A young girl and her father, trapped far from home. A family caught in the throes of a calamity of biblical proportions. When disaster surrounds you, the only way out is through.

Brought to you by the #1 best-selling - and most prolific - post-apocalyptic author, Mike Kraus.

An experimental fracking operation digs too deep, igniting an underground gas system that causes half of the mainland United States to erupt into a series of fiery sinkholes that consume untold millions of lives. With no way to stop the underground fires, all anyone can do is watch as more of the country collapses and even more lives are claimed...

At Prairie Winds Farm in Nebraska, the extended Carlson family works to prepare their campground and farm for the coming season, unaware of the disaster looming at their doorstep. While their farm is spared from the initial collapse, the most pressing threat is not from mother nature, but from their fellow man.

In South Carolina, David Carlson and his daughter Jody are at a survival camp, and rush to the airport when they catch wind of what's happening, only to watch it go up in flames, trapping them far from home. Forced to travel on foot, their survival skills are put to the test, but the real question is if they have the stamina to make such a long journey back across a fiery hellscape.

As the disaster spreads throughout the country, claiming countless lives, the Carlsons can only survive by doing what's required - if they have the fortitude to do so.

Ignition - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

A new series, Ashes Of The Collapse by new author pairing of Mark Hunter and Mike Kraus, opens with Ignition, a cataclysmic disaster masterpiece, in which extra deep fracking rips away lives and infrastructure on a massive scale across the USA and Canada.
The action alternates between various locations, keeping the storyline interesting by relating the wide variety of encounters and events affecting each group and focusing mainly on the separated members of the Carlson family -
Dad David Carlson and daughter Jody (ironically), at a wildlife survival training camp hundreds of miles from home; wife Harper, daughter Grace, plus grandparents Earl and Ruth, at the family farm in Nebraska.
Who makes it through the nightmare reality forced upon them, as their everyday lives are swept away?

Sure to capture your imagination as you'll relate to the characters in their fight for survival, grab a copy of Ignition today - and buckle up for a wild ride!

All it took was one spark to start a conflagration that is set to burn up the entire country. With their family divided by disaster, one part struggles to get home while the other just tries to hand on. Tragedy brings out the worst in people, but sometimes the best as well. All that is certain is tough times ahead.

This is book one of the series, so a good and proper place to start.

This is a post-apocalyptic disaster story featuring an experiment that got seriously out of control. The story is well written with a setup that could be part of tomorrow's headlines. That makes it both good as it is believable, but also bad in that it sometimes strikes a bit too close to home. Suspension of disbelief is actually pretty important at times. The characters are really well done, both the good and the bad. Our hero is really well done and quite resourceful which comes in handy as he has a lot to deal with. Overall, this was an excellent introduction to the series and I am eager to see what happens next.

Highly recommended.

This had an interesting premise and, generally, the writing and editing were both good. I did have some issues, with number 1 being the science behind this catastrophe. I could not find info on the Plutus Layer so have no idea if this is made up, but don't see a valid scientific explanation as to how so much of the US would successively collapse (to where?) from drilling too deeply into the crust. Some of the interactions are kind of sus, like a general asking the president about if he wanted a legacy of declaring martial law in the midst of this terrible catastrophe. Is this guy serious? Most of the characters are OK, though I find Earl to be just snarky, mean and ego driven. Jody is a good, high-spirited kid, but David needs to stop go with everything that she insists upon. An 11-year reacts to what is immediate and does not have the experience to consider long-term impact. Be a dad and do what is best to get you and your daughter home. I am curious as to what happens, so will likely given book 2 a shot.

I just couldn't find the science to back up the premise, not on the scale imagined. I also found the behavior of an 11 year old child, no matter how precocious, to be absurd in assuming command over a parent's experience and intellect. It became a bit ponderous to read and when there were more absurd conflicts going on than actual progress to reach a goal, no matter how far fetched, I just surrendered and quit.
I usually find Kraus to be readable and enjoyable. Hunter is new to me. At this point, I have read so many EMP tales that I am burned out, no pun intended.
I think it might be time to take a break from disaster and find something more akin to historical fiction, like a good old Elizabethan murder mystery. Enough current disasters. We already have an orange disaster squatting in the Oval. Why bother to read about one that's pure nonsense?

Another Survival Thiller

I thought when l started this book it would be a great read. What a disappointment l was in for. In painstaking detail I learned a nine year old girl collecting girl guide badges as the USA was rapidly becoming engulfed by exploding methane and two mile deep coal seams, all blazing out of control. Meanwhile our little girl tracks a pretend bear, climbs a tree and collects badges. All carefully detailed in the story and repeated for anything and everything. From cleaning out an animal’s stall to collecting eggs one at a time. Result….. yawn…skip…yawn….etc

An excellent opening to series

Ignition is one of the most engrossing books I've read recently. The plot is more than believable, the characters and dialogue are believable and the book is overall flawless. As is the norm with a new series, its going to be a very long wait for the next book, Siege!! 5/5 stars!

Brilliant read!

Mike Kraus, along with Mark Hunter, have written another winner with this first book in a new post apocalyptic series. As is to be expected with Mike, this is well written, edge of your seat fiction that pulls you in and keeps you engrossed- until unfortunately it ends. Can't wait for the next book!

Good Reading

Enjoyed the characters, not one that I didn't like. Had a hard time in the first few chapters, didn't hold my interest. But here I am getting the next book and enjoyed this one.

Lacking

No parent in their right mind would allow a child to tell them how to behave when in a dangerous situation. This book is not realistic. Not interested in reading any more of these books.

Ashes

I like apocalyptic books, with a good story and survival suggestions weaved into the story. It is a good clean read and I am anxious to read Seige which is book two of this series.
