"Habe ich Sie erschossen?" ruft unser Protagonist am Ende dem Täter zu, was dieser aus dem Dunkeln verneint. Das war wirklich die Krönung an spritzigen Dialogen in diesem Buch. Ich hatte die ganze Zeit beim Lesen das Gefühl, dass sich der Autor hier auf für ihn ungewohntes Genreparkett begibt und er sich zwanghaft stilistisch daran anpassen möchte. Denn von was lebt ein Krimi? Von der Action, oder zumindest von der Aktion. Und daher empfand ich diese Geschichte eines jungen Kiewers namens Samson, der im Jahr 1919 in den Nachkriegswirren seines Landes zwischen Bolschiwiken, Sowjets und Rotarmisten gelangt, als permanent angetrieben. Daraus entsteht dann ein für mich mäßig unterhaltsamer Krimi im historischen Kontext. Das, was für mich Kurkow aber in den Grauen Bienen besonders machte, nämlich die Fähigkeit, atmosphärisch zu schreiben und das einfache Leben im umkämpften Donbass durch Monotonie in Worte zu fassen, fehlt diesem Buch völlig. Es hetzt durch die umkämpfte Stadt ohne das sich eine nennenswerte Spannung für mich aufbaute. Die Lösung des Falls war zudem auch nicht wirklich überraschend.

This was an interesting book. The translation was done well and this was a book I read very quickly. It’s described as a mystery and while there was a mystery it was much more a historical fiction descriptive of the times. The mystery was a little convoluted but was wrapped up well in the end. I liked the character of Samson and I would enjoy reading more of him. It’s 1919 in Kyiv and Samson is a young adult who has just been orphaned. Knowing he needs to find a job he stumbles upon a job in working for the police. His first case involves two murders and left behind at the site is a bone of pure silver, a mystery in itself. This book had a little of everything including hints of romance. This is my first book by Andrew Kurkov but I am very certain it won’t be my last.

Ich habe dieses Buch in der Hörfassung erlebt und daher erst später den Klappentext gelesen. Daher war ich völlig unvoreingenommen, was das Genre angeht, und habe mich erst nach und nach orientiert, dass ich es mit einem Retrokrimi zu tun habe. Nach der von mir vergötterten Walander-Reihe von Henning Mankell habe ich kaum mehr einen Krimi angerührt, mit Ausnahme eben von Retro. Insofern passte das Buch zu meinen Vorlieben, und auch Zeit und Ort – Kyjiw in den Bürgerkriegswirren des Jahres 1919 – interessieren mich. Die Geschichte und die Personen unterhielten mich gut, aber nach der Lektüre von Graue Bienen hatte ich mehr Tiefe der Personen und Handlung erwartet. Vielleicht ist dies eine Folge des unvorbereiteten Herangehens. Vieles in dem Roman erinnerte mich an die Fandorin Reihe von Boris Akunin: der verwaiste jugendliche Held, die Einsprengsel von Magie (Samson kann mit seinem abgetrennten Ohr hören, Fandorin verliert nie im Glücksspiel), die Einbettung in eine Zeit des Umbruchs und die Bindung an eine Stadt. Offensichtlich ist auch dieser Roman als Anfang einer Reihe angelegt. Wenn der nächste Band erscheint, werde ich diesem sicher noch eine Chance geben, begeistert bin ich aber nicht. (aufgerundet von 3,5 Sternen).

Could have been interesting and fun, a detective working in 1919 Kyiv - but in the event this felt like a chaotic mess to me with no clear direction. The silver bone, which sounds like a Holmesian trope and title, takes forever to appear... and then the story is over. Nothing about the writing, the characters or the storytelling spoke to me, but there's a fascinating background here and masses of potential.

Eine grandiose Idee von Andrej Kurkow, sich des Genres eines historischen Krimis zu bedienen, um in seinem Roman eigentlich, beziehungsweise zusätzlich ein Gesellschaftsbild während der bolschewikischen Revolution in der Ukraine in Kiew zu zeichnen. Normalerweise mag ich es nicht so sehr, wenn Romane mit dem Etikett eines Krimis gelabelt werden, die gar nicht ins Genre passen, um das Buch besser zu verkaufen. Hier passt aber streng genommen die Genrebezeichnung sehr gut, denn Protagonist Samson klärt, durch die Revolution als ungelernter Hilfskommissar in eine Polizeieinheit gespült, tatsächlich kleinere und größere Verbrechen auf.
Der Gurardian hat das Buch, respektive den Autor im Zusammenhang mit der Geschichte sogar als ukrainischen Murakami bezeichnet, was wahrscheinlich an zusätzlich eingebauten phantastischen Elementen liegt. Der Vorteil von Kurkov ist, dass er den Roman im Gegensatz zu Murakami kürzer hält und sich weniger hoffnungslos in der Fantasie und im Plot verirrt und verstrickt. Im Gegenteil, die fantastischen Elemente sind punktgenau eingesetzt und bringen die Handlung weiter.
Warum ich diese Mischung und das Ausreizen der Genregrenzen hier schon zu Beginn erwähne, ist auch leicht erklärt. Wer hier einen klassischen Krimi erwartet, wird möglicherweise enttäuscht sein, es sollte aber niemanden davon abhalten, dieses ausgezeichnete Buch zu lesen.
Protagonist Samson hat nach der russischen Revolution Schlag auf Schlag seine ganze Familie verloren, die Mutter und die Schwester sind erkrankt und gestorben, der Vater wurde vor seinen Augen von Rotarmisten umgebracht. Auch Samson hätte sterben sollen, aber da ihn der Vater in seinem letzten Atemzug noch weggestoßen hat, wurde mit dem tödlichen Säbelhieb nur das Ohr unseres Protagonisten abgeschnitten. Samson verlässt den Tatort mit seinem Ohr und positioniert dieses in einer Dose in Vaters Schreibtisch. Am besten ist die fantastische Idee, dass das abgeschnittene Hörorgan noch immer mit Samson verbunden ist und alles, was seiner turbulenten Geschichte in der Umgebung des Schreibtisches akustisch passiert, direkt in den Kopf des Protagonisten sendet. Das Ohr fungiert also als externe Wanze von Samson.
Durch die Wirren der Revolution wird zuerst Samsons große Wohnung von zwei Soldaten besetzt und anschließend Vaters Schreibtisch inklusive mehrerer Kisten mit Wäsche ins nahe Polizeipräsidium akquiriert. Als er sich darüber beschweren will und einen schriftlichen Antrag mit Sachverhaltsdarstellung niederschreiben muss, wird sein Talent für strukturierte Darstellung, logisches Denken und Berichtswesen erkannt. Aus Personalmangel wird er vom Fleck weg als Hilfskommissar engagiert.
Samson wächst sukzessive an seiner neuen Aufgabe und deckt mit seinen unkonventionellen Methoden mehrere Diebstähle und zwei Morde auf. Dabei hilft ihm mitunter auch seine Ohr-Wanze, die die meiste Zeit im Schreibtisch des Vaters im Polizeipräsidium liegt. Insofern ist das Versprechen des Kriminalfalls auf dem Cover eingelöst.
Was ich aber zusätzlich in dieser Geschichte noch bekommen habe, ist ein Sittenbild der russischen Revolution und Invasion der Revolutionsgarden in der Ukraine. Die Gewalt der Bewaffneten, das Morden, die Korruption, Raub und Diebstähle privat und staatlich als Akquise bezeichnet, die Drangsalierung der Zivilbevölkerung, die Angst der UkrainerInnen vor den gewalttätigen Usurpatoren und auch die Kollaboration mit den Machthabern, Bürokratie und der Versuch, nach dem Blutvergießen allem Vorgehen einen rechtsstaatlichen Anspruch zu geben, innovative Methoden der Bevölkerung sich durchzulavieren und zumindest am Leben zu bleiben, bestimmen den Alltag der geschilderten Gesellschaft. Dieser Aspekt der Geschichte hat mir am besten gefallen und die Darstellung erinnert mich frappant an die Situation in der Ukraine 2014 beziehungsweise 2022. Insofern freue ich mich auch schon sehr auf das neueste Werk von Kurkov: Tagebuch einer Invasion, das bereits auf meinem Nachttisch liegt, denn der Autor ist wirklich ein brillanter Analyst.
Der letzte Satz im Buch lautet:
"Ende. Aber Fortsetzung folgt."
Was auf einen zweiten Fall für Kommissar Samson und auf eine Weiterführung der beginnenden Liebesgeschichte mit Nadjescha hoffen lässt. Würde mich sehr freuen.

Longlisted for the 2024 International Booker Prize despute which, as seems unfortunately par for this year, it really is not even close to the finest translated fiction of the year.
Longlisted for the 2025 Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize
Nadezhda responded with a smile. “It appears that literate people like to settle near others of their kind, and it’s the same with the illiterate. That’s how we get educated streets and stupid ones.”
The Silver Bone is translated by the award-winning Boris Dralyuk from novel from Andrey Kurkov, whose Diary of an Invasion has formed an important chronicle of the Ukranian resistance to the Putin's invasion of their country. So I am pleased to see both recognised - but not for this book.
The novel, the first of a planned trilogy (the second has been published in the original and is due in translation in early 2025) is a historic crime-thriller sets in 1919 in a chaotic and divided Kyiv at that time under Bolshevik control, but only temporarily, the city changing hands 16 times in the 1918-1920 period.
As one character proclaims:
“If only someone would win out and take power for good. Otherwise, they’ll all just kill each other – and us, too, while they’re at it.”
Which doesn't make for an analogy to the present-day, rather a contrast as the author noted in the Washington Post:
“The population of Kyiv was divided. Lots of Kyivites were joining gangs to rob the rich. There were unpredictable crime waves at that time. Today, Kyiv, like all of Ukraine, is consolidated, because there is only one enemy.”
The story itself takes half the book to get going; has a prepesterous deus-ex-machina with the protagonist's severed ear enabling him to hear things when it, but not he, is present; and ends up with a rather uninteresting conclusion.
However, the setting of the story is well-done and has some interest, which means I will begrudinginly award 2 stars.
Hopefully part 2 won't be on next year's list as a) that would mean an equally odd choice of books and b) I might feel forced to read it.

This is one of those instances where my personal experience of a book differs from the glowing reviews of journalists and the International Booker judges, who placed it on their long list. I don’t think I read a single review that was less than enthusiastic, whether it was being evaluated as literary fiction or crime fiction. (There were some 2 and 3 star reviews on GR, but they were in German and I didn’t take the time to translate.)
The book has three interwoven elements. It is a carefully drawn picture of Kyiv in 1919, a city that changed hands multiple times each year between 1917 and 1921. This story is set in the spring of 1919, while the Bolsheviks were in control, at least for a while. Kurkov creates a convincing picture of the uncertainty and fear that were pervasive, the shortages of everything from salt to firewood, and the commandeering of previously private goods and living space by the military government.
Then there is the coming of age story of Samson, the protagonist who, in the opening scene of the book loses an ear to a Cossack horseman racing through town. The saber of another takes his father’s life. Samson snatches up the ear, which takes on the magical quality of relaying to him the sounds in any room where it is present but he is not. He had been an engineering student but stumbles into employment as an investigator with the police, a job that provides a measure of security in an increasingly unstable environment.
The third element is the mystery surrounding the titular Silver Bone. In solving this puzzle Samson develops his dormant investigative skills and learns to navigate the ever-changing politics and attitudes of the Kyiv citizenry. Oh, and that all-hearing ear gives him an edge.
So it all sounds good, right? Except that for me it just lacked something. More than half of the book was setting the stage politically and socially. This was done with wit and irony - at times. At other times it seemed to plod along. Once Samson actually got into crime-solving the pace picked up and so did my interest.
I wish I could have liked it more, if for no other reason than to show support for a Ukrainian author during another troubled time in the country’s history. Maybe if other reviews show up on GR they will help me appreciate it more.

A Policeman in Chaos but with Hope
Review of the Harper Via hardcover (March 5, 2024) translated by Boris Dralyuk from the Russian language original Самсон и Надежда (Samson and Nadezhda) (2018).
I had an excellent grounding for Kurkov's The Silver Bone due to last year's read of David Bergen's Away from the Dead (2023) from the Scotiabank Giller Prize longlist, which I reviewed as Surviving the Ukrainian War of Independence 1917-1921. Bergen's tale was over a broader scale and time of the conflict between the various warring factions. Kurkov sets his very specifically in the March to April of 1919 in a Kyiv where the central city is currently controlled by the Bolshevik Red Army, while being subject to marauding attacks from the forces of the Otamanshchyna (The Otaman Movement) of various warlords*.

Kurkov's protagonist is Samson Kolechko who is orphaned and mutilated in the very first sentences of the novel (his mother and sister having passed earlier). Despite the loss of one ear, Samson, who had been an engineering student, finds himself with an extraordinary sort of "superpower" (I prefer that term to the current buzzword of "magic realism") of omnidirectional hearing on one side and (here is the "magic" part) still being able to hear whatever is in the vicinity of his severed ear which is safely secured with cotton padding in a tin box. Think of it as an extension of the idea of people still being able to "feel" a pain or an itch in phantom lost limbs. This feature isn't overdone, but only occurs in a few scenes i.e. the novel is primarily historical fiction and not supernatural fantasy.
Samson is forced to billet some soldiers from the Red Army at his family apartment. When he loses various objects due to the Red Army requisitioning furniture throughout the city, Samson goes to his local police station in an attempt to retrieve his father's desk. His detailed writing skill impresses the police chief who offers him a job and a new career opens up for the young man. Soon he is chasing down various looters and attempting to return stolen goods to victims. Along the way he meets Nadezhda, a young woman working at the Bureau of Statistics. Nadezhda or its diminutive Nadia means "hope" in Russian and Ukrainian. The young woman lives up to her name in trying to make the best of the situation and seeing hope in the future for the country having escaped Tsarist tyranny.

Samson's investigations lead him to eventually zero in on a specific gang of looters who have a seemingly inexplicable goal of silver collection. This becomes centred on the title object rather late in the story so the reader may be wondering when it will come up. I do agree on the title change for the English translation though, "Samson and Nadezhda" would seem to sound too much like a "Romeo and Juliet" romance fiction. Translator Boris Dralyuk provides a very flowing read and adds a helpful chronology of the period and a Translator's Note as appendices.
I enjoyed The Silver Bone immensely due to my interest in this historical place & period (admittedly due to my Estonian heritage & its various parallels) and also my enjoyment of books in the crime and mystery genre and especially the sub-genre of fictional investigators working under an authoritarian or chaotic ruling regime such as Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther novels and Martin Cruz Smith's Arkady Renko novels. So I will openly acknowledge a bias in my rating 😊.

Samson was deafened by the sound of the sabre striking his father’s head. He caught the glint of the flashing blade out of the corner of his eye and stepped into a puddle. His already dead father’s left hand pushed him aside, so that the next sabre neither quite struck nor quite missed his ginger-haired head, slicing off his right ear. He managed to reach out and catch the falling ear, clutching it in his fist before it hit the gutter.

Una novela policiaca que está ambientada en la posguerra tras la caída de los zares en Kiev. No es thriller normal, si vas buscando un thriller que te vuele la cabeza no es lo tuyo, ya que no hay como tal un caso que investigar.
Quizá haya un toque de realismo mágico en esta novela, ya que el protagonista pierde una oreja y aprovecha ese suceso para escuchar en lugares en el que él no esta físicamente presente. Quitando este “toque” de magia, es una novela muy realista, con una ambientación estupenda, en una ciudad y un momento donde reina el caos, la corrupción y sobretodo la violencia.
Si algo hay que destacar de esta novela es el protagonista, para mi ha sido lo mejor del libro, Samson, un joven que pierde a su padre en la primera pagina del libro y que sorprenderá la capacidad de evolución a lo largo de la historia. Un personaje simpático, que va perdido por el mundo, con un nuevo trabajo que se lo toma muy en serio, y que se encontrara con situaciones peligrosas, absurdas y graciosas.
Un libro fácil de leer, que me ha sorprendido para bien, se ha dicho que será una trilogía y aunque la trama queda bien cerrada siempre quedan cositas por donde seguir.

Von Andrej Kurkow habe ich vor kurzem Graue Bienen gelesen, das mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Nun ist ein neues Werk von ihm erschienen, Samson und Nadjeschda. Es spielt 1919, also ca hundert Jahre vor Graue Bienen.
In Kiew wütet die Russische Revolution. Samson wird während der Unruhen zum Vollwaisen und verliert ein Ohr. Er hat mit der neuen Situation zu kämpfen. Es mangelt nicht nur an Geld und Nahrung, in seiner Wohnung werden auch drei Rotarmisten einquartiert. Eher zufällig wird Samson schließlich Teil der Miliz und beginnt in einem merkwürdigen Fall zu ermitteln.
Das Settings dieses Buchs hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Ich mag gute historische Romane, insbesondere Krimis (von denen es leider viel zu wenige gibt). Auch Samson ist ein sehr sympathischer Charakter. Der Krimi an sich ist allerdings ausbaufähig. Etwa die Hälfte des Buches passiert in dieser Richtung fast nichts und dann ist die Lösung auch nicht allzu spannend.
Ich fand auch den Titel etwas irreführend. Er lässt eher an eine Liebesgeschichte denken und Nadjeschda spielt in der Geschichte auch nur eine Nebenrolle.
Ein Highlight war definitiv die Sache mit dem Ohr, das obwohl es abgetrennt ist, selbstständig hört. Das war großes Kino.

Dieses Buch zur heutigen Zeit zu lesen geht noch mehr unter die Haut als sonst. Es ist als wäre es ein Deja-vu, eine Bestätigung, dass Geschichte sich wiederholt und die Leidtragenden die einfachen Bürger sind. Die Geschichte ist allerdings mehr als nur eine Geschichte über den Krieg und einem armen Jungen, der seine Familie verloren hat. Sie ist eine Mischung aus Drama-Coming-of-Age-Krimi. Ich hatte zwar das Gefühl, dass die Geschichte nicht so ein starkes Ende hatte wie der Anfang, trotzdem war es ein lesenswertes Buch. Man bekommt ein Gefühl für den ständigen Zustand von Angst und Terror. Und wie man trotzdem versucht den Alltag zu leben, auch wenn der Tod dein ständiger Nachbar ist.

Weder die Kriminalgeschichte, noch das magische abgeschnittene Ohr konnten mich genug fesseln, dass ich die Aspekte, die mich wenig ansprachen, verdrängen konnte. Natürlich hat Kurkow seine Figuren ganz bewusst so wenig greifbar/emotionaliserend angelegt und mir scheint dieser Stil sehr typisch für viele osteuropäische Autor*innen, aber ich bin einfach ein anderer Lesertyp, ich hätte gerne mehr mit Samson gelitten statt ihm einfach nur unbeteiligt zuzusehen.

Das abgetrennte Ohr bewahrt er fortan in einer Schublade des alten Schreibtisches seines Vaters auf - der unglücklicherweise von der sowjetischen Polizei beschlagnahmt wird. Um den Schreibtisch zurückzuholen, begibt sich Samson auf das Polizeirevier, schreibt eine Anzeige und wird prompt bei der Miliz eingestellt. Die zwangsweise in seiner Wohnung einquartierten Rotarmisten liefern ihm auch gleich seinen ersten Fall...

"Samson und Nadjeschda" strahlt eine ganz andere, humorvolle Stimmung aus, ist aber nicht minder relevant in der heutigen Zeit.
Samson ist ein junger, neugieriger Mann, der unerwartet und durch tragische Umstände zum Vollwaisen wird und völlig ungeplant und unausgebildet in den Polizeidienst in unsicheren Zeiten stolpert. Gerade dieses Unbeholfene und dabei doch Gewitzte an Samson haben mir besonders gut gefallen. Unterstützung erhält unser Protagonist vor allem auf seelischer Ebene von Nadjeschda, die im Laufe des Romans bei ihm einzieht. Als sein größter Trumpf entpuppt sich jedoch sein abgetrenntes Ohr, das auf wundersame Weise weiter hören kann und in der Schreibtischschublade wertvolle Informationen sammelt - was für ein ausgeklügelter Kniff von Kurkow!
Zum Schluss des Buches heißt es: "Ende. Aber Fortsetzung folgt." Das finde ich wirklich toll, denn ich habe große Lust, Samson weiter bei seinen Ermittlungen im Kiew des 20. Jahrhunderts zu begleiten und zu beobachten, wie sich seine Beziehung zu Nadjeschda weiter entwickelt. Dieser erste Band der historischen Krimi-Reihe war für meinen Geschmack etwas zu langatmig und nicht spannend genug, ich denke aber, dass sich die Charaktere samt Geschichte in weiteren Bänden gut entwickeln könnten. Ein Highlight ist für mich jedenfalls die Aufmachung der Büchergilde-Ausgabe von "Samson und Nadjeschda" - das Cover passt perfekt zum Inhalt des Buchs, die Karte von Kiew am Anfang erleichtert die Orientierung beim Lesen und die kleinen Zeichnungen an den Kapitelanfängen ergänzen die Lektüre perfekt. Insgesamt für mich daher ein unterhaltsamer Kriminalroman, der vor allem optisch punkten kann und einen etwas ausbaufähigen Spannungsbogen bereit hält.

44th book of 2024.
So starts The Silver Bone, Kurkov’s newest translated novel from the Russian. I half-expected him to show up on the longlist again (he did last year with Jimi Hendrix Live in Lviv), and also expected him not to make the subsequent shortlist. I say this as a Kurkov fan: I don’t think he deserves it with these novels. I adore Death and the Penguin, but there’s been something missing from the other novels of his I’ve read.
I never really got the claim that Kurkov is a ‘Ukrainian Murakami’ before, but I finally understand and agree now. Kurkov, like Murakami, is one of those writers where once you’ve read a few of their books, you know what to expect. Rather than being repetitive though, it becomes almost comforting. It builds a kind of nostalgia and despite The Silver Bone being set in 1919 Kyiv, the tone made it feel very akin to the other Kurkov books I’ve read, so you get the impression they are all existing in the same ‘universe’ (like when people talk about ‘Pynchonland’). Prodominantly, Kurkov characters are like Murakami characters in that they are incredibly passive: they don’t actually do much. They wander about, they think about things, they drink and call on the same few faces. They always accept strangeness with the same Kafkaesque acceptance.
For this reason, it seems like The Silver Bone hasn’t been very well-received among people I follow on GR. It’s a ‘crime’ or a ‘mystery’ but the titular bone doesn’t arrive until page 200 of 278. The first glimmer of mystery isn’t roused until past page 100. But it was exactly what I was expecting: oddball characters, subtle surrealism (in this case, Samson can still hear out of his severed ear, wherever he chooses to leave it), readable, but listlessly plotless. If you go in looking for a good yarn, a classic crime fiction book, you will be disappointed. If you’re familiar with Kurkov’s dry, black humour, and the languishing nature of his characters… Then this is an enjoyable and fairly typical read. Book 2 is going to be published sometime in 2025 (The Heart is Not Meat) and Kurkov is in the process of writing the third as we speak. Or, well, as I speak. As I write.

رواية جريمة تاريخية من أوكرانيا، تأخذنا الرواية إلى كييف عام 1919م، واستيلاء البلاشفة عليها و"الحرب الأهلية" بين الحمر والبيض وهما فصيلان اقتتلا بعد انتهاء الحرب العالمية الأولى وقيام الثورة البلشفة، تذكرني هذه الجزئية برواية "الدون الهادئ"..
تبدأ الرواية بداية قوية حيث يواجه البطل سامسون كوليتشكو ووالده هجومًا مروعًا ينجو منه البطل بأعجوبة، ومن هنا تقوده خطواته لطرق جديدة في المدينة التي تتعرف على نفسها مجددًا وسط الوضع القائم الجديد وحتى يصبح محققًا في الشرطة .
سلسلة التحقيق هذه بدأت بداية مبشرة وكانت قراءة خفيفة ودافئة .

رواية جريمة تاريخية من أوكرانيا، تأخذنا الرواية إلى كييف عام 1919م، واستيلاء البلاشفة عليها و"الحرب الأهلية" بين الحمر والبيض وهما فصيلان اقتتلا بعد انتهاء الحرب العالمية الأولى وقيام الثورة البلشفة، تذكرني هذه الجزئية برواية "الدون الهادئ"..
تبدأ الرواية بداية قوية حيث يواجه البطل سامسون كوليتشكو ووالده هجومًا مروعًا ينجو منه البطل بأعجوبة، ومن هنا تقوده خطواته لطرق جديدة في المدينة التي تتعرف على نفسها مجددًا وسط الوضع القائم الجديد وحتى يصبح محققًا في الشرطة .
سلسلة التحقيق هذه بدأت بداية مبشرة وكانت قراءة خفيفة ودافئة .

Ein historischer Roman, der als Krimi daherkommt oder umgedreht, evtl. sogar der Beginn einer Krimireihe mit magischen Elementen – ich bin nicht so ganz schlau daraus geworden, was dieses Buch sein will. Der Protagonist Samson verliert in den Bürgerkriegswirren nach dem 1. Weltkrieg in Kiew seinen Vater und sein Ohr. Er ist nun Waise und versucht eher mechanisch als überlegt sein Überleben zu sichern. Die Hausmeisterin will ihn mit Nadeshda verkuppeln und tatsächlich bahnt sich etwas an, das bis zum Ende des Buches im Ungefähren bleibt. Die Requirierung von Nähmaschinen und Möbeln, die Einquartierung von Rotarmisten, die Überfälle und Kämpfe auf den Straßen, die Diebstähle und Raubzüge zeichnen das Chaos, das in Kiew 1918/1919 geherrscht haben mag. Zufällig gerät Samson in den Polizeidienst, der Gelegenheit bietet, die Zeit des Umbruchs aus der Sicht eines jungen Mannes aus bürgerlichem Hause zu zeichnen. Dabei ist seine Haltung zur politischen Situation nicht klar, nur pragmatisch. Er entwickelt jedoch einigen Ehrgeiz, um seinen ersten Fall zu lösen. Zu Hilfe kommt ihm sein abgetrenntes Ohr, mit dem er weiterhin hören kann, auch wenn sich dieses weit entfernt befindet. Dieses magische Element ist eine schöne Idee, aber wird von Samson nur wenig genutzt. Zeitweise sah ich darin eine Parallele zum langen Haar des mythischen Samson, aber Nadeshda zeigte keine Anzeichen, eine Delilah zu werden.
Ich las das Buch gerne und ließ mich von der Spannung der Kriminalgeschichte mitreißen. Viele Fährten und Anhaltspunkte warteten auf eine Aufklärung. Nachdem sich der Druck stark aufgebaut hatte, war die Auflösung wie ein leiser „Plopp“ und die Geschichte war zu Ende. Viele Fragen blieben offen, die Aufklärung war mir zu knapp und brachte die Fäden nicht zusammen. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass mir dicke Bücher, in die man eintauchen kann, besser gefallen. Hier hatte ich den Eindruck, dass alle Themen zu kurz kamen: die Historie wird nicht klar, ich habe sie nachgeschlagen und einiges gelernt, hätte mir aber klarere Bezüge im Buch gewünscht, das magische Element spielt zu sehr eine Nebenrolle und auch Nadeshda bleibt zu sehr eine Zutat, obwohl sie im Titel steht. Der Kriminalfall war für mich nicht immer logisch und bei allem Rechercheaufwand von Samson angesichts der politischen Wirren unbedeutend.
Besonders gut gefiel mir, wie die Bevölkerungsstatistik in das Buch eingebaut wurde, die viel über Kiew 1919 aussagte. Mir gefiel die Vielfalt der Bevölkerung, die sich zwar aus nichtigem Anlass oder einfach nur aus Angst vor dem anderen gegenseitig umbringen, deren geringe Gewaltschwelle aber gesellschaftliche und individuelle Ursachen hat. Als einzelnes Buch erschien mir die Handlung jedoch nicht rund genug.

Comme beaucoup, j'ai découvert Andreï Kourkov grâce à son "Pingouin". Qui m'a donné une folle envie de continuer à lire cet auteur.
De nouveau conquis. Enquête en 1919, à Kiev. Période particulièrement trouble, complexe et inquiétante, d'après-guerre, de révolution soviétique toujours balbutiante, de raids meutriers de cosaques bandits, de bandits tout court, de rationnement, de réquisitions absurdes.
Dans un contexte historique minutieusement analysé, brossé avec humour et dérision, comme Gogol (Le Révizor) avant lui, dans une précédente période, Kourkov se moque de la bureaucratie naissante soviétique, totalement immergée dans une paperasserie inefficace et la corruption. Un système catastrophique qui allait quand même durer 70 ans au profit d'une nomenklatura de 5% exploitant les 95% restants.
Un jeune ingénieur est donc engagé comme policier, première absurdité, il s'appelle Samson, et illico envoyé avec les pleins pouvoirs (de nombreuses attestations pleines de cachets et tampons). Et Samson est un hyper minutieux, son job, pour lequel il n'est pas formé, il le fait avec courage, intelligence, honnêteté et efficacité. L'exception dans le paysage de l'époque.
Dans une enquête très sérieuse, Kourkov saupoudre de ses épices d'humour, de légèreté et d'absurde. Et tout passe merveilleusement bien cette superbe fresque sociale d'une période trouble et passionnante.
Un récit truffé d'une myriade de descriptions visuelles, sensorielles, gustatives qui immergent totalement dans le lieu et l'époque, sans jamais le moindre ennui, un ravissement au contraire. Extraordinaire richesse d'écriture, et certainement un superbe travail du traducteur de la version en français.
Je vais poursuivre la découverte d'Andreï Kourkov, je m'en délecte à l'avance.

Not quite sure how this got nominated for the International Booker Prize, if I'm being honest. It's a 'mystery' (and I use that term lightly because the real mystery of the story doesn't start until well over halfway through the novel) set in 1919 Kyiv and follows a young man who, on the first page, witnesses his father's murder and loses one of his own ears. That ear comes into play in a sort of surreal/fantastical way that assists him in his new role as inspector for the police, a job he falls into unexpectedly.
It's not quite historical fiction focused solely on recreating a time period and examining its impact on the present day (though the tension of this unstable period in Ukrainian history is surely the best part of the novel), and like I said the mystery elements are quite weak. So I just don't see much substance in this story? I can't quite pin down what this book is trying to do and what the judges saw in it. If I were not trying to read the whole longlist, I probably would've given up on this one by the halfway mark...

As it stands, an Andrey Kurkov novel is the equivalent of comfort food: you know you’re going to meet likeable characters, that there will be a balance of funny bits and tragic ones and general feel good vibe. Yet, the three Kurkov novels I’ve read a different in their own way bar the setting.
The Silver Bone is the first part of a planned trilogy of police procedural mysteries set during the 1919 Soviet occupation of UK. As of typing, the second volume is already out in Ukrainian and Kurkov is working on the third. A little bit of a tangent but I felt that info was needed as I do like that fact that Kurkov is taking genre fiction and giving it a new dressing.
The main protagonist is Samson Kolechko, an engineer by profession. After seeing his father being killed by soldiers and then having his ear sliced off, he feels that his career has gone to a standstill.
Things get worse when two soldiers decide to live with him and he discovers sacks of stolen goods. Once he goes to the police to report, he is offered a job and he sets off investigating a series of murders which connects the soldiers, a tailor and a large bone covered in silver.
The crime is secondary as the importance is on Ukraine under Soviet rule; houses were repossessed, soldier lived with people, theft was rife, businesses went down, people could not hold a profession. Yet despite the bleak landscape Kurkov still manages to inject his trademark humor. tragically when Boris Dralyuk finished translating The Silver Bone, Putin invaded the Ukraine, thus making the book oddly prescient.
One cannot help liking the characters in the novel. There were many times I smiled, humor is one of the better ways to get a message across and it works here. Probably what makes me enjoy Kurkov’s writing is that he always sees a glimmer of light in everything, no matter how tragic and in these times, it does help.

Im Kiew des Jahres 1919 herrscht nach der Revolution noch ein ziemliches Chaos, in dessen Wirren der junge Samson wie die Jungfrau zum Kinde zu einem Job bei der örtlichen Polizei kommt. Es gilt dann auch gleich, den Fall eines ermordeten Schneiders zu lösen. Ich muss leider feststellen, dass mich dieses Buch eher enttäuscht hat. Der Protagonist sowie sein Love Interest Nadjeschda bleiben blass ebenso wie die Beziehung zwischen beiden. Der Kriminalfall ist auch eher einfach gestrickt. Das Setting ist spannend und die Leser*innen erfahren einiges über die damalige Situation in der Ukraine und die verschiedenen politischen Gruppierungen, die sich damals bekämpften, aber insgesamt kommt der Roman nicht über eine nette Lektüre für zwischendurch hinaus.

3.5 stars. I really love Kurkov’s humour and writing style and I don’t usually gravitate towards mystery thrillers like this but Kurkov makes it so much more fun. His dialogue is sharp and witty and I love how his stories have such a unique vibe with an off-kilter magical twist to them. I didn’t like this quite as much as Jimi Hendrix Live in Lviv so I have to rate it lower, but it’s great to read another book full of a cast of strange characters running around a city trying to solve a riddle. He is such a fun author and definitely need to get to Grey Bees at some point.

Andrey Kurkov verortet diesen Krimi im Zeitalter der revolutionären Wirren in Kiew. In manchen teilen lehnt er sich dabei an Bulgakows "Die weiße Garde" an, die wenngleich etwas zäh, diesem Roman um Meilen voraus ist, auch wenn Kurkows historische Schilderungen ihren Reiz haben. Die eigentliche Krimihandlung ist teils blaß und da wo es spannend wird, erfolgt alsbald die Auflösung. Das Ende ist dann einfach nur banal.

Erinnerte mich an Simenon und Eduardo Mendoza (Die Wahrheit über den Fall Savolta). Ich habe den Roman gerne gelesen und freue mich auf die angekündigte Fortsetzung.

The Silver Bone was an enjoyable read, a historical mystery with fabulist elements (they're quite small so I would hestitate to call the entire thing fabulism). Kurkov quite satisfyingly brings 1919 Kyiv to life off the page and the translation is deft and readable. The mystery itself takes a little while to get going, but it's intriguing enough once it does. The only real issue I would have with the book is that the resolution to the mystery felt like a bit of a damp squib, but I otherwise enjoyed this one well enough.

It’s 1919 in Kyiv, Ukraine, where things are roiling in chaos. The First World War is over, but the Tsarist Russian empire has crumbled and Ukraine is experiencing ongoing violence as several political factions, including the Bolsheviks, struggle for dominance. The opening sentences leave young engineer Samson Kolechko an orphan, as his father is cut down by the sabre of a passing Cossack on horseback and Samson’s ear is severed. With very few infrastructure institutions still functioning, Samson has nowhere to practice his profession, but when he goes to the police to report two Red Army soldiers billeted with him for thieving, his coherent and literate report lead to an offer to join the police. With absolutely no training other than a couple of hours of instruction in how to shoot, Samson has to learn on the job, with precious little guidance from his superiors. His first big case is a double homicide, and a solid silver femur found on the premises one of the only clues.
Interesting because of the comparisons that can be drawn with the current situation in Ukraine and its picture of people getting by in a chaotic political landscape.

Zastanawiałam się, jak przedstawić Wam „Srebrną kość” ukraińskiego autora Andrija Kurkowa, by oddać jej charakter i zachęcić Was do sięgnięcia do tę nietuzinkową powieść. Dlaczego okazało się to niełatwym zadaniem? Bo zdecydowanie wychodzi poza ramy gatunkowe. Z jednej strony można ją określić jako kryminał retro, historycznie osadzony w brutalnym, pełnym absurdów i chaosu porewolucyjnym Kijowie 1919 roku. Z drugiej z powodzeniem zaliczymy ją i do gatunku literatury pięknej z subtelnym elementem realizmu magicznego, który zaskakująco dopełnia fabułę.
Autor obdarza swojego, młodego, doświadczonego przez los bohatera, Samsona, nie tylko determinacją, wolą przetrwania i elastycznością w dostosowywaniu się do trudnych warunków, ale też sprytem. Chłopak potrafi myśleć i wyciągać wnioski, a co ważniejsze kieruje się wyniesionym z domu kodeksem moralnym, którego nie zmienia otaczająca go zewsząd śmierć, pasywność i egoizm. Budzi tym samym w czytelniku ogromną sympatię. Ale jeszcze większą ciekawość, bo zostając okaleczonym zyskuje niecodzienną, wręcz szpiegowską umiejętność.
Przedstawiony przez Autora świat jest surowy i brutalny, a wplatany w fabułę czarny humor i pełne absurdu sytuacje pogłębiają wrażenie jego groteskowości czyniąc go przekornie na wskroś prawdziwym. Doskonale oddana atmosfera rozpadającego się porządku, w którym jednostka musi znaleźć swoje miejsce i sens w otaczającym ją zewsząd chaosie zostaje wzmocniona poprzez przypadkowość przyjęcia niedoświadczonego Samsona do milicji w charakterze śledczego. Niespodziewanie jego często niekonwencjonalne metody śledcze i wynikające z niewiedzy decyzje zaczynają nabierać wagi, a nabyta specjalna umiejętność okazuje się cennym atutem.

Kijivas, 1919 metų pavasaris. Pogromo metu kazokai nužudo Samsono tėvą, o jam pačiam kardo smūgiu nurėžia ausį. Kijevą valdo bolševikai, tačiau jie menkai kontroliuoja padėtį. Gyventojai apiplėšinėjami, o miesto pakraščiuose siautėja atamanų gaujos... Netyčia (skamba kvailai, bet yra būtent taip) Samsonas tampa milicijos darbuotoju. Pirmiausiai jis imasi tirti nusikaltimus, kuriuos įvykdė pas jį į butą įkeldinti Raudonosios armijos kareiviai. Įrodymus (kad tiedu plėšė turtingesnių kijeviečių butus) jam padeda rinkti ir... nukirstoji ausis. Keistokas tekstas. Galėtum gal pavadint detektyvu su... nežinau – magiškojo realizmo lašeliu? Na, bet to tikrai tik lašelis. Parašyta šiaip gerai, skaniai. Laikmečio paveikslas kaip gyvas. Ir detektyvinė linija atrodo neblogai, bet tik kol nenusikapstome iki finalo. Gaunasi kaip su tuo bičiuku, kuris pas kalvį mokėsi. Visą knygą mums pasąmoningai bruko kažką toookio, o pabaigoje davė šnipštą. O knyga buvo Bookerio longliste. Hm. Bet parašyta tikrai puikiai.

Die Geschichte wird erzählt zur Zeit der Russischen Revolution im Kiew im Jahr 1919. Samson und sein Vater geraten zwischen die Front, sein Vater wird getötet, ihm wird säbelschwingend ein Ohr abgeschnitten. Traumatisiert schlägt Samson sich zurück in Richtung seiner Heimat, wo er in der ehemaligen Familienwohnung Zuflucht findet. Als sich Rotarmisten ungefragt bei ihm einnisten und ihm auch Sachen aus seiner Wohnung nicht ganz zulässig abgenommen werden, u.a. der Schreibtisch seines Vaters, macht er sich auf den Weg zur Polizeistation, um diesen zurückzuholen. So landet er plötzlich im Polizeidienst und vermutet plötzlich, dass die eingenisteten Rotarmisten Diebstahlgüter in seiner Wohnung horten. Es stellt sich heraus, dass noch andere Dinge im Gange sind und Samson und seine Kollegen beginnen zu ermitteln. Im tiefer graben sie sich in den Dschungel der Diebstähle, stoßen auf einen Mord und zu guter Letzt muss Samson selbst um sein Leben fürchten. Im Zuge all dieses Chaos lernt er Nadjeschda kennen. Er verliebt sich.
„Samson und Nadjeschda“ ist ein historischer Kriminalroman. Kurkow spinnt die russische Geschichte perfekt in die Geschichte ein. Die bildhaften Beschreibungen lassen einen gut erahnen, wie es zu der Zeit dort zuging. An vielen Stellen ist es spannend, an sehr vielen aber auch extrem unspektakulär. Der Titel des Buches erschließt sich mir jetzt noch nicht genau, hat Nadjeschda für mich derweilen nur eine untergeordnete Rolle, streift den Roman irgendwie nur wie Staub.
Es hat phasenweise Spaß gemacht zu lesen, dennoch war es mir an einigen Stellen zu langatmig, daher habe ich mich auch immer wieder davor gedrückt weiterzulesen. In einen Folgeband würde ich ggf. nochmal reinlesen, vielleicht muss man sich an den Stil von Kurkow gewöhnen. Alles in allem hat es mich vom geschichtlichen Aspekt her gut unterhalten, wenn auch nicht vom Hocker gepustet.

I discovered Kurkov with "Grey Bees", which I loved. This one is the first in a mystery series,and his usual wit, insight and keen eye for character are evident. It´s not much of a mystery, but as an atmospheric,acute observation of the times,with a very unique interesting detective, it´s a very promising start.

I have read all of Andrey Kurkov's novels that have been translated into English. This book is the first instalment of what appears to be a comic yet surreal crime series with the main protaganist being a young man named Samson.
The novel is set in 1919 in the city of Kyiv which is under control of the Soviets but the White armies of the west are menacing them with the result of neighvbours not trusting each other.At this time Samson witnesses the murder of his father by Cossacks leaving him an orphan. He himself loses an ear,[ which he keeps], as a result of this attack which leaves him with an uncanny enhanced ability to overhear converstions from a distance
When his home is requistioned by two soldiers of the Red Army he finds them to be thieves and wishes to stop their activities he joins the Govwernment police whereby he stumbles into a worls of murder and intrigue.
The novel is typical of Kurkov's writing,full of comic and magical realism. It is playful and subtle and quite absorbing. A modern day Mikhail Bulfarov
The only downside of the book is that the ending was unfinished so we have to await the next book to maybe find the outcome. I believe there will be at least three books in the series
