I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that this wasn't exclusively geared toward primary grades! The authors make a very compelling point for utilizing morning meaning in upper elementary school and middle school and give developmentally relevant ideas for implementation. I taught primary for 5 years and always had a morning meeting. When I moved up to 5th grade, I ditched it, thinking it was a waste of time and too young for my group. It appears that I was wrong! I have already seen an improvement in the cohesiveness of my classroom community. After 6 days of morning meeting, even my shyest kids felt comfortable enough to do the Cha Cha Slide with the rest of the class during rainy day recess- I attribute this to morning meeting and the feeling of belonging that it brings. I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops throughout the rest of the year and whether it will continue to be as effective.
Along with my "Energizers" book, this text is another valuable and irreplaceable teaching tool in my classroom. Morning Meeting is apart of the Responsive Classroom approach to proactive teaching and classroom management. Morning Meeting helps establish a welcoming and receptive classroom environment and helps to start each day on a positive note. The Morning Meeting Book provides helpful information and tips for making Morning Meeting a success in your classroom. It provides numerous ideas for activities, shares and greetings that students grow to LOVE! The Morning Meeting Book also includes ideas for writing powerful morning messages that incorporate academics, word work, and more. I would highly recommend this book to K-8 teachers.
The Appendix is packed with tons of of resources to help you incorporate Responsive Classroom into your practice. Additionally, this book includes helpful scripts, and each chapter concludes with a "Fine Tunings" section that addresses common problems teachers may face when implementing Morning Meeting. This is one of the most helpful PD resources I have consulted, and I look forward to introducing Morning Meeting this year!
I am really excited to include this in my classroom. I can really see how this would influence the classroom culture and provide a way to make sure everyone feels that they are an important part of the classroom community. I also like how it can be easily adapted for a range of age levels.
This is a fantastic resource for those wanting to improve the structure of their morning meetings. The book separates morning meetings into four components: greeting, sharing, group activity and morning message. It also provides multiple ideas for activities and examples for each component which I love! For someone like me who thrives on structure, I’m really looking forward to implementing these ideas! It’s an easy read. I would highly recommend it to any elementary teacher looking to build and improve upon their classroom community.
I've done a class meeting the past two years, more of the problem-solving structure instead of responsive classroom structure. Looking forward to implementing many of these ideas with my 5th graders in the fall!
A loving approach to classroom management that removes the punitive, damaging ideas of 'clip charts'. Responsive classroom techniques are the only thing I have consistently recommended in 25 years of teaching.
This is a great resource for a first grade teacher, like me! I already have a morning meeting, but this book gave me LOTS of ideas and easy, ready to use activities that I plan to incorporate in my daily meetings with my students.
I read this as a refresher because I am doing a training for new teachers. The book is great and morning meeting is such an important part of our curriculum. After many many many years in the classroom, morning meeting is always my favorite part of the day.
I’ve known of morning meeting and incorporated it into my classrooms for years. Yet, this book was very useful to see the 4 part structure, how to deal with challenges, and how to keep it fresh all year long.
An extremely helpful guide to developing and implementing morning meeting practices in the classroom. Plenty of examples and tips to help refine practices. A+

This is my second time reading this book. It was first recommended to me by my professors in my teaching credential program. I read it earlier in my career and struggled to implement it in my classroom because I couldn't validate my reason for taking away instructional minutes from the curriculum and state standards to build classroom community.
8 years later, I know what it is like to use almost every single instructional minute to teach our state standards every day but, I also know how hard it is to deal with upper grade (5th graders) students when they go through their many issues. Bullying is an issue that is garnering a lot of media attention lately and rightly so, schools are implementing more and more training for teachers on how to handle bullying with their students. At one of our trainings at the end of our school year, one of our teachers shared about class meetings and I immediately remembered reading The Morning Meeting Book. Her presentation really moved me and inspired to work on building a better classroom community in my class for the upcoming school year.
So with more experience under my belt, I am ready to implement Morning Meetings in my classroom next year in a wholehearted attempt to build classroom community. I can teach the standards all day long and cram it down their throats, but if my students don't care about each other, then can I really live with myself as an educator? For many years, I was confused about how to go about this because of the high-stakes, test-driven environment that plagues the education system today. I have proven myself as a teacher with students that perform well on the state tests, I need something more than that and I'm ready to make that stand now.
The Morning Meeting book reads well and it provides a lot of research to back up the effectiveness of Morning Meetings (MM). The book includes many examples of how to implement MM in classes of all different grades, including middle school in the 2nd edition. The extensive appendix provides sample greetings and a list of group activities. There are other books of greetings and messages that I'm curious about, but I'm going to start with just this book to see if it's enough or if I should supplement.
My only complaint about this book is that I tend to want more practicality than theory when I read teacher books. I was on board with MM in theory from the get go, I wanted more real life examples of what it looked like in a real classroom. It did provide many examples, but I think the book weighed a little too heavy on the theory side and repeated the some things over and over again that could have been said once.
Overall: It was an easy read and looks like it'll be a great resource I'll be pulling from throughout the school year. The book is organized intuitively and I highly recommend it to all of my fellow teachers.
I went back and forth on this book but think I can start putting this stuff in place for my sixth grade group. Now that I've read it once I'll let it peculate and in a few weeks look at it again.
This book is an excellent resource to any current or future teacher! A very easy read and it is full of beneficial information on how to conduct some or the best morning meeting sessions in any classroom. I personally enjoyed this and learned a lot from it becasue growing up, I never experience a morning meeting in any of my own classrooms but it is interesting to see and read just how important they are. From greeting each and every member of the classroom, discussing current happenings with one another and sharing news/announcements, it is a great way to establish a classroom community! As I said before, I reccomend this to any and all future and current teachers. A great resource. It also includes many different examples of ways to establish morning meetings and it as an entire list of games to play, too!
