Jenna Reed is a disgraced FBI criminal profiler who is still haunted by the past. No longer working with the FBI, Jenna instead works as a psychic medium. When she meets a client who is adamant that the accidental death of a famous musician was murder, Jenna sees this as the ultimate challenge for redemption.
The plot is where this book shines. The concept of a profiler turned medium is such a unique concept, and the mystery surrounding the death of Paul Morris is really interesting. The mastermind responsible remains a mystery right to the end which kept a level of suspense. The author does an excellent job of mixing plot progression with glimpses into Jenna's fragile state of mind.
My biggest issue is that Jenna is so unlikable. This made it difficult for me to stay engaged because I wasn't captivated by her and she didn't inspire me to be empathetic. With a heavy character driven novel like this, so much focus was naturally on Jenna and she, in my opinion, is the worst part of this whole story. Her relationships with people are so hostile and awkward.. and they feel very artificial. I love that she's strong and fierce, but it also becomes highly irritating when she pushes back at every single opportunity. There were so few moments where we saw her soften that I as a reader felt like she was trying to push me away too. She doesn't have as much character development as I'd hoped either. She frustrated me so often.
This is a well-written book overall, even if I didn't like the main character. I can recognize the talent that Margo Ervand has for writing complex and multi layered characters. The plot was still excellent. If you enjoy novels with a strong female protagonist, a complex murder mystery, and very detailed and rich character development, I would 100% recommend giving this book a try.
Thank you to the author for providing me a copy of this for review.
This is a well written book with strong characters and an interesting storyline. The author does a great job building the story and paints her scenes perfectly. She brings intrigue and mystery and moves the story fluidly, keeping me glued to the pages reading.

This book has a lot of potential. I felt that some parts of the book were rushed to try to get them in before the book ended. I liked the characters, but at times I found it hard to keep track of so many. I'll still give the second book a go, though, to see how it pans out in comparison. I believe this is the debut novel, so a good first attempt.
This book was amazing. I couldn’t put it down and read it In 3 days. I felt like I knew every character intimately. Every morsel of food described was delicious. I really hope there is a sequel, it is there for the making. So many unanswered questions.
A fascinating dive into the human pysche both from the point of view as the profiler and victim.
Jen, despite her past experiences, is a strong but damaged woman. Due to the destruction of her standing as a profiler she works as a medium, where her ability to read people stands her in good stead.
The strange case of a famous, talented pianist being killed by his dog is brought to her attention by a troubled young woman. This throws her back into the murky world of unseen criminals, violence and danger.
A thoroughly absorbing, fascinating story with depth, grit, plot twists and plenty of real characters. A standalone story with an overarching plot leading into the next book. Absolutely can't wait.

A very interesting concept of a FBI profiler turned medium, but lack luster in the delivery. Part of the problem for me was Jenna's character. I just struggled to find anything to like or care about her. I understand she went through a trauma 5 years previously, but she just didn't relate or work well with others. It was tough to feel sorry for a character that appeared so cold and self-involved. The mystery on the death of Paul also left a lot to be desired. It just didn't intrigue me enough to care about what really happened to cause his dog to attack him. His whole family was full of unlikable characters too. Not a bad read, but not one that kept me on the edge of my seat.
I received an ARC from Booksprout and this is my honest review.
Book 1 of Jenna Reed Mystery series is off to a great start. Jenna was a renowned FBI profiler but now works as a psychic. This is a well written and fast paced murder mystery. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Will Jenna find Paul's true killer? I will definitely be reading book two when it comes out.
This is my first book by Margo Ervand, and it won’t be my last. In this novel, Jenna, a former renowned FBI profiler who now works as a psychic, is contacted by Claire Watson for help after the murder of her love, Paul Morris. The story is well-planned, with carefully placed clues and excellent foreshadowing. I can’t wait to read the second book in this series. Five stars!
