The Night #1

Hungry is the Night

Rate this book
In Seattle, the past doesn’t stay buried—it comes back to bite you. The werewolves of the world live in tight-knit gangs, or “dens,” for protection from outsiders—and each other. Every major metropolis has one—to belong to a den is to have a family for eternity. However, Grace Holtz, next in line to lead the Seattle den called the Nameless, has had enough of living under the crushing weight of her den’s expectations. Having fled to a small, rural town in Southeast Oregon, her goal is to blend in and be as “normal” as possible for the rest of her unnaturally long life. But Marcus Bowen, a wolf from the UK-based Feóndulf den—and the closest thing Grace has ever had to a lover—has other plans. Reappearing thirty years after their affair came to an abrupt and bloody end, Marcus needs Grace. He needs her to return to Seattle and arrange an audience with Mama, the current leader of the Nameless and Grace’s estranged grandmother. The leader of the Feóndulf and his heir have both been brutally murdered, and Marcus suspects that Grace and Mama are next. Teaming up to hunt for the killer in the Emerald City, the pair slowly begin to realize their romance might not be as dead as they thought. However, as it becomes clear that the person they’re looking for holds secrets about both their dens, Marcus and Grace must grapple with competing loyalties, conflicting desires, and ultimately decide what matters more—their dens or each other.

Each of us has a part of our personal history that we would like to put into a bin and forget. It is that desire that immediately connected me to the female protagonist in this work, as she tries to outrun her very painful past. This work, billed as a paranormal romance, introduces Grace and her long-lost love, Marcus, as they are thrown together, after decades apart, in pursuit of a resolution to an issue that can bring both to their deaths.

As a relatively unpracticed reader of the paranormal and romance genres, I was surprised to find how engaging and relatable the characters were. Even though they are werewolves, the author does a fantastic job at exposing and exploring their humanity. The wide range of emotions and the situations encountered grounded the work in a way that allowed the reader to fully imagine the world in which our protagonists roam. The story takes us into places where only werewolves dare to tread as well, and those passages are stark and graphic but not in a way that removes you from the flow of the storytelling. The story is told from the point of view of both main protagonists; Grace and Marcus take turns sharing their perspectives of the unfolding action. This presentation of dual perspectives can be tricky, but the author does a great job in making sure the reader will not be confused.

I love a lot of action in books that I read, and this book does not disappoint. We are dealing with werewolves, after all, and the reader should be aware that some of the action includes the unequivocal, vivid depiction of violence. There are passages that are very tough to read, especially one regarding the treatment of dogs.

The romance part of this paranormal work is again, very relatable. Love can be messy and wonderful, infuriating and playful, complex and easy, and often...very sexy. As an older female reader, I found myself pleasantly amused by the playfulness of the protagonists, and a bit overcome by the very intimate and explicit description of the sexual acts. The author manages to infuse the entire work with the push and pull of two partners in love, and so the inclusion of the sex scenes is certainly not unexpected.

Hungry is the Night is the first in a planned trilogy in “The Night” series. The story howls to its conclusion with a lot of action, drama and energy. I can’t wait to find out what is next for our two protagonists.

The first thing that caught my eye was the cover of the book. Very good cover, eye catching.
The blurb cemented me asking to review the book.
Overall, I was entertained by the story. I haven't read many werewolf books.
I was interested in hearing more about the secret societies of "dens" and how they work. I think they'll be more talked about in future books as this is a series.
There's a little mystery and romance mixed in. The main characters are likeable and well defined. The brief description of what happened when the transformation occurs was good. Perhaps in future installments there will be more werewolf scenes.
A solid read and a quick read as well. It doesn't feel "long" by any means. Which is a good thing.
I would read the next book. And ultimately that's a compliment coming from me.
I'd give this 3 and a half stars but I'll bump it up to 4. Just because.

I'd like to thank the Author, publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to review this

I haven't read many werewolf stories or romance novels, but this has me wanting to explore more! Great characters, fascinating world, dark at times but balanced well with a little humor and a couple pinches of spice! I can't wait for more in this series, and I recommend the author's other books as well, the Cadence Turing series.

This was a gripping and exciting thriller that draws you in. Grace is next in line to a werewolf den called the nameless. Marcus is from a uk den called Feóndulf and has hunted down Grace to warn her of a murderer on the loose. There’s disagreements, there’s misunderstandings, there’s action and mystery as we see these ex lovers work together and become maybe more! It’s a great read with likeable and even relatable characters and I look forward to the next book!

This is the first novel I’ve ever read of Robin Jeffrey’s and I really like the writing style. The scene where Grace transforms into her wolf was so well done that I could absolutely picture what that would have looked and felt like.
I didn’t find any content warnings so keep in mind that there are a few spicy moments and there is a scene with dog fights and animal cruelty.
The plot was decent. I loved the backstory of the two dens, The Nameless and the Feondulf, and appreciated the den politics.
There was a lot of history between Grace and Marcus and while there was clearly love between them, I wouldn’t classify this as a romance. Grace was definitely an alpha character and Marcus was submissive, gentle, most like an Omega.
The story does have a happy ending but there wasn’t a cliffhanger or anything that happened that would lead me to believe a sequel is needed.
I received an advance review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I was pleasantly surprised by her captivating writing style. Being new to werewolf-centered books, I was unsure if it would be my cup of tea, but surprisingly, it enthralled me. The story focused mainly on the murders, with only a few snippets delving into the main characters' past relationship. It was interesting that the female character was dominant in the relationship, a first for me.

I was immersed in trying to figure out who the culprit and their reasons This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I was pleasantly surprised by her captivating writing style. Although the book offers an empowering and enjoyable reading experience, there were moments when I yearned for more romance and deeper character exploration, especially concerning the side characters (mainly the villain) and additional layers to the plot. I had hoped for a more profound explanation behind the murders.

The ending tied up all loose ends, making it feel like a standalone book rather than a first in a series. I'm curious to know if the next books will continue the story of Grace and Marcus, or explore the lives of other characters from the book or even introduce new characters from different dens. Regardless, I'm eagerly looking forward to reading the next installment in the series.

"Seattle's hottest new paranormal romance is: 'Awooooo!' This book has everything: friends-to-lovers, matriarchal werewolf societies, and murder."

But seriously, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! My understanding is that this series is a love letter not only to werewolves and their mythos, but also the cities that shelter them. Well, as someone who has lived in Seattle for more than a decade, the author nails the ambience of this strange, technically-advanced backwater. Seattle is definitely a city where the old-world has an uneasy alliance with the new, which also perfectly describes how the werewolf dens of this fictional world relate to each other. I know, it may be odd for a romance-book review to focus so heavily on the setting, but it adds SO MUCH to the story, and is something that I rarely see other romance novels do well (if at all).

Now, how's the sex I hear you ask? STEAMY, a little KINKY, and with just the right amount of monstery-goodness. I am a sucker for a well-executed friends-to-lover relationship, and this book does not disappoint! Technically, it's a friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers loop, which (imho) makes the hook-ups emotionally gratifying (as well as a total turn-on).

Also, let's talk character dynamics: the ladies ROCK in this one, y'all. They have the power, but they're also complex, charming, terrifying, and really damn charismatic. I also like how Marcus (our main man) was a badass, but also squishy/sweet on the inside.

Hmmmm, what else can I say? If you like your paranormal romance with a slice of murder mystery, than this series is for you! There are some serious JD Robb vibes, and the inherent danger of crime just makes things that much more titillating, ya' know? I'm over the moon (I had to sneak one pun in there) about this book, and can't wait for the next one in the series!!!

We have two wolf shifter packs or dens: the Nameless in Northwest USA and the Feondulf in the U.K. The pack alpha of the Feondulf and his son and heir have been viciously murdered, and Marcus Bowen, a half-breed wolf of the Feondulf pack, has been sent to meet with Mama, head of the Nameless, to investigate the murders.

At one time in recent years, Marcus had a meaningful relationship with Grace Holtz, granddaughter of Mama and her intended heir upon her death. Marcus hoped that Grace would arrange a meeting for him with Mama, but when he tracked her down, she made it crystal clear she was having nothing to do with either her grandmother or the pack anymore. She was trying to live a "normal" life.

Mama had a particularly mean personality, coupled with a vicious physicality for a creature of her age. Yet Marcus, being the good guy that he is, wants to warn her that the murders of Colquhoun and his son Aiden may only be the first step in someone's desire to dismantle both the Feondulf and Nameless packs.

Marcus does finally get his meeting with Mama, but it does not go well, and that's all I can say about it. To say that Mama doesn't like Marcus would be a gross understatement.

The mystery of who is behind the assassinations is baffling, but Grace and Marcus are determined to discover the perpetrators and bring peace back to the packs. Will they? And will they be able to salvage and rekindle their previous relationship? The resurrection of the romantic attachment between Marcus and Grace is a slow burn to the point of fizzling out. Frustrating.

The story was well-written and moves along at a good pace. It is a bit more sophisticated than other shifter stories I've read, and that difference held my interest throughout, in spite of a higher degree of violence.

For a slow beginning, it really becomes thrilling before half-way
Quite good, well-written and edited, but it was slow to start. By chapter 4 at about 40%, the book got very interesting. At that point I had a hard time stepping away from it. The further it got into the mystery it really became more of a thriller. Even if the story is about werewolves, they may not die from injuries like humans, but it would still hurt. Injuries and deaths happened a lot until Marcus and Grace figured out some things…
Marcus Bowen is Welch, a police detective from the UK-based Feóndulf den and bitten, not bred, making him “less than” to his den. He has been charged to bring a highly important message to a US-based den, the Nameless. The only safe way to approach their matriarch, “Mama” is to get Grace Holtz’s help since Grace is Mama’s granddaughter and heir to the den. Thing is Grace wants to live a normal life far away from her den. Marcus and Grace have a history which suffered from a bad break up and separated them for 30 years. Since Grace is almost 200yo and Marcus if over 100yo, no sweat! But feelings were hurt and now they are expected to play nice and solve multiple crimes…together. Hmmm. That is sure to go smoothly. Remember the older the werewolf, the stronger she is. Makes disagreements interesting.
If you like paranormal werewolves with a passionate couple and lots of thrills and chills, try this book. Give it time, it will speed up. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through BookSirens.

Hungry is the Night by Robin Jeffrey
The Night #1

This paranormal romance with a bit of urban fantasy feel to it has werewolves with a bit different mythology than previous books I have read and has a plot that poses issues that were also an interesting surprise.

The story begins in Klamath Falls, Oregon with Grace Holtz working in a credit union after breaking away from her werewolf den in Seattle, Washington. The matriarch of her pack had big dynastic plans for Grace that were not in keeping with her own, so she left. Marcus Bowen, an important man from her past, surprises her after a long time apart and requests her help…a request that she ignores…until she can’t.

Great introduction to a new series that has me wanting to know what happens next. I enjoyed reading about how the change occurs for the werewolves, the differences and similarities they have to other werewolves I have read stories about, the bitten versus born differentiation and its impact on the characters, the twists and turns and surprises, being able to thoroughly dislike the bad guys while wishing bad things would happen to them, and the relationship between Grace and Marcus.

This is a new-to-me author that I would gladly read again and look forward to reading the next book in the series when it is available.

Thank you to NetGalley and Booksirens for the ARC – This is my honest review.

What I Liked:
There were a few unconventional aspects in this book that I found interesting. First, this books portrayal of lycanthropy is much more in line with old-school werewolves that are monstrous beasts that stand on two legs than the currently popular shifters that change into large wolves. Second, it was refreshing that the first bedroom scene featured a female acting in the dominant role.

What I Didn’t Really Like:
With Marcus, the male protagonist, being a detective and the book starting out with some unsolved crimes, I thought the book might have the feel of a mystery novel. However, the discovery of the perpetrators and their motives felt a little too easy. Also, the representation of werewolves is a bit darker than I expected with the discussion of whether intentional hunting humans is an acceptable practice. It felt slightly undeveloped for being the underpinning point of controversy that came up repeatedly.

Overall:
I very much enjoyed the first half of the book, but felt slightly unfulfilled by the ending. As this is labeled as the first book in The Night series, I am curious to see where the next book is supposed to pick up. Maybe it’s not really the end for Grace and Marcus.

Hi Y’all! How bloodly..oops I mean how would you like your steak cooked. Have a seat while I tell you about this book I just read.
The title is Hungry is the Night by Robin Jeffrey it is book One in the Night series.
The cover is kinda scary and goes well with the title. Then I read the blurb and it really got my interest because werewolves, estranged lovers, suspense, oh my!
There are a couple trigger warnings mentioned so if hunting and eating humans and graphic dog fights bother you, skip this one or read with caution.

Who’s my favorite main character ? Grace. Though Marcus almost ties. Grace is just such a strong female lead and Marcus a bit weak lol.
The story is a paranormal romance with suspense.
What surprised me most about the book was ? That Grace was a lot older than Marcus. She is 200 though I don’t recall it stating exactly Marcus age just that Grace is older. Also she is born he is bitten.
Were there significant plot twists and turns? Yes. The person doing the murders is a twist and how Grace decides to handle it and the outcome another.
The ending was a good HEA.
How hot was the book? There was a couple fairly explicit scenes, I’ll say 3
If you like werewolves… good ole grisly ones… age gap ( can’t call her a cougar since she’s canine lol) mystery/suspense with some heat and a HEA this is for you!

Hungry is the Night is a very interesting take on werewolf lore. I enjoyed the new twists and turns along the way. The beguiling characters pulled me into the story and kept me mesmerized. The overarching mystery kept me enthralled and reading until the end. Overall, it was a fun and suspenseful read.

While I know their world is more often than not violent, this story seemed to top even what I am used to reading for a werewolf society. In addition, the main characters seemed to lapse into a bit of childish behavior at times that felt disconnected from the story and their interactions. Some events and parts of the story felt disjointed, but for the most part, it was a very good story with a solid plot. The execution is where it falls a little short.

The characters of Grace and Marcus felt like they exchanged roles as the hero and heroine. Macus was a soft hero who seemed pretty helpless at times. I don't know if that is a part of him being bitten and not born a full were or not. While Grace seemed more aggressive and take charge, but perhaps that was due to her heritage and her position in their society.

I really wanted to love this story based on it's description, but it fell a little short for me.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced urban fantasy with spicy romance and a compelling mystery, give this one a try!

Grace, a 200-year-old werewolf who just wants to be normal, has left her den in Seattle for a job in a credit union in Klamath Falls. When her ex-lover Marcus shows up 30 years after their breakup with the news that someone is killing den leaders, she reluctantly agrees to accompany him to Seattle to meet with her den. Kidnappings, fights, and rekindled feelings ensue as Grace and Marcus work together to solve an old mystery and keep each other alive.

I enjoyed the Seattle setting very much. It was fun to recognize landmarks and picture the routes the characters were traveling through familiar neighborhoods. The details of werewolf culture were also fascinating, including the age-old conflicts among the werewolves themselves. Grace and Marcus have great, sexy chemistry and a lot to work out, so it’s a good thing werewolves live a long time. Sex and violence were both graphically and effectively described. Considering the characters, neither seemed gratuitous, but there’s a lot of blood and other fluids. You have been warned.

This review is my own honest opinion and I was not compensated. Thank you to Robin Jeffrey, NetGalley, and Totally Bound Publishing for the ebook.

Marcus and Grace are not on the best of terms. They are basically ex-lovers and it didn't end well, but recent events have caused them to team up to hunt for a killer in the Emerald City.

I really enjoyed these characters! They were fun to get to know and I enjoyed their dialogue.

This was my very first book based around werewolves and I was very impressed. World building for me is so important. If a story jumps right in with little context to what's around them I get confused and won't enjoy the book. Hungry Is The Night had a compelling way of world-building that made reading enjoyable and easy to read.

I look forward to reading more from this author.

This was a different take on the werewolf story and I did enjoy it. The writing style was different and it almost reminded me of a story set it in earlier times, or maybe a slight dystopian feel.
Grace was a strong willed heroine, which was a nice change. The story flowed and there were some really good barbs back and forth between the two.
For me personally, I would have liked to see some affection between Grace and Marcus. For Me this wasn't a romance, this was friends with benefits despite them saying they loved one another.
I also prefer my MMC more Alpha, more dominant, Marcus was sweet, but he came across as a pushover, he let people belittle him, for those that read werewolf stories, he reminded me of how an Omega would act, meek and submissive.

Hungry is the Night was highly anticipated on my TBR list for several reasons. The setting in the PNW/Seattle is always one of my favorites. A werewolf fantasy/lore also made it very intriguing.
When I first started, I was a little skeptical if I would be able to get into it, but man am I glad I gave it a chance! Loved the thrill of being chased/finding the perpetrator, a little gore, learning about the different dens, etc, plus a bonus of even some romance (hello, finally a female in the dominant role!), and it has me anxiously awaiting the next book in the series to see what comes next in the story of Marcus and Grace.

Thank you to NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I took a trip to my local Barnes and Noble today and Robin Jeffrey had a table set up with her books! So of course I had to stop and see which one she’d recommend starting with. I obviously was easily sold on this one when she mentioned werewolves and murder mystery!!

Grace and Marcus were really fun characters to follow during the story. I loved their banter! The whole reason for Marcus reuniting with grace is he needs her help to get a meeting with her den’s leader, aka Grace’s grandmother. The story was a good quick read and fulfilled all of my wants for mystery, romance and werewolves!! I’m excited to see what else is coming up for this series! Robin if you’re reading this it was so lovely to meet you and thanks for the great book 🎉

I must say that I am not traditionally a fan of fantasy romance. However this one caught my attention. It took me a few chapters to get my mind around the characters and into the fantasy role. But once I did it really took off for me. The author wrote in a style that really pulled me in. I soon knew the ones I wanted to kill and the ones I loved. It kept me wondering what the outcome would be with each battle. The story was a good balance of strong emotions, and thought out plans, conflicts of love and loyalty, battles won and battles lost. I will be reading more of this author. Yes, I highly recommend this book.

This was the first time reading anything by this author and I have to say that she pleasantly surprised me. I liked her take on werewolves and the hierarchy within their dens. The romance between Marcus and Grace was well portrayed and the end, while seemingly wrapped up, left room for their story to continue. Since this was the first book in a series, it will be interesting to see if this storyline is expanded on further, or if we will be introduced to new characters with their own stories to tell.

Hungry is the Night is Book 1 of The Night series by Robin Jeffrey. Grace is a born werewolf and Marcus is a bitten. They are in two different dens in two different countries. They have a past together, some parts great and some parts terrible. Someone is killing the heads of the werewolf dens and are targeting Grace and her grandmother. After many deaths Grace confronts her nemesis and a showdown commences. They get their HEA. I recommend this book to all shifter romance readers.

I almost DNFed the one. But I held out at the start and man was that the best idea ever. This one took a few to really get me interested in the story but once I did I was hooked. So if you pick this one up, don't worry about the start of it. Which was slow it gets better as you go. I will totally be grabbing book two of this one. The new lore of werewolf things was a fresh take and I loved it.

To be a werewolf is tough. This story shows the reader how much. Some of the scenes were brusque and hard to stomach. There was intrigue and the works of the packs were kind of mafia-like. I liked Marcus, but Grace not so much, even though they made a good pair. The ending was a bit easy and rushed in my opinion and got me thinking whether it was a trick or not. All in all, I enjoyed it.

Reading this story was a lot of fun! Always been a werewolf fan, and live an hour from Seattle, so the cover of this book caught my eye. The writer's vocabulary and word usage was delightful and made it an upscale adventure to read. It was unusual to find such fine naughty couplings in contrast to several horrific beastly murders, but it worked. I loved the characters, the fresh storyline, and thought the length of the book was perfect. Looking forward to the sequel. Beware the full moon.....

Well well welll

To be honest, I wish this book was a little bit longer. I love the characters, I love the build-up, I love the plot. Coming around to the ending it felt a little bit short. The rest of the book was really good with taking its time and getting to know who Marcus and Grace were to each other and as individuals. The book wrapped up very well. I like the whole book I just wish the interaction with the mystery person had lasted a little longer.

I had never read anything by this author before, so I was pleasantly surprised by how engrossing her prose was. I wasn't sure whether it would be my cup of tea because I hadn't read any books with a werewolf theme before, but I became hooked. Only brief glimpses into the prior connection of the major characters were included in the novel, which mostly concentrated on the killings.

This is an enjoyable read and gives a different take on werewolves and their society. I liked Grace as she was stubborn and feisty and Marcus was motivated and wouldn’t back down. I did feel that some decisions didn’t make sense but overall that wasn’t too much of an error that didn’t detract from the story.
This was an enjoyable read. 4 stars.
