Mutant Mates #1

Mutant Mine

Rate this book
The Hades is on its way across the stars, transporting condemned men to the mining planet Chronus.

Prison ships only accept male crew — but Rory Finch isn't going to let that stop her. So she puts on a chest binder, cuts her hair, and disguises herself as a boy. All she needs to do is get through one journey, then she can collect a sweet paycheck and get the hell out of there.

Locked down in maximum security is a prisoner like no other: Roth. With his swirls of reptilian skin, freakish size, and the twisted horns that crown his head, even the worst of the worst fear him.

Guarding Roth's cell, Rory can feel his eyes on her all the time. There's no way he could know her secret... right?

He's terrifying enough when he's confined. But then the engines fail, the power cuts out, and the force-fields drop.

Now he's free. And he’s coming after her.

I went into this with zero expectations but I adored what I got! It looks like this is this author's debut book and what a bang it was! I love the world-building so far and I'm very much invested in Roth's brother's stories.

The chemistry between Rory and Roth was wafting off the pages. It was electric! I loved how protective he was of her from the beginning. I loved that he let her set the pace of everything. He was so sweet. Rory was a fighter and took some time to develop a truce with Roth.

I can't wait for future books in this series!

Definitely a new read to pick up and binge. It's fast paced and will keep you turning pages to see what's around the corner. Rory being the only female on the ship isn't such a big deal… unless you pick up on that fact that she is the ONLY female surrounded by aggressive criminals meant never to interact with the general populace again, let alone a lone woman. Things happen so fast in this story and you better believe that flight, fight, and freeze all make their appearances for our lovely main leads. Both Rory and Roth will have you holding your breathe in anticipation, shouting in disbelieve and gasping in awe! I wish I had more of the before and afters, but what I read, it was an amazing read!

Really impressed with this debut book!! The author does a great job of building a realistic not-so-distant future Earth, expanding on the trends of 2025 America - everyone has amazing technology, but that doesn't erase the social inequalities, government coverups and corruption, or the terrible realities of the prison system.

The prison ship that Rory is serving aboard is realistically cramped and dirty and austere - this version of humanity in space is more like the dingy ships in Alien than it is the carpeted hallways of Star Trek. Rory has disguised herself as a young man and taken a job as a guard for a one-way trip to humanity's forced labor world, as one of the only ways available to her to make a lot of money and leave her messed up childhood behind. Rory's backstory really struck a nerve with me -

Rory's terror and fear and uncertainty is balanced by her curiosity and bravery and compassion. And that compassion brings her to the notice of Roth, the most dangerous prisoner on the max security level. Roth is a mutant, a monster created by humanity. He's believably "other" in his reasoning and thinking, but softens as the reader and Rory get to know him.

From a tentative connection Rory and Roth are put on opposing sides when disaster hits the prison ship and all the force fields come down. Of course Rory is eventually captured, but she does a good job playing cat and mouse first. She's understandably wary of Roth at first, but without anything else to do they eventually open up to each other (mostly). It's a beautiful slow burn, with their relationship a small bubble in the larger bubble of the ship drifting in space.

The action picks up at the end of the book with the addition of the other Watergap survivors. I'm satisfied with how Rory & Roth's story ended, and very excited to read the rest in this series as soon as they come out!

This was a very good debut novel, I see a lot of potential for this author to be great. It's a little sloppy in a few places, and I question book 2 already being a prequel
- we should either lead with the escape or wait until a later book.

Overall, I did enjoy it! The world is interesting, and Rory and Roth were very likable. I intend to follow along with the rest of the series!

🛸 𝑨 𝑺𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆, 𝑺𝒆𝒙𝒚 𝑺𝒄𝒊-𝑭𝒊 𝑹𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 👽

I haven't read a sci-fi romance in a while because most are too explicit, silly, or poorly written. I was glad to find an easy-to-read book on KU with decent writing. It wasn't very original, but it had a good plot with a mix of action and romance that kept my interest. Aside from a few minor issues, I enjoyed it overall. The ending was satisfying, but I wanted more (and no I won't sign up for the epilogue).

Unfortunately, it's been over a year since this book was released, and the author promised a second one in the series (different MCs) for 2025, but there's nothing yet. That's a letdown since I would have read it.

A few medium-steam sex scenes appear in the second half—one long and several shorter. They're detailed yet not overly explicit. I mostly skimmed them, as I prefer low-steam, but spicy scene fans should enjoy them.

Dislikes: c*nt is used 3 x's, and sex is called "F'ing."

The H is a tough warrior who fights when necessary, but treats the h like a precious treasure. He calls her "little bird" and will do anything to protect and care for her. It’s sweet, sometimes a bit too much. The experienced MCs share a special bond from the start.

📕 ᗰOᖇE ᗩᗷOᑌT TᕼE ᗷOOK:

Rory Finch (23) is an orphan who pretends to be male so she can join a prison ship as a guard. She hopes for adventure and to earn enough money to go to school and become a botanist. Having lived a tough life since age 7, working as a slave for the wealthy, she's touch-starved and lonely.

Three months later, she's handing out food to prisoners when she meets Roth (32), a prisoner who looks like a large alien with horns. He has a false reputation as a terrorist involved in genetic experiments and an attack on a government office. He's been imprisoned for five years.

Roth joined the military and .

On the way to a planet for mining an element for faster-than-light travel, the ship loses power. Roth and the prisoners escape, and many crew members are killed. Roth takes control, killing a few prisoners to prove his strength. The remaining crew, including Rory's friends, are locked up for their own safety.

Roth knowing Rory is female, keeps her protected in his cabin. She's understandably scared and slow to trust him, but over a few days, she sees he's kind and wouldn’t hurt her. (I was glad they became friends, and a filthy Rory finally took a shower 🤢).

𝐀 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐬:

▪️Roth thinks the brief power loss may be part of his brothers' rescue attempt, so he keeps the ship on a loop, waiting. He doesn’t tell Rory the truth about himself, fearing they might not be rescued and wanting to protect her. Thankfully, the communication issues are resolved in a reasonable time period and cause little drama. Rory cares for Roth and, though upset about being lied to, she's willing to work things out.

▪️Some prisoners cause trouble and need to be dealt with from time to time. In one scene, two try to take Rory away to assault her. (The violence is mostly mild, not too graphic or gory.)

In the end, . HEA.

The prison star ship Hades only hires on male crew but MFC Aurora “Rory” Finch doesn’t let that stop her from disguising herself as a male and signing on.

She will be collecting a big paycheck after the prisoners have been offloaded onto the prison planet Chronus and the funds will provide her the opportunity to realize her dreams.

Of course fate has other things in mind for Rory and the Hades crew which begins and ends with one of the prisoners in maximum security, MMC Roth.

Roth is a mutant human changed through genetic modifications, and captured after an attack against the secret facility where he and his brother’s were created.

Mutant Mine is a fantastic Sci-Fi romance from an author new to me and now on my favorite author list.

When Rory is assigned to duty in the max security section and interacts with the terrifying yet beautiful Roth it leaves her wondering if he sees through her disguise, and later having steamy dreams featuring him.

There is quite a bit of mystery surrounding Roth which reaches a tipping point when during the course of the journey all power on the Hades goes off.

That’s when things get really interesting and a whole lot of secrets will get revealed.

A persistently riveting flow of good writing, world building, intrigue, action, suspense, spice, emotion, and darn good storytelling keep the pace heart- pounding good and immersive in this impactful duel point of view narrative.

I hope the author plans on making this a series with other characters, namely Roth’s “brothers” because I will definitely be reading.

Highly Recommended!

Gleeful Goblin Review: So as someone who is non-binary and prior to my top surgery had to deal with chest binding like Rory does while she is masquerading as a male prison guard I really appreciate the author highlighting the physical impact of having to bind constantly. That's just not something I see very much in sci-fi or romance and I loved seeing that here. The general trope of "girl pretending to be a boy" is one I love and I think it's done really well here. Rory is having to pretend to be male aboard a prison transport ship that only accepts male crew because it's a high paying job that is capable of taking her away from basically a dead-end future on Earth. And she's got everyone fooled aboard the ship until she's assigned to a max security set of prisoners which includes our MMC Roth who is the only one to immediately pick up on Rory being female. When the power fails and the prisoners run free the story truly takes off. The pacing is phenomenal and the storyline reminds me of Prison Break meets Aliens in terms of how Rory has to survive. But thankfully for Rory, she's got the biggest and baddest male on the block who is just a tiny bit obsessed with and drawn to her so she's not facing escaped convicts all alone. Totally a fun and fast paced romance/sci-fi adventure well worth picking up. 5/5 Stars

In order to get as far away from Earth and make enough money to set off on her own on a homestead planet, Rory has disguised herself as a man to work on the prison ship Hades. There she works with the maximum security deck, where she encounters the notorious Roth, a mutant terrorist guilty of horrific crimes. Rory can't explain her attraction to Roth, though she also finds him frightening. When the engines abruptly fail, taking out the force fields confining the prisoners, the prisoners take control of the ship, and Roth ends up taking ruthless control. Rory soon finds herself taken captive and at Roth's mercy. But Roth is more than he seems, and Rory soon finds it harder and harder to ignore her feelings.

Mutant Mine is an excellent science fiction alien romance. It features a slow burn romance between a hardworking and somewhat jaded female lead and an intimidating male lead who is layered and intelligent but struggles with his own self-image. An extremely enjoyable read.

I love this fascinating, action packed, delightful story with amazing characters. Rory is a delightful, engaging young woman, pretending to be a man on The Hades, the biggest, bleakest, god forsaken starship in the fleet. They are heading to the Prison planet Chronus with a cargo of criminals. Rory to work on the maximum security deck, one of the prisoners is Roth a human/alien mutant. Roth is protective of Rory, he knows her secret, Rory feels drawn to Roth. All power lost, prisoners freed, fighting breaks out. Rory hiding in ventilation shaft. I find Roth fascinating, big, strong, intelligent and determined to keep control of the ship and prisoners. Rory and Roth amazing together, they have a dangerous journey before then, a wonderful destiny filled with love and adventure. I greatly enjoyed this spellbinding, delicious romance 💕 among the stars. Delightful reading with thrilling happy ending 🥰 I can’t wait to read the next book

'Why is she here? I thought. What a brave, stupid little bird.
I have been painfully aware of her presence ever since. It is a new, uncomfortable feeling… It aches in my chest and needles at the edge of my consciousness, as if I have misplaced something important.'

I really enjoyed this book. Great world building and wonderful characters. I love the trope of a female disguised as a male, or a male disguised as a female (though I almost never find those *sad face*). I also liked that [disguised] Rory was a prison guard, and Roth a prisoner. The story was quite the adventure with action and suspense. Roth was definitely my favorite character. His makeup intrigued me, and I liked that he not only had power to back himself up, but intelligence and confidence.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I will definitely be reading more. 5 stars.

P.S.- I love the cover of this book! It's so beautiful! And don't forget the bonus epilogue!

Liked the storyline and the main characters. Thought has been given to who they are and what background they have. Surprising take on the alien theme.

Their coming together is sweet and it took just the right amount of time. The emotions were described in detail and it was fun reading that.

The start was a bit simple. Like reading a children book. After a while the pace picked up and it was fun to read on.

In my opinion the overall story falters a bit in the middle and then rushes to an end in the last chapters.

Promising start to a series, a 3.5 star for me.

Very enjoyable story that's about Rory who disguised herself as a man to work on an all-men's prison ship and our prisoner Roth. When the ship malfunctions which releases all the prisoners Roth takes charge and takes Rory under his protection. His plan is to take them to a remote planet hoping that his brothers will rescue him before reaching it. But can he keep Rory safe whom he knows is a female among the ship of edgy prisoners. As they get closer romantically Roth begins to wonder is Rory his fated mate. The characters are very engaging and the story with the drama, twist and turns, and action kept me entertained. I'd volunteer to read and review this copy I'd received.

Entertaining start to a series. The author has left them self room to grow in the series and the characters, which I love in a start. Good storyline and roth and Rory are good characters to start with. Roth has a beastly mein to him and Rory is soft and shy and hiding from those around her. Not being able to hide from Roth who scares her… Good start like I said. Can't wait to see where this author takes the series.

I love this book! The world building is impressive and interesting, and the characters are very real. The characters fit together very well and I like how information is learned organically and the characters learn with the reader. The side characters are also written well. The spicy scenes were done well and I was surprised and delighted by how not human Roth was ;) Overall, I really recommend this book and I am excited to read the next one in the series!

Roth and Rory. Hes on a prison ship. Shes his guard, but no one on the ship knows shes a woman. Except him. Now that the ship has lost power his cell is down and hes coming for her. He wants to protect her but she doesnt trust him. Understandable but there comes a point that you have to take a leap of faith. This is an intriguing story that has trust issues and emtiona all over the place. Entertaining and an enjoyable read.

Mutant Mine was such an adventure! The story is action-packed and very engaging. Rory and Roth start as enemies but the events in the book bring them closer. The world building is very impressive and powerful. Rory and Roth are wonderful and complex characters. In this genre, I usually read alien romance and this is the first time I read about a human mutant who goes through modifications turning him into a strong monster. This epic adventure is a great page turner and I cannot recommend it enough!

I absolutely loved the concept and the world building of this book. It was absolutely mind blowing in the way the author was able to give you all the feels from the beginning until the very end.

I love a mmc who does what he can to protect the fmc and this one was no different. While it was more of a slow burn than I was expecting, I didn't mind it at all because I was too engrossed by everything else.

It seems like this is the first book published for this author (as hard as I tried to find more by her, I just couldn't), and I will definitely be following her closely for more releases!

3.25 ⭐️ Not bad actually, the storyline was pretty interesting and I liked both main characters. At times the plot could have used a little more depth, or maybe more details about the world itself, but if you read it as a novella it’s cute and interesting. Love Roth he’s damn near perfect, and I like the deep space setting. Not overly smutty, just two real sex scenes and they weren’t that long which was nice. Overall I’d give it 3.25 ⭐️ because it was enjoyable. I probably won’t be reading the next books in the series when they release next year, but I’m happy to leave it at Roth and Rory.

I decided to give this author’s first novel a chance and agreed to read an advance copy of Mutant Mine, and I was most pleasantly surprised. I love fiction and the book exceeded my expectations. The chemistry between Rath and Rory sizzled right off the charts. I am fully on board with this author and looking forward to her next book.

Rory and Roth

The start of the story was well done and the world building good but then the tone changes. Rory starts out as kind of quirky and a bit immature but it’s okay, it works. Then she starts to make odd decisions that call attention to herself when she’s supposed to be lying low and being inconspicuous. Roth is there, and has a great physical description but outside of that he’s not very interesting. Told from dual POV the story moves slow. It was okay.

Loved it!
Hiding and decked out as a male guard, Rory never expected the inmates to overthrow the guards. She barely makes it to safety. One mistake later, she finds herself in the company of the mutant Roth. Roth has a theory on why the power went out and he's going to give it time to prove him right or wrong and in the meantime, he's going to keep the little Rory safe. Things get rather heated between the two. There is danger from the other inmates. All in all, a great read!

At first, I could only think that his heated skin would suck big time when she hits menopause. Anyway, forced proximity, there's only one bed and they're fated mates sorta. The story is nice and fast, but more on the plain side; the end is anticlimactic, and overall I expected more. It could have been better edited or reviewed. I think it's a 2.5/3 stars...? But I would read more books of this series.

Great debut. A space ship on its way to a prison planet. Slow trust building with occasional hick-ups between the lovable main characters, action, violence and secrets. And the introduction of Roth's brothers so there’s the chance of further books. Recommended
