Widows of West End
Book 1: One Night with the Duchess Book 2: Romancing His Convenient Viscountess
Romancing His Convenient Viscountess is everything I love about historical romance—warm, witty, emotionally satisfying, and just the right amount of spice. As the second book in Maggie Weston’s Widows of West End series, it builds beautifully on the world introduced in book one, and I was thrilled to see familiar faces return. We met Leo and Willa previously, and I was already half in love with them before this story even began.
Willa’s situation is heartbreaking yet compelling: widowed, hounded by her late husband’s debts, and pushed to the brink of ruin. Enter Leo—her childhood best friend, the man who has quietly loved her for years, and the only person she can trust. Their marriage of convenience feels like the perfect setup, but Weston turns it into something so much richer. Watching Leo finally get the chance to show Willa what real affection looks like—and watching Willa slowly believe she deserves it—was incredibly rewarding.
One of my favorite parts of the book is Willa’s rebellious streak. Whether she’s riding through Hyde Park in breeches or wearing bold red during her mourning period, she refuses to shrink herself to fit society’s expectations. Leo’s mixture of exasperation, admiration, and desire is irresistible. Their chemistry is tender, playful, and wonderfully steamy as Leo helps Willa rediscover her confidence, her joy, and the pleasures of a marriage built on genuine care.
This story hits all the right notes: - A devoted hero who has loved the heroine for years - A heroine reclaiming her life after an unhappy marriage - A marriage of convenience that blossoms into something real - Cameos and continuity from book one that make the world feel lived‑in - Emotional healing, humor, and heat in perfect balance
I absolutely adored this couple. Leo and Willa’s journey from lifelong friends to passionate partners felt natural, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying. Maggie Weston continues to shine with this series, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.
A must‑read for fans of Victorian romance, slow‑burn devotion, and heroines who refuse to be tamed.
Willa, the female MC, is supposed to be wild and scandalous, but apart from one or two brief scenes we barely see this, so every time the male MC calls her "wildling" or makes some comment about her being scandalous, I was left scratching my head and thinking, "Really?" Willa is much more nervous and subdued than I'd expected from the blurb on the back, so her character was kind of disappointing.
My main gripe with this book is that although it is a sweet love story, there's very little substance and almost no conflict. Every time I thought a larger conflict was going to be introduced, it was resolved by the end of the chapter, and often even by the next paragraph. Further, the book touches on Willa's PTSD from her first marriage, but only in a very simplistic, surface level way. I understand that Harlequins are short and often don't have the space to explore issues like this with much depth, but I've read other Harlequins that managed to do it much better than this one did.
If you like gentle, low-stakes historical romances, this one is for you. Personally, this book fell kind of flat for me, and while I remember being excited about this series, I had mostly the same reaction to this book as I did to the first one. I doubt I will be finishing out the trilogy. This author has potential, but there's not much depth to the story or the characters.
Lovely historical romance! Leo is wonderful and patient with Willa knowing her first marriage was an unhappy one. Can't wait to read more books by this talented author.
