In this sequel to "Devil's Food", parole officers Loretta Kovacs and Frank Marvelli have been ordered to find a hit man before he kills a mob turncoat under the witness protection program. The bad guys don't count on the fact that Loretta has decided to quit coffee cold turkey.

A fun and entertaining book. Loretta Kovacs and her partner Marcello work the jumps division at a New Jersey parole office. Their latest jump is an assassin who happen to also be Marvelli's brother in law. Locals has the joys for Morvelli but she is a tough lady trying to give up coffee and Marvelli can't seem to let go of his deceased wife. Action packed and hilarious blunders made this a great book. The FBI agents were a great cast of secondary characters and the Mob was never do funny!
This was my second attempt at reading this book; the first time I couldn't get into the story because of several things going on around me. This time, I read it in one day. I'm a little torn about the characters that will continue to appear in the series; I think I'll like them as I get to know them. This one I rated 4.3 stars.
I have really enjoyed the first two books in this series so far. They have a lot of action in them. Frank Bruno also adds a little bit of humor to go along with the action. I have really enjoyed this series and can’t wait to read the next book.
I got as far as three pages in before reading a line that made me turn back. This line that made me decide I would not read this book even if it was free. It was a lone about how a character was stuck on his wife who had died three whole months before and how he should let her go and jump in bed with the female lead. The author made it plain that the man was an idiot for grieving and three months was more than enough time to get over it and hop in the sack with a fellow employee.
The author obviously has never experienced loss if it is assumed that after 3 months after his wife died, the character should just snap out of it already. This is asinine and juvenile and speaks of an author with no life experiences to draw upon.
It is unusual for me to start a series in the middle, but I really enjoyed this one. Loretta is an interesting character with some really dark experiences in her past. generally I am a fan of slightly lighter reads with more of a focus on humor, but this one kept me engaged in the story right to the end, hoping that something good was going to happen for the main characters. although there was a wide cast of characters, I found I had no trouble keeping them all straight, and I enjoyed the side characters as much as the mail ones. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys a fast-paced-chase-down-the-bad-guys-before-they-kill-the-damsel-read.
Any book with food and beverages is a gem of a book and this book was no exception to that rule. This book is Stephanie Plum meets Xfiles. The main male character is more Maulder then Ranger. The female main character is more Stephanie Plum then Scully. This book is Xfiles without the paranormal. Instead of FBI agents the characters are Parole officers. Instead of Xfiles they are the jump squad. I recommend this book. I will diffently read it again along with the rest of the series. Be warned it is addicting once I started reading I couldn't put book down.
Once again the odd team of Loretta and Marvelli are loosed on the unsuspecting criminal world to find a parole jumper. Dealing with the effects of giving up caffeine, Loretta also has to deal with Marvelli's dead wife's family. Mixed together like cream and coffee, the case brings excitement, mystery, and danger.
This is a great follow up to Devil's Food, the first in this series. Highly recommended.
I read Devil's Food and then this one. I love the series. It makes me laugh when I am reading it. The characters interact well and are developed. The story can seem a little improbably however it is a book and shouldn't they take us to places that are improbable.
First book by Anthony Bruno that I have read. Totally enjoyable. It was fun and an easy way to spend a few hours of relaxful time. Will definitely read more by this author
