TOTALLY EARTHBOUND AND PRESENT DAY
THE COOL THING is a storm of monsters, madness— and love. A shifty couple steal from a buried UFO. They're snatched into a lab of terrifying human/alien experiments. She's scheduled for an implant. He's lost and blundering. Escape is up to her. Life is such a pain... so is dying.
"fun, irreverent, and scary" * "this story will blow you away" * "ribald, and frequently hilarious"

SYNOPSIS: (a much mouthier, self indulgent version of the above)
A perpetually drunken junk dealer is offered an item he thinks is medieval. He’s off by a couple light-years; it’s part of an ET spacesuit. If activated, it will nullify distance, opening a walk-through portal into a long ago crashed spaceship, and the human staffed laboratory built above. Without getting paid, seller Carl vanishes, leaving the device sitting in a vaporous haze. Even more baffling to the inebriate junker, overnight, his eternally disagreeable wife becomes deliriously happy, attentive, and insistently… available. Before anything else terrifying can happen, he dump-sells the object to R.L., who takes it home.
Having rubber band ethics, an antiques shop, and slightly reformed street girl Deena, as paramour, RL should be just peachy. BUT, he’s fallen F-faced in love with her, and she plays him like a money wheezing accordion. This is a man burdened with an innate love of valuable crap, animals… and wayward women. He’s also a congenital liar with an all-consuming itch for too much money. All these fountains of joy are constant aggravations to his neighbor, Jayderay; a man-cursed black woman who is about to liquidate some vintage treasures in a Shirley Jackson-esque eerie mansion. RL wants those contents, not knowing the house is linked to the thing he’s bought, the spaceship lab… and horrors beyond imagining.
When RL runs an errand, Deena disappears. No one is there to hear her scream. Returning, he thinks the girl is playfully hiding, and takes the device to his shop. While there, it’s stolen. Of course it is, life being such a cesspool.
Stalked by a starving, nightmarish Lab Spill, Deena runs into Carl. Both have been snatched into an immense, beguiling playground. A carnival like area that’s home to Proby; a dubiously successful 1956 splicing experiment. (if Elvis had humped a Gecko…) Obviously not human, but pathetically thinking he is, Proby is the lonely, decades old, pet teen of Dr. Lillith Gaust. This nightmare scientist, riddled with time-treatments, boiling insanity, and blood from another world, has kept him intermittently alive out of boredom: freezing or thawing on whims. When the spacesuit piece, lost and inoperative for years, began opening the ship’s portal, Proby had yanked the boy and girl into the ship. Dr. Gaust has an urgent, ghastly use for Deena.
Being very, very practical, Deena latches onto Carl, who is brainlessly intoxicated with her. The two become Proby’s, 50’s style, teenage gang, his friends. The creature desperately needs and cares for them; they make him human.
Jayderay, conducting business, spots the stolen spacesuit part. Thinking it and Deena are at the home of a legally untouchable predator, she calls RL. And off he charges, the wrong way. Blocked by inconsiderately dying customers, scheming spiders, interfering cops, and just generally being penetrated by Life’s Wiener, he flails on in vain. Sick with worry, he turns to a God he has despised since his abomination of a childhood. A childhood that he ended… with murder. For the first time since then, he prays, asking with clenched fists and gritted teeth for help. Knowing from bitter experience that God wouldn’t spit on him without payment, RL offers it. He’ll be sorry.
Deena realizes RL can’t possibly find her; she’s on her own. And the doctor, bringing a bestial creation, is coming for her.

Robert Rife loves dark comedy, science fiction and horror. The more twisted, strange, irreverent, and weird it is... the better. Just like he is. And he thrived for years in the same legalized thievery as his ethics bereft protagonist. Plus, having been married and divorced twice, he’s been told tons about being NOT human. Yes, tons... he could write a book. This scribbling reptile is a great dad, failed husband, and all-around horse's butt. He lives on an island off the coast of Washington. Under a rock. Only Santa and large women of dubious character are allowed to visit. Santa often skips.

It is total mayhem and madness. I love black humour and that is what this book has. It is one crazy and unique story. Even though it is one book there is a story for each character that pulls the overall story together. I laughed, I cringed, I gasped, I shook my head but, in the end, I really enjoyed it.

It is a horror, sci fi, suspense story and a buffet of everything in between that will have you completely enthralled. I really enjoyed Robert's sense of humour and look forward to reading more. This fast-paced tale is certainly different and has lots of action and adventure.

I am not going to give anything away as you need to read it yourself to fully appreciate it.

Look, it had it's moment's, but I found this ridiculously silly and often hard to follow.
Some of the sentence structure and language used tried to be clever to the point of actually making it hard to follow.
I just found this silly, disjointed and not for me.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It goes back and forth between crazy funny and way scary. It's got a really dark sense of humor, and the concept of the breastplate/extender is terrific, and so are the Waydowns, the Lab Spills, and the buried UFO with a laboratory inside. There's also a lab created part human who thinks he's ELVIS in the 50s, and he falls in love with a girl who's been kidnapped for a horrible experiment... and then... okay, I'll stop before I spoil this for other readers. I read this book two times, and I really hope it becomes a series. Loved the characters.

This was one of those titles that came up as "selected for you based on your past reading". Not really sure what algorithms they were using! Anyways, it sounded kind of fun and different and boy, is it! This is a bawdy and slightly vulgar, southern Gothic sci-fi suspense story with some very damaged characters colliding across several universes. Not everything gets tied up in the end, plot-wise and it looks like there is a sequel but this worked as a stand alone story. Hard to explain the plot, but it is crazy. Lots of folks get their hides shellacked, most of them deserving, but not all. Lots of wounded characters, some of their own making, but not all. Tag line is "A dark comedy. Or not." It was pretty funny, over all, and a fast read, and some interesting scenes in some interesting dimensions. Not all your questions will get answered!

The Cool Thing by Robert Rife is a bit of a madcap fantasy, with plenty of dark humour, adventure, action, danger, suspense, emotion, drama, surprising developments, imagination, all while packing loads of originality. This is the first book that I have read by Mr. Rife, and if this story is anything to go by, it certainly won’t be my last.
It reminded me a bit of Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett’s stories. A zany, comical, madcap fantasy that sweeps you up in all the action, shakes you up a bit, and doesn’t let you go until you have read every crazy, cool word.
Well worth the read!

Thank you, Robert Rife!

Even being inside a wrecked UFO can’t keep a good scrotum down.

This may have been without fear of contradiction the most bizarre book I've ever read. Ever. And I remember the 60's AND the 70's vividly and without the need for memory-enhancing pharmaceuticals! Yes, this is indeed a character-driven - all of whom were as bizarre as the plot - insanely imagined jaunt through gods know what. Seriously, if you were to ask me to summarize Robert Rife's "THE COOL THING. A Dark Comedy. Or Not." (that's how it's listed btw), I'd have to throw up my hands and declare a hard pass. You may give it 5 stars, you may give it 1. Heck, it may even be responsible for a lot of the weird religious stuff out there these days, it's that mind-bogglingly weird!

Tanya pulls her fishtail braid, frowning. Enjoying her own sourness like a lemon-soaked tampon.

Rife's work did offer a rich and quite colorful vocabulary at times, definitely proving to be more than, um, direct and expressive in parts. However, looking at it through the same lens, I can't say that it offered a particularly smooth-reading experience - I'm not even sure if some of what I witnessed counted as tense errors, plot holes or even randomly abused and utterly violated punctuation. Still, for all its gloriously beautiful bits set against obvious blemishes, I found that I simply couldn't look away. Call it the literary version of rubbernecking, with body parts, sentence fragments and more strewn all over the road! In fact and in all honesty (a no doubt redundant and even repeated impression), this book filled and even superceded my own daily existence from the moment I started reading. I only put my e-copy down for what I initially claimed was an indigestion-fueled night of nightmares. However, upon reflection, I'm not above blaming Rife for my lost 8 hours of peaceful slumber.

She’s short, scrawny and self taught in fashion, the type of woman whose eyes are as hard and dry as her vagina.

Our adventure begins in fact even before the actual book begins. A mad collection of reviews, including one by the author himself (noting that he believes Stephen King, Mark Twain and Charles Dickens either are or would be jealous of his efforts) is followed by an odd assortment of proclamations and even a table of contents that's worth perusing before you find yourself irretrievably lost in the story. What follows is then a hodge-podge of settings and events that includes haunted houses (maybe), questionable business dealings (definitely), an abandoned UFO (no, really) and an often weird examination of the "most stupidest creatures to ever live", namely, the male of our species. In other words, good fun for the whole family especially with the holidays approaching.

Any Dracula worth half a fang would be sexually aroused climbing this eerie, spider webbed staircase. By the time the second floor was reached, he’d be ejaculating spurts of dust.

I really don't know what else to say. And for those of you who know how verbose my reviews tend to be, that's (not) saying something! This is not a funny "ha ha" book though there are some bits that are funny "ha ha we really shouldn't be laughing at this, should we? Oh gods I can't stop!" included. It definitely shouldn't be compared in my humble onion (sic) to any books that have made you guffaw, giggle or otherwise shoot any assortment of liquids out of your nose. It is definitely, quote/unquote, something else and quite frankly, I think it would fit better on the shelves alongside Kafka's works than be put on your… scifi shelf? Um, yeah, let's go with that.

Monster? What monster? Why care? Let’s grab Wendy’s ankle and we will honeymoon in Never-Land. Wheee!

All kidding aside (HA!), you should try if for no other reason than to eventually return here and explain it to me. It might help if I read the next book, too, but my therapy session isn't yet for several weeks so I'm going to wait, you know, just to recover. Pharmaceuticals WILL be involved. But you hip cats enjoy, you dig? Purple Elvis has now left the building…

There are people out there who will do anything to make a quick buck and there are those out there who fall prey to these people, but when one shifty couple plunder a UFO and try to sell the pilfered items, they are found out and get into more trouble than they expected and now they have to work out how to escape from the predicament they find themselves in.

It all starts with a filthy man, moves to a drunken man in a loveless marriage working in a shop with questionable morals and motives, through to someone who charms their way into selling wares of questionable value to those who are easy to fleece. From here, an old house is discovered which is ripe for rumours and riches, but is it really worth the hassle associated with gaining access to the contents within?

With aliens, monsters, madness and love all taking turns to twist and manoeuvre pieces into place, so that devious experiments can be carried out, but is there any escape from probably pain and possible death, when you are a terrified female, paired with a blundering fool? This is a story told through the eyes of many different people, some are loveable and some are not, but the overarching theme of this comedic horror will keep you keep you reading and likely giggling until the end.

THE COOL THING: A DARK COMEDY. OR NOT. by Robert Rife is one of those delightfully bizarre novels that dares you to keep reading. From page one, it hurtles you into a world filled with oddball characters, unlikely twists, and a comedic brand of mischief that somehow weaves in sci-fi elements. Think “Elvis meets interplanetary strangeness.” It’s equal parts weird, witty, and utterly entertaining.
What truly sold me is the author’s knack for mixing a splash of slapstick humour with darker undercurrents—yet never veering so far as to lose the fun. The plot zips along with plenty of snappy dialogue and absurd scenarios that had me both cringing and giggling. If you’re looking for a safe, predictable read, this probably isn’t it. But if you fancy a no-holds-barred comedic romp that dabbles in the outrageous, The Cool Thing ticks all the right boxes.
In short, it’s a refreshingly off-kilter adventure full of surprising moments, clever banter, and, yes, a rather crazy ride from start to finish. If you don’t mind a dash of eccentricity in your dark comedy, you’ll find this book absolutely brilliant.

THE COOL THING: A DARK COMEDY. OR NOT. is the first book in THE COOL THING SERIES. It’s a satisfyingly weird book that takes the kind of yuckier, messier parts of humanity and gives them a good shake up with some truly wacky sci-fi elements.
I’m always a fan of a detailed book that really captures my imagination, and this definitely did that. Somehow, the level of grossness at times made it even more vivid and tangible for me, and I was really drawn in. Like, we see former sporting hero Carl trying to salvage a pack of cigarettes that had an unfortunate encounter with a bottle of beer. I’m pretty sure I could smell and taste them as I was reading.
I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re looking for loveable characters. But you’ll certainly find interesting characters here! Readers may find some of the content offensive or upsetting, and this is definitely not a book for younger readers.
This book gets five stars from me. I was totally engrossed, and really enjoyed it! It has me looking for the weird and magical in the everyday, which is wonderful!

What would you do if you came across a UFO that makes you feel a little weird and gives off a funny smell? I have never read a book like The Cool Thing before! This was full of things your wildest imagination couldn’t even think of. It took me quite a bit to get into it as the first few chapters are very short and seemingly disconnected, but once I got a feel for the flow it was mind-blowing. Full of monsters, quirky sci-fi events, and even love, I was not sufficiently prepared to soak all of this in on the first read. I fully intend to read it again before I pick-up the next book in this jaw-dropping series!

If you keep an open mind when you begin reading this, it won’t take long for you to be absorbed in Robert Rife’s incredible storytelling abilities. Give it a chance and you’ll come out the other side with a marvelous yet dark picture of what is going on with all of these characters.

Quirky, Funny, Dark and Edgy Rollercoaster of a Read

Quirky characters abound in this wild read. There’s RL and Jayderay, as well as well a
The story is funny and edgy as the premise is comical. A hapless couple find an object buried in the dirt and think they can sell it and make some quick money. Of course the object is not what they think it is and the comedy ensues.
The author’s use of simile is at first clever, but the similes can get a little bit annoying. That doesn’t take away from the story. There’s a lot to enjoy.
The hard part of the story is the oppressive nature of the story. Wished for a little more hope here. That’s just me.
Overall, the story is a true rollercoaster of a read. There are moments when the story is silly. There are also moments when it is goofy and funny and original. I particularly enjoyed the RL development. Deena Lynn is interesting. Fun read but not a read for everyone.

This book was packed with things! Literally! From chaos to humor, it had it all. I could not put it down, from everything happening I was very mystified and holding on for dear life! The writing was sensational, and the author made a great visual story with everything come to life!

I loved this book. UFO’s and bad people, and the good guys of course. I value this book because I laughed and bit my nails as I read. I was very invested as I read. A lot, and I mean a lot, of stuff happens. Some good things and some bad things, to certain people I will say. The book gave us a lot, and in return just wanted our interest. The book was visually, I felt I was right there in the lab. The lab certainly held many unique Characters I will say!

Fantastic read and writing! Loved it from start to finish!

This is a really unique book. It has a mixture of everything from sci-fi to romance and even a little horror as well. The author separates the chapters so that each one is from the perspective of a different character in our story. This was nice as if felt like different stories inside one book.
I liked the humour in this book. It's quite dark but didn't stop me from laughing at different parts.
The characters have a very real feel to them which makes their personality and humour easy to connect with.
Most of our characters are damaged in someway and trying to regain their lives and this makes them endearing to the reader. This story is fast paced and contains lots or action and adventure which will keep the reader gripped and maybe a little confused. One thing for sure once you start you won't stop until the end.

The Cool Thing: A Dark Comedy. Or Not. by Robert Rife. This is my first read by this author but it for sure won't be my last. It's a crazy read but so fun. It starts out with a crazy couple who will do anything and I mean anything for cash. When they find an abandoned UFO they begin to sell it part by part. When they get caught they realize they are in more trouble than they bargained for. There is also a crazy Dr who has a lab full of messed up specimen. Unfortunately they don't all disappear some never die! This crazy read will take you on a sci fi, alien fueled, monster bash. You will be turning pages late in the night trying to figure out what all these crazy people are doing. I've not read a book like this ever but I'm ready for the next one. Do yourself a favor and pick up this dark comedy with aliens, monsters and people that could pose as monsters!

I have never read anything like this! This story is everything you want it to be and more. Robert Rife creates a world full of monsters, aliens, love, and surprises in this delightful dark comedy where things can only get worse.
The dark and twisted humor and the weirdly fascinating story kept me turning pages! I absolutely loved it and can't wait to pick up the next book! Robert Rife uses vivid imagery and language to bring these wonderfully bizarre characters to life. His use of dialogue like Deena Lynn's bubbly “Okaydee?” or any of the dark jokes really captured me and brought some fun realism to this strange and scary tale. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be horrified and laugh out loud at the same time!

This book was AWESOME! Going back and forth between crazy, hilarious, and dark humor kept me turning the page until wee hours in the morning. I laughed out loud in several parts of this book and love the way the vivid details captured my attention. There's spooky, whacky, and sci-fi suspense with characters that had me shaking my head at times. Even though the characters are messed up themselves, I couldn't help but laugh at the misfortunes each one went through. This is unique writing that I can't wait to read more of! It reminds me of Stephen King mixed with Kurt Vonnegut and Thomas Pynchon. An amazing book and I can't wait to read more from Robert Rife!

THE COOL THING: A DARK COMEDY. OR NOT. by Robert Rife

This is the first book I've read by the author. The Cool Thing is a book that will leave you confused, but it's an interesting read. It will leave you wanting more from the author.

There were several characters in the story and I really couldn't choose one to talk about. You've got Carl; who is hoping for a break in life, Manny; who runs the shop Carl goes to all the time and he likes hiding away from his wife, and R.L.; who lives next door to a black woman who's church just inherited a haunted house and is dating a teenager. I couldn't choose a quote for any of them.

Highly recommended for Sci-fi Horror lovers.

This is definitely a different type of read than most books. At first it was a little hard to follow along on what was actually happening, and why. It was hard to "paint a picture" so to say. But after a few chapters it became easier. Each short chapter is different and insanely funny. It was very refreshing with the irony, wit, sarcasm, and dark humor that was told throughout the book. The author doesn't seem to have any compassion for his characters, which is perfectly fine because I enjoy dark humor, but do not except happily ever-afters for these characters. At first the story is pretty slow, but then it picks up tremendously. This author is very clever and has a great sense of humor!

This book was unlike anything I have ever read, by giving us a dark humor. You are pulled into the story with romance, comedy, spookiness, and plot that truly will want you to never stop reading. An odd couple find a buried UFO and decide to make a little money off the discovery. This will lead them into a spiral of l situation that will make you laugh and make you gasp.

Robert Rife, the dark humor, the character development, that whole plot of this book, grab you. Each character that you have created are unique and well narrated to us. This book truly keeps you engaged from the first page to the last! I CAN NOT wait to read more!

I really enjoyed this book more then what I thought I would. The chaos and everything that I wouldn’t think would be in a book was in this book. This had some amazing sci-fi with some comedy that really made me laugh, and have my husband give me a weird look. It hooked me from the beginning, and I just couldn’t get enough of it. the twists and turns in this really were captivating, from UFOs to Elvis monsters, and so much more it kept me wanting to turn the pages for sure. The characters and story were very enjoyable and really gave that feeling of being right there with the story. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next ones.

"The Cool Thing" by Robert Rife is a wild ride through a world where ancient technology meets dark genetic experimentation. The unpredictable twists, beginning with the mistaken identity of a seemingly ordinary artifact, lead readers into a thrilling adventure filled with humor and horror. Rife masterfully balances the absurdity of his characters' plight with the eerie atmosphere of the forsaken lab, creating an engaging narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat. With a unique blend of sci-fi and dark comedy, this novel captures the chaos of trying to escape from both terrifying mutants and the consequences of greed.

‘The Cool Thing’ is one of the most unique books I've ever read. There’s a little bit of everything in it. It's a reading smorgasbord for your mind. The characters are quirky and unique. There’s a little comedy, a little science fiction/fantasy, a little romance, and even some horror. I found myself chuckling as I read through the story. You will feel so many things as you read. The story is broken up and told in chapters. This works great because each chapter seems to be a POV for each person. An entertaining story for those that like dark comedy with a touch of everything.

A couple gets into a UFO and tries to sell the items they take from the UFO to make a quick buck. They get caught and find themselves in big trouble. How are they going to get themselves out of this predicament? A scared female and a blundering fool... so many experiments, aliens, monsters, madness and love. Is there escape from pain and possible death?

A story told from many perspectives makes this an interesting read. You'll want to keep reading as it keeps you laughing throughout. This is a book like I've never read before.

The Cool Thing: A Dark Comedy Or Not is the first book in The Cool Thing series. Let me tell you, I was intrigued by the blurb, but it does not prepare you for this book. The story is a fun, sci-fi, romance, and adventure rolled into one. The story is really creative, but what did it for me was the elements of dark comedy. The descriptions and dialogue were unexpectedly amazing. I wasn't sure where the story would take me, but I was not disappointed.
I look forward to reading the next book in this creative series and reading more from this author soon.

I enjoy books that make me question the author’s intentions. I think the extended title, “A Dark Comedy Or Not,” kind of answers this. I read this book during a time that I was going through some intense personal struggle, and it definitely helped me escape my reality. There is a diverse cast of characters in The Cool Thing. Many of them have baggage, and that helps to make them relatable and highlights the humor in the story. Mr. Rife did a fantastic job in creating this comedy that included monsters and aliens. It is a good start to the series.

The Cool Thing: A Dark Comedy. Or not. Is book one in The Cool Thing Science Fiction Series by Robert Rife. The writing style this author uses is so quirky and lovable, if you're a fan of dark humor like I am! I couldn't get enough of it, Robert has such a great way of delivering these lines that you'll be laughing and concerned for the characters all in the same sentence. This author is incredibly unique, and will absolutely have you throwing yourself into this book without hesitation! What a wonderful first experience from you Robert, I can't wait for more!

He brings so much to the table and this book had everything you could imagine included in its plot! A great read hands down!

This was definitely strange, unique and a story unlike any I have read before. The chapters are short and entertaining, making the story very fast paced. There isn't a chance to connect with the characters but doesn't take away from any of the uniqueness of this story. The Cool Thing: A Dark Comedy. Or Not, is truly that....a dark comedy...or not. You will just have to read the book yourself to form your own opinion.
