Japanese Folktales and Legends Author: Billy Wellman
I came across this book after some research on the internet where I was looking for a book for beginners who would like to learn more about Japanese mythology.
The author described, among other things, the story of the sun god Amaterasu, in addition he devoted an entire chapter to all the rituals of the Shinto religion and the famous story of the 47 Ronin.
In 1701, Daimyo Asano Naganori was forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) after he attacked an official, Kira Yoshinaka.
A group of 47 Ronin decide to avenge the death of their former Duke...
I found it very interesting to read about the Kitsune. A kistune is a kind of shape shifting fox that has a mysterious nature.
This book can be used perfectly in schools to teach students about the history of Japan in a fun and interesting way.
I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read the other mythology books by this author.
This was a fascinating look into the folklore and mythology of the Japanese culture. I love learning about tales, myths, and lore from different countries and civilizations because it tells you so much about the people. And this guide definitely does just that. I do wish there was more informal and detail, but I can't be disappointed with what tales were provided.
This is an excellent introduction to Japanese myth and legend for anyone interested.
Whether you are a Horror genre fan and want to know more about the lore behind Japanese horror tales, you're intrigued by the Japanese and Asian people's fascination with Ghosts, or you want to learn the cultural context of the Japanese people... then this book is for you.
From the Creation story to larger-than-life legends, these are all shared with context and information on their impact on the Japanese.
Details relating to Kami (deities), Shinto shrines, torii gates, the Samurai (including the 47 Ronin), supernatural creatures, Tengu, sea/river legends, and nature's importance to Japan as a country and nation are also included.
Overall, a nice introduction that will make you want to learn more!

This was my first read on Japanese folktales and legends, and it was fun. It's a short book, and I feel like for each chapter, there's a book out there that goes into much more detail. I was hoping to see more on mythology, but the book is mainly focused on folktales.
This was an interesting read. I haven't read hardly anything at all about Japanese Folktales ad Legends.
I think the most interesting part of this book was how it was really similar and different at the same time to many of the other myths I've read. It was just different enough to keep me hooked, but the enough the same that I didn't feel like I was completely lost.
An eclectic collection from all parts of Japan and coming from animist, Shinto, Buddhist, Shogun, and later eras. It give an idea of how superstitious the Japanese are.
