When Amelia learns the dark truth behind the Vilnarian Empire’s schemes, she must decide once and for all which path to take. Will she escape to the safety and warmth of her homeland, or take the path leading her back into danger—back to the charming Emperor Kyvir.
In a world of spies, false identities, and kingdoms at war, Amelia can no longer trust anyone…not even herself.
Will Amelia succeed in toppling a corrupt empire bent on conquest, or will she lose everything that she’s ever loved?
A Traitor's Vow is the exciting sequel to The Librarian's Ruse, and the second book of the Adventures in Eldnaire series.
3.7 stars (4/10 hearts). I wasn’t at all sure whether this adventure was going after The Librarian’s Ruse. Given the cover I expected fun ambassador activities and politics. Well, the politics were there, but not as I imagined. I can’t say anything about the plot because literally anything is a spoiler, buy let’s just say it was quite unexpected and dramatic, and ends on a huge cliffhanger! I enjoyed meeting Amelia’s family, friends, and town, and there was some good character development. I was very shocked by someone’s character reveal but on the other hand discovered I’d pegged someone else’s rightly, so that was fun. Personally, I do feel like this series is more of episodes in a season than actual novels. I feel like there’s so much potential in this story to flesh it out and spread it over a full novel. However, I enjoyed the story and look forwards to book 3. Also, I found myself really liking the duke, and I hope S. returns because she is a fun character. And as an older sister, I related a lot to Amelia’s feelings of having to fix Leon’s messes for him and the mini lesson she learned spoke to me.
Content: Mild violence & bloodshed; Amelia visits a tavern and someone mistakes her as a lady of the night at first.
A Favourite Quote: “I’m aware that what my brother and I did was wrong—and I am so sorry—but I can’t change the past or undo what was done. All I can do is try to fix my mistakes.” A Favourite Humorous Quote: “I’m not the one who makes mistakes. Leon makes mistakes—a lot of mistakes. And I’m the one who fixes them. That’s how it’s always been—how I thought it always would be. But the one time I make a mistake, I single-handedly manage to bring two countries to the brink of war—”
*I was on the launch team for this book and purchased my own copy. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*
Another fun adventure in this fantasy world! The plot has thickened…and that cliffhanger!!
I loved seeing Amelia begin to mend her relationship with Duke Gladik. And, it seemed like Leon had a little character development, although he wasn’t in this story as much as the last one. I hope we’ll see more of him in the next book. Also, Sadie was a great side character addition.
Excited for the next book to come out. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long!
Thirzah did it again! Just like in her first book in this series, The Librarian’s Ruse, she has crafted a story that kept me eagerly turning the pages.
I’ve promised myself that I’m not going to go mad waiting for the conclusion in the final book of this series; but I can hardly wait for the beginning of 2025 to see how it all ties together, in the An Ambassador’s Ploy!
If you like brave heroines, cheeky older brothers, and thrilling adventures, this will be a nice addition to your library.
This series has really been keeping me locked in. Every time I think I know what is about to happen, Thirzah runs me for a loop and switches the whole thing up! Talk about plot twists? No way I have to wait for a while to see what happens with Amelia and her circle…
This series is targeted to the younger adult audience but as an adult, I am really enjoying it. It’s also not a super long read and really gets straight to the point.
If you're looking for a fast-paced, fun, intriguing story full of colorful characters, lively medieval settings, and political machinations, look no farther than A Traitor's Vow! This sequel expands on the first installment as we explore more of the world and meet new characters, with twists and surprises waiting around every corner. I am a big fan of low fantasy, and I loved getting to travel through Thirzah's world alongside her characters. As usual, her witty, snappy dialogue shines! I could not predict where this story would go, and I frequently found myself surprised. Be prepared for action, jokes, a dash of romance, and genuinely dark moments. A quick read, this book is perfect for a weekend escape or to read by the fire with your favorite cup of tea. I'm excited to see where the third and final book takes us!
I love the little prompt Good Reads gives you to leave a review. It's a simple question. What did you think? Well, maybe I need another cup of coffee, but I wanted to scream back at the question, "What did I think? I think I wish it were 2025 so I can read the next one. That's what I think!"
Thirzah continued drawing us into the heart of Amelia and the mess she's gotten herself into. The characters are compelling and surprising. I know it's a book for teens, but all ages can appreciate a good story, and this is a good story.
At one point, Amelia is told, "It takes an army to fight a war, not naive optimism." Turns out, maybe it's something altogether different.
If you haven't read book one, grab The Librarian's Ruse and then read A Traitor's Vow. But beware—it leaves you hanging (in a good way).
A Traitor’s Vow raises the stakes for protagonist Amelia in this second installment in Thirzah’s novella series. We get a broader introduction to the world, and are introduced to new, fun characters. (I hope we get to see more of Ivan the mercenary in the next book!)
The story twists and turns, and just when you think Amelia is safe, you find out she’s more tangled up in deception than ever before. And this time, her family, her life, and the stability of the realm are on the line.
The ending will leave you EAGERLY anticipating book three.
This was a fun read and while I want to shake some sense into half the cast and Hope execution befalls the other half, I am very eager to see how this trilogy is wrapped up. I am not, however, looking forward to the wait I must endure for book 3 🥲
I cannot wait for the next book. I love this and how it’s a great sequel for The librarians ruse, really well done and I will be recommending this series to my friends and family.
Brilliant sequel to The Librarian's Ruse! The same amazing character dynamics, more political maneuvering, and more cute clean romance. Perfect for young teens, but I still enjoyed it!
Another great installment of Adventures in Eldnaire!! The characters and descriptions were amazing, and the ending makes me soooo impatient for the next one!
I hate writing bad reviews. I really do, but I've put off writing this for long enough and I think its time I shared my thoughts on Thirzah's second installment in her Adventures in Eldnaire series. Because I had previously read the first book, I had high hopes. As a budding author, Thirzah's debut novel was well written, filled with plenty of action and had compelling characters. I enjoyed the first book thoroughly and looked forward to her second.
But something felt off when I picked up this book and began to read. I thought maybe it was just lack of time, so I decided to listen to it being read to me so I could do other things while I listened. But I could never make it past page 40. I thought maybe a break would do so I could come back with a fresh mind, but I could never bring myself to pick the book back up. So here are my thoughts as to why that might be, based off how much of the story I read.
The characters felt different. The choices they made felt like they had no good reasoning to back them. Our protagonist Amelia felt different from the Amelia that we saw at the end of book one. Her brother Leon (who might I add was my favorite character in book one) was fine and I still enjoyed his character!
Also the story seemed to moved a lot slower than the first book and was a bit dull. Nothing seemed to be happening and when it did it felt like it came all in a rushing wave.
Is the story bad? I can not say, I wasn’t able to finish it. But that's not to say I wouldn't recommend it. Thirzah is a talented mind with lots of potential and I believe that if non-magical fantasy is your cup of tea, by all means pick this book up and have a read.
I wish I didn't have to rate this book, but because I do, I can give it no more than two stars.
All I will say is I wish the author well on her writing endeavors and encourage her to keep trying. She definitely has a lot of potential.
An extremely well-written and fast-paced sequel to The Librarian’s Ruse. I had the privilege of being an ARC reader for the first book last year, and really enjoyed the story. Thirzah has such a lovely way of writing characters—each one is unique and has their own story to tell. It’s hard not to love them all (although, Kyvir will still always be my top favourite)! The plot was nicely paced and kept me intrigued the whole way through. I loved the interactions between Amelia and her friend, Sadie. I also thought the dialogue between the characters was very well done and realistic. The descriptions were beautifully written as well. All in all, A Traitor’s Vow is a lovely little book, and I am so glad I was given the honour of being on the launch team!
This installment brings us one step closer to the conclusion of the story, and I am looking forward to finding out what will ultimately happen! A Traitor's Vow is full of plot twists and we meet some new and interesting characters. When Leon gets hurt and he and Amelia are accused of treason, placing her entire family in peril, it falls to Amelia to find a way back to Eldnaire - and to Emperor Kyvir, who seems to have charmed Amelia - for help. But will things go according to plan and will Kyvir be willing and able to help them? Be prepared... this one ends on a cliffhanger! Can't wait for An Ambassador's Ploy!!
Great second book in this middle grade adventure/fantasy story! So many unexpected twists and turns in this one - and where it left off makes me need book three now! Thank you again to Thirzah for sending me a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review. I love how we got to learn a lot more about previously introduced characters - and the redemption arc that one of them had. Really fantastic world building and character growth in this one. If you like middle grade/YA fantasy and adventure, you'll love this series!
This series just gets better the further you go. While the first book was wonderful, A Traitor's Vow not only brought back the same lovable characters, but introduced several members of a new cast who are equally intriguing and add a whole new layer of perspective to the setting. It absolutely does its job as a sequel, and I'm excited to see how the story concludes!
