I really enjoyed Amanda McKinney’s “Mad Women” series, so I was eager to download the latest from this author when offered an ARC. But, unfortunately, this one wasn’t quite as satisfying for me. It seems like she has really grown as an author since she originally penned this story-which seemed simplistic and sometimes predictable as compared with the others that I have read.
At 2:00 A.M., on 4 consecutive nights, Sylvia Stone receives 4 anonymous letters revealing details that only the true killer of Marjorie Stone would know. The first three contain numbers: 3:02, 3:04 and 3:11. The last contains just three words: “You are Next”.
Does this mean that Rhett Cohen, the man who was convicted of murdering her mother twenty years ago-really was innocent as he had always maintained?
And, if he is, then why does Sylvia disappear shortly after he is released from prison?
The story unfolds from multiple POV’s including those of Sylvia, Rhett and Marjorie.
“When I Disappear” is described by the Publisher as a twisty psychologist thriller perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, and I would agree! I have just PERSONALLY outgrown the very OVER THE TOP popcorn 🍿 thrillers that these authors write, but for readers who LOVE these types of stories this will score much higher!
If you are intrigued you can get a copy on January 24, 2025.
Thank You to Storm Publishing for the gifted ARC provided through NetGalley. As always these are my candid thoughts.
From the short chapters to the two amateur sleuths at the center of the action, Amanda McKinney once again managed to knock it out of the park with her soon-to-be rereleased novel, When I Disappear. Already one of my go-to authors when looking for a fast-paced plot full of ratcheting suspense, I was head over heels as the twists came barreling in from all sides. With flashbacks galore and gripping multiple POVs, my eyes never wavered from the pages until the downright shocking finale.
The characters, however, were easily the best piece of this psychological thriller. Rhett and Sylvia to be specific. Humanized and equally flawed, they brought authenticity to the plot, which helped me relate to each of them in turn. From Rhett’s swift reintroduction to society after twenty years in prison to how Sylvia suddenly found herself with a reason to put down the bottle, they quickly came alive on the page. And by putting them together in quite the unlikely duo, McKinney delivered in spades.
The only tiny fly in the ointment was the fact that I did figure out most of the twists before their perfectly timed reveals. That was, though, likely down to my insatiable appetite for all things suspense. And considering the evocative descriptions and well-developed characters, this book just couldn’t go wrong. After all, the foreboding was thick and the plot was propulsive. Together it made for one altogether addictive rollercoaster ride that I finished in just a matter of hours.
All said and done, it was clear from page one that this masterful author pulled out all the stops once again. With an adrenaline-pumping climax and several deliciously unhinged characters taking center stage, there simply wasn’t a thing not to love. So now, after closing the cover, I completely understand why my colleagues at Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse are enamored with this book. So run out and pre-order your copy today as I guarantee that you’re going to love this quick, easy read. Rating of 4.5 stars.

The anonymous letters continue, each one revealing details only the true killer would know, making Sylvia question her testimony years ago.

Thank you to Amanda McKinney, Storm Publishing, Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse, And NetGalley for my physical and digital copies. All opinions are my own.
A shocking murder that captivated the country. Now 20 years later, it’s back in the headlines! Twenty years ago Sylvia’s mother Marjorie was brutally murdered in her home. All fingers pointed to Rhett Cohen, renovating Marjorie’s kitchen at the time. He has been serving time for the murder, but always claimed to be innocent.
Right now, Sylvia has her own concerns. She’s been receiving disturbing notes on her doorstep referring to her mother’s murder. The latest of which includes threatening her life! Why now? It’s been twenty years. What a handy coincidence that Rhett was just released from prison…hmmmm.🤔
I was so anxious to jump into this latest book by one of my new favorite authors! Amanda McKinney delivers once again! A quick read with short chapters. You won’t be able to put it down! Though I had most of it figured out early, I still devoured this book in just a couple sittings. Now I’m already looking forward to her next thriller!
Thank you to Storm Publishing for providing me with this ARC. The publication date is expected to be January 24, 2025.
This book instantly grabbed my attention and kept me hooked until the end. I especially enjoyed the multiple POVs and how the timeline shifted between past and present. The only downside was I did predict the twist but to the author's defense, I read quite a lot and find only a few authors can really stump me.
If you love a classic thriller, I definitely would recommend adding this one to your TBR.
Sylvia helped put Rhett away 20 years ago for the murder of her mother. Now he’s out of the slammer and still maintains his innocence. When Sylvia starts receiving anonymous notes that only the murderer would know she’s on the hunt for answers.
Oh man, I did not care for Sylvia one bit, even after hearing her terrible backstory which is told by her mother, Marjorie, in past chapters. She’s a wack job with her obsession, and too unreliable for me.
I have to wonder what changed exactly since this was “previously published as The Stone Secret, an Independent Publisher Book Awards Gold Medal Winner - 2024. This version includes updated plot and new content.” Might I have liked that version better…perhaps, but I’ll never know.
Overall, I was not a super big fan of this one. There was nothing shocking or surprising to me. On the bright side the chapters are short and there’s a cool cave.
Narration notes: She does okay differentiating her voice sometimes, but I do think this would have benefited from having a male narrator especially since his parts are told in the 1st. This is one that I wished I had read and not listened to due to that.
Secrets, murder, and deception made for a gripping, intriguing, and shocking book! When I Disappear tells the story of Sylvia Stone who begins receiving letters twenty years after her mother Marjorie's murder. It also tells the story of Rhett Cohen, the man who spent twenty years in jail after being convicted for murdering Sylvia's mother, Marjorie. Rhett has always stated that he is innocent and never hurt anyone. If he is not the killer, then who is? When Sylvia receives the last letter informing her that she is next, Rhett is determined to unveil the real killer before he takes the blame once again.
I thought I knew where this book was going. I had my list of suspects lined up and changed my mind on whodunit throughout the book. Many may have guessed the final reveal, but it was a shocker for me. I enjoyed reading the POV's of both Sylvia and Rhett. This kept the story going at a nice pace, my interest piqued and had me turning the pages. I also enjoyed the tension, the sense of dread, the twist, the turns and the suspense that grew throughout the book.
Well written, well thought out, thrilling, shocking, and hard to put down!
Thank you to Storm Publishing and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a fast paced , page turning thriller that was a bit of fun to read l I did guess what was happening quite early on though which was a bit disappointing. Whilst I enjoyed this book, I did struggle with a bit part of the story. The main character when from one extreme to the other very quickly and it just felt off to me. It was a like a switch was flicked and she became a different person.
Despite that, the story was interesting, idea., I just feel that it could have been done better. I don’t want to give anything away about the story so it is hard to say anymore.
Thank to Storm publishing on NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Publishes on January 24th.
I received a free copy of, When I Disappear, by Amanda McKinney, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Sylvia Stones mother was murdered by Rhett Cohen, her testimony helped put him away. Sylvia has been receiving messages, saying he is innocent, and he is released from jail. Wow what a read, a chilling read.
This was a pretty average thriller and did not hold my attention like other books. if you are an avid thriller reader looking for a hard to solve mystery, this may not be the best book for you as it was a bit predictable for myself.
The synopsis for Amanda McKinney’s WHEN I DISAPPEAR was so intriguing and I’ve enjoyed reading her books in the past. Therefore, I jumped at the opportunity to read this ARC. The storyline itself offers the reader a suspenseful mystery filled with long-held secrets and danger around every corner.
The story centers around Sylvia Stone, whose mother was killed in a brutal attack 20 years ago. Rhett Cohen was found guilty of the crime, spending two decades in prison for the murder, never waving from his proclamations of innocence. Once released, he immediately reaches out to Sylvia, hoping to find the person who really killed her mother and ultimately framed him.
As I write this review, I will admit that I have mixed feelings about this novel. What I really liked: it kept me quickly turning the pages on my Kindle—short chapters and alternating POVs really helped move the story forward. I finished the book quickly, needing to know (for sure) who the culprit was (I will say that I guessed the identity of the murderer early on in the novel). And Amanda McKinney does a very good job of creating tension and suspense in her writing!
However, I found that there was not enough depth to the main characters, especially Rhett. I felt I never really got to know him as well as I should have. And some plot points didn’t work well for me—for example, Sylvia’s inner dialogue regarding Rhett and her inappropriate crush on him, even though he was convicted of her mother’s murder. And Rhett’s instantaneous forgiveness of Sylvia, the woman whose testimony sent him to prison, seemed a bit far-fetched. But that could just be me.
Overall, though, it was a quick, fun, and suspenseful read with a very intriguing twist (for those who don’t see it coming). I read it in about two sittings, so that’s a huge plus! Fans of Amanda McKinney should definitely give it a go!
A huge thanks to NetGalley, Amanda McKinney, and Storm Publishing for gifting me the ARC of WHEN I DISAPPEAR! I appreciate you trusting me with an honest review!!
When I Disappear was so propulsive, I couldn't put it down. Amanda McKinney had a knack for crafting the perfect chapter endings to keep you reading non-stop.
Rhett, convicted 20 years ago for killing a woman, has never stopped claiming his innocence. Before he is released from jail, the victim's daughter, Sylvia, gets some letters suggesting Rhett is innocent.
Upon his release, Sylvia befriends him as he tries to find out who framed him.
Rhett is an amazing character and I loved how he interacted with everyone in this story.
Amanda McKinney is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I am already planning to tackle her backlist in 2025. In the meantime let me tell you about When I Disappear, her upcoming thriller which I inhaled in 24 hour despite my recent reading slump.
I love a good thriller with claustrophobic small town vibes. Sylvia’s mother was brutally murdered 20 years ago. Now Rhett, the man who was convicted of her murder but always maintained his innocence has been released on parole. Now he’s determined to find the person who set him up. And Sylvia is set on finding the person sending her anonymous threatening letters. I’m a small town full of secrets, will this unlikely pair manage to get to the truth?
This was such an engaging page-turner. I loved multiple points of view, lots of potential villains, the way odds seem to be stacking against Rhett. And that ending was very gratifying. Amanda’s writing just hits the right spot for me, and whether I guess some of the twists, makes no difference to me needing to find out what happens next!
Keep an eye out on all the wonderful reviews for this one from my booksta @thrillerbookloversthepulse friends! A huge thank you to Storm Publishing & NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review!
When I Disappear By: Amanda McKinney Pub Date: January 24, 2025 Publisher: Storm Publishing
Twenty years ago, Sylvia Stone’s mother was killed, and Rhett Cohen was convicted of killer her. Now she opens her door to find a letter suggesting that Rhett was innocent.
When Rhett is released from prison, more letters arrive claiming Sylvia is next.
This novel took a crazy turn as Sylvia and Rhett work together to find out “who framed him” and sent him to prison. As Sylvia’s attraction to Rhett heats up, things don’t add up.
I enjoyed this one as the town’s secrets come out. Is Rhett really innocent? Is the murder closer to home?
Thank you to McKinney for the advanced gifted ARC. We at Thriller Lovers The Pulse are thrilled to read this and share our thoughts. I read her last one “ A Marriage of Lies” and enjoyed that one as well.
Another win for McKinney! I just love her writing style, it flows so smoothly and you’ll be hooked immediately!
Sylvia Stone’s mother was murdered twenty years ago, and after her alleged killer is released from prison, Sylvia receives a series of letters that are seemingly threats dropped off by an unknown person at her door in the middle of the night.
Rhett, who still proclaims his innocence, is immediately pulled back into the Stone family and trying to solve cases before it’s pinned on him yet again.
Loved this book. Multiple POV, dual timeline, journal entries. A sphinx named Shirley. Definitely check this one out, it is so bingeable you will fly right through it!
Thanks so much to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for my ARC!
A psychological thriller you won’t want to put down. Amazing work by author Amanda McKinney. I loved it and highly recommend it.
Sylvia Stone is living a lie. Her mother murdered and her killer, Rhett Cohen sent to prison 20 years ago. Now a series of letters appear on Sylvia’s doorstep with details which leads her to believe Rhett was NOT the killer. The last note says “you’re next”. The first note came before Rhett was released leaving Sylvia wondering who the “real” killer is! So many things play into the plot including adultery, a teen runaway, a police chief who does questionable things and Sylvia’s introverted recluse personality stemming from an abusive and neglected upbringing . A novel of suspense,, innuendos and shocking twists.
When you think you have it figured out , you don’t! Such a clever and twisted angle at the end, so good! Thanks to Storm publishing for this eARC @netgalley . All opinions and reviews are my own.
Thank you to Storm Publishing and Macmillan Audio for the digital and audio copies to review.
This was a quick and fun popcorn thriller that I enjoyed reading, and I am a fan of McKinney two books in. When I Disappear was fast paced but a little predictable. The audio was great, I enjoyed reading it this way and I finished this in one sitting.
As a member of Thriller Book Lovers The Pulse, I got the chance to read an advance copy of this novel.
This was a solid thriller that I read in just two sittings; the short chapters made it so easy to keep on turning page after page. I wasn’t sure where the story was going at first. There were some good red herrings and a good twist near the end.
The story was told from a few points of view and in two timeframes (via flashbacks), The main character’s first person perspective really put me right into the story. An enjoyable, quick, easy read!
Thanks to the publisher for this complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
What a wild ride! This is the first book I’ve read by Amanda McKinney, and once I got into it, I flew through it! This multi-POV, multi-timeline story takes place in a small town where secrets run deep. After the murder of her mother, Sylvia seals the fate of the accused, Rhett, and he serves his 20 year sentence. Upon release, he returns to clear his name once and for all.
This story had a lot of different paths to go done. I found the pacing a little bit off, slow and building excitement, then ended quickly and almost nonchalantly. I could see the story going in multiple different directions, but the end was clear and wrapped up nicely. Overall a good story, you just have to suspend belief for some of the more mundane tasks that are apart of life.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this ARC!
The twists and turns in this book were so good. It’s a fast paced read and I didn’t want to put it down. Rhett was in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. When he’s paroled early he wants revenge. He goes to see Sylvie, the daughter of the woman he was charged with murdering. She’s been getting letters from the person who is actually responsible for the murder. They team up to figure out who is actually responsible. The ending was great!!!
After spending 20 years in prison for a crime he may not have committed, Rhett Cohen is released, and Sylvia Stone starts receiving anonymous letters suggesting he is innocent. As Sylvia starts to question her own past testimony, she suddenly goes missing, leaving behind a chilling message indicating that she might be the next target.
I recently discovered this author, and I must say that the book and writing provided a top-notch experience. From the moment I delved into the pages, I found myself completely engrossed and struggled to set the book aside. In fact, I managed to finish the entire book in just half a day.
The storyline was cleverly crafted, keeping me guessing until the very end. The main character was instantly likable, and I couldn't help but root for her, although my perception shifted by the conclusion. I appreciated how the author skillfully revealed key details only in the final chapters, creating a sense of satisfaction and intrigue.
With multiple points of view, the book allowed for a comprehensive understanding of the timeline and events, adding depth to the story's suspense. The unexpected twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating each new development until the very last page.
In conclusion, I highly recommend diving into this book without reading a synopsis, as the intricate plot and well-developed characters make for a truly captivating read.
Thank you, Storm Publishing, for the digital ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
After 20 years, Sylvia Stone’s life unravels when anonymous letters suggest that Rhett Cohen, the man convicted of her mother’s murder, may be innocent. As the letters reveal chilling details only the real killer could know, Rhett is released from prison—and Sylvia vanishes. What follows is a twisted game of truth and deception, where nothing is as it seems.
When I Disappear was a twist-filled ride that kept me hooked from start to finish! Amanda McKinney masterfully wove a story packed with unexpected surprises, making me question my every theory. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another shocking twist would upend my suspicions, which is exactly what I love about a good thriller. The cast of suspicious characters and cleverly planted red herrings made it nearly impossible to predict the ending—though I came close, I didn’t quite crack it.
The short, fast-paced chapters turned this book into a true page-turner, one I nearly devoured in a single sitting. McKinney’s skill at crafting flawed, realistic characters added depth to the story. I admired Rhett’s resilience and how he handled life after prison, while Sylvia’s complexity kept me intrigued, even if her quick change in attitude after Rhett’s release felt a bit abrupt. Overall, this gripping psychological thriller is a must-read for anyone who loves being kept on their toes until the very last page!
Thank you to the author, Storm Publishing, and Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
When I started reading this book, I was sure it was going to be a 5 ⭐ read; however, like a couple other reviewers have said, I was waiting for the zing/twist, and it never came. I was a little disappointed with what could have been truly phenomenal. That being said, I do read A LOT of thrillers, and I do mean A. LOT. So, it may just be that I just need something very weird and too funky to throw me off the scent.
So, what I like to mention in many of my reviews, read it for yourself. If there is a lot of really promising reviews, but a couple that give it a 2 or 3 ⭐, so you ditch it? You may be missing out on something you love just because someone you don't know, doesn't.
Give it a chance. I think most people would see this as a 4-star book or higher. And the narration is great. That for me was a full star.
A big thank you to Netgalley and Dreamscape Select/Storm Publishing for the advanced audio copy of this book. All my opinions are my own.
Everything about this novel is over the top and hard to swallow, with the exception of the wonderful cat Daphne. Sylvia has a horrible relationship with her mother (and a secret dead twin), then she falls in love with her mom's murderer after 10 seconds of talking to him, and also gets kidnapped. If you are sensitive to animal violence beware as there is a (completely unnecessary) part with a dead cat in a barn too. I wanted to quit this novel, but pushed myself to finish because I was sure the ending would be a surprise and great twist, but I already figured it out and it was very disappointing.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Storm publishing for my copy of this book.
When I Disappear pulls you in from the very beginning blending mystery, romance, and suspense in a way that keeps you intrigued. Imagine your mother’s suspected killer being released after 20 years, after you’ve received a letter stating that you’re next, only to discover said suspected killer may have been innocent all along! And the unexpected twist brought it all together. If this isn’t enough to draw you in, I don’t know what is! This was a great read that I’d highly recommend to fans of psychological thrillers and romantic suspense. I’ll definitely be checking out more from this author!
Twenty years ago Marjorie Stone was murdered. Now daughter, Sylvia lives alone as a spinster, rarely leaving her home--even having her hairdresser come to her, But when twenty-eight-year old Jesse Taylor goes missing, there's suspicion the two events could be connected--especially because the convicted killer of Marjorie (Rhett) Is now being released from prison. Sylvia begins getting strange notes: some with random times on them and one chilling that simply says, "You're next!" This is one of those great, convoluted novels that has you reading at break-neck speed as there are so many suspects and even the police are flummoxed! Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
When I Disappear is an addictive, thrilling and all consuming ride. As usual Amanda style I loved and devoured it. Her writing style always captivates, hooks me and the unfolding of her plots are always masterful.
From the first page to the very last I was hooked. She grabbed me straight away and never let me go. This book is non stop action packed. There's always something happening. Her writing will pull you in right away, it's descriptive, researched and flows perfectly.
Honestly, I'd say for about half the book I had no idea where she was headed with the plot, you know what I loved that. Loved being thrown from side to side, from suspect to suspect, I had suspicions throughout the whole book, but she always made me flip sides. I did sort of have some suspicions confirmed but honestly it did not ruin it at all for me since she played with my mind so much.
The pacing was great, it was a little slower in the beginning, but once everything started unfolding it didn't let up. It was action packed, filled with twists, lies, secrets, revenge and deceit. The story never felt unrealistic or too much, there weren't unnecessary add ons. The characters were definitely all unreliable, honestly I didn't trust anyone and that's definitely what I love when I read a thriller. It was a clever psychological thriller.
Overall, this was a great thriller that I had so much fun reading. I loved the pacing, the plot, the reveal. It did leave us on an open ended ending.. I'm curious for more !
🎧 The narration by Elise Roth was good. I was a little scared as she is alone narrating 3 characters, one which is a male. She did a great job of having distinct voices for each of the women it made it easy to distinguish them. As for the man voice it was also easy to distinguish as she made her voice rougher. I thought she delivered the story very well.
✨️Thank you to @netgalley, @stormbooks_co @amandamckinneyauthor for my ARC & ALC in exchange for an honest review.
Amanda McKinney has quickly become a go to author for me, partly due to her free flowing writing style and engagingly mysterious plots. Her most recent novel, When I Disappear, was a gripping tale that blended a dark and twisted narrative.
This story was about a murder that made national news twenty years earlier. Sylvia Stone began receiving letters twenty years after her mother, Marjorie's, murder. She had spent 20 years living a lie. Rhett Cohen had spent 20 years in prison after being convicted of the murder. He claimed he was innocent. But the question was- was he or was he in the wrong place at the wrong time?
I loved how the flashbacks were interwoven with the alternating character perspectives of Sylvia Stone, Rhett Cohen, and Marjorie. I thought the alternating point of view approach enhanced the past and present day timelines and therefore added more depth and complexity. It also kept my attention and I was yearning to learn how the mystery was recounted. In addition to the multiple point of views, the story was fast paced and the dialogue was entertaining.
I equally loved the characters. Although not all of them were likable, their personalities were a perfect portrayal of the ambiguous characters that make up a captivating mystery. I most enjoyed following Sylvia and Rhett as they worked together to uncover the truth about the murder.
As much as I loved numerous elements of this story, I was slightly underwhelmed with the near ending of this dramatic mystery was the ending- it was partially predictable, but fortunately, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of this novel because the epilogue evoked a shocker culmination and made up for the predictable reveal.
All in all, Amanda McKinney delivered another fast paced mystery with complex characters and a compelling storyline. If you have read A Marriage of Lies by her, you will swallow this one up too! (Audio)
I enjoyed this one...Rhett was in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. When he’s paroled early he wants revenge. He goes to see Sylvia, the daughter of the woman he was charged with murdering.
Sylvia and Rhett start working together to find out who the killer is.... this story has a lot of twists that will keep you engaged throughout the book and make you turn pages just to see how everything will end... if you are good at guessing you will find very quickly who the real killer is. I felt bad about Rhett spending twenty years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, and losing everything even his family,.. this was a great read... loved the complexity and the flaws of the characters, the trauma that makes them relatable, the multiple POVs with flashbacks but easy to follow, well-written, the tension, and the twisty element, makes this a great read. Releases Jan 25, 2025.
A murder years ago, a man wrongfully convicted is finally out, and he wants to find who really did it, and the daughter of the murdered woman wants to help him.
This was an interesting mystery. Right from the start, I was curious to know how this all tied together. With each twist, I was pulled further into the story. When it hit a few of them, my mouth dropped open. I never saw the plot going where it did. It was a shocking conclusion and I really liked it.
There 2 POV, although they aren't consistent, and was a great way to fully reveal the twists and flush out all the suspects. I did this as an audio and I really liked the narrator.
Solid mystery, interesting plot, this one was good!
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
