Who meets their soulmate shopping for bagels in a supermarket bakery aisle?
Before I moved to the small town of Silver Hills, I would have told you no one.
But the second I meet Henley Ward, I'm swept away.
He is everything I look for in a man: tall, strong and so handsome.
Our instant attraction, spirited banter, and heated glances leave a lasting impression...
Until I see him again.
Like a raging tornado, he storms into the school ready to take on the teacher who has crushed his daughter's spirit.
The dedication this man has to his three daughters could be the sexiest thing I have ever seen.
Before we know it, we are stealing kisses in his kitchen and secretly getting together any chance we can.
I know I should stay away from Henley so I don't lose my job, and his focus is on raising the girls and being the best wide receiver in football, but our attraction is intense and the draw between us is too tempting to resist.
I can only hope our secret love will survive when our truth is revealed.
Secret Love is book two in The Single Dad Playbook series. Each book can be read as a complete standalone.

I really loved the first book in this series, and when I started this one, I was really enjoying it! He's a single dad and sees a girl at the grocery story and really likes her. Later, he finds out she's his daughter's substitute teacher, making her off limits. The pining in this book, though, didn't last too long and they got together SO fast. I would have liked to stretch out their relationship a bit more. The last half the book just had external plots, and I would have liked more focus on their romance and them trying to be together instead of getting together fairly easily. That's just my personal preference with romances, though, so I wasn't as invested in them and their book.
The last 20% was MEH, I felt it was unnecessary drama 🤷🏻♀️.
The ending wasn't enough for me I wanted to see them years later with their own kids. __________
Safety:
— Age gap (12): H (36) / h (24) — Insta lust/love! — Single dad to 3 girls (13 yo, 9 yo, 6 yo) — Not really OW: there were three women at the club who tried to flirt with the H but he ignored them and only had eyes for the h. — No OMD — Cheating (not between the MCs) : the h’s father cheated on her mother — None manwhore : he’s always been a one-woman kind of guy (it's been a long time since they've been with other people) — No 3rd act break up — HFN — Co-parenting with his ex wife (Bree)
~ His ex appears few times but she doesn't cause any drama, they divorced years ago but still in each other's lives and they are close friends for their girls. She’s in love with someone else and supports the H’s relationship with the h (I usually don't like the ex wife and I don't want to, but this one was fine)
~ The H has been clear about his feelings for his ex from the beginning
“I’m not suffering from a broken heart. Bree and I are actually good friends. There’s just no time to go out and find my soulmate while I’m at the height of my career as the wide receiver for the Colorado Mustangs and raising my three daughters.” ********** “this job has cost me.” “What do you mean?” I ask. “For one thing, Bree didn't sign up for a professional football husband. And I don't have regrets that things are the way they are now because I know it's how it's supposed to be. We're in a good place. We're friends. It's probably all we ever should have been. But when our marriage fell apart, I didn't quite see it that way.” “I’ve noticed you two seem close. I wasn't sure if you still hoped to be more or if it really is over,” I admit. He turns and looks back at me. “No. We're much better off as friends, and I’m content with that.” ********** “I paused before I answered because, when I stopped and thought about it, of course I loved Bree. But I couldn't say I ever felt all the things I should have felt for her, and I didn't even fully realize it until we were apart for a while. It was little things like the way she would snark about me working out or about my job or if I wanted to visit my family. The way she wished I could be someone I never was. It was like the moment we got married, she wanted me to be someone different. When we decided to break up, that lifted because there was no pressure for me to be that person anymore and she didn’t feel pressured to approve one way or the other. We could just be friends raising our girls together.” __________
Self note :
~ The rest of the MMCs in this series are playboys except one (Bowie).
~ About Rhodes & Elle: absolutely avoid their book! (they are friends and he has a son with another woman, he is a playboy and she had to see him with other women while she has feelings for him).

Secret Love is my first book by Willow Aster and I really enjoyed reading this story. In this book we follow Henley and Tru. Henley is a football player who got divorced a few years ago. He still has a great relationship with his ex-wife and together they raise their three daughters. And because he is busy with his career and raising his three daughters he has no time to date.
But that morning when he goes to the grocery store he meets a gorgeous woman who he instantly connects with. She keeps her distance a little bit. But I love their connection.
That gorgeous woman is Tru. She just moved into town and is getting a fresh start. She is a substitute teacher and is teaching a middle grade class.
At home Henley's oldest daughter Cassidy tells him that her teacher dislikes her and was cruel to her. When he marches into the school he sees the pretty woman and lets his venom spread. When Tru tells him she is a substitute teacher, he quickly apologizes. But Tru is having none of that. Her parents have a very dysfunctional relationship where her father mentally abuses her mother. And she doesn't need men like that in her life.
And that is what kickstarts this story. Henley is trying to win over her heart. And Tru doesn't want to get caught up in a relationship with a man that cannot control his feelings. But slowly things turn around. She sees what a great father he is. And slowly she realizes he isn't the man she thinks he is.
This book is a beautiful love story. I love how big of a presence Henley's daughters have in this book. And especially Cassidy's story tugged at my heartstrings. But I also adore his younger daughters.
I love how sweet, kind and gentle their relationship is. I adore how they aren't easily deterred and that they are loyal to one another.
I think my favorite part of this book is the character growth and arc of Tru's mother. That was such a powerful part of the book and I loved that the most of all.
But even though I really liked and enjoyed this book. It also has some slow parts in it. Halfway through the book it has a few chapters that aren't as entertaining. And the ending felt really long and drawn out as well. I wish it was tidied up a bit more so that the flow was a bit better throughout the entire book.
But all in all it was a joy to read. So I am rating this book between 3.5 and 4 out of 5 stars!
This series is leaving me with stars in my eyes. These single dads, in all their forms are so supportive, loving, and helpful to each other. I love their Dad's group and the Single Dad's Playbook is such a fun idea.
Henley is a girl dad with three young daughters he's doing his best to be there for. He co-parents well with his ex and he's willing to have tough words with a teacher who cuts down one of his kids. It just so happens that the teacher he is gruff with is the same hottie he say in the grocery store that morning and she's only the sub. So that gets him in a tight spot.
Tru has just moved to town and she's currently subbing for an English teacher that was a bit of a witch. She may have thought Henley was a snack in the grocery aisle, but she doesn't like his apparent hot and cold treatment. Plus he's her new student's dad, so it was doomed from the start.
Yet, they keep getting thrown together over and over and their chemistry is too much to ignore. And once Tru gets an up close look at Henley parenting.. she's falling so fast!
I adored Secret Love and I loved listening to the audio book which was narrated by two of my favorites: Sebastian York and Savannah Peachwood. I highly recommend you consume it this way if you can.
5 stars 3 on the spice scale
CW: neglectful and hurtful parent (not an MC)
*Thank you to Valentine PR and the author for an ALC & ARC of this title.*
This was cute and it was beautiful how much Henley did for his daughters. Henley and Tru were cute though I didn't really connect to them as a couple. RTC. The plot and my thoughts Secret love follows Henley and Tru. Henley is a single dad of three daughters who he shares with his ex-wife Bree, who he is so close with as friends. I will say it was nice for the ex to not be a horrible person for once. Meanwhile Tru is a school teacher that has just arrived in Silver falls, the small town that Henley and his daughters live in. She is actually the casual teacher of Henley's eldest daughter Cassidy before she becomes the permanent one. Henley finds out that Cassidy was made to feel like her work is not good enough by her previous teacher and he thinks that Tru was the woman who did that. Therefore he comes into the school and tells her off before Tru tells him that she is not who he thinks she is. Henley is horrified and he instantly regrets doing this. Tru obviously doesn't like the way Henley treated her and her father has been emotionally abusive to her and her mother for her entire life so she is not going to tolerate that behavior again. Henley apologizes and gives her baked goods to show how sorry she is. He eventually gets forgiven by Tru and just before all this occurs she becomes the dance teacher of two of his daughters, including Cassidy (there are so many things that bring these two main characters together which felt a bit too convenient). It is not long before they start secretly dating. There is an age gap between Henley and Tru (he's 36 and she is 24) but it is not made into a big deal, which I appreciate because a lot of age gap novels go on about the differences in their ages that get annoying to read about. However I didn't really care about Henley and Tru as a couple. They were fine as a couple but I would have liked to be more connected to them. I will be reading book 3 soon, which sounds so good and I always love a friends to lovers story.
Im in love with this series. If you're looking for sweet, romantic, low angst reads that still keep you invested in the relationship developing these are for you.
Tru and Henley meet by chance and instantly feel a connection. He's a divorced single dad and pro football player in his late thirties and she is a substitute teacher with daddy issues in her twenties just getting started in life.
When Tru starts teaching Henley's daughter and recognizes she may have a learning disability they are put into forced proximity and what started as sparks and chemistry quickly blossoms into something more, something they aren't ready to tell Henley's daughters about yet.
I love this small town romance and the close feeling of friendship between the single dad's and the love interests in their lives as well as just the people who live in the town.
This book feels cozy, romantic, and honestly like a warm hug. The kind of book you want to revisit when life gets hard and things seem really dark.
I loved the way this romance developed slowly and carefully while still giving me lots of swoony and tension filled moments.
I loved every page and can't wait for the next book in the series!
I was really excited for this series because the idea is so fun. The first book was pretty good, I just thought the disconnected feeling was due to it being a new universe and a lot of characters needing to be introduced.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. This one felt even more disjointed than the first one. Everything also just felt super dry. We were being told a lot of things and not really shown anything. I didn't feel any of the attraction between the characters.
Maybe Willow Aster's writing just isn't for me, and that's okay, because it seems like a lot of people really liked this.
ARC from valentine pr
This really wasn’t for me. Will review after it actually comes out
i have been looking forward to henleys book from the moment we met him in Mad Love and i am SO happy that his story was utter perfection, if you are looking for a low stakes, sweet, romantic and heartfelt comfy read then look no further 🥹🩵
this is my first single parent book where said single parent has more than one kid and mr. girl dad of 3 henley ward was the perfect start to hopefully more books just like his!!! can confidently confirm he will be healing inner children of so so many readers, his kindness and empathy toward how each and every one of his girls was feeling, the way he stands up for the girls whenever necessary and doing everything he possibly can to be present is SO special 🥹
i really enjoyed how well bree and henley co parented and though there were times where i kind of side eyed bree thinking she was being a bit off putting (the nicest way i can say that 😂), toward the last chunk of the book i really loved their friendship and how they do whatever is necessary to create the best lives for their children while also trying to cheer the other on in one another’s changing personal lives!!
tru, my darling love. i adored the absolute hell out of our FMC, i thought she was absolutely perfect for henley and his girls. the way she handled their growing situation with kindness and care for the way Cassidy was feeling, how even when they had the blessing of all three girls she was still mindful of not wanting to shove anything that could make the girls uncomfortable in their face. she is the most perfect person to come into all of the silver hills characters lives, the found family is just so beautiful in these books.
i will say the only thing that really made me kind of like “aw man” was the ending, while we didn’t technically have a 3rd act break up we still go through a bit of a bump (that in all honesty i did not see coming?!) i think i personally would have liked to have seen maybe a little more to the conflict and some more groveling, maybe one to two more post bump chapters of them living life as after the conflict is resolved the ending felt a bit abrupt to me.
i am very very excited to see what is next for silver hills as the snippet we got of whos to come in book 3 has me on the edge of my seat 🤭
Secret Love is Peak Single Dad Romance Trope! I absolutely adore this book series. I am a sucker for the single dad trope and this one is just fantastic. The narration is amazing. I adore the kids in this book and I also really appreciate and love the small town feel. Another winner from Willow - so good!!
As a special education teacher I had a really hard time with the inaccuracies of how things work in schools regarding testing students and providing help to students. I could not get passed this and the fact that she provided tutoring in the home - also not ethical or typically allowed. There’s also more than just meeting with parents and getting verbal permission to do testing. I know books can’t get bogged down in details but it needed more then what it had.
I’m also not a a huge fan of insta-love and the spice was just cringey / this honestly felt like fanfic.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I don’t know if it was this book or if I’m just struggling with new books that are coming out lately but I was just kind of bored the whole way through. I didn’t feel a connection to either character so that always makes it hard. Didn’t like it, also didn’t hate it but definitely not for me. Looking forward to Rhodes and Ellie’s book though.
I just adore this series. The idea of all these men rallying together to make sure they're all supported not just in football, but also as Single dads is adorably perfect! The friendship between them all is incredibly well-written! I love listening to each piece of advice they put inside the "Single Dad Playbook". It is so well thought out.
I'm so in love with Willow's writing. And I can't believe it's taken me this long to find her as an author! But I'm so glad I did! Much like Mad Love, I fell hard for Henley and Tru's characters. And their story was so sweet!!
This book was so low drama. Even the relationship between Henley and his Ex- was handled so well. They both truly put their girls first, giving them the most stress-free divided home I've ever read about. I love the idea of keeping them in one place and not changing their lives weekly. I just loved that idea! And felt like it only made him come off as an even better dad!
I also loved the beautiful relationship between Tru and Henley's three girls! The way she encouraged them and became a safe place for them was so sweetly done!
These did an amazing job! I loved this audio so much. Both of them brought this book to life as Henley and Tru. 𝑺𝒆𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒏 played the gruff single dad of 3 girls he adored! YES PLEASE!!! And 𝑺𝒂𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒂𝒉 played the adorable school teacher with the sweetest personality. 👏👏 This couldn't have been cast any better!
It’s always a pleasure to read any Willow Aster book. I love her writing and the day she always decides to tell us the story. And this book? Was not the exception.
‘Secret Love’ is the second book in ‘The Single Dad Playbook’ and follows Henley and Tru’s story.
When I tell you, I never thought I could love this book as much as I loved Mad Love, I am being nothing but honest. But, Willow did it again and delivered another book that I found myself obsessed with.
Henley was such a good male main character and his character building was mesmerizing and I loved what Willow chooses for him - and the way he reacts and deals with some sort of things. He was what everyone loves in a single-parent: the sweetest for his little girls (he is a father of 3) and completely obsessed with the new teacher in his small-town.
Tru is also one of my favorite female main characters Willow ever wrote and I loved to follow her personal story, her mother and every desire she has. She was also so fearless and I loved how she defended her dreams and the people she loves - Henley and the girls included.
I read this book in one sitting and if I am being honest, I kind of regret that because I was not ready to leave these characters behind.
‘The Single Dad Playbook’ is definitely becoming one of my favorite series and I just want to read more about them. The text messages between all of the group members are priceless and for sure one of the things I crave more to read in this series.
It’s incredible how every annotation in the Single Dad Playbook makes me both laugh out loud and make me cry fat tears at the same time.
“You guys are good for the soul" , they truly are.
Secret Love was so cute! I adored the first book in this standalone, single dad series and jumped immediately into book 2 when I got the audiobook!
Henley is a girl dad (to 3 daughters) and his life is busy with his kids and his pro football career. He first meets Tru at the grocery store and sparks fly for both immediately, but they end up doing their separate ways. He keeps running into her since she’s the new substitute teacher for one of his daughters and a dance teacher for his girls as well.
I liked how Henley has a good relationship with his ex-wife and while their marriage didn’t work, they’re good co-parents together (always refreshing to see). The ‘Single Dad Playbook’ and his single dad friends are just such a fun detail that this series is centered around! The small town life in Silver Hill was cute, all the townspeople and side characters. Tru’s father is toxic and verbally abusive, so that definitely plays into the story and makes her wary at first. We see her rescuing an adorable kitten (Earl) and helping out his daughter’s difficulty with school (dyslexia). Their relationship is kept a secret at first, she’s worried about how it’ll look since she’s his daughter’s teacher. Seeing them try and keep their distance and have text convos instead was cute!
I received an audio ALC, all thoughts in this review are my own. The audiobook is narrated by Savannah Peachwood and Sebastian York, and they just both always delivery! So excited for what’s to come in this single dad series!
Really sweet story! Great palette cleanser. Dual style audiobook with Savannah Peachwood and Sebastian York. Excellent narration.
It was a refreshing story showing a healthy dynamic between ex spouses coparenting their 3 daughters. He starts to fall for his daughter's teacher and has an age gap. Wasn't too spicy or explicit, no major drama. Highlights an aspect of depression and getting help.
Tropes: Football Romance Age Gap Secret Relationship Mental Health Rep
honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy? 🏈 a certain magic in single dad romances that never fails to capture my heart and stir something deeper. This book filled me with giddy excitement, leaving my cheeks flushed and my breath catching in soft squeals. It was a tender escape, rekindling the hopeless romantic in me.
Henley and Tru’s love story began on an ordinary day, drawn together by a mutual craving for cinnamon raisin bagels. What started as stolen glances quickly deepened into an unspoken connection, as if an invisible string bound them, pulling them toward one another in every corner of their small town.
As a single dad, Henley’s relationship with his daughters, and even his ex wife, became one of the most heartwarming aspects of this story. His respect for their emotions and his unwavering dedication to putting his daughters first spoke volumes about the depth of his character. Tru, as one of their teachers, shared that same care, always ensuring their well being because she knew how much they mattered to him. The way they gave each other space when needed and comfort when it was sought felt so tender and endearing.
If you’re looking for a sweet, quintessential small town romance filled with hot football players who happen to be single dads, start this beautiful series, you won’t want to miss it 🫶🏻
Thank you Willow and Valentine PR for this ARC, I truly enjoyed this book.
This book was so freaking cute, I loved it just as much as the first book and I cannot get enough of this group of single dads! Henley has three daughters and there was something about seeing this big, tough football player try to wrangle three girls that was beyond fun and adorable. Tru is his daughter’s teacher and despite her reservations about dating a parent of one of her students, they just can’t resist each other. I loved how they kept getting thrown together even though they tried to fight their feelings, they’re truly meant to be. I appreciated seeing healthy coparenting relationship between Henley and his ex and anytime the rest of the single dads were in a scene I was always cracking up. Book three can’t get her fast enough for me, so so cute!
• Single dad • Age gap • Football star • New in town • Swoonworthy • Smoldering chemistry • Kismet
I just loved everything about this story. From the way they met to the girls and the friendships. Tru and Henley were absolutely meant to be together, and the author made me believe it.
Henley Ward made me melt. This book and this series are making me fall harder and harder into my single dad obsession. Henley and Tru were absolutely adorable and I loved their connection from the moment they bumped into each other.

Henley is the veteran star player of the Colorado Mustangs, and single dad to three girls. He meets Tru in a grocery store and sparks fly, but everything gets complicated when they meet again and Henley goes into papa bear mode and sticks his foot in his mouth
Henley and Tru made me giggle with happiness, because they just could not hide how smitten they were with each other.
I loved the family dynamic and the dyslexia rep with Henley’s daughter, and the found family vibe with this group of single dads is immaculate. Such great friendships in this book and I loved every minute of it!
For me, what makes the single dad trope so special are those little moments between the dad and kids, but also the relationship that blossoms between the FMC and the kid(s). And Willow never misses when it comes to either of those things.
I absolutely LOVED how the girls’ relationship with Tru was developed. Tru putting the girls’ feelings before her own is exactly how it should be and was beautiful to see.
Henley is the epitome of a single dad. The little moments between him and the girls tugged at my heartstrings throughout the entire story. But he is also unapologetically so into Tru and we love to see it!!
One other thing I loved in this one was the wonderful and positive co parenting relationship rep in this one!
Can’t wait to see what’s next in the Single Dad Playbook! 😍
This was such an amazing audiobook. While I was listening, I found myself chuckling, smiling, fanning myself!
There were so many things to love about this one: 1. The one daughter allows for discussion of disabilities in schools and parent guilty for missing signs. I think it also showcased how students learn to cope to hide struggles. 2. Single dad goodness! I honestly loved this man and seeing him spend time with his girls! 3. Co-parenting representation in this book was just so positive! I loved seeing it! 4. The heroine and hero together were magic. There is instant chemistry, but they are open and honest with each other and consider the girls in their relationship. It was so healthy. 5. The stem was steaming.
This follows 24 year old Tru, new to town and about to start teaching again in Silver Hills. After an interaction with a tall handsome man in a bakery everything is looking up until I’m confronted by that same man later on because he thinks I’m the teacher who crushed his daughter. After telling him she is not who he think’s she is. Can he win over her heart?
I honestly went through the entire book thinking the FMC’s name was Drew, but finding out it’s actually Tru made me feel so silly! Other than that, I loved this book. Willow has a way of making you feel good while reading. Who wouldn’t want to read about a loving single dad with three daughters he’d do anything for? I enjoyed the challenges Tru and Henley faced together, along with their great chemistry and banter. It’s also a fantastic audiobook, so I highly recommend listening to it. I’m excited to read more of Willow’s books in the future!

After reading Mad Love, I couldn't wait for Henley's story. Henley Ward is a football player and single father to three daughters. Tru is new in town and works as a substitute teacher and dance instructor. Henley meets Tru by chance at a grocery store, and they hit it off immediately—only for him to later discover that she’s his daughter Cassidy’s teacher. Despite the age gap and Tru’s concerns about her job, their chemistry is undeniable, and they can't avoid each other. Who can resist a good-looking, down-to-earth girl dad?
I loved Henley and Tru together and enjoyed the development of their relationship. They had a solid emotional connection. Tru approached their relationship thoughtfully and always considered Henley's daughters' feelings. Henley’s relationship with his ex-wife is a co-parenting masterclass. They handled everything maturely and gave their daughters the utmost love and support. I loved the inclusion of Dyslexia representation and how Tru helped Cassidy with her reading struggles. I can't forget the friend group. I loved the found family element of this story. I couldn't get enough of the single dads and how much fun they are. I enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more of this series.
Narration: Savannah Peachwood and Sebastian York perform this audiobook using dual-style narration. They are an amazing duo and the perfect voices for Tru and Henley. Savannah and Sebastian brought the characters and the story to life. They delivered the humor, tension, and heat for this forbidden, slow-burn romance. I loved this audiobook!
Thanks to Willow Aster, Lyric Audiobooks, Must Love Audio, and Valentine PR for the eARC and ALC. Opinions expressed are my own.
This is the book that initially made me start the series. I just knew Henley was going to be a man after my own heart. He’s a great father, he’s an intentional as fuck lover, he’s not the perfect man in terms of mental health and struggles. He’s real, he’s raw and I love the fuck out of him the way Caleb does.
I fell in love with the small town more in this book. All the found family and good nurtured ribbing even the healthy co-parent relationship Henley and his ex had, all the little kiddos, true and her cat (I wish we got more of Earl and Henley’s girls or even Earl and Henley together) and the single dads playbook!! Omg!! I wish the author would actually make a scrapbook of this at the end of every book or like a little novella when the series is done bc it’s so fucking cute!! I either have tears in my ears or I’m laughing out loud when it gets a mention. It’s so unique !! I LOVE.
The chemistry between True and Henley was explosive. Their love was slow and simmering and I love how True knew how boundaries from the beginning; that girl was not afraid to shut down what she couldn’t put up with and fight for their love when she needed too and I’d admit the latter annoyed me at first bc I thought she was doing too much but when you get the full picture, it makes me want to sit up straighter on my own shit. The age gap (I appreciate the author for not making this awkward as hell) the secrecy (technique used in writing this along side the pacing) I even enjoyed the spicy scenes more than the last book (mostly because there was more substance between them. It was always more for Truth and Henley. More affection, more yearning and I just ate it up)
Foaming out the mouth for Rhodes and his girl tho and I cannot wait to start their story.
