The Only Heart That Matters

Rate this book
I’ve known Mia Powell since the day she was born.

She’s my sister’s best friend, my mom’s God-daughter and the mother of the sweetest two-year old I’ve ever met. Even if she won't reveal who his father is.

When she unexpectedly needs a place to stay, I don’t hesitate to offer up my house on the family ranch. However, I didn’t anticipate Mia’s new boss mistaking me for her husband and the father of her child.

The secrets between us may keep us apart in the real world, but a fake relationship... that's a role I'm happy to play for her.

At least until the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur.

I never should’ve stolen that first kiss. Never should have thought one night would get her out of my system. Never should have grown so attached to her little boy.

When this is all over, Mia and her son will walk away with my heart.

It doesn’t matter though, it’s always belonged to her.

If only it's not mentioned H is a manwhore and how he's slept with a lot of women in every. 10. Pages until about 70% of the book. Like i get it, he's a whore but do we need to repeat it page after page

I liked the surprise at the end about the baby daddy, hence the 2 star rating. Otherwise it's just another book where H loves h so much that he sticks his dick to every available women in his vicinity.

Fmc announces she's pregnant to the family, what does H do? Leave immediately and screw another women at his loft the same night. Author even mentioned it thrice in the book for safe measure. Just so you know, in case we forgot.

In the words of h about her baby daddy after not using a condom - "He has random sex as if it were getting a coffee. Who knows how many diseases he has"

But then goes condom free with H who's just as much manwhore as the OM. Why the double standard among whores.

I was kindly provided with this book (censorship is BS and I hate it but here we are!)

3.5 stars. Definitely just not my cup of tea!

The plot - This is a small town, single mom, childhood friends to lovers story with forfed proximity and found family. There are a few light triggers I think so CHECK YA FUCKIN TRIGGERS PEOPLE. The smut was 2/5 on the spice scale and it’s a HEA in a series of interconnected standalones.
Okay let me start my thoughts with OKAY THEN MS SHELBY. I see you, I see where you were going, I see the process. I do fear, however, I wasn’t the target audience for the tropes in this book. Specifically the last 35%. And that’s on me. However I read it, so imma review it. Take what I say with a pinch of salt.

The MC - Mia was a complicated character to love. What really sold her for me was her son, Sawyer. He is adorable, and seeing Mia as a mom was everything.

The male counterpart - Angus, baby, whilst I hate your name, you are an absolute delight. You fall and you fall bard. You are emotionally developed (lord knows we’re low on the ground for those..) and you have a heart of gold. Loved you.

This heartfelt romance explores family, love and unspoken truths. Gus and Mia have known each other forever, have complex feelings for each other but both have secrets they believe that if they share, the other person won’t like them anymore. So they keep their distance romantically from each other.

But when a potential job opportunity comes along and mistakes Gus for Mia’s husband, a fake relationship ensues.

If you love small town, single mum, childhood friends, forced proximity romances, then you must add this one to your TBR. This story is beautifully written, and has an interesting twist along the way. But it delivers all the heartfelt romance and steam. And when Sawyer calls him ‘Gus Gus’ your heart will melt.

Thank you @lisashelbybooks and @theauthor.agency for the e-ARC of this wonderful story. It is the second book in the Goose Hollow series but can be read as a standalone.

3.5 ⭐️ but rounded up - I really did enjoy this story but I wouldn’t say I LOVED it. It was a cute, small town romance with childhood friends to lovers, single mom, and fake relationship, sprinkled with secrets that definitely made things messy! But in a good way of course.

"There truly is beauty in our scars and watching this man I’ve wanted for as long as I can remember, as he worships my body is like some sort of mommy porn, my mind will play on a loop for years to come."

This book is a touching romance that delves into themes of love, family, and complex relationships. It's as heartfelt as it is heartbreaking. One of my favorite aspects of the book is its emphasis on the concept of family, not limited to blood ties but encompassing chosen bonds.

The FMC Mia Powell, a single mother marked by secrets. Mia's character is engaging and relatable as she juggles motherhood with her past's emotional burdens. Her resilience and autonomy are clear, yet you see Mia's vulnerability, especially regarding her concealed feelings for Angus. Mia's son brings additional warmth to the story, symbolizing the love and safety she desires and the lengths to which we as mothers will go to protect our children.

Angus is a profoundly compassionate and principled man. His instinct to protect Mia and her son is apparent, from their lifelong friendship. The intricate feelings he harbors, ranging from enduring love and protectiveness for Mia to the inner turmoil caused by their feigned relationship, are evident by his inner dialogue regarding his relation and felt responsibility of her brothers passing. His internal dilemma over his dying promise to his best friend to protect his sister while also his own responsibility to his own sister (Mia's best friend) creates quite a bit of tension.

“Loving you is like living on the sun. Trying to exist without you is like existing in the dark. And God, do I need to be blinded by your light. I need you like I need my next breath. My next heartbeat.”

The narrative is propelled by the trope of a fake marriage. The choice to act as Mia's spouse and her child's father stems from a wish to shield and aid her, yet it soon reveals that the boundary between facade and truth is SUPER thin. The romantic tension between the protagonists, with surreptitious kisses and close encounters that underscore their deepening bond. We confront the anguish of unreturned love, the dread of rejection, and the unpredictability of what lies ahead. The emotional stakes are heightened as they deal with the repercussions of their feigned relationship. The connection between Mia and Angus is palpable. The tension and suspense continue to build through unvoiced yearnings, with both protagonists wrestling with their deep-seated emotions for one another and the apprehension of potential loss.

"Last night was Mia. Last night was more. More than a man like me deserves."

The one thing I noted was that her parents let her down and you see the entire Mckinnon clan rally behind Mia and Sawyer, which is really the catalyst for the story; but you never find out if there were ulterior motives at play with their sudden departure even though there were hints throughout the storyline.

“I’m going to worship you.” He places his finger under my chin tilting my head, so I meet his eyes leaving only a breath of air between us. His tongue flicks out over my top lip. “And you’re going to watch.”

If you like these elements, you will love this story:

-Found Family
-Unrequited Love
-It's always been you
-Family Drama
-Single Mom
-Small Town
-Military Hero

Content Warning:

- Brief description off page of combat zone loss.

The Only Heart that Matters is book 2 in the Only In Goose Hollow series! This book follows Mia and Angus (Gus) from friends, to fake marriage, to lovers. It really was a touching romance that touches on themes such as love, family, and complex relationships. It was heartfelt but also heartbreaking at some points. I really enjoyed the found family aspect of this book, whether you are blood related or not the bond this group shares is amazing.

So Mia Powell is a strong, independent, single mom who has a HUGE secret that she’s kept for 2 years. Mia’s character is totally relatable when it comes to juggling motherhood, especially alone. She makes decisions that are in her son’s best interest. Her son is her first and foremost priority. Gus is a very compassionate man who has harbored feelings for Mia for at least a decade. Gus is a protector and he feels compelled to protect his friend and her son by any means necessary. He’s loving, thoughtful and the perfect boyfriend and father figure to Sawyer.

I loved reading the inner monologue of Mia and Gus throughout the story. It made them super relatable because you can see the turmoil and challenges they face and how they talk to themselves through it. We can see what goes through their heads while they are figuring life out. I loved reading about their fake marriage and how as the days and weeks went on they realized it isn’t just some silly teenage crush, they have overwhelming true feelings for each other, but of course they don’t talk about it at first they just figure the other one doesn’t feel the same way.

And a PLOT TWIST! For 2 years no one but Mia knew who the father was, she kept it a secret to protect her son, but now the truth must come out and MIND BLOWN! Was not expecting that. I love how the McKinnon clan always rallies around each other and is always there for support and encouragement.

I enjoyed this book and seeing Gus and Mia getting their happily ever after was amazing. They are both amazing characters who deserve the world. And Little Sawyer I loved how we got a bonus chapter from Sawyers POV a few years later :) definitely pulled at the heartstrings. If you enjoy any of these themes/tropes this book is for you!

Wow, I ate this book up like it was my last meal.
A well-deserving 5⭐️ for Mia & Angus.
Heck, they would get 6🌟 if it was possible!

Mia and Angus have been in love with each other for as long as they can remember only… They never knew the other felt the same way.

Both have considered each other off-limits all their lives.
Angus is Daisy’s brother and Mia is Daisy’s best friend. Mia knows Daisy would never approve of a relationship between her and one of her brothers.
Then there’s Angus, who never felt good enough for Mia and the night she announces she’s unexpectedly pregnant to the family, he knows she’ll never be his.
Plus there’s that tiny thing that he came back from combat and Mia’s brother (his best friend) didn’t.

Guilt is eating him alive and while they have an undeniable crush on each other, both would never act on it.

That is… until Mia and her son need a place to stay.
Guess who happens to have a whole ass house that he built himself?
Yeah, I’m pretty sure no one saw it coming but as soon as Angus finds out, he offers them a place to stay.

From there on out he starts doing the sweetest little things for her and her son. Things that I don’t want to spoil just yet because I want them to warm your own heart.

Okay, maybe just one.
Mia needs a ride to her job interview and Angus offers her a ride and for him to hang out with her son while she has her interview. He’s caring like that.
During the interview the company mistakes Angus for her husband and guess who end up fake dating?
That’s right.
And boy does Angus step up!

Slowly they grow closer and discover both have been crazy about each other for the longest time. One perfect night together turns into two and soon they have to put in serious effort to stay away from each other. But they do. Because secrets are keeping them apart and both know they can never be once they are uncovered.

If you’re looking for a perfect man who falls so hard for a woman and her son, Angus is your man.
Not only did he fall hard, I did too!
Plus Mia, she’s such a strong FMC that tries to figure it all out while being a single mom.
I wouldn’t share this man with just anyone, but Mia deserves him!

It was so easy to get lost in the pages of this book. It had all the good, happy feelings, as Gus and Mia’s grew up together, they families were very close. These two friends had such a deep love for the other but never acted on it. Until Mia gets a chance for a promotion and Gus agrees to be her fake boyfriend.

Theresa story was beautifully written. Mia and Gus were so great together but Mia is holding a secret from everyone. Single mom and ex-military find their HEA.

Oh this books is so good. I loved book 1 and now book 2 is also a banger. Mia and Angus’s story was so good and sweet. I wanted these two together. That twist that the author gave us mouth dropped. That was unexpected. I loved the fake relationship, the close proximity and spice. I have my preference for book 3.

"The Only Hearts That Matter" by Lisa Shelby is a heartfelt romance that beautifully explores themes of love, family, and the complexities of relationships. As the second book in the series, it continues the emotional journey of characters who are deeply intertwined by history, loyalty, and unspoken feelings.

The story centers on Mia Powell, a young mother whose life has been shaped by secrets and challenges. Mia’s character is compelling and relatable, as she balances the responsibilities of motherhood with the emotional baggage of her past. Her strength and independence are evident, yet Lisa Shelby also portrays Mia's vulnerability, particularly when it comes to her hidden feelings for Angus. Mia's son adds an extra layer of warmth to the narrative, serving as a poignant reminder of the love and protection she seeks in her life.

Angus, who has known Mia since her birth, is a deeply caring and honorable man. His protective instincts toward Mia and her son are evident from the start, making him a character you root for. The complex emotions he experiences, from his long-standing affection for Mia to the confusion and conflict brought on by their fake relationship, are portrayed with depth and sensitivity. His internal struggle between what is real and what is pretend adds an engaging tension to the story.

The plot is driven by the fake relationship trope. The decision to pretend to be Mia's husband and the father of her child is made from a desire to protect and support her, but it quickly becomes apparent that the lines between pretense and reality are dangerously blurred. Lisa Shelby masterfully develops the romantic tension between the two characters, with stolen kisses and intimate moments that make their growing attachment palpable.

One of the strengths of the novel is its focus on the idea of family—not just by blood, but by choice. Angus's willingness to step into a fatherly role for Mia's son, even temporarily, showcases the depth of his feelings for Mia and his innate goodness. The dynamics of the family ranch and the close-knit community further enhance the sense of belonging and connection that permeates the story.

The emotional stakes are high, particularly as they navigate the fallout of their fake relationship. Lisa Shelby doesn't shy away from exploring the pain of unrequited love, the fear of rejection, and the uncertainty of the future. The pacing allows for these emotions to be fully explored, creating a satisfying and immersive reading experience.

The chemistry between Mia and Angus is undeniable, and their journey from friends to lovers is both heartwarming and bittersweet. Lisa Shelby's writing shines in these moments, capturing the tenderness and passion that define their relationship. The novel also delves into the theme of unspoken desires, as both characters grapple with their long-held feelings for each other and the fear of losing what they have.

In The Only Heart That Matters, Lisa Shelby weaves a captivating romance that delves deep into the complexities of love, friendship, and the unspoken secrets that bind us. This second installment in the Only in Goose Hollow series brings us the emotionally charged story of Mia and Angus, childhood friends whose connection has always simmered just below the surface.

Mia, a single mom to the adorable two-year-old Sawyer, has always harbored a secret crush on Angus. Despite her feelings, she never believed Angus could feel the same way, especially with the responsibilities that come with being a mother. Angus, on the other hand, has admired Mia from afar for years, never thinking he could ever be good enough for her or her son. But one fateful night changes everything, making it increasingly difficult for them to keep their distance.

The chemistry between Mia and Angus practically scorches the pages, as they navigate the turbulent waters of their evolving relationship. Both are keeping secrets that they fear could shatter their friendship, yet the magnetic pull between them is impossible to resist—much like the waves crashing on the shore, retreating only to return with even greater force.

As their story unfolds, readers are drawn into a world where passion, fear, and longing collide. The bond between Angus and baby Sawyer is heart-melting, adding an extra layer of depth to an already mesmerizing read. "The Only Heart That Matters" is a beautifully written tale of love's power to overcome even the most daunting of obstacles, leaving you rooting for Mia, Angus, and Sawyer to find the happiness they so richly deserve.

The Only Heart that matters is my first book by Lisa Shelby and is the story of Angus “ Gus” and Mia “ Goof”. This is book 2 in the Goose Hollow series and can be read as a standalone.

Mia, the Fmc , is a single mom to her two year old son, Sawyer. Sawyers dad is not part of his life and Mia has been living with her parents. Her parents have just informed her that they sold their house and are moving to Florida, leaving her basically alone and homeless. Enter Angus to the Rescue

Angus, the MMC, has known Mia her whole life. Not only was he her older brother Chris’s best friend, but Mia was his sister Daisy’s best friend. Their lives have always been intertwined. Angus, since leaving the military, has owned a bar and a lot of time crashes in the loft apartment above it and for going his home. When he learns of Mia needing a place, he offers her and Sawyer his house to use.

Mia lands a great job opportunity, pay and even comes with day care in house.. only one small catch, they think Angus is her husband. Both Mia and Angus have been in love with each other their whole lives but never told the other. A pretend relationship could either bring them closer or destroy everything.

Mia and Angus are both harboring secrets in their lives. What happens when these secrets come out? Will they still be with each other? Or will these secrets destroy them?

Overall, I enjoyed this story. I did feel like the first half was a bit slow but it did pick up a bit. If you are a fan of these tropes it was still worth a read. Thank you to the Author Agency for the advanced copy.

This book was amazing! So beautifully written! I haven't had a book that had my stomach in knots in a while, but this book did! The anticipation for what's to come and what's Mia's secret was eating at me!

Both Mia & Angus have had a crush on each other since they were little, but were afraid of taking action because of how close their families were and how they would react. As years went on the reasons not to be together grew. Now they are in a fake relationship to help Mia keep her dream job, but it's anything but fake for for Angus.

Mia and Angus were perfect together. It kinda made me frustrated with how long it took them to get together.

Honestly, this was a heartbreaking book. You could feel the grief and sorrow that both these two had. Being truthful with Mia definitely helped Angus heal from his unnecessary guilt and I was relieved when he finally let go of that guilt.

When it came to the plot twist with Mia's secret, I honestly hated it. I absolutely hated it. It's not a trope I enjoy(not listed in the trop list). I completely understand why she hid the secret, that made sense. I think I didn't like her though process of when she was having this certain "misjudgment" that I didn't like.

Overall it was an amazing story, where the author did an amazing job mending hearts and showing that love can conquer all!

Can't wait for Daisy & Knox' stories!!

What to expect

Small town romance
Friends to lovers
It’s always been you
Secret romance
Single parent
Best friend’s brother
Mutual pining

Mia and Gus have always been in each other’s lives. They have so many shared memories but also secrets they want to keep buried. When Mia needs someone, Gus steps up and becomes her fake husband. The problem is their feelings for each other are all too real but neither want to act on it. They try to ignore their consuming attraction but eventually their chemistry burns too brightly and they give in with a promise of one night only.

I loved their push pull relationship, the way Gus always took care of Mia and her son. How much he loves and respects her. But her secrets have the ability to ruin everything she has with Gus and so she desperately tries to push him away and ignore how good they could be together.

Gus has his own secrets and tries to tell himself that she deserves better than him, but Gus is an amazing man and deserves the world. Playing Mia’s fake husband means everything to him and he wishes it could be real.

When the secrets come out, my heart breaks a little for them both but they deserve their HEA and they work hard to find it.

I highly recommend reading this book but suggest you start with book one as they are interconnected.

This is book 2 in the Only Happens in Goose Hollow Series but it can be read as a standalone (I read it first with no issues). First let me say Wow! If you want an angsty best friend’s brother, friends to lovers, unrequited romance, this is the book for you. So much angst, in the best way.

This is the story of Mia and Angus. Angus is the brother of Mia’s best friend and she has had a crush on him for as long as she can remember. Mia becomes pregnant and doesn’t reveal who the father is and insists that the family doesn’t ask. Angus is convince that Mia’s pregnancy was a breaking point and he comes to the realization that she is lost to him. Fast forward 2 years later and Mia’s life is in flex. Her parents suddenly sold their home and she will be homeless in a matter of months. She also has an opportunity for a great job but she cannot get to the interview because she is having car issues. When Mia’s best friend can’t take her to the interview, Angus steps in. Little did they know that when he’s watching Mia’s son, that her new employers would assume he was Mia’s husband. What follows is a fake marriage and lots and lots of angst leading up to an unexpected reveal.

Wow! This book gives you all the feels. There is angst, friends to lovers vibes, several unexpected buried secrets and an adorable relationship between two people who have known each other forever and never had the courage to reveal their feelings for one another. It rarely happens that a book is so unexpected that I don’t see the twists coming but this book did that. Great read and I have to go back and grab book 1 before book 3 releases. I Love it.

Thanks to the Author Agency for this fantastic ARC.

I'm still trying to pick up the pieces of my heart after finishing this book! Mia and Gus's story is a beautifully messy, emotional rollercoaster that will leave you breathless.

Their history is complex, their feelings are deep, and their secrets are heartbreaking. I loved how the author slowly unraveled their story, revealing the depths of their emotions and the reasons behind their actions.

The family dynamics? Absolutely stunning! Sawyer and his "Gus Gus" will capture your heart, and the Powells and McKinnons will make you wish you were part of their family.

Gus's struggles are real, and his love for Mia and Sawyer is pure. Mia's strength and resilience will inspire you, and her secrets will break your heart.

The writing is gorgeous, the emotions are raw, and the story is captivating. I laughed, I cried, I screamed (again, internally), and I cheered for Mia and Gus to get their happily ever after.

This book is a masterclass in slow-burn romance, childhood friends-to-lovers, and unrequited love. It's a must-read for anyone who loves a good love story, complex characters, and a healthy dose of angst.

So, if you're ready to have your heart ripped out and put back together again, then read this book. But don't say I didn't warn you...

In this book we have Mia and Gus (Angus) two people who grew up together, lived near each other and have been friends forever. Gus currently owns a bar that he bought and renovated after his time in the service. He served with Mia’s brother who unfortunately did not come home. Mia is a single mother who has been struggling living at home with her parents. But, her parents decided to sell their ranch and now Mia is homeless. Gus is willing to let her live in house while he resides in the loft above the bar. Gus also helps her get to important job interview that really increase her income and it’s in her field of study. Now all things seem to be looking up but the job that hired her assumed that Gus was her husband and the father of her son. So they have to pretend to be married until she can clear up that mistake. This book is so incredibly angsty. They both want and long for each other but believe that it will never happen. Gus doesn’t believe that he is good enough for Mia and he is really troubled by his past. Mia thinks that Gus will never love her because she is his sister’s best friend. Many times while reading this book, I wanted to scream at the characters to get over themselves all of this heartbreak for nothing. They just needed to really talk and clear up so many issues. This is just a sweet romantic book of star crossed lovers.

Mia and Angus have been in love with each other for so long but both of them have missed the signs.

But then Mia’s parents decided to sell their home and move to Florida. Now she and her son didn’t have anywhere to go, as she needed first and last month rent. That’s when her friend Angus offered his house for them.

At a wedding they decide to have one night together, to get it out of their system… Mistake right. Now they can't stop their feelings from taking over. But no matter how much they fell in love, they both have some secrets that they need to deal with before they can find their happily ever after.

My first read from this author and it was a good read for me. I totally loved Angus. No matter how much everyone made him out to be a womanizer, he was totally infatuated with Mia and with little Sawyer. Mia was an amazing mother, and she had a great support system, with her parents and all of Angus’s family. These two had so many reasons why they couldn’t be together. But once they decided to be honest with each other, then they had to deal with everyone else.

Loved the story, the characters, especially little Sawyer. And I definitely want to read the next one in this series 😊

I'm never leaving my small town romance era, and I'm completely okay with it. Just leave me here.
This story...GAH! I'm still trying to pick up the pieces.
Mia and Gus--their story was absolutely beautiful and messy and it will grab your heart and not let go. It was definitely a rollercoaster I wasn't 100% prepared for, but was so happy that I got on and held on.
I loved watching the realization of why Gus has all these feelings for his sister's best friend smack in him the face. Watching Mia be such a strong single mother. The way Gus was with Sawyer would be enough to make any girl fall. I mean he furnished a whole bedroom for him, firetruck toddler bed and all. The love he had for Mia and Sawyer was so transparent and real.
Mia was ever the super mom. She 100% made sure that Sawyer came first in all aspects. The secrets that she kept in order to not break apart the family and support system she has will break your heart. I love that she stumbled into the whole fake marriage because of her work. And we all know when there's a fake marriage then it 1000% becomes nonfake real fast.
The plot twist definitely came out and knocked me on my butt. This story was heartfelt and raw. Thank you Lisa Shelby for trusting me with an early copy of this story and thank you to the Author Agency for making it happen.

The Only Heart that Matters was a sweet, small town, single mom, fake romance. I am a sucker for the fake romance genre and this one I did enjoy. Right away I was pulled into the story and trying to figure out who the father of Mia's baby might be. However, this is a secret she doesn't want anyone to know and tries to keep it hidden until she no longer can. Angus was so sweet to Mia and her son. He has loved her from afar for so long and wants to protect and take care of her even though he believes they can never be together. The biggest part of the story I struggled with is his hopping from woman to woman constantly sleeping with someone new, all while claiming to himself, (because he won't tell her) that he wants Mia. I personally feel like this took more away from the story than it added. It made me struggle to like Angus and I really wanted to like him. The chemistry could be felt between the two and soon boundaries are crossed. I definitely felt lots of emotions while reading and often wanted to yell at the characters to suck it up and just tell each other how they feel. Can they overcome the secrets they each carry? Get ready to be shocked with a twist I definitely didn't see coming. Overall it was a book worth taking a chance on. 3.5 stars-By Alisa

The novel depicts a heartwarming small-town romance, intertwining themes of childhood friends becoming romantic partners, single parenthood, and a pretend relationship, all against a backdrop of stirring secrets. The story revolves around the trope of a fake relationship, where a man agrees to pose as Mia's husband and her child's father out of protective instinct, only to find the boundaries between make-believe and reality blurring. Author Lisa Shelby skillfully builds up the romantic tension with stolen moments of intimacy, highlighting the characters' deepening bond.
A key theme of the book is the concept of family, extending beyond blood ties to chosen connections. Angus's willingness to play a paternal role, though temporary, emphasizes his deep affection for Mia and his inherent decency. The setting of a family ranch and a close-knit community amplifies this sense of togetherness.
As the story unfolds, the emotional stakes escalate dramatically as the protagonists confront the repercussions of their fake romance, delving into the complexities of unrequited love, fear of rejection, and the unpredictability of the future, resulting in a greatly gratifying and engaging read.

This is the second book in Lisa Shelby's Goose Hollow series, a tender romance that weaves together themes of family ties, affection, and the power of unvoiced truths. Angus and Mia, who have shared a lifelong bond, find themselves entangled in complex emotions. Yet, both are burdened by secrets they believe could jeopardize their connection, prompting them to maintain a cautious distance in their romantic lives.

The story in this book is nothing short of stunning, complete with a captivating twist that adds depth to the plot. It beautifully captures the essence of romance and intimacy. What captivates me the most in this book is its focus on the significance of family, demonstrating that authentic connections are formed not only through genetics but also through the relationships we commit ourselves to creating.

Woah, did not see that coming! I’m usually not one to be blindsided by a book, but this one got me! I did not see Mia’s twist at all.

Growing up together, Mia and Angus “Gus” have secretly been in love with each other, without the other knowing. They both fight the attraction because of family ties. Mia gets pregnant with her son, Sawyer, and never tells anyone who the dad is.

Gus plays a huge role in Mia and Sawyer’s life. They find themselves in a fake marriage, and playing house starts to become too real. With both of them hiding things from the other, neither see their relationship becoming anything.

After truths come out, they have to figure out if they can overcome their issues. I was really disappointed in the way Sawyer’s dad reacted. I wish we could have seen more of this play out. While the build up seemed to drag on in some places, the blow up from Mia’s secrets seemed rushed.I would have liked to see more of the dynamic between the families and Sawyer’s dad.

This was my first Lisa Shelby book and I’m looking forward to the next of the family’s stories!

One of my favorite things as a reader is finding new-to-me authors. You take a chance and sometimes it's a hit, sometimes a miss. This one is a bit of a mixed bag for me and resulted in a 3.5 star rating from me.

The McKinnon and Powell families are life-long friends and their children have grown up together. I love the close friendship between the two families, and when they’re all together it's a lively, entertaining time. The characters are beautifully crafted and so well done that they feel real. And I love the military hero/single parent romance of friends to lovers with an interesting twist added in.

The repetition and more telling than showing lost my attention and I found myself skimming a fair amount. And for the love of all things romance, if you want me to fall for the hero, don’t keep reminding me what a dog he is. Tell me a time or two and then make me love him rather than telling me a dozen times he's indiscriminate player.

This story has good bones – the plot, the story arc, the character development, the adorable two-year-old boy, and the fascinating twist. There’s a lot to love if you the type of reader who doesn’t mind some extra in her romance reading.

I’m not sure I can adequately convey how much I loved this book. This is my first time reading this author so I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was that by the end of the second chapter, I wanted Mia, Sawyer and Angus to have the happiest of endings.

Mia and Gus grew up together and pretty much loved each other for that long too. Mia is a single mom to little Sawyer. Gus is former military who struggles with guilt from past events. Basically, he doesn’t feel good enough for the two people he loves most. Mia is harboring a secret that will change everything.

Very few books take me by surprise. I didn’t see the ending coming at all. The writing was beautifully done. I loved all of the family dynamics between the Powells and McKinnons. My favorite is for sure Sawyer and his “Gus Gus”. This book is the second in the series but can be read as a standalone. Now, I’m going back to read Callen and Charlotte’s story!
