Despite paying regular visits to the pet shop, Detective Leon Orcot is no closer to solving the mystery that is Count D. But his latest case could give him just the excuse he needs to investigate the shop further! While trying to uncover the truth behind the death of Evangeline Blue, a renowned singer, Leon discovers she was one of Count D's customers. Which pet did she order, and could it be the key to solving her murder?
Don't miss this all-new translation of the cult classic!
Matsuri Akino (秋乃 茉莉 Akino Matsuri), is a Japanese manga artist from Mitaka, Tokyo, now a resident of Yokohama. Her work is a mix of the fantasy, mystery, and horror genres. Her self portrait is usually a kappa, sometimes with braids or an odango hairstyle.
Such an enjoyable series. Some of the stories are morality tales reminiscent of ancient folk stories or dark fairytales, but with a horror twist and a dash of comedy. Perfect for lovers of gothic mystery.
More of the same. As with before, I find myself gravitating towards the stories where Count D and Leon play a major role. One of the reveals of the volume is that Count D has tumultuous relationship with his dad and I hope the series explores that in the future.
It's neat to go back and read this. I'd completely forgotten about the Jewish storyline, let alone the Israeli-Palestinian reference. And it was fun again to see more of D flirting, but of course with a mysterious animal, not just Leon. It sure is difficult when you're trying to train a white guy. The art is somewhat dated at this point, and if you're not into cannibalism (kind of?) or body horror, you should avoid this one, but generally it's a horror series, so.
Look forward to volume 3!

My wish for the series to lean more into the “horror” element that the title implies, but there was still plenty to enjoy.
Count D’s flamboyant personality and sexually-charged interactions with male characters are super fun to see, especially when you remember the original release date of this manga. A couple good shocks in this volume, and a tear-jerker! I’m so weak for cats.
I had nearly forgotten how powerful the "Devil" story was. One of the best chapters in the manga and one of the most devastating. Every story is significant for what it represents but Devil really stands out.
