Raymond is a lonely man, his only companions being the pigeons he keeps. He is convinced that he is meant to be alone, until the day that an exterminator shows up to take care of a rat problem his neighbor called about. It’s then that he begins to realize that his role in the world might be more important than he ever could have dreamt. This novella is 1 part funny, 1 part icky & 1 part WTF!

I laughed. I cringed. I shook my head.

Sturdevant captures the depressing realities facing so many urbanites in this magical realist metaphor for human bonding. I thought it was beautiful, and in the words of so many Chicagoans, “f***ed up.” Read it; you might feel something we weren’t ready to feel.
