perfect and the change in tone for each character was easy to follow. And I don’t think I can say enough times just how much I loved her voice. All the top marks for the casting!

On to my thoughts about the story. I’m not normally a monster romance person, however, I did grow up watching Gargoyles and was intrigued when I saw this cover. It did not disappoint. The pot is fairly simple but artfully done. The historical period setting of the 1910-1920s threw me for a loop. I think you could take this same story and set it in nearly any time period and it would still work. Plus the openness and acceptance or lack of vilification of LGBTQIA+ characters is unusual for the time period was nice to see even if it might not have been accurate. But it’s a monster romance, are we expecting historical accuracy? Nope! Doesn’t mean I enjoy it any less.

The struggle Viola has with her idea of who she is and her place in the world is almost a better story that the struggle she has with the ‘villain.’ Over all I really enjoyed this book and would absolutely recommend. Especially since we need more sapphic romance stories that are outside the contemporary tropes.

This was such a cute sapphic gargoyle x human book!
This book is about Viola, who is a human librarian who has also sought out her gargoyle statue friend as emotional support as a child. One day the gargoyle comes to life as Boudicca, however Viola doesn't recognize this beautiful woman as her childhood friend gargoyle, but as a potential love interest. Unfortunately, like most women in historical settings, she is told she is to be in an arranged marriage with a prestigious man in order to produce proper heirs for her family's legacy.

I always enjoy a librarian FMC who is as passionate about books as her readers. It almost feels like breaking the character/reader wall.
As for the setting, it takes place in a historical period with hidden magic and I found it so enchanting!
I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters (can we talk about that spicy flying scene?).

The ending felt a tad rushed but overall it was a fun read and I would definitely check out more books from this author!

I remembered I had free will and didn’t need to finish this. The world building was bonkers. What do you mean it’s the early 1900’s and our FMC is talking like a millennial. It made me feel like I was reading a Katee Robert book without the fun smut.

Don't we love it when society tries to pigeonhole us into something we're not? Ew. Disgusting. Viola is an icon for going against that with her whole being and soul.

The Librarians Gargoyle is a wonderful read with a lot of heart, soul and giggles. I adored both Viola and Boudicca. Their relationship felt natural and easy, like breathing. I felt for Viola having to deal with her family not believing in her dreams and trying to marry her off. Thankfully this has a HEA!

I can't wait to read more from this author!

“The Librarian’s Gargoyle” by Evelyn Shine is a sweet and actiony romantasy set in early 20th century Paris. Viola is motivated by her scholarly work–a search for magic–and repulsed by the societal expectations of marriage/children that her family is pressing upon her. When her position at the library is threatened and an undesirable engagement looms, Viola's research efforts intensify. Meanwhile, an alluring woman called Boudicca attracts Viola's attention who, unbeknownst to our heroine, is actually a majestic gargoyle that Viola has visited and told stories to since childhood. Viola balances her growing attraction to Boudicca with the time-sensitive goals of securing her future as a librarian and husband-free woman.

Shine exhibits masterful action sequences and romantic scenes, and I found these segments to be the strongest and most page-turning parts of the story. The novel is advertised “cozy”, and while it does have many cozy moments, I think it will appeal more to readers who enjoy thrills. I really enjoyed the central characters, Viola and Boudicca, and appreciated their moments of badassery, vulnerability, and growth.

The secondary characters were also interesting, but at times I struggled to understand their behavior and/or why Viola interacted with them the way she did. For example, Viola's father has historically supported Viola's "unusual whims" (e.g. pursuing a career) yet he forces her to pursue a marriage she clearly doesn't want, right up until the very end where he suddenly changes his tune and amends “I just want you to be happy.” Elias is quickly revealed to be quite the asshole; yet Viola, who is established as a smart person, acts as though she truly believes that he will uphold his “bargain” to break their engagement. I did very much enjoy Xander and their family of gargoyles; these were all secondary characters who I felt were well-established and understandable.

I received an ARC of "The Librarian’s Gargoyle" from the author, and this is my honest review.

Magical, funny, empowering and sweet monster romantasy. I enjoyed reading this book and it feels like it could be longer. I would love to read more adventures of Viola and Boudicca. There is so much potential there. I will definitely read the sequel when it comes out about another gargoyle falling in love.

*Thanks so much to Netgalley and Tantor Audio for an ALC in exchange for my honest opinion*

I am waffling between a rating of 3.5 to 4 stars! I think I'll give the story 3.5 stars and add an extra half star for the narration!

Initial thoughts:
This was so fun! Also, didn't realize it was queer when I picked it up!?! What a fun surprise (that wouldn't have been a surprise if I had paid any attention LOL)!

About the story:
Viola is tragically misunderstood by her family. The youngest of many, she is often forgotten. Once she was older, Viola followed her love for books and became a librarian to get away from her family and help educate children in Paris. Things start to go downhill when she is SACKED from her job and told her fiancé is on the way (whom she did not agree to marry). Not only that, but a mysterious and attractive woman suddenly appears in Viola's life, and she has never felt more seen or at ease with someone than Boudicca. Things become even more strange as Viola studies the magic she is so certain is alive in the world and mysterious creatures start attacking her in the night.

Things I enjoyed:
- The writing style is very smooth and easy to read!
- As a librarian, it is clear to me that our author did her research! Many of the things Viola says about her library are accurate to issues in current day libraries.
- I love Boudicca!! We must protec at all costs <3 (Even though Boudicca is strong enough to beat everyone up for us)
- I loved the queer rep! I didn't really read the description or look at the cover, so this was a pleasant surprise to me.

Room for improvement:
- This was set in the early 1900s, yet the language was very modern. I don't think they were talking about "manifesting" goals that way back then.
- This had a little bit of action, of coziness, of romance, of feminine rage, of mystery. While I enjoyed all of those things, it kind of felt like the story didn't quite know what it wanted to be.
- I wanted more of a conclusive ending and wrap up with Elias, but I suspect we might see more of him as the series continues.
- Viola felt a liiiiitle whiny at times. Yes, she absolutely is allowed to be enraged at her family trying to force her to marry someone against her wishes, but she also had a very 'woe is me' attitude at times when she literally had every need provided for, and then some.

About the audio:
I thought the narrator was excellent! The breathy voice they used for Viola wasn't my favorite, but their ability to differentiate characters was excellent! I loved the voice they used for Boudicca.

Stars: 5 Stars
Format: Digital
Series: Stone Awakenings Book 1
Steam Level: Steamy

I read this for the 2025 Sapphic Book Bingo reading challenge for the prompt Sapphic Fantasy.

Talk about LOTS of fun and a joy to read.

Quick Thoughts:
- Love this cover. It’s what initially caught my eye
- There is something about gargoyles that I enjoy reading romances about, making it sapphic made me one click this book immediately
- Now that I’m thinking about it, I blame the 90s cartoon for my obsession
- Loved the world building and how it is wrapped around Paris in 1912
- Viola is basically Evie from The Mummy and I’M HERE FOR IT (my inner baby gay is squealing in delight)
- Boudicca’s siblings and Viola’s friends are great and I hope we get books for all of them
- The character arc Boudicca goes through felt believable and invested
- At one point I wanted to smack Zander but they are actually an upstanding, sweet character who was just wrong about some stuff
- But I want to toss all of Viola’s family into the Seine
- This is book one of a series that has an overarching storyline so not everything is explained in this book
- This being said nooooooo when’s the next book?! I have to know what’s going on!

Overall I loved this so much I immediately followed this author to keep up to date on everything she writes. I’m even going to check out her other non-sapphic books. This book would be a great introduction to Monster Romances if you haven’t read one before.

Set in early 1900s Paris, this historical fantasy beautifully blends magic, mystery and whimsy, transporting you to a world of magical libraries and hidden portals leading to grand revelations. Since childhood, Viola sought refuge on a rooftop, sharing her thoughts and dreams with a gargoyle statue, thinking it was just stone. Spoiler: it wasn’t. That statue? Totally alive and very much part of the magical world Viola’s been trying to uncover. After a few steamy moments and some miscommunications, Viola and Boudicca’s (Iggy’s) relationship soars. Their chemistry is spectacular, and I was swooning over all their interactions.

If you’ve ever wished Elisa (1994 Gargoyles) had stayed a gargoyle for more than one episode, or if you’ve imagined Demona as a cinnamon roll (though her morally gray character was iconic, tbh), then The Librarian’s Gargoyle is the book for you.

This magical sapphic romance will have your heart soaring alongside its captivating characters, with a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and intriguing moments. Plus, the empowering female characters will leave you dreaming of being swept into the strong arms of a gorgeous gargoyle, flying over the Parisian skyline. It’s magical, romantic, and just the right kind of adventurous.

And can we talk about the cover? Gorgeous!
This is the perfect sapphic monster romance for anyone craving a magical Parisian escape.
