JUSTIN NEWLAND’s novels represent an innovative blend of genres, from historical adventure to supernatural thriller and magical realism.
Undeterred by the award of a doctorate in mathematics from Imperial College, London, he conceived his debut novel, The Genes of Isis (Matador, 2018), an epic fantasy set under Ancient Egyptian skies. His second book, The Old Dragon’s Head (Matador, 2018), is set in Ming Dynasty China in the shadows of the Great Wall.
The third, The Coronation (Matador, 2019) is set during the Great Enlightenment and speculates on the genesis of the most important event in the modern world – the Industrial Revolution. The Abdication (Matador, 2021) is a mystery thriller in which a young woman confronts her faith in a higher purpose and what it means to abdicate that faith.
At this point in his writing career, after four self-published books, Justin was offered a part-funded contract with the Book Guild.
The Mark of the Salamander (Book Guild, 2023) is the first in a two-book ‘The Island of Angels’ series. It tells the epic tale of England’s coming of age during the Elizabethan era. The second in the series, The Midnight of Eights (Book Guild, 2024), charts the uncanny coincidences of time and tide that culminated in the repulse of the Spanish Armada.
His latest novel, as yet unpublished, is THE SPIRIT OF THE TIMES. It features a young Kyrgyz woman’s journey westwards along the Silk Road amongst a supporting cast of Genghis Khan, the Black Plague, a perplexing rhyme, a ring of roses, and the greatest mystery of all – the spirit of the times.
He’s exploring ideas for the next novel – a retelling of the legend of King Arthur Pendragon, the once and future king.
Justin’s enduring passion is to explore the origins of our current time. This prompted a broad research into what we’ve inherited from history – encompassing Egypt, China, Prussia and Tudor England. As well as the novels, he’s written a variety of entertaining talks, which he gives to the WI, U3A, Probus and Rotary. See the website for more information.
Alongside the talks, Justin promotes his work through regular book signings at TG Jones (ex. WH Smith) through which he has sold over 3,000 books over the last six years. He has also sponsored over 40 UK and US blog tours, during which he has given numerous radio interviews.
Justin was born in Essex, England, three days before the end of 1953 and lives with his lady in plain sight of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, England.

The Midnight of Eights charts the continuing adventures of Nelan Michael’s, a Dutch, protestant immigrant in Elizabethan England. Fleeing religious persecution following the invasion of the Netherlands by Spain, Nelan's family find refuge in London, in the suburb of Mortlake, neighbour to the famous John Dee.

In the first book, Nelan was wrongfully accused of murdering the son of an aristocrat whilst at school. This led to him becoming a blacksmith and fire breaker until he is recognised, and finally ending up in the South Americas aboard the Golden Hind with Admiral Francis Drake.

Mixing supernatural fantasy with history, The Midnight of Eights continues Nelan’s story in this second book in the Island of Angels duology.

After being employed at the end of the last book as Drake’s messenger boy, Nelan finds himself reluctantly pressed into the employ of The Queen’s Spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham after his past catches up to him once again.

However, things are not all bad as he manages to locate his lost love Eleanor and also begins to master his powers of second sight and communing with fire.

The Midnight of Eights is an enjoyable historical fantasy set in a period that I have always been fascinated by (I studied this period of history at school), so it immediately captured my imagination.

I came to this book straight from reading the first due to me being on the tour with Zooloo’s book tours so I was quite invested in what would happen next to Nelan and how he would be involved in England’s future.

It was interesting to see how Nelan progresses throughout the story and how he learns to manage the powers that he is imbued with as a child.

As mainly a fantasy buff, I don’t tend to read historical fantasy that often to be honest, but when I do, I always end up enjoying it, and it was the same with this book. I enjoyed reading about the time period that the book is set in and the characters, especially some of the historical figures and how they played a part in the story.

I must say that I enjoyed this second book more than the first, but this is not to say that there is anything wrong with the first one, it’s just that I enjoyed seeing the further development of Nelan and how he fits into the scheme of things in this second one. I also enjoyed the fantastical parts too, and again seeing how these developed throughout this second part of the story.

If you like a rollicking historical fantasy with plenty of adventure and intrigue, then this story will definitely be up your street.

The Midnight of Eights by Justin Newland is a captivating blend of historical fiction and supernatural fantasy, set against the rich tapestry of Elizabethan England. As the second installment in The Island of Angels series, the novel continues the journey of Nelan Michaels, a protagonist endowed with mystical powers known as the mark of the salamander.

The narrative commences in 1580, with Nelan returning to Plymouth after circumnavigating the globe aboard the Golden Hind. His primary quest is to master his enigmatic abilities and reunite with his beloved Eleanor. However, fate intervenes when he delivers a message to Francis Walsingham, the Queen's spymaster. Recognizing Nelan's unique astral talents, Walsingham recruits him to foresee and thwart conspiracies against the realm. This alliance becomes crucial as the Spanish Armada looms in 1588, threatening England's sovereignty. The novel delves into how a nascent navy from a modest isle could defy the world's most formidable fleet, exploring themes of destiny, divine intervention, and the convergence of extraordinary events.

I admire the author's meticulous research which shines through, painting a vivid picture of the era's political intrigue and societal dynamics. His portrayal of historical figures, such as Walsingham and Queen Elizabeth I, is both authentic and nuanced, seamlessly integrating them into a narrative enriched with supernatural elements. The author's ability to intertwine factual history with fantasy offers readers a fresh perspective on well-known events, prompting reflection on the unseen forces that might influence history.

I found the character development is particularly noteworthy. Nelan emerges as a multifaceted protagonist, grappling with personal dilemmas while bearing the weight of national duty. His internal struggles and evolution resonate, making him a relatable figure amidst the novel's fantastical aspects. Supporting characters are equally well-crafted, each contributing depth and complexity to the unfolding drama.

Overall, The Midnight of Eights is a masterfully crafted tale that challenges conventional historical narratives by infusing them with supernatural intrigue. The author provides a rich blend of history, phantasmagoria and political suspense. This book also offers a thought-provoking exploration of destiny, power, and the enigmatic forces that shape our world. This novel is a must-read for enthusiasts of historical fiction and fantasy alike, promising a journey that is as enlightening as it is enthralling.

I read both book 1 and 2 back to back so this review will consider both equally!

But I will start off by saying, had i not loved the first I would not have continued onto the second book, as I believe that reading is something we should be enjoying! Otherwise, what is the point!

My first Foray into Historical fantasy was Naomi Noviks Temeraire series, and since then I love to dive into them, for a variety of reasons. I will use those to explain my thoughts here!

First off, I absolutely LOVE the use of Historical facts and attitudes to add richness of detail and a believability element to the story. I find that the blend of old word and magic just works so well, and this story was a brilliant example. I absolutely loved how seamlessly the Author has blended history and fantasy, gorgeous descriptions and nail biting scenarios that have you glued to the page and picturing the detail to the point you feel like you have been transported.

I love that we got to see the main character growing up, maturing and learning. There was so much character development and i really enjoyed the widely varied cast throughout both books! Even when I didn’t particularly like the character, they were so engaging to read about!

I loved the twists and turns of the storyline, there were several surprises as we went and I am excited to see what happens next! This is not an author i have read before, but i will be looking at his previous books!

Midnight of Eights by Justin Newland.
I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I did enjoy this book. I had read book 1. And this starts where book 1 ended. I had to get used to the writing style. I did like Nelan. This was cleverly written. I was transported to the 1580. I liked the pace of the story, the plot, and the setting. The characters were believable. I can't wait to see what comes next. I would recommend this book.

Or was it an entirely different intervention – the extraordinary conjunction of coincidences that Nelan’s astral powers brought to bear on that fateful Midnight of Eights.

"I hear the ringing of the bells.
I hear the words of the prayers of the Almighty.
I see the light of the blazing fire."
.
Set in the backdrop of the 16th century, near London, England, exists a life of magical realm and supernatural power. Book 2 in the series named Island of Angels, it continues with Nelan's (the protagonist) journey of exploring and acquiring his powers and ultimately finding his lost love Eleanor. Eventually he is being hired into the Queen's spymaster for his special abilities. And thus, begins his adventurous and challenging journey which seems worth reading.
.
I haven't read the prequel, yet I chose to jump directly into this book. The first 100 pages seem too chaotic for me with multiple characters, their narratives, and the background. This also includes Part 1 out of the three. The longing of Nelan for his beloved Eleanor was something beyond words. I was mostly engrossed and loved reading their part, whatever little they shared.
The theme of the historical fantasy has been justified well.
Apart from all the goodies, I felt that the book could do a lot better in engaging the readers with its narration. The background could've been more descriptive so that I can visualize it better and relate it with the characters.
.
The inclusion of time in chronology, a non native language, and the short chapters made it somehow a compelling read.

Justin Newland, if you ask me, is one of the best authors who creates novels that are fantasy and interwoven with history.
I have read every novel he has written, and I am obsessed with his stories. The Midnight of Eights is the second book in The Island of Angel's duology.  The first, The Mark of the Salamander, introduces us to Nelan. He has just arrived back on the Golden Hind and finds himself recruited as the Queen's spy.
What a read! I adored reading this novel. As always, Justin Newland had me in the palm of his hand. His ability for recreating times gone by but with his unique twists, is excellent. His characters are developed, so I feel like I was returning to a friend with Nelan.
I finished this way too soon, and now I have to wait for Justin to publish another amazing read!
Thanks to the author and ZooLoo's Book Tours for my gifted copy of the book.

I was lucky enough to read The Mark of The Salamander last year and I really enjoyed it. Being a bit of an English Renaissance and fantasy geek it was right up my street. Needless to say Newland does it again with a fantastic foray into historical fiction. I have come to really like Nelan and their interactions with historical figures of the past. There is a great mix of action and intrigue in this book, particularly since Nelan is called to the service of Elizabeth I’s Spymaster.

Once again what really stands out is how Newland manages to blend historical facts with a touch of fantasy to make a wonderful and captivating read. From the moment you start the novel you are transported to Nelan’s (and the other characters of course) side. If you are a fan of historical fiction you will love this but I think even if you aren’t or have little to no interest in the time period you will still find the story engaging and entertaining. Newland does a wonderful job of keeping the reader in the loop, so if you don’t need to know all the history to enjoy this one.

I cannot wait for more in this series.

As always thank you to Zooloo’s Book Tours for the copy to review, my reviews are always honest and freely given.

This is the second book in The Island of Angels Series written by the author, Justin Newland. We return to our MMC named Nelan, who reaches Plymouth after a round the world trip on his previous ship from the first book. Nelan has powers now and as we recall the Mark of the Salamander (hence the name of the first book). He is trying to learn how to use them. He also wants to get home to Eleanor.

The book opens with Nelan visiting his fathers grave after a long absence. There is a vision that appears to him in the graveyard due to his powers and it freaks him out a little. The rest of the story is about Nelan looking desperately for Eleanor so they can be married. Nelan also gets employed by a new ship and with a new mission to help with his special abilities. The author did a great job writing this book with historical accuracy in dates and also researching how the people would speak, etc.

I love this series and am looking forward to the next book in the series soon!

Having enjoyed the previous book (Mark of the Salamander) I was glad to be back with Nelan on his adventures. This time he finds himself working for Francis Walsingham during the Spanish Armada. I loved the historical links but also the sense of adventure this book gave. I still find it baffling how the armada itself played out and this was the perfect backdrop for this story. Another great book from Justin Newland to continue the series!

This is the second book in The Island of Angels duology and having read book 1 - The Mark Of The Salamander - this time last year, I've been eagerly awaiting the conclusion to Nelan's story.

After Nelan sailed away with the Golden Hind in the previous book, we now see the great ship return and Nelan recruited into the service of the Queen's Spymaster, where he hones his skills and helps to avoid any plots against the country.

Having met our main characters before, it was great to watch the development through this book and see how the dynamics played out in the different settings and situations.

I found the storyline completely mesmerising as ever. This is my fourth read by this author and every time, I'm shocked at how much I become engrossed in the books.

I've never been a huge history fan - but following these historical based reads has proven to me that it's definitely just the "teacher" and the way things are told that holds all the power.
I had a very small knowledge of the times of the Spanish Armada (from my children learning about it) and following this storyline here with the fantasy based storyline woven in, was completely fascinating.
I learned more here than I ever did at school! And loved it!

The characters in Newland's books jump right off the page and you can't help but get swept away in their amazing adventures and trials in life.

I have no clue what to expect from this author next, but I will definitely be looking out for more and can't wait to see which period in history I'm going to rediscover a love for!

Nelan leaves the Golden Hind and happily marries his beloved Eleanor, but still yearns to master his mystical skills of the mark of the salamander. But then he is forced to spy for none other than Francis Walsingham, the Queen’s spymaster. After his mentor Dr John Dee leaves the country in haste, Nelan is compelled to walk a wary path. His visions become crucial to the battle against the Spanish Armada who seek to conquer England.
The skill of the writing drew me completely into 16th century and I felt like I was standing next to Nelan, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the 1580’s. There are old friends from his time on the Golden Hind, and others, both friend and foe who have treachery in their hearts and minds. I raced through the battles as I fought with the men to protect the Island of Angels. And as Nelan’s skills developed, so I was fascinated by the Midnight of Eights.
Different races and beliefs are skilfully portrayed, only enhancing my reading pleasure. By creating a story based on history and blended seamlessly with the other-worldly, Justin Newland has written a tale which is enthralling and impossible to put down.
Although The Midnight of Eights can be read as a stand-alone, to discover how Nelan’s journey began I would highly recommend reading The Mark of the Salamander first. A book which I loved as I lived the action, drama and romance of the seas, sailing around the world with Nelan and Sir Francis Drake.

Having read the first book in this 2-book series, The Mark of the Salamander, I was keen to see how Nelan Michaels’ journey continues.

Nelan has landed after a lengthy journey on The Golden Hind with Francis Drake. Paid handsomely for services rendered in exploring the New World, Nelan returns to London to find his love, Eleanor. All he wants now is marry her and settle down.

He previously fled after having been accused of murder, of which he was innocent, and he feels confident with the written pardon by Drake.

Sent to Queen Elizabeth I's spy master, Walsingham, with an important message from Drake, Nelan expects to be sent on his way afterwards, but the wily Walsingham has other plans for him when he hears about Nelan's latest vision, which reveals a Papist traitor. The lord blackmails him into service, and Nelan has no choice other to become the spy master's eyes and ears, seeking out Catholics amongst the population.

Frustrated that he's unable to find Eleanor – a secret message she left him was undecipherable – he tries to retrace her steps. Thereby, he receives help from a group of Gyptians.

Will Nelan find Eleanor for a happy-ever-after in the English countryside? Or are darker forces at work, trying to destroy their lives? What is the Midnight of Eights? And just how does he manage to influence the approaching threat of the Spanish Armada? Well, read the novel – and you'll be surprised!

The Midnight of Eights is a riveting Tudor adventure, looking deep into the dark shadows of everyday life in the reign of Elizabeth I. As with Elizabeth's predecessors, religious differences lead to secret plots, involving not only the troubled Mary Stuart, the queen's cousin, incarcerated until her execution in 1587, but also prominent members of the English nobility.

No one is safe from accusations, and life becomes precarious, as Nelan finds out in the course of the story, when danger arrives too close to home. Nelan's gift is much sought-after, and his accusation of murder hangs over him all the time, like a noose.

He must do Walsingham's bidding, or risk certain death.

Ambitions, jealousy, and religious and personal rivalries ensure that the story moves along at a thrilling pace. We sense Nelan's continuing frustration, and he is aware of the danger that follows him.

Nelan is a likeable character with the a special gift of vision. This makes him the prime target of powerful men, and as he grows into his own, he becomes more and more aware of the fact that those men will stop at nothing; not even fabricated accusations that endanger those close to him.

Machiavellian Walsingham was cleverly portrayed, I thought. A ruthless politician, his ambitions know no limits. (Geoffrey Rush's great performance in Elizabeth the movie springs to mind.) He doesn't shy away from using blackmail, false accusations, and even murder, to get what he wants.

The Midnight of Eights is a chilling reminder of what life under the Tudor queens and kings was really like, away from the fancy portrayal of life at court and the much-touted discoveries of new lands with untold riches.

The population was under constant observation; religious dissent was rife in the underground, leading to secret plots against enemies and monarchs alike; personal ambitions and betrayal by the nobility; and the fear of the population of defamation and often made-up accusations that could take anyone to the scaffold. The novel shows up this dark side extremely well.

You should read The Mark of the Salamander first, in order to understand Nelan's full journey. Whilst the author drops details of his past regularly in the second book, I would recommend to read both novels in sequence. Then you will be able to enjoy The Midnight of Eights even more.

Highly recommended.

The Midnight of Eights by Justin Newland is a historical novel set in the late 1500s and the second book in The Island of Angels series. First off, I have to mention the book cover — it’s absolutely stunning! The design is so atmospheric, with rich images and colours that really pop. It’s emotive and completely drew me in.
From the very beginning, it felt like I was reconnecting with old friends. Familiar names and places sprang back to life, which was a treat since I’ve read the first book, The Mark of the Salamander. That said, you don’t need to have read it to enjoy this one, but I do think it adds a little extra depth if you have.
I absolutely adore Newland’s writing style. It flows so naturally, even though the story is set in such a different time period. The little excerpts of astrology woven into the narrative add a fascinating layer of authenticity and bring the 1500s to life in a unique way. It’s clear he’s done his research, and it’s such a joy to read.
One thing I really appreciated was the structure. The chapters are fairly short, which is perfect for someone like me who likes to read in little bursts but hates stopping midway through a chapter. And can we talk about the chapter titles? They’re brilliant. Each one gives a little hint of what’s to come and raises the profile of the chapter itself. It’s a small touch, but it made the experience even more enjoyable.
As a fan of historical fiction, this book was right up my street. The story, the characters, and the way it’s all tied to its time period make it a fascinating and entertaining read. Newland has a real talent for bringing history to life.
In conclusion, The Midnight of Eights is a captivating and beautifully written novel. It’s perfect for anyone who loves historical fiction, especially if you’re intrigued by astrology and the Renaissance era. Whether you’re new to the series or already a fan, this book is sure to delight. I’m already looking forward to what Justin Newland has in store for us next!

Justin Newland’s The Midnight of Eights is a captivating historical fantasy that seamlessly blends real-world history with supernatural intrigue. Set in Elizabethan England, the novel follows Nelan Michaels, a young man seeking justice and redemption after being falsely accused of a crime. His journey intersects with key historical figures like Sir Francis Walsingham and Admiral Francis Drake, all while navigating the dangers of Spanish espionage and Catholic conspiracies.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its richly detailed portrayal of 16th-century England. Newland’s meticulous research brings the era to life, from the intricate power struggles within Queen Elizabeth’s court to the hardships faced by commoners. The immersive setting makes readers feel as though they are walking the damp streets of London or standing before England’s most influential figures.

But this is more than just a historical novel—it brims with mysticism and prophecy. Nelan’s connection to fire, symbolized by the salamander, hints at his extraordinary abilities. His visions and supernatural experiences add a compelling layer to the narrative, elevating him beyond an ordinary man caught in extraordinary events. One particularly striking passage captures this beautifully:

"By the warm, I’ll be sworn."

These cryptic words, spoken by the flames, reflect Nelan’s deeper connection to forces beyond the physical world. The novel’s pacing is expertly balanced, weaving intense action—secret messages, betrayals, and life-threatening encounters—with introspective moments exploring faith, identity, and destiny.

The Midnight of Eights is a must-read for fans of historical fiction infused with the mystical. Newland masterfully intertwines fact and fantasy, crafting a tale that is both thought-provoking and exhilarating. Whether you’re drawn to historical intrigue, supernatural elements, or themes of redemption, this novel delivers on every level. Highly recommended!

⏭️ A book that has every genre in it ?

♦️ The Midnight of Eights by Justin Newland is mixed of all in one rollercoaster ride.

" By the warm
I'll be sworn "

♦️ I choose this book because of its history and supernatural elements I found in the blurb, but other emotions came as surprising to me when reading this book.

♦️ The book revolves around Nelan, a young man seeking help and justice after Walshingham accused him of something he never did.

♦️ All his goals were to find his true love, Eleanor, and have a happy life with her.

♦️ But as he went to find her, she had disappeared and, at the same time, he was bound to work for Walshingham as a spy as he didn't have any other option.

♦️ Among all Catholic dangers, his journey was a mix of supernatural, adventurous and what not ?

♦️ The build-up of Elizabeth's time, the time of history in the book, was amazing to read. It was so on point that you can imagine that time in front of your eyes.

♦️ The book's opening was a bit confusing for me, so I was not able to connect immediately.

♦️ Nelan's character was executed to perfection by the author as a brave, unstoppable, a combination of many powers at its best.

♦️ I am not a fan of fantasy, so in between the chapters, I was sure that the fantasy element in the book would bore me, but that was not the case.

♦️ The chapter about Gyptians was new and my favorite of all - something I found fascinating about the book apart from the main characters.

♦️ The writing in the POV of some characters was difficult to accept. Maybe the accident was difficult, otherwise it was impactful.

♦️ Overall, a great combination of fantasy, history, and supernatural all together !

“The Midnight of Eights” is a thrilling blend of history, espionage, and the supernatural. Set in the late 1500s, it follows Nelan Michaels, a sailor returning to England after an adventurous journey on the Golden Hind. But his life takes an unexpected turn when he is drawn into the dangerous world of Queen Elizabeth I’s spymaster, Francis Walsingham.

Nelan is no ordinary man—he possesses mystical abilities linked to fire, known as the mark of the salamander. These powers allow him to foresee and influence events, making him a valuable asset in the fight to protect England. As tensions rise and the mighty Spanish Armada prepares to invade, Nelan’s abilities may hold the key to England’s survival.

The book masterfully weaves real historical events with elements of magic and intrigue. The writing is vivid, making the reader feel the tension of looming war, the urgency of secret missions, and the awe of Nelan’s supernatural gifts. The question of divine intervention versus human action adds a layer of mystery that keeps you engaged until the very end.

“For now, we prepare for this new epoch and its rules.”
“What are they?”
“There are three, like the three wavy lines on my palm, the mark of the salamander:
Work it out for yourself.
Find those of kind.
Be surprised at nothing.”

For those who enjoy historical fiction with a twist of the mystical, “The Midnight of Eights” is a captivating read. It offers a fresh perspective on a well-known historical event while delivering action, suspense, and a touch of the extraordinary.

Set against the backdrop of England mainly, as Nelan serves the queen, he weaves a tapestry of future realms and awaiting mysteries. Each chapter in the storyline stands as a testament to the elements of electrifying events and mind-blowing mysteries. Nelan not only navigates the realms, but also the fire within him. Justin Newland balances his storyline with the overview of prediction and anticipation, his masterful storytelling shines through the pages of this unforgettable novel. Readers are invited to embark on a journey of self-discovery and faith through a strong protagonist, Nelan. One of my favourite chapters is The Joy of Homecoming. It provides an essence of warmth and connection to the plot. Nelan conveys yet another heart-warming piece to his beloved with an assurance of happy ending. His hopeful tone resonates with the readers. The story terminates with a memorable ending where Nelan reunites with his beloved, and they together set for a fresh journey with the slamander ruby.

A fascinating historical fantasy, The Midnight of Eights skillfully combines historical events with otherworldly intrigue. The tale, which is set in Elizabethan England, centers on Nelan Michaels, a young man who possesses supernatural abilities known as the "mark of the salamander." He comes to Plymouth in 1580 after traveling the world with Francis Drake in an attempt to control his abilities and get back together with Eleanor, his love. However, when he is enlisted by Francis Walsingham, the Queen's spymaster, destiny has other ideas. Nelan's special skills are vital to England's struggle for survival as the Spanish Armada approaches.

Elizabethan politics, espionage, and naval combat are vividly brought to life by Justin Newland's painstaking research. His depictions of historical personalities such as Queen Elizabeth I and Walsingham lend credibility, while the supernatural aspects offer a new interpretation of actual events. Nelan is a gripping protagonist because of his internal conflict between his own ambitions and his sense of national obligation.

It is inspiring to see how Nelan Michaels went from being an outsider to being a significant figure in history. "I will be sworn by the warm." The rich historical texture and immersion of the novel are encapsulated in this sentence.

Readers interested in political intrigue and historical fantasy should not miss this book.

'The Midnight of Eights' is the second book in the 'The Island of Angels' series and a direct sequel to the first book ‘The Mark of the Salamander’ carrying forward the story of Nelan Michaels.

While the first book introduces you to Nelan Michaels, a Dutch, protestant immigrant from Spain, in Elizabethan England. After being wrongly accused of murder, Nelan becomes a blacksmith and fire breaker, finally ending up in the South Americas aboard the Golden Hind with Admiral Francis Drake. The story continues in the second book as Nelan finds himself employed with Queen’s Spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham. Having discovered his new powers and trying to use them, Nelan is eager to find his lost love Eleanor and also master his new powers.

The story is a nice blend of historical fiction and fantasy making it a captivating read from the start. Nelan's adventures are engaging and the addition of magical elements makes it more interesting. Author's historical research is top notch and the evocative writing and world building brings the Victorian era to life.

The characters are well crafted especially Nelan, who not only deals with his new powers but also personal challenges. The supporting cast is good too, adding depth to the story. The writing is excellent and the narrative is free flowing.

Overall, The Midnight of Eights is an engrossing read and fitting end to the duology.

Justin Newland’s "The Midnight of Eights" is a spellbinding historical novel that seamlessly blends espionage, mysticism, and destiny. Set in Elizabethan England, it follows Nelan Michaels, a young man marked by the salamander, a mysterious spirit of fire. Returning from a voyage with Francis Drake, Nelan hopes to reunite with his love, Eleanor, but is instead drawn into the web of Sir Francis Walsingham, the Queen’s spymaster. As the Spanish threat looms, his astral visions and deep connection to fire become weapons in a battle far greater than he imagined.

The author masterfully evokes the era’s political turmoil and shadowy intrigues, bringing to life figures like Walsingham and Drake while weaving in elements of prophecy and the supernatural. The novel’s rich descriptions and lyrical prose make even the simplest moments resonate, as when Nelan, attuned to his gift, realizes: “By the warm, I’ll be sworn.” The imagery of fire recurs throughout, symbolizing both destruction and enlightenment.

Beyond the historical and mystical elements, this is a story of fate and free will. Nelan’s struggle against forces beyond his control adds emotional depth, making his journey gripping and poignant.

A beautifully written and deeply immersive novel, The Midnight of Eights is perfect for those who love history laced with magic and intrigue.

Reading should be fun, this book definitely made the experience enjoyable.

The way historical details are blended with magical elements is truly impressive. The author has done a great job of making the world feel real. The combination of historical settings, beliefs, and events with a touch of magic makes the story even more engaging. The descriptions are so vivid that it feels like you are inside the story, watching everything unfold.

The characters are well-developed, and it was great to see how the main character changed over time. He grows, learns, and matures, which makes his journey even more interesting. The other characters also bring a lot to the story. Even when I didn’t like a particular character, they were still fascinating to read about.

The plot is full of unexpected moments. There are twists and surprises that keep the story exciting. Just when you think you know what will happen, something unexpected takes place. This kept me hooked until the very end.

I had never read anything from this author before, but after reading these books, I will definitely check out more of their work. The writing is captivating, the world-building is rich, and the characters feel real. I’m eagerly waiting to see what happens next in this series!

I'm reviewing this as part of a tour with Hygge Book Tours.

This is the second book in the Island of Angels series, and the second book featuring Nelan Michaels as the protagonist. Prior to this, I read the first book, in which he sailed on The Golden Hind, so I was keen to find out what happened next for him. When I started reading, it felt a little bit like being reunited with an old friend. I enjoyed the atmosphere, as I followed Nelan on his next adventure.

There was something about the storytelling that made me feel I actually connected a little bit more deeply with Nelan than the first time around. In the first book, I felt as though I was still getting to know him, but this time around, I felt more attached to him, and found parts of the book a little emotional to read.

If you are a reader of historical fiction, I would recommend this book, as well as the first.

Thank you to Hygge Book Tours, and to the author and publisher, for the opportunity to read and review this.

Justin Newland weaves history with a touch of the mystical in The Midnight of Eights. The story begins with Nelan Michaels, freshly returned from sailing around the world with The Golden Hind. His desire is simple, to understand the strange powers of the salamander’s mark and to be reunited with Eleanor. But fate, and Francis Walsingham, draw him into the shadowy world of espionage at the heart of Elizabethan England. What follows is both a tale of loyalty to crown and a journey through the unseen forces that shape nations.

How fluidly the author blends fact and imagination is just commendable. The Armada is a moment everyone knows from history books, yet here it takes on a new depth, as though the past were alive and unfolding again.

The language is rich. The story respects the history it leans on. The author builds tension carefully. The style is clear and contemplative. This book feels like a window into another world, where fact and imagination are inseparable. The author balances the supernatural with the historical immaculately. I absolutely enjoyed reading it.

The Mignight of Eights is book two in the Island of Angels series, and having read book one (The Mark of the Salamander ), I had high expectations for this read, and let me tell you, it certainly did not disappoint.

I'm a huge historical fiction fan ( one of my favourite genres ), so this was right up my street.

Picking up from the previous book, the Golden Hind returns, with Nelan being recruited by the Queen's Spymaster and him now protecting the country against scheming and plots.

Against a backdrop of Spanish armada threatening England’s shores,.combined with the fantasy element to this tale ( another of my favourite genres) I delved right into this story, and read it in two sittings.

So overall, this was a very enjoyable read, and again, the author has done a great job in weaving an exciting, fast paced tale, full of interesting, well fleshed out, believable characters.

I look forward to the next read by this author.

4 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

I really enjoyed The Midnight of Eights. I loved how it picked up with Nelan and we followed him on his journey again. I love how history is wrapped up within the story with Nelan's supernatural (if that's the right word) abilities.
I always find the writing of these books (I previously read book one) immensely satisfying, I love how in-depth they are and how I get immersed into the story feeling like I'm there alongside our characters.
The characters all have a part to play and these just like the world building are created with a realism to them that brings the novel to life. The writing tells us everything we need to know to transport us into the story and I really enjoyed getting swept away on this journey again.

Let me start by asking, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS BOOK'S COVER? It’s beyond gorgeous.

I’d say that a book with a cover like this makes a perfect gift – so, if you happen to have a historical fiction book lover in your life, remember this book when you need a gift for them.
This book is set in 1500ies. From what I have read about that time period, the book feels like it might be touching something authentic about that time. It feels like the author has done his own research into history, and it seems like he has done a good job. And then, there is a nice layer of fantasy. The characters come alive, and the story flows effortlessly.

Also, did I mention SHORT CHAPTERS? There are short chapters. It’s a breeze to fly through them.

This story pulls you in from the first page. Nelan Michaels’ return to England, armed with mystical salamander born powers, sets the stage for a thrilling mix of espionage, danger, and supernatural intrigue. Watching him step into Francis Walsingham’s world of secrets adds a gripping layer to the historical backdrop.

The tension builds beautifully as the Spanish Armada looms, and the blend of real history with magical elements feels seamless and exciting. The question of divine intervention versus hidden forces keeps you turning the pages. A captivating, imaginative reimagining of 1588 that fans of historical fantasy will absolutely love.

This was a fun book. I didn’t expect the mix of history and mysticism to work so well, but it did. I found myself believing in the mark of the salamander, in the idea that fire could live inside someone and guide their fate. The stakes were huge, and I kept wondering how this small island could possibly stand a chance. I felt the weight of Nelan’s choices, the danger of his mission, and the eerie beauty of the visions. The question of divine intervention stayed with me and made me think.

This book is so exciting and rich in great characters and history.

It's a story of fiction, but set against the background of history and I think the author did a great job providing accurate detail to support that.

Filled with mystery and intrigue, it had great characters that we were eager to follow and learn more about while joining them in the middle of the action.

Very entertaining from start to finish. Definitely worth your time.
