Pet thought he'd slammed the door shut on his past, on his dreams, and on the centaur herd that raised him. Now there's another herd runaway standing on his doorstep; one who won't take no for an answer.
Rather confusing. I would have given the book another star if it weren't for a lot of guess work on my part. The plot is unusual and could have developed into a very interesting read if the author spent more time on it. I did enjoy the book :)
Pet is a centaur. He lives alone in an old slaughterhouse, is fed up with his life and fills his days with drinking and smoking. When a young centaur shows up at his doorstep, Pet wants the boy gone. But the youngster is very determined, and -slowly but surely- he finds a way into Pat's home and life.
Fall is a short story with m/m aspects. It's not your everyday m/m read and that's what I liked about it. I liked the fact that the main characters were centaurs, I liked the bits and pieces of background and I liked that the events unfolded in a realistic pace.
I agree with other reviewers that the story was difficult to follow at times. The author gives away bits of pieces of the puzzle as the story progresses and I had to go back and reread some parts in order for them to make sense the second time around. But we never get to see the full puzzle. The world stays a bit of a mystery and the ending raises more questions than it answers.
Nevertheless, this short story got me very curious about the author's other work and isn't that the whole purpose of short freebies like these? Mission accomplished on my account! A 4-.
I enjoyed this story, and I enjoyed this world, but the reason it scored so low was because so much was confusing. There is so much here that can be fleshed out into a longer piece. I was even hoping that maybe this was just an off shoot of another story without any luck. I enjoyed the crabby centaur, the young go-getter, the conflict between them and their histories. The end confused me a little, as to why everything happened, even if I have an understanding of what happened. The history of everyone is a little fuzzy as well, although I grasped the basic plot.
This is meant to be M/M romance, but very little actually feels like it. Our main centaur had a male lover (boyfriend/significant other/grooming mate?) and there is the possibility of something between him and the young colt, but it's all kind of vague. This needed to be longer to explore the complex systems that were created.
Amusing tale of centaurs with a big dollop of angst. Who can resist a centaur trying to drown his troubles with whisky and beer with a matching nicotine habit? Pet does not come across as the noble, wise advisor with hooves and tail. Pet is rude, obnoxious, cantankerous and hurting. Matthias has plans to change that. Enjoyable read even when you want to knock some sense into either of them.
The incessant cursing bothered me a little, even though it fitted the character of Pet. It just seemed a little too much. It also felt like a part of a bigger story, but I liked how the author just assumed the reader knew what was going on without explaining away, and still not losing me as a reader and getting me all confused.
Maybe more like 2.5 stars. There were a lot of places in the story where I was only guessing at what was happening. There were no complete explanations for the conflict or for what was supposed to be the resolution at the end.
With the popularity of vampires and werewolves lately it's nice to see something different. The beginning was a little hard to comprehend, and I still don't know if this is meant to be on earth somewhere, but it's not bad.
