Love Contract

CAL

I walked in to a cafe and found the woman of my dreams. So I did what any man would do in my situation. I lied. I told her I was broke despite the fact I’m one of the richest men in the city. I told her I needed a place to live even though I own several apartment buildings. The good thing is she asked me to pretend to be her fiancé to gain control of the home of her dreams. The bad thing is that I’m going to have to convince her that this contract is for life.

HARLOW

My grandmother left me her condo but the board won’t allow me to keep it unless I can prove I’m married. Since the last time I dated was when dinosaurs walked the earth, I did what any normal woman would do in this situation. I put out an ad. I didn’t expect the man who showed up would be more attractive than all the men on television put together. The good thing is he’s dirt poor and is forced to sign an agreement to be my fake fiancé for a year. The bad thing is I’m falling in love with my contract man.

-This was perfect! I enjoyed this and was smiling and swooning the whole time. It’s a novella so of course it’s not fully fleshed out but it does have a decent amount of world building for a novella. You get a strong NY city vibe. And a good sense of the characters.

”Wait.” Her hand stops the doors from closing. “Why her and not me?” Cal’s face grows hard. “Because she’s Harlow, and I can’t remember your name.” He reaches forward and dislodges her hand. “Never disrespect her again, or I will ruin you, and the only elevator you will be riding is the one to debtor’s prison.

Harlow's (20) grandma left her her condo. But she needs the board's approval to keep it, and in order to have that, she needs to show stability in her life. When she asked how to prove that, one of the members said being married was enough. Hence why she posted an ad looking for a fake fiancé.

She went to their supposed meeting place and thought Cal (30) was the guy. He didn't correct her because when he saw her, insta-love happened, and before he knew it, he was formulating plans to win her over as his.

There's some pushing away from Harlow's side because she can't understand the instant connection they have, and she's afraid Cal's going to be just like all the other people in her life who will leave her eventually. But of course, he didn't waver and showed her time and time again that he was there to stay and no one could tell him otherwise.

Anyway, it was cute and sweet. It's good for passing some time since it's a novella. Love the epilogue too. 🤭

❤❤5.5 its-funny-as-hell stars!!!❤❤

I literally laughed through the whole book, it's kinda sad that it's les than 200 pages, because this would make a bestselling full-length RomCom novel. Ella is skilled in writing Heroes that are all in one types-fluffy, funny, hot, billionaire and emotional.

Harlow needs a fake fiance to inherit the apartment at 'The Grand' that her grandma left her. At only 20 years old,She is cute, funny and a bit childish. It really goes with the Heroes sexy and also childish personality. He was LITERALLY so funny. Aaaargh!! I LOVED him!!!!

Beautiful. I was thoroughly entertained and enchanted.

This is a short story filled with lovely detail. The meet cute is great. Harlow is looking for a fake relationship to salvage her chance to reside at her late grandma's fancy apartment at The Strand. Cal happens to cross her path at the right moment to fill in those serendipity shoes. Insta fairy tale. Yay!

Funny, creative and adorable. I loved Cal's aunt, she's a city queen. I loved all the detail put into Harlow's situation and Cal's life. He's utterly supportive of her and committed to their fated relationship. He never wavers. He's there for her with whatever is needed be it power, money, care, love or belief in her. On the other hand, she's in a miserable time in her life and everything is falling apart, so it is understandable that she doesn't fully believe in the sudden and intense interest from a man who has it all. That friction creates wonderful and delicious tension, which is only enhanced by the tender and humorous moments.

I loved the shenanigans at The Strand and at Harlow's workplace. Also, the heated scenes were very enjoyable :-D Great novella.

I was really bored (almost DNF’ed), this had the “guys like him aren’t interested in girls like me”, and “he can have anyone he wants”. I hate that trope (it didn’t last long given it was a novella but still).

I will say the epilogue was really cute

great story

Loved this story. Harlow thinks she’s hiring a man to be her fake fiancé but she’s really hiring a billionaire. When she sits across from him at a restaurant it’s instalove for Cal. He pretends to be the man she has contacted and the fun starts there. Fast paced steamy read, great characters and a fun read. I loved it.

It's kinda like a reverse grumpy sunshine trope. One of my favourite underrated tropes ever btw. Just a lil disappointed that we only got the sassy hero nearing the end of the book. Still, it was a pretty fun novella guys.

Short, sweet and steamy - and so fun! This was a winner for me. I love Harlow. She deserves everything and as soon as Cal meets her, he sets out to give it to her. He does anything and everything he needs to get the girl. Awesome.

Funny little thing this one.
He falls first time he sees her and agrees to be her fake fiancée so he has time to make her his real one.

Owd: one of the neighbors tries flirt but he isn’t even giving her a second on his time, and tells her to. He doesn’t find her pretty or anything, and because she’s mean to fmc he really can’t stand her. So not really owd.

They are both virgins

My reviews always contain spoilers, I write them so I can remember the story.

3.5/5 stars

Harlow has inherited her grandmother’s apartment in an exclusive building. The co-op is making it difficult for her to take ownership of the apartment. One of the stipulations is that she must be married, she hopes being engaged would suffice. So she finds a man on a dating site to pretend to be her fiancé. When she gets to the cafe, Cal sees her and is instantly in love, he sees her asking a man at another table a question then walking away and looking around until she sees him. The identifier was his blue tie and her yellow flower pin. She sits at his table and introduces herself, he introduces himself, but his name is different than what the dating site guy had said. Cal tells her he never puts any real information out onto the internet. She isn’t sure but believes him. How can a super hot guy like him lie?
The guy she was supposed to meet shows up, Cal vaguely remembers him and doesn’t like him so he feels he has saved Harlow.
Cal is a billionaire but pretends he needs her $1000 to play the part of her fiancé. He meets with her to talk to the board but the board is being difficult and deny her living in her apartment. With all the interaction he is having with some of the board members she figures out he’s super rich, not some down on his luck guy. He confesses and she doesn’t understand why he would play along with her. He tells her he always gets what he wants and he wants her.
A little drama at Harlow’s work place, her coworkers stole her presentation and when she tried to find proof of the theft her manager fires her.
Cal has never been interested in a woman before, so for him Harlow is everything and he will do anything to protect her. He finds her funny, smart, beautiful, and sweet and he shows her how much he cares for her. Their first time together is sweet and sexy, dual virgins!
Their banter is funny and entertaining to read. He takes her to meet his family, Harlow is a bit overwhelmed by everyone and then she gets a text from the mean girl in the building telling her she found out about her needing a fake fiance. She leaves the dinner and Cal finds her at home. He convinces her that she’s it for him and she relents and agrees they are meant for each other.
She confesses to the president of the co-op that she had lied about Cal being her fiancé but Cal tells the president that they are now real and everyone in the building is invited to their wedding. Harlow gets to keep the apartment.
Her and Cal go into her job to get her personal items, she gets to confront her boss and her thieving coworker, she tells them off. Cal loves seeing her so confident in herself. I love yous and an epilogue with two kids and a third on the way.
Harlow is written as a curvy girl the drawn woman on the cover is skinny. The cover should have had a curvy drawn character.

Contract Love de Ella Goode

Argumento:

Cal

DUAL VIRGINS! *booty shake happy dance!*
Safe
No cheating
No OM
Unwanted OW (This rich woman flirts with Cal, and is so rude to Harlow. He wants none of it and makes it known he hates the attention and does not like her near him. I loved that he said in his inner monologue that once he marries Harlow, he won't have to deal with other women flirting with him, he will just hide beneath his future wife's skirt! I love that so much!)
No separation
No third act break up
No gross condom use
Some pushing away from h (H was not having it, and I am glad for it. Although the first time she pushed him away, she was too harsh and he seemed so hurt and I did not like our heroine for making this sweet cinnamon roll feel that way when all he did was be so sweet to her.)
HEA

I read this the day it came out, so a few days have passed between this review and when I read the book. I did not find the comment page on goodreads, so now that I found it, I may be a little iffy on the details. I skimmed through the book to remember some details I might have forgotten. This has SPOILERS so I can remember the story in future, so here we go!
This is the story of Harlow, a woman needing to save the apartment her rich, late grandma left her in a very upscale neighborhood. The terms are for her to get a fiancé because it is in the clause her late grandma made for her to own this extravagant apartment. She searches for a man to fake marry and is looking around in a cafe where she is suppose to meet this man, but a billionaire by the name of Cal sees her and is smitten. Their eyes lock and she goes to sit with him mistakenly thinking he is the man she is supposed to meet for this arrangement. She does not know he is a billionaire and compared to him, she is far from it in terms of money. She starts to talk, and he goes with it, not wanting her to leave. He already accepts the terms, except for him, this is putting the foot in the door in order to keep this woman in his life forever, she does not know it yet, but he planned a future with her in it, and is dead set on making it happen. Yes! Right then and there! Talk about instalove which I am here for! The terms include money exchanged for him faking this engagement, and she is a little perplexed on why he is accepting these terms and the money if he is a business man, to which he responds that he needs it to keep afloat. A little little fib he needed to say in order to make sure she signs the on the dotted lines.
I love Cal! He was obsessed, he fell head over heels in love with Harlow and did not budge on his feelings for her. He just was a delight and the highlight of this story. Harlow on the other hand pushed him away a bit too much, and I did not like that. I did not care for her as much as I would have liked because there was no reason for her to push him away the way she did. She was too 'woe is me', 'you can do better', 'this relationship is fake'...it was too much pushing away. When she tried to break up with him he was so sad, but he did not listen and was determined to bulldozing his way into her life. Later in the story, she is all "woe is me, I am a loser", "you can do better than me", but he just busted through and asserted that it was not going to happen, that he is hers and she is his and to stop pushing him away. He isn't going anywhere and to get that through her head. That scene that was quite spicy and I really liked that he showed her (in a very sexy scene I might add) that he is here to stay. She does finally accept that this man is hers for life...it took her a while to get there though, but once she did, I warmed up to her.
I do feel for Harlow, but she was a bit too preoccupied with what was going on around her and it took a while to focus on the 6'4 cinnamon roll who is so in love with her it makes you grin ear to ear. She is grieving, she is trying to keep her grandma's apartment and has to deal with all the rich people having to decide whether she can or not, and she was stabbed in the back by a coworker stealing her idea. She works in marketing, and her coworker, whom she thought was a friend put her name on the presentation taking ownership of Harlows ideas, and when Harlow tried to tell her boss, her boss was dismissive and even threatened to fire her (then later did fired her). She is not rich, so she depends on this job for income, plus it does not help that she is seen as lower class in the midst of all these uppity millionaires. She is looked down upon because of it and that makes her feel bad. So there was a lot on her mind and so much life threw at her all at once BUT Cal was nothing but supportive, sweet, devoted and determined to make Harlow happy, defending her standing by her side every step of the way, so I was pretty pissed at her pushing him away so much. Poor sweet Cal was hurt, but did not budge on his feelings and was just even more determined to win her over. I just did not like that for her it was fake for a good part of the book, when for him, he openly tells her that this relationship is real. He was pretty honest and forthright throughout the book. There were parts of Harlow's interactions with Cal that was sweet so I appreciated that.
Everything turned out all right, they get their apartment, he gives the job she worked at a piece of his mind when she comes to pick up her things, making sure they will tank and go belly up, so it is a good thing she got fired so she doesn't sink with this ship. That was satisfying to 'see' the coworker and boss get their comeuppance and Harlow in the arms of her man leaving this shitty job situation with dignity.
Their happily ever after is sweet, and of course this a DV which always brings tons of joy in my heart. Every. Time. Even better, I love that we get a whole conversation between them on HER being HIS first and only. We need more of that in DV!! Heroes that are proud and preening on finding their one and only and saving themselves just for our heroine! That is by far my favorite scene in the book! Cal is definitely book boyfriend material, he is just perfect. I just wish I liked Harlow more than I did. It's ok though I warmed up to her eventually. Once the last of her walls broke down, she gave into him fully, I just wish she did that sooner in the book. Still, I enjoyed it for Cal mostly and the fact that it is a DV. Plus I always love when Ella Goode gives us DV romances. ALWAYS! I am hungry for more!!
Happy reading!

FMC: Harlow
MMC: Calix “Cal”
Tropes: fake fiance, instalove, wealth & successful hero, down on her luck heroine, he falls first, virgin hero and heroine
Spice Rating: 2
Series: No | Standalone
POV: Dual
Cliffhanger: No
NOTE: This book is not listed as being part of a series. However, if you are familiar with Ella Goode as an author, you know that some characters overlap in books as secondary characters get their own story. There are two secondary characters in particular that this book introduces that will have their own book. As indicated by the author at the end.

I always enjoy an Ella Goode story! If you’re not familiar with this author or her books, they are usually fast-paced quick reads with the insta-love vibes. In this one, Harlow needs a fake fiancé to help her out of a situation. Enter… Cal, a successful business man not looking to date or be set up. That all changes with a single glance across the room when he see’s Harlow. He knows she’s the one for him. While it does happen at times, insta-love is not always realistic. I think that’s what I love about Ella’s books. There is something swoon-worthy over a guy who falls first AND instantly knows that they are meant to be.

I wanted to really love this book but the typos scattered about made it hard. Plus, there were a few things that were unclear to me in this book and they never got sorted out by the end.

I think it started out strong and then kind of fizzled out. Maybe I'm over Valentine's Day at this point in the month but the insta-love was a bit much and it got old after a bit. The ending felt rushed and some of it read like the two characters were then pushing to prove a point to everyone else and it didn't make sense. Like, I get that she wants to keep her grandmother's condo but you're seriously telling me that after marrying Mr. CEO you will live in said condo and not his penthouse? Get real. And if no one there wants you to have it or likes you, do you really want to put up with those kinds of neighbors? I wouldn't.

I loved when Harlow said her grandmother lived in her heart and not in the condo because that is true and I think she needed to go through the grieving process of letting go but after all that, it just felt redundant that she was going to still keep and live in the condo.

I love the fake fiancé/fake husband trope but maybe not in a novella. I could see this work as a novella if they had known each other before. Like they had been friends since they were young or even just for a few years and one of them had been carrying a torch for the other. But if they were going to be strangers who met, I think the trope works better when there is time for the development of their romance to take shape. Overall I thought the idea was cute but the execution needed some work.

4.64 stars so we rounding up to a 5! like what? a five star for a 106 page novella?

I don't know what was in this book, but it was funny a fuuuuckkkkk. haha! she puts out an ad for a fake fiance and goes to a coffee shop cafe to meet him. shes told that the man shes going to meet will be wearing a blue tie and Cal is wearing a blue tie that day. I love when he looks around to see who shes meeting so he could know who he has to kill/get rid of to make her his <3

he pretends hes poor a f but hes super duper rich and she thinks hes being forced to fake marry/be engaged to her. she needs to be fake married/engaged so she can get approval from the co op board of the house that her grandmother left her.

I wish this was a little longer, but I was laughing giggling the whole time reading this book. I loved the fact that he was hiding how effing rich he was and shes dealing with mean girls at her job and at her late grandmas house.

The true hero of this book is Tristan, Cal (the H's) assistant. Everything he said made me laugh

It is a super fast read.
I loved the story. It skips all the miscommunication, and you know that time apart that the two MC have after the climax of the story? This one doesn't have it. So you have the best of the romance books you love without all the extras added to have a longer book.

I was going to give it three stars, but I really did love the characters. Their banter was so funny, also the humor between them was very.... Mmm... The were direct and also, dark? Idk, they were funny.

I understand that Cal was super pushy with her, but I understand that she needed it in order to believe he wanted her. Even more since this whole story take one weeks time. Yes friends, that fast. Did it made me a little uncomfortable? Yes. Did I love how Calix was with her? Also yes.

So that's that.

I don't think you'd regret reading this.

I’ll love her until the day I die and even beyond.

Ella Goode is one of my go to authors because of stories just like this one. I didn't want it to end. I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book even though it revolves around the h having lost her grandmother. I teared up in parts and felt anger of how the h was treated by co-workers in other parts. Nothing like bringing out a range of emotions which this author excels at. The H was just magnificent. He saw the h and nothing stood in his way of getting her. That's what I love about Ms Goods books, her H's are either long celibate or virgins, like this one which are my fav. Don't need a MW in your story to make it good. Great freaking job, can't wait for the next.

A new favorite

This delightful romance has already become a new favorite book of mine! It has everything. Cal and Harlow are both amazing separately, but together they're magic.

Harlow is a wonderful female character who has kindness, intelligence and depth. She's the perfect foil for Cal. I adored their interactions with each other and the other characters. The dialog is quick and clever. While it's a short read, the story is interesting and complete.

This is a safe read with some explicit language and content. It's funny with some quirky characters, but still has realistic emotions that gives the story an emotional pull that I found compelling. I adored this book and highly recommend it!

CALIX Line a man of substantial means, walks in to a cafe and finds the woman of his dreams, pretends to be someone he is not and sets out to enrapture the woman of his dreams.

HARLOW’s grandmother bequeathed her condo, worth two million, but without board approval she must engage in an arrangement with Cal to secure her inheritance.

Then there’s a lazy co-worker Stacy, rather than do her job, gains access to Harlow’s, logs into her computer, changes the metadata on her proposal and assumes ownership taking credit and passing it off as her work. Their supervisor Mavis instead of investigating by viewing the CCTV footage as Harlow suggested, assumes the worst and promptly fires her.

No real conflict other than the board members and Stacy.

DNF. Have never read a book like this in my life. It felt like it was moving at warp speed and I was holding on for dear life. Could not for the life of me figure out what was happening and why. I got the gist but it was so confusing so much of the time. There’s something about sabotage at her work and something to do with the board of her condo building and then his building and then his aunt was somehow important. I have no clue. Lol
I also did not feel any connection between them at all but somehow he was determined to marry her and have sex and even that almost felt clinical somehow. It was like “oh there was a barrier blah blah blah” just everything so matter of fact. A very uncomfortable read.

He falls hard, he falls fast, there's no build up, everything is a jump cut. There's no real credibility to a smart rich entrepreneur suddenly looking at this woman and thinking "Oh she's mine." The meeting came off as even more of a macguffin than I've seen in a long time, and everything after that is just them careening towards sudden deflowering and they both happen to be virgins.

Harlow has little depth, Cal has even less. It's all just an excuse to write a few pages of smut and a badly put together plot. Not sure how this author has ended up on any bestseller list if this is an example of her work.

DNF @ 35%.

unrealistic to the point of ridiculousness. there are incredibly spiteful female characters everywhere, who are all inexplicably great at sabotaging the heroine's plans.
and then the way the hero is being treated at this meeting. it's ridiculous. he's one of the richest men in the city, so he would never be treated like this, and be questioned like this.
the fact that these people are openly telling him that he's faking an engagement?? what??? in what world would that ever happen? they JUST met him, and know who he is, and they're immediately saying that his engagement is fake? it's all ridiculous.
